Introduction to the Sovereign chair
What is the Sovereign?
This elegant chair provides a versatile solution for people requiring extra postural support when
sitting.
It is ideal for use by ambulant and semi-ambulant individuals, especially those able to push up
from their sitting position. Providing comfort and support with ease of mobility, the Sovereign
benefits users and carers alike.
The Sovereign has been designed to provide a tailorable seating solution for individual users
offering excellent postural support with a choice of interchangeable back cushions and seat
modules.
Introduction to the Sovereign
chair
Why is there a need for this type of
chair?
The ability of a seated person to function
efficiently and perform activities depends on
their ability to adopt the appropriate
posture. All activity is posture dependent. If
a person cannot move or has problems
adjusting their posture, it may be necessary
to use seating to try to provide externally
what is limited internally.
Tailoring the Sovereign for each individual
is made possible with a range of
interchangeable back cushions and seat
modules and adapting the seat length will
provide a unique, bespoke chair.
Who should consider using the
Sovereign?
Designed for those seated for long periods;
semi-ambulant users who require excellent
postural support. The Sovereign can be
used in a variety of different environments
including nursing homes, domestic
environments and hospices for those with
moderate to severe seating difficulties.

212709 or +44 (0) 1440 705352, they will
be delighted to help you.
Guidelines for Best Practice
To ensure good practice when considering
purchasing a Sovereign chair and effective
use post purchase we advise that the
following guidelines are considered:
1. Seek advice and input from a qualified
therapist/professional and/or Kirton
representative/distributor at the initial
prescription of the chair.
2. If unsure when ordering the chair and
any accessories contact either the
therapist involved or your Kirton
representative or distributor or our
Customer Services Team on
Freephone 0800 212709 or
+44 (0) 1440 705352 to discuss
further.
3.
It is recommended that following
receipt of the chair all staff m
embers
that will be supervising the user(s)
should be trained in adjusting the chair
to ensure it is adjusted safely and
correct positioning is maintained for
the benefit of the user. This is of
particular importance where the chair
is to be used by severa
l different
users.
4.
Users of the Sovereign should be
supervised and checked regularly to
ensure their most appropriate
position
is maintained in the chair.

The User Instructions
The purpose of the following user
instructions is to provide a guide on how to
utilise, adjust and maintain the Sovereign
chair.
These instructions should be read by all
those involved with the supervision of the
user and/or the care of the chair before use.
Please retain these instructions with the
Care and Maintenance card enclosed for
future reference.
Using the Sovereign Chair
The Sovereign chairs are manufactured to
a standard pattern with or without
accessories.
Ideally all options and accessories should
be ordered at the time of manufacture, this
is essential if D-Rings for lap-belts and
pelvic positioners are needed as well as
laminated trays with velcro as these cannot
be added post purchase.
The user should always sit down gently
into the chair. The arms are strong enough
to push on to raise to st
anding but the arms
should not be sat on.
Wheels
The Sovereign is fitted with 75mm wheels
that are braked at the rear of the chair.
•
To apply the brakes, press down on
the front edge of the ridged area on
each wheel. The brakes should be
applied during all transfer operations
and when the chair is stationary.
•
To unlock the brakes, push down the
top edge of the ridged area on each
wheel until it is level with the rest of
the wheel.
•
Always check the wheels are not
locked before moving the chair.

Optional Accessories
Sliding Footrest
The sliding footrest (on chairs fitted with
castors) is designed to support the user’s
feet when moving the occupied chair. It is
also useful for users where the seat height
may be too high.
•
To use, pull the footrest forward fully.
To retract:
•
Push the footrest back fully, before
transferring to or from the chair.
Do not stand or place undue weight on
the footrest.
Tray
A large laminated tr
ay, ideal for various
activities, sits across the arms and is held
securely in place by velcro, fitted to the
arms of the chair.
•
To attach the tray, position it with
sufficient space between it and the
user, ensuring movement is not
restricted.
•
When the desired, comfortable
position is achieved, attach the tray to
the velcro.
Lap-Belt
The Lap-Belt helps to position the user in
the back of the chair. It is essential that the
fixings for the Lap-Belt be fitted at time of
manufacture as these cannot be added
post purchase.
NOTE: Please refer to Lap-Belt User
Instructions enclosed for further
information.

post purchase of the chair contact
our Customer Services Team on
Freephone 0800 212709 or from outside

further. Alternatively, if you purchased your
chair from a Kirton distributor in the first
instance please contact your point of
reference there.

Potential Risks, Cautions &
Warnings
•
The user is at risk if the Sovereign is not
properly specified and adjusted to their
particular requirements.
•
Do not stand on the sliding footrest (if
applicable) as this may cause the chair to
become unstable and tip forwards.
•
Always retract the sliding footrest (if
applicable) before
allowing the user to stand
up from the chair.
•
Do not try moving the chair without first
ensuring that all wheels are unlocked.
•
This chair should be moved unoccupied
over any significant distance. For a small
movement, if occupied ensure the sliding
footrest is in place.
•
Do not sit on the arms of the chair as this
may exert undue pressure on the structure
of the chair over time and cause damage to
the covering. It may also make the stability
of the chair unsafe.
•
If a legrest has been accessorised with the
chair, do not allow it to be used as a seat.
•
Users should be regularly checked and
supervised when in the chair to mitigate the
user moving or sliding into an inappropriate
position.
•
If using a lap-belt or pelvic positioner
ensure the user is regularly supervised to
avoid moving into an inappropriate position.
•
Care should be taken not to over tighten the
lap-belt or pelvic positioner in order to
reduce harm to the user.
