Chapter 2:
The LandAirSea 3100 Tracking Unit
and Installation
It is strongly recommended that you take the unit out for a test drive before using it for an
actual application. This trial run will give you a feel for how the unit works. It is also
recommended the you use Lithium AA batteries as they last close to 3 times longer than
conventional alkaline batteries.
The first time you use the 3100 unit, place it on your dash board and drive a mile or two.
This will properly initialize the unit for your area.
Helpful Hint: Always leave the unit on after replacing the batteries. If you turn the unit
off it will have to initialize again which can take a few minutes. It is unnecessary to turn it
off since the unit will go into a very low power mode after 3 minutes of non-movement.
If you plan to leave the unit in a vehicle for more than a few days, make sure you use fresh
batteries.
If the unit does not wake up from sleep mode ( Power light is off in sleep mode, moving the
unit will wake it up), that is your indication that you need to replace the batteries.
2
Wheretoplacethe LandAirSea 3100-INT (InternalGPSantenna)
Make sure you choose a good location to place the unit for the best results. The easiest
location to place the unit is the glove box but depending on the design of the vehicle, it
may take longer to lock onto the location. If the glove box is very low inside the vehicle
with a lot of obstructions, it may not be able to track. In this case you will have to find a
better location to place the GPS unit.
Make sure that there isn’t any metal completely blocking this upward line of sight. GPS
signals will go through plastic, glass, rubber, fiberglass, cloth material, or anything else
not made of metal. The more metal obstructions that are above and around the GPS unit,
the longer it will take to lock onto the location

3
If you mount the GPS antenna inside the vehicle’s bumper, try to mount it as high up as
possible and preferably in the corner. Just remember, you cannot have a metal surface
directly above the GPS antenna.
Wheretoplace the LandAirSea 3100antenna(3100-EXT)
If you purchased the LandAirSea 3100-EXT, then you can place the actual unit anywhere
you like. However, make sure you place the GPS antenna in a location where it will have
good reception. The diagram below should give you some hints on where you can place
the GPS antenna.
NOT RECOMMENDED
ItisnotrecommendtomounttheGPSantennainthefollowinglocations:
1. In the trunk. If you mount the antenna in the trunk it will be almost completely enclosed
by metal surfaces. The tracking unit will not work.
2. In a bumper that is completely made of metal. Again, the metal will affect the results.

4
MakingthePowerConnectionsdirectlytothevehicle’sbattery
The diagram above shows how you would connect the power cable directly to the
vehicle’s battery. Remember, the Red is the Positive (+) and the Black is the Negative (-).
Figure 2.2. Power cable connections.
PowerCableConnectionDirectlytoBattery
If you are going to power the LandAirSea 3100 using an external power source, then
followthe simple diagram below.

Installing the Software
To begin the installation, place the software CD into your CD-ROM drive. The setup
program should begin automatically. If it doesn’t, you can run the setup program by
clicking on the Windows Start button and selecting Run. Type d:setup.exe. (Assuming
that d: is your CD-ROM drive).
The first choice you have when installing the software is the location to store the pro-
gram. The default location is C:\Program Files\LandAirSea Systems\SmartTrack-
PastTrack. The next option is the type of installation: Typical, Compact, and Custom.
Typical will install the entire program and maps of the the U.S. on your hard drive. This
will take up approximately 700 Mb of disk space. If you want to select only a few states,
choose Custom. Compact will install only the minimum number of files. With the Compact
option, you will need the CD to run the program every time which will increase the amount
of time it takes to display the maps.
Chapter 3:
Installing the Software
5

6
If you choose the Custom Installation, you will be asked which street maps you wish to
load. You are not limited to the number of maps you load but each state uses between 5
MB and 15 MB of hard disk space.

MAKE SURE YOU CLICK ON THE BOX NEXT
TO THE STATE YOU ARE SELECTING.
WARNING!!! Make sure when selecting the states that you click on the box next to
that state. If the box is not checked after you click it, that state will not be loaded.

Chapter 5:
Uploading New Data to the Software
Before you download data from you LandAirSea 3100 unit, make sure you have an
available serial port. It is helpful to know the COM port number but not necessary. Plug
in the download cable to the computer and the 3100 unit. Make sure the are fully plugged
in. The connection to the 3100 unit is not forgiving so make sure it is plugged in all the
way. Now click on the button with the number “3” on it.
Figure5.1 - TheLandAirSea3100 download window
Click the Find button. This will prompt the software to start looking for your 3100 unit.
When the software finds the unit, the Port will sayASSIGNED. If the software does not
find the unit, check your connections and make sure the green light on the unit is on.
If you want the data that is stored in the 3100 unit to be erased after the download, then
check the checkbox that says “Erase logged data after download”.
Click the download button and your tracking data should start downloading. You will be
prompted to save the data on your computer. Make sure you know where you are saving
the data for future reference. For example, in your “My Documents” folder.

10
Replaying/Simulatingthedata:
To play back the data, click once on the play button. You will see the car icon move and
the instruments replay the actual travel.
PauseandStepPlay:
Click on the Pause / Step Play button if you wish to pause the data. When the data is
paused you can continue to click the button and the software will move forward through
the data sample by sample. Pausing the data is very important if you wish to scroll (See
Scrolling / Panning) to different portions of the map where the car icon is not displayed.
PlaybackSlower /PlaybackFaster:
To speed up or slow down the replaying of the data, click on the Playback Slower or
Playback Faster buttons. Holding the button down does not rewind or fast forward the
data. You need to single click on the button to change the speed of playback.
ResetMap:
This button will reset the map to its original position and zoom level. It will also reset the
data playback to the beginning.
ViewEntireU.S:
Clicking this button will zoom out to a scale that will allow you to view the entire U.S.
Chapter 6:

output of the LandAirSea 3100.

13
Changing the Track Colors
You can change the track colors by selecting View | Select Track Color. There are three
different color selections available: Speed Below, SpeedAbove and Normal. (See Figure
7.1). The example shown in Figure 7.1 will display all speeds below 20 MPH in red, all
speeds above 60 MPH in blue and display all other speeds in Cyan. Clicking on the
Enable Color Speed Display will display the entire track with the normal track color.
Figure 7.1 - Track Display Color Setup

precise when doing this. If you do not click exactly on the data track, the car icon will not
reposition to the point you click on.
Distance(Mileage ) Calculations:
You can use this feature to determine the entire distance of the data loaded or a section of
your data. Clicking on this button will bring up a bubble on the map telling you the entire
distance travelled. If you click twice on the data track, once for the start, and second for
the end, it will tell you the distance travelled between those two data points.
