Overview
Introduction
The KF-4100 Scan Accelerator for IBM ImagePlus is a low cost
hardware/software solution that provides high-performance
scanning for any IBM ImagePlus workstation running IWPM/2 or
VisualInfo on OS/2 v2.xor OS/2 Warp. The KF-4100 provides direct
connection to a wide variety of production scanners. It produces fast
scan rates while performing coprocessor duties for an assortment of
critical image processing functions.
Many ImagePlus installations are performance constrained because
features such as bar code and patch code recognition are performed
on the PC client, where they slow down scanning. The KF-4100
offloads all scanning functions, including bar code and patch code
recognition, to a dedicated Kofax accelerator board specifically
designed for scanner throughput. Scanning throughput with the
KF-4100 can be improved by as much as 100% over ImagePlus alone.
The KF-4100 Scan Accelerator consists of the following components:
• Kofax accelerator board(s).
• Kofax KF-4100 Scan Accelerator software diskettes.
• Scanner interface cable(s), purchased separately from Kofax.

• Enhanced graphical user interface.

• Enhanced bar code recognition (360° search capability).
Detects up to five bar codes per page. Ten different bar code
types are supported.
• Provides a learn mode that automatically determines the
characteristics of bar codes on the page.
• Provides real-time scan analysis option.
• Enhanced test utility.
• Enhanced patch code recognition for scan job separation.
• Additional scanner support.
• Auto-rotation, for scan speeds up to 120% of rated speed.
• Image deskew.
• Picking rectangles.
• Bell+Howell ACE support.
• Fujitsu IPC II support.
• Provides scanner endorser/annotation support.
• New minimum and maximum paper sizes.
• Long paper (continuous sheet) scanning.
• Enhanced error reporting.

• Scanned images are cached on the accelerator board,
providing intelligent control at the board level and thereby
permitting higher-speed operation.

KF-4100 Configurations
The KF-4100 is available in several configurations for different
scanner models and scanning requirements. Depending on the
configuration ordered, the KF-4100 provides either basic or advanced
scanning features. The differences between basic and advanced
scanning features are listed below.
Basic Scanning Features:
Simplex scanning
Patch code detection
Bar code detection (horizontal only)
Advanced Scanning Features:
All basic scanning features
Simplex or duplex scanning
Real-time image rotation
Continuous sheet (long documents up to 13 feet)
Bar code detection (360° search, all directions)
Image deskew
Depending on your requirements, your KF-4100 consists of software
and one (or two) of the following Kofax scan accelerator boards:
KF-9275 For high-speed, simplex or duplex scanning and
advanced scanning applications. Contains 6 or 10
Mbytes of memory, depending on your scanner and
application. To perform duplex scanning on the
Bell+Howell 6338A and the TDC 2610W scanners,
two accelerators are required. Other duplex scanners
require one accelerator.
KF-9250 For medium-speed, simplex or duplex scanning and
basic scanning applications. Contains 6.5 Mbytes of
memory. To perform duplex scanning on the
Bell+Howell 6338A and the TDC 2610W scanners,
two accelerators are required. Other duplex scanners
require one accelerator.

KF-7300 For low-speed, simplex scanning and basic scanning
applications. Contains 3 Mbytes of memory (cannot
be upgraded).
The appropriate KF-4100 configuration for your requirements should
have been determined at the time of order. An incorrect
configuration may result in lower performance. If your KF-4100
configuration does not match your scanner and requirements, or for
a complete list of the available KF-4100 configurations, contact the
Kofax Sales Support staff at 714-727-1733, extension 6.

Installing the KF-4100
Introduction
This chapter describes the installation of the Kofax KF-4100 Scan
Accelerator for IBM ImagePlus. Installation of the KF-4100 includes
the following:
• Installing the KF-4100 hardware.
• Installing the KF-4100 software.
• Selecting a scanner.
Before you begin the installation, be sure you have the following:
• KF-4100 Scan Accelerator board(s).
• KF-4100 Scan Accelerator software diskettes (2).
• Name and model number of your scanner.
• Scanner interface cable(s).

Installing the KF-4100 Hardware
This section provides instructions for installing the Kofax KF-4100
hardware. Hardware installation includes the following:
• Setting jumpers on the Kofax accelerator board to configure
the interrupt and I/O address.
• Installing the Kofax accelerator board (two boards for some
duplex scanners).
• Connecting the scanner.
Setting the Interrupt and I/O Address
Before installing your Kofax accelerator board in your system, you
should set the interrupt line and I/O address on the accelerator to
ensure that it will not conflict with other boards in the system. Each
Kofax accelerator contains sets of jumpers for setting the interrupt
and I/O address. For details on these jumper settings, refer to
Appendix A, Configuring the Kofax Accelerator Board.
After setting the jumpers on the accelerator board(s), write down the
interrupt and I/O address you selected. You will need this
information later for installing and configuring the KF-4100 software.
Installing the Kofax Accelerator Board (ISA)
Follow the instructions in this section to install the Kofax accelerator
board in an ISA-based system.
If you are installing the Kofax accelerator board in a Micro Channel
computer, refer to Appendix B, Micro Channel Installation.

Important
Observe the following precautions for handling printed circuit
boards throughout the installation:
• Turn the computer power off before installing any component.
• Before handling a memory module or circuit board, discharge
static electricity from yourself and the work area by touching the
metal chassis of the computer.
• Handle the components by the edges, and do not touch the metal
surface of the board or memory module.
• Keep each component in the original shipping package until you
are ready to install it.
Install the accelerator in any available 8-bit or 16-bit slot in your
computer as shown in Figure 2-1.
Note: If you use an 8-bit slot, the interrupt line must be set at
interrupt 9 or below.
If you have a duplex scanner, you will need to install two Kofax
accelerator boards: a primary and a secondary accelerator. Before
installing the accelerators, verify that the interrupt numbers and I/O
addresses are unique for each accelerator.
