Important/Notable Information
While all of the information in this manual is important, there are some pieces of information
where special attention needs to be paid to avoid equipment damage, or specific information
needs to be emphasized. This information will be handled as follows:
IMPORTANT Indicates an operating procedure, practice, or condition that, if
not strictly followed, may cause equipment damage.
Note: Indicates additional information or emphasizes a topic related to the subject
being discussed.
Field Service
Kustom Signals, Inc. can provide field service for start-up assistance, training, maintenance,
and replacement/spare parts for new and existing equipment. Contact a Kustom Signals, Inc.
representative by calling 1-800-835-0156 or 1-620-431-2700.
Careful Placement of Components
Care should be taken when considering the placement of components. This is especially
important with components that will be worn by the officer (i.e. the wireless microphone).
WARNING Placement of items on the duty belt can restrict ready access to
important equipment.
The location of the wireless audio transmitter or any other
device provided with this system that is carried on the officer’s
person should be chosen with great care and consideration.
After a location is chosen, the officer should test access to and
practice drawing primary items, such as service firearms and
secondary defense devices such as aerosol subject restraint,
batons, and electronic control devices, etc. Proper operation of
handheld radios and other signaling devices should also be
tested as should access to handcuffs and other restraining
devices.

G3 Vision In-Car Video System
Chapter 1
Component Description
General Description
This operator manual is intended to provide the user of the Digital Eyewitness®G3 Vision
(may be abbreviated as G3 Vision or as Vision system) in-car video system with easy to follow
instructions for operating the system. The manual is divided into chapters, each of which
provides a set of descriptions to assist the user in understanding system operation.
The G3 Vision is available as a base system package, and may be configured with many
additional features. A detailed list of the basic G3 Vision package and the additional features
will be covered on the following pages.
IMPORTANT This manual is laid out in a component-by-component format.
The technician does not have to install components in the same
order that they appear in the manual. For example, the
technician may want to install the mirror monitor prior to the
DVR, even though the DVR information appears first in the
manual. All components should be installed and cables routed,
prior to installing the vehicle trim panels.
Basic G3 Vision System
The base G3 Vision system is comprised of the following components:
•Digital Video Recorder (DVR)
•Zoom camera
•40GB hard drives (hot-swappable)
•Mirror monitor controller
•Wireless audio transmitter (radio)/docking station
•DVR mounting kit
•Battery backup
•Cabling (either short or long, depending on final mounting position)
•Camera/wireless audio transmitter (radio) base combination mount

DVR Front Panel
The front panel of the DVR is where the controls for the DVR unit are found, as well as where
the hard drive bay and the lock for the hard drive are located.
Figure 1-2. Front Panel of the DVR
The front panel of the DVR includes the following items:
•POWER button
•CAM button
•ICM button
•LO MEDIA indicator
•MENU button
•REC button
•◄◄ (fast rewind) button
•■(stop) button
•►(play) button
•►► (fast forward) button
•Drive bay and recording media
•Drive bay lock
Each of these control buttons is backlit with an LED.
POWER Button
The POWER button is located along the top edge of the DVR. As its name indicates, this
button is used to turn the system on and off.
IMPORTANT Some G3 Vision configurations have the POWER button
disabled. In these applications, when the POWER button is
pressed, nothing happens.
When the POWER button is pressed, a voltage signal is sent to the internal controller. The
controller must see this voltage for approximately one (1) second before the controller will act
upon the request. This requirement prevents accidentally turning the G3 Vision system on or
off.
Once the G3 Vision is turned on, it takes approximately 70 seconds to initialize the system.

CAM Button
The CAM button is used to toggle between the available displays. The way that this button
functions varies based on how the Vision system is configured and what mode it is currently
operating in.
While In Idle Mode
When the Vision system is idle, pressing the CAM button will toggle through all of the cameras
connected to the system. These images are not recorded in this mode.
While In Single Camera Recording Mode
When the Vision system is operating in single camera recording mode, each press of the CAM
button will toggle to the next available camera in the sequence. As the Vision system switches
from one camera to the next, the recorded images will switch with the camera. The images will
remain in a single video file. The Vision system monitors the camera connections and can
determine how many cameras are currently connected to the system. The system will only
select cameras that are connected to the system. It will not select ports that are not used.
While In Simultaneous Recording Mode
When the Vision system is operating in simultaneous recording mode, the video from all
cameras that have been identified in the simultaneous recording menu are recorded
simultaneously. The Vision system may have up to four (4) cameras attached to it, but the
system does not have to have all attached cameras listed in the simultaneous recording menu.
When the officer presses the CAM switch, the system will only switch between the cameras
that are simultaneously recording.
Unlike the operation described in single camera recording mode, when in simultaneous
recording mode the system continues to record the video from all of the programmed cameras
regardless as to which one is being displayed on the monitor.

G3 Vision In-Car Video System
ICM Button
When the G3 Vision system is equipped with an in-car microphone, the microphone is not on
all the time. The in-car microphone (ICM) button on the front panel of the DVR is used to turn
the in-car microphone (when equipped) on when desired and turn it back off when the officer is
finished with it.
When the ICM is turned on, audio to the monitor is turned off, as is the record indicator on the
front of the zoom camera, even as the system continues to record. In addition to these
actions, an “I” indicator will appear on the monitor to provide a quick reference that the in-car
microphone is turned on.
IMPORTANT The in-car microphone MUST be turned off prior to trying to
playback the recording.
LO Media Indicator / Button
This item is an indicator that is used to indicate when the recording media in the drive bay of
the DVR is nearly full. When there are 30 minutes of recording capacity left on the media, the
light will start to blink. The indicator will continue to blink at a constant, yet steady rate. When
the amount of space remaining on the media reaches 15 minutes, the indicator will start
blinking at a faster rate.
When the recording media is completely full, the indicator will light constantly and a message
will display on the monitor that says “MEDIA FULL”.
IMPORTANT When the recording media is completely full, the G3 Vision will
not record. The G3 Vision system is specifically designed to
NOT record over previous recordings.
The LO Media button is also used to dim the LEDs on the front panel of the DVR in steps, with
the last step being a complete blackout of all LEDs. Continued pressing of this button will
cycle the DVR LEDs through stages of brightness.
MENU Button
If the officer presses the MENU button when the DVR is NOT recording, it will allow the officer
to access the G3 Vision menu system.
The G3 Vision menu system will be covered in more detail in Chapter 2, Using the G3 Vision
Menu System.

REC Button
The REC button has one main function, to manually initiate recording. This remains true, even
if the system is set up for auto record. With auto record, any one of several events can
automatically trigger the record function. This does not change the fact that the officer may still
manually initiate the record function, if they desire.
The officer may initiate two different modes of recording with the record button:
•single camera recording
•multi-camera recording
IMPORTANT Prior to initiating multi-camera recording, the system must be
equipped with multiple cameras and the desired cameras must
be selected in the multiple camera menu as being cameras to
record simultaneously.
If the REC button is pressed once, the G3 Vision will commence single camera recording. A
Record symbol (Á)will be displayed on the system monitor.
If the REC button is pressed again, the G3 Vision will commence multi-camera recording, if the
system has been configured for multi-camera recording. The number of cameras recording
simultaneously will be displayed on the system monitor. For example, if four (4) cameras were
recording simultaneously, (4Á) would be displayed.
If the REC button is pressed again during multi-camera recording, the G3 Vision will return to
single camera recording mode. The camera that will be recorded in single camera mode will
be whichever camera was being recorded in single camera record mode prior to switching to
simultaneous record.
The LED that is used to illuminate this button will flash when the system is recording.
◄◄ (Fast Rewind) Button
The ◄◄ button performs several different functions, depending on the current operating state
of the G3 Vision system.
•During video playback, the officer may press and hold the ◄◄ button to search through
the video while the video is being rewound.
•When reviewing a list of recordings, pressing the ◄◄ button will move the cursor up the
list.
•While in a menu screen, the ◄◄ button may be used, in conjunction with the
►► button, to toggle certain functions on and off.
•While in a menu screen entering data, the ◄◄ button may be used as a backspace or
to back up along a line of text.

■(Stop) Button
The ■button performs several different functions, depending on the current operating state of
the G3 Vision system.
•The primary function of the ■button is to stop recording. This is the only method for
manually stopping the record function, even if the emergency lights, siren or crash
detect sensor initiated the record function.
IMPORTANT Even if the G3 Vision uses auto record (recording triggered by
wireless transmitter, emergency light, siren, or crash detect
activation), the DVR will not stop recording when those devices
are turned off. The officer MUST manually stop the recorder by
pressing the ■button.
•When reviewing a recording, pressing this button will stop the playback of the video.
•When operating within the G3 Vision menu system, the ■button may be used to either
select a function, or may be used to navigate up and down a list.
►(Play) Button
The ►button performs several different functions, depending on the current operating state of
the G3 Vision system.
•When the G3 Vision is not recording, pressing the ►button will bring up a list of
recordings that are currently stored on the recording media. The operator may navigate
through the list using the buttons on the front of the DVR. When the desired recording
is found, the officer may play it by pressing the ►button.
•When operating within the G3 Vision menu system, the ►button may be used to either
select a function, or may be used to navigate up and down a list.
►► (Fast Forward) Button
The ►► (fast forward) button performs several different functions, depending on the current
operating state of the G3 Vision system.
•During video playback, the officer may press and hold the ►► button to search through
the video at a higher speed while the video is being viewed.
•When reviewing a list of recordings, pressing the ►► button will move the cursor up the
list.
•While in a menu screen, the ►► button may be used, in conjunction with the
◄◄ button, to toggle certain functions on and off.
•While in a menu screen entering data, the ►► button may be used as a spacebar or to
move forward along a line of text.

Drive Bay and Recording Media
On the front of the G3 Vision DVR is the drive bay for the recording media. The drive bay is
designed for a 2.5-inch USB hard drive enclosure. The enclosure may contain a 40 GB hard
drive or an 8 GB or 16 GB flash drive.
The recording media is simply plug and play. The recording media is “hot swappable”, which
means that it can be removed or installed while the DVR is on. However, the DVR cannot
record if the recording media is not locked in the drive bay.
IMPORTANT Kustom Signals, Inc. highly recommends that a specific officer,
or officers (not the officer(s) assigned to the vehicle) be
responsible for swapping out the recording media. Kustom
Signals, Inc. has provided a Daily Log for recording the
removal/replacement of recording media from the vehicle. It is
located in Appendix A of this manual.
Drive Bay Lock
Just to the left of the drive bay is the drive bay lock. The lock is used to secure the drive
enclosure in the bay. When the lock is in the unlocked position, the key cannot be removed,
and the DVR will not recognize the recording media in the drive bay. The lock must be in the
locked position to remove the key and to have the DVR recognize the recording media.
IMPORTANT If the DVR does not recognize the recording media (i.e. the drive
bay is empty or the drive bay lock is unlocked), the DVR will not
record and the user will not be able to make changes to many of
the system settings.

Manual Zoom
The top button on the rear control panel of the zoom camera is an elongated button with the
letters “T” and “W” imprinted on it. “T” stands for telephoto (close-up), and “W” stands for wide
angle.
This button is a rocker control. If the operator presses on the “T”, the lens will zoom in until the
operator releases the button, or until the camera is zoomed all the way in. If the operator
presses on the “W”, the lens will zoom out until the operator releases the button, or until the
camera is zoomed all the way out.
The camera is designed with 10X optical zoom and 10X digital zoom, for a combined 100X
total zoom.

AF (AutoFocus) Button
The zoom camera is equipped with an AutoFocus feature that can be manually turned on and
off by the operator by pressing the AF button.
IMPORTANT During nighttime operation the camera may not be capable of
maintaining proper focus when operating in AutoFocus mode.
Kustom Signals, Inc. strongly recommends that the AutoFocus
feature be turned off during this type of operation.
If the officer wishes to activate full time Autofocus mode, they will press the AF button on the
back of the camera. For most daylight situations, AutoFocus will provide clear, high-quality
video. At night, however, AutoFocus is not recommended, as the camera is often not capable
of maintaining proper focus.
Note: If the system is powered up in AutoFocus mode while the camera is pointed at a
smooth, blank wall, the camera may never find its point of focus. Also, if the
system is powered up while the camera is looking at a large, close object, it may
be out of focus at a distance. It is best to do an AutoFocus/power up focus
routine with the camera looking at distant objects.
AZ (AutoZoom) Button
The AutoZoom feature has proven itself to be a most useful feature to zoom in on reflective
plates when recording at night. When viewing reflective plates with the camera at a wide
angle, the plates are unlikely to be legible. By zooming in, the camera can react to the bright
reflection and produce a readable plate. AutoZoom occurs with the touch of a single button,
allowing the officer’s attention to remain on the stopped vehicle.
BL (Back Light Compensation) Button
Back Light Compensation is a feature that can improve the quality of recordings made when
the camera is facing into the sunrise or sunset.
To activate Back Light Compensation, press the BL button on the back of the camera. If the
officer turns back light on for a scene that does not benefit from it, turn it off by pressing the BL
button again.
* Button
The * button is used to adjust the brightness of the LEDs that backlight the buttons on the
camera itself. Each press of the * button dims the backlighting one step. Successive presses
will dim the backlighting one step at a time until they are completely off. Another press of the
* button will turn the backlighting LEDs on to full brightness.
Record Indicator
Located on the front of the zoom camera, adjacent to the lens, is the record indicator. This is a
red LED that will illuminate when the G3 Vision system is in record mode.
There is one exception to this rule. If the In-Car Microphone (ICM) is turned on to record
conversations occurring in the vehicle, this LED will be turned off when in record mode. The
LED is turned off to keep it from drawing attention when the camera has been turned around to
record the events occurring in the back seat of the vehicle.
