1.1. Using the Operating Instructions
T e Operating Instructions are an integral part of t e rotary evapo-
rator.
Carefully read t e Operating Instructions before bringing t e
rotary evaporator into operation.
Keep t e Operating Instructions readily accessible at all times.
Pass on t e Operating Instructions to t e next owner.
Rotary evaporators produced for specific customers (model desig-
nations prefixed wit "PJ" or "PM") may ex ibit differences from t e
Operating Instructions.
W enever using custom rotary evaporators, also observe t e
agreed specifications.

2. Use
2.1. Intended use
T e RC 900 rotary evaporator is designed for use in c emical,
p armaceutical, and biological laboratories. It is intended exclu-
sively for use in separation of solvents (distillation, drying, recov-
ery, extraction, etc.).
Make sure t at t e installation location is dry and t e rotary evapo-
rator is protected against water in t e form of rain, spray, splas es
and drips.
T e rotary evaporator may be used exclusively in indoor areas.
T e rotary evaporator may be used only underneat a fume ood
or properly installed protective cover (accessory).
Owner's responsi ility
Install and operate t e rotary evaporator only under t e operating
parameters and conditions described in C apter 4, Tec nical data.
Protect t e rotary evaporator from moisture.
Ensure t at no azardous materials can enter t e surrounding
environment (including eating and cooling media), even in t e
event of glass breakage, leaks, or loss of cooling.
Ensure t at no azardous materials/reactions can be produced
t roug contact of processed solutions and solvents wit t e
eating and cooling media or t e ambient air. It may be necessary
to operate t e unit only under a suitable fume ood.
W enever t e rotary evaporator is operated outside of a suitable
fume ood (after eliminating t ese sources of danger), t e protec-
tive cover must be used (refer to C apter 11, Spare parts and
accessories, pg. 53).
Before using a substance, investigate its compatibility wit t e
materials used in t e seals and tubing.
Before using a substance, investigate w et er it can be evapo-
rated wit out danger.
Make sure t e tubes for gas and cooling medium are correctly
assigned on t e c illed condenser.
Adequately cool t e c illed condenser at all times.
Laboratory equipment and supplemental components attac ed to
t e rotary evaporator must meet t e specifications provided in
C apter 4.
KNF recommends collection and evaporation flasks from Duran.

2.2. Improper use
T e rotary evaporator may not be used in potentially explosive
atmosp eres.
T e rotary evaporator may not be used in a corrosive environment.
T e eating bat of t e rotary evaporator may not be used to warm
food. It serves exclusively to add eat to t e evaporation flask.
Never apply positive pressure to t e rotary evaporator's vacuum
connection.
T e lifting drive may not be blocked or subjected to loads.

3. Safety
T e rotary evaporator is constructed according to generally recog-
nised rules of tec nology and in accordance wit pertinent occupa-
tional safety and accident prevention regulations. Nevert eless,
potential dangers during use can result in injuries to t e user or
ot ers, or in damage to t e rotary evaporator or ot er property.
Use t e rotary evaporator only in a tec nically flawless condition, in
accordance wit its intended use, wit awareness of safety and
potential azards, and in observance of t e Operating Instructions.
Ensure t at only trained and instructed personnel or specially
trained laboratory personnel work on t e rotary evaporator. T is
applies also to assembly, connection and servicing work.
Make sure t at t e personnel as read and understood t e Operat-
ing Instructions, and in particular t e "Safety" c apter.
Ensure ad erence to all pertinent accident prevention and safety
regulations w en working on and operating t e rotary evaporator.
T e protective clot ing required for safety in t e laboratory must be
worn, i.e. protective glasses, gloves, etc.
Ensure t at personnel c eck before eac use of t e rotary evapo-
rator t at t ey ave t e and terminal associated wit t e rotary
evaporator. T e rotary evaporator is equipped wit a paging func-
tion for t is purpose (see Paging , page 40).
Safety regulations for andling initial substances and t ose t at are
produced in t e process must be observed. T is applies equally to
t e eating and cooling media.
Be aware t at t e rotary evaporator is not designed to be explo-
sion-proof.
Ensure t at t e distillation residue is not explosive.
Make sure t at t e temperature of t e medium is always sufficient-
ly below its ignition temperature in order to avoid ignition or explo-
sion. T is also applies to unusual operating situations.
Consider any external sources of energy, suc as sources of
radiation, t at could additionally eat t e medium.
In case of doubt, consult KNF customer service.
Proper andling of t e initial and resulting substances / eating
and cooling media must be ensured.
Manufacturer regulations must be observed w en disposing of t e
eating and cooling media. Be aware t at t e eating and cooling
media may become contaminated.

W en ventilating t e rotary evaporator wit air or inert gas, be sure
to prevent formation of reactive or explosive media. T e maximum
permissible operating pressure of t e c illed condenser is 0.1 bar
rel.
Ensure t at t e evaporation flask rotates t roug out t e entire
eating p ase (even during submersion/lifting) in order to avoid
eating only one side of t e evaporation flask or experiencing a
vaporisation delay.
Ensure t at t e evaporation flask is immersed or lifted only at a low
speed. Increase speed only to t e extent t at no eating medium is
ejected from t e eating bat .
All replacement parts s ould be properly stored and disposed of in
accordance wit t e applicable environmental protection regula-
tions. Ensure ad erence to t e pertinent national and international
regulations. T is especially applies to parts contaminated wit toxic
substances.
T e rotary evaporator complies wit t e safety stipulations of
Directive 2004/108/EC for electromagnetic compatibility, Directive
2006/42/EC for mac ines, Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS2) and
Directive 1999/5/EC (R&TTE). T e following armonised standards

Several rotary evaporators can be operated simultaneously
using t e associated and terminals wit in t e range of t e
wireless connection.
T e wireless connection between t e and terminal and t e
rotary evaporator is robustly compatible wit mobile telep ones

T e RC 900 rotary evaporator is designed for distillation and
evaporation of solvents. T e rotary evaporator is operated via t e
and terminal (Fig. 1/2, page 12).
T e solvent t at s all be evaporated is located in t e evaporation
flask (13). T e solvent is made to evaporate t roug t e proper
combination of temperature and vacuum. T e evaporation flask is
immersed into t e eating bat (15), in w ic a eating liquid is
located, typically water or a suitable oil. T e drive (9), continually
rotates t e evaporation flask inside t e eating bat . Once t e
solvent begins to evaporate, it rises t roug t e vapor tube and
into t e c illed condenser (7), w ic is continually cooled wit
cooling water or anot er cooling medium. Here t e vapor is cooled
to t e point w ere it condenses and collects (again in liquid form)
in t e collection flask (3).
T e c illed condenser and collection flask ave a transparent
coating t at protects t em against implosion.
A protective cover (accessory) is placed onto t e eating bat to
protect t e evaporation flask from implosion and to protect against
sprays.
5.2. Rotary evaporator functions
Evaporation flask
T e evaporation flask's angle of inclination is adjusted via
t e rotary knobs (Fig. 1/12+20). Toget er wit t e ability to
move t e evaporation flask up and down and to displace
t e eating bat , t e rotary evaporator may be adapted to
various s apes and sizes of evaporation flasks.
T e drive (9) brings t e evaporation flask into rotation,
t ereby ac ieving a ig rate of evaporation:
- A more omogeneous distribution of temperature is
ac ieved bot in t e eating bat and in t e evaporation
flask (optimisation of temperature control and eat trans-
fer).
- T e moistened surface inside t e evaporation flask is en-
larged (increases eat transfer and t e boiling surface).
- Formation of a concentration gradient in t e solvent is
avoided.
Additional advantages of rotation include:
- T e danger of evaporation delay is reduced
- No localized over eating, no crust formation
T e and terminal (2) is used to switc t e rotation of t e
evaporation flask on or off and to select t e desired speed (see
C apter 8, Operating the rotary evaporator).
In addition, t e direction of rotation may be c anged at regular
intervals. T e interval at w ic t e direction of rotation c anges
is also adjusted using t e and terminal (see C apter 8, Oper-

ating the rotary evaporator). Regularly c anging t e direction
of rotation prevents deposition of salt in t e evaporation flask.
In t e event of a power failure t e evaporation flask is automat-
ically lifted from t e eating bat .
Heating ath
T e rotary evaporator's eating bat (15) can be broug t
to and eld at a temperature according to t e requirements
of t e application in order to ac ieve optimal distillation.
T e eating bat may be pulled out on guide rails in order
to permit t e use of t e widest range of evaporation flask
sizes (see section Evaporation flasks).
T e specially s aped pouring lip makes it easier to empty
t e eating bat .

Function
T e and terminal is used to set t e process parameters used by
t e RC 900 rotary evaporator.
Settings are adjusted on t e and terminal's touc screen (Fig. 2/2)
or wit t e rotary knob (5).
T e wireless and terminal may be removed from its mount on t e
rotary evaporator (observe transportation safeguard Fig. 1/4, page
12) in order to control t e rotary evaporator remotely. T is makes it

convenient to control t e evaporator w ile it is located under a
closed fume ood.
W enever t e and terminal is located in t e mount w ile t e
rotary evaporator is turned on, t e batteries in t e and terminal
will c arge automatically. T e batteries will c arge even if t e and
terminal is switc ed off. Alternatively, t e batteries can be c arged
t roug t e and terminal's included power supply (see mains
socket (4) on t e and terminal).
T e power supply also makes it possible to supply t e and termi-
nal wit electrical power directly from a mains.
A single tone on t e and terminal will indicate w en t e batteries
are nearly ex austed.

6. Installation and connection
Connect t e rotary evaporator only under t e operating pa-
rameters and conditions described in C apter 4. Tec nical da-
ta (page 9).
Observe all notices related to t e device's intended use and
safety procedures (see C apter 2 and 3, page 5ff).
WARNING
Damage to t e rotary evaporator may result in
personal injury caused by poisoning or explosion.
Hazardous gases and vapors may be produced
during distillation.
Air drawn out of t e rotary evaporator must be
safely diverted.
6.1. Installation
T e rotary evaporator may be carried only by t e components
labeled in Fig. 3. Carrying t e rotary evaporator by any spot ot er
t an t e indicated spots may result in damage to t e unit.

Before installation, allow t e rotary evaporator to come to
ambient temperature at t e installation location.
Make sure t at t e installation location is dry and t e rotary
evaporator is protected against water in t e form of rain, spray,
splas es and drips.

C oose a safe location (flat, stable surface) for t e rotary
evaporator.
Protect t e rotary evaporator from dust.
Protect t e rotary evaporator from vibration and impact.
Attac to t e rotary evaporator only t ose components t at are
designed for t e rotary evaporator's pneumatic data and/or
coolant-supply parameters (see C apter 4, page 9).
T e rotary evaporator's and terminal is secured at t e factory in
order to prevent damage during transportation. T e transportation
safeguard must be disengaged before t e and terminal can be
removed. To do t is, rotate t e knurled knob (Fig. 1/4, page 12) out
until t e and terminal can be removed.
T e transportation safeguard can be screwed back in before
transporting t e rotary evaporator in t e future.
Place t e included eating bat (Fig. 1/15, page 12) onto t e base
connector.
Once in place, t e eating bat can be s ifted along t e axis of
rotation (see C apter 4 Technical data for maximum pull-out
lengt ).
W en installing glass parts, observe an adequate amount of
space above t e rotary evaporator because t e glass structure
may exceed t e dimensions of t e rotary evaporator itself.

T e c illed condenser (Fig. 1/7, page 12) is delivered uninstalled.
Install as follows:
1. Loosen tension nut (10) for c illed condenser until t e c illed
condenser can be inserted.
2. Insert c illed condenser (7).
3. Retig ten tension nut (10) for c illed condenser.
To finis tig tening t e tension nut, grasp t e c illed conden-
ser wit your ot er and and use it as a lever (see Fig. 4).

T e oses and connections are color-coded to simplify as-
signment (see Legend in Fig. 5).
Connect t e vacuum lines only to t e left side of t e tower (see
Fig. 5). T e internal connection ere as elevated c emical
resistance (see C apter 4, Technical data).

T e c illed condenser is now fastened to t e rotary evaporator.
In order to ensure a proper seal, retig ten t e tension nut once
more w ile under vacuum.
Requirements:
Loosen tubing
Remove collection flask (see below)
1. Loosen tension nut (8) until t e c illed condenser may be
pulled out.
W en loosening t e tension nut, grasp t e c illed condenser
wit your ot er and and
use it as a lever (refer to Fig. 4).
2. Remove c illed condenser (7).
Install t e separately included collection flask (Fig. 1/3, page 12)
using t e included flask clip (Fig. 1/5, page 12).

Rotary evaporator must be ventilated

removing t e flasks, residual solvent vapor may
enter t e surrounding atmosp ere.
Vacuum out any solvent vapors (under fume
ood, for example).

Potential for personal injury by azardous materials
T e distillate located in t e collection flask may be a
azardous material.
Observe all safety regulations and disposal
requirements for t e distillate!
Loosen t e flask clip (Fig. 1/5, page 12) and remove t e collection
flask (Fig. 1/3, page 12). Empty t e collection flask if necessary.
