Warnings & installation
✔ ✔
✔ ✔
✔ Connection to the mains supply
The unit is supplied with an external power supply. Before switching on the unit, make certain that the
mains voltage matches that shown on the rear (a tolerance of up to ±10% is acceptable).
✔ ✔
✔ ✔
✔ Switching on and off
CAUTION: before switching on or off, make certain the sound system’s amplifiers are off: this will avoid
signal peaks, which are annoying and sometimes dangerous (particularly for speaker enclosures).
✔ ✔
✔ ✔
✔ Connecting and preventing or identifying interference
First of all, check that the apparatus is installed in a place free from industrial or RF (radio frequency)
interference. Avoid installing your equipment very near radio or TV sets, mobile phones, etc., as these
can cause noisy interference.
When connecting the other parts of your sound system, watch out for the so-called “ground loops”, which
could cause hum and jeopardize the products’s excellent Sound-to-Noise and low distortion characteristics.
The best way (even if not always feasible) to avoid ground loops is to connect the electric ground of all
the equipment to a single central point (“star” system). In this case, the central point can be the mixer.
✔ ✔
✔ ✔
✔ Protection and maintenance
Don’t force knobs, switches or faders: these are designed and manufactured to respond to light pressure
and could be damaged if used with excessive force.
Take care of your connector cables, a very frequent cause of small/big problems. Always grip them by
the connector, avoid pulling them forcefully and wind them without forming knots or sharp bends: they’ll
last longer this way, and be more reliable, which is a definite advantage.
Avoid exposing the product to strong direct sunlight, high temperatures or intense vibrations, in very dusty
or particularly damp surroundings or, even worse, in the rain: this will help to avoid the risk of faulty
operation, deterioration or even electric shocks and fires.
The product is built in shock-resistant material. Nevertheless, protect it during transport with a flight-case
to avoid the risk of any casual accidents.
When you’ve finished using the apparatus, it’s always advisable to protect it from dust, but any dust that
does form should be removed using a cloth or a soft brush. Never use alcohol, acetone or any solvents.
The effect does not require any other maintenance.
✔ ✔
✔ ✔
✔ In the event of breakdown
All user-adjustable parts are external and easily accessed.
In the event of a breakdown, do not open the apparatus, but contact the nearest Generalmusic/Lem
Service Centre.
✔ ✔
✔ ✔
✔ Keeping the documentation
Keep this user’s manual for future consultation. Also remember that the effect will get a better price on
the secondhand market if (as well as being in good condition) it has its original documentation and
packaging.

Introduction
Congratulations for having chosen FX 22!
LEM FX 22 is a high-quality, extremely user-friendly multi-effect unit which includes TWO
SEPARATE STEREO EFFECT (with separate inputs and output in common).
FX 22 has been designed by LEM around the powerful RED 208 DSP, the same as is
used on the FALCON digital mixer. The 40-bit processing together with the use of 20
and 24-bit converters ensures the maximum audio quality and allows to obtain very rich
and accurate effects.
Each of the two section of the FX 22 includes 11 PRESETS BANKS simple (reverbs,
delays, modulations) or combined (reverb + delay, reverb + chorus), ideal for use with a
wide variety of types of signal: vocals, percussion, string and wind instruments, etc. 11
different variations are available for each PRESET BANK, giving a total of 121 + 121
PRESETS. In this way, you can find stored in the unit’s memories the most common
settings ready for use and all you have to do is choose between them whichever is most
suited to your requirements.
Two rotary selectors, output volume and balance are the only simple controls that give
access to the essential but effective functions of the FX 22. Acting on the appropriate
selector, FX 22 can be used both in DUAL mode, with two effects on two separate signals
or COMBI mode, with two effects in series on the same signal.
Supplied with an external power supply, the FX 22 multi-effect unit comes in half-rack
format (1 unit) and can be installed in a standard 19" rack by using an optional adapter
which can be requested from your dealer (cod. 970.294).

Getting started
To start using your FX 22,first of all connect the external power supply to the socket on the rear panel,
then to the mains supply.
To discover the unit’s potential, proceed gradually; firstly using one effect on a single instrument, then
two effects simultaneously and lastly, two independent effects on two different instruments.
SITUATION A: 1 INSTRUMENT / 1 EFFECT
To begin to hear and familiarize with the FX 22 presets, it’s advisable to use just one of the multi-effect’s
two sections. Proceed as follows:
1 -Connect the mixer’s EFF SEND (or your instrument’s output) to the FX 22 input A.
2 -Connect the OUTPUT of the FX 22 to the mixer’s EFF RETURN (or the amplifier).
3 -Set the MODE selector at DUAL.
4 -Adjust input level with the FX A INPUT LEVEL potentiometer (rear panel), making certain the red
PEAK LED doesn’t remain permanently lit.
5 -You can now move from one preset to another in the FX A section using the two PRESETS and
VARIATIONS knobs.
6 -Adjust the output level with the OUT potentiometer.
7 -You can set the balance between the original signal and effect using the MIX potentiometer. In the
DRY position, only the original signal is heard, whereas in the WET position, only the result of the
effect is heard.

SITUATION B: 1 INSTRUMENT / 2 EFFECTS
The FX 22 allows you to use two different effects simultaneously on the same signal.
To try out this function, leave the unit connected as for the first experiment, but set the MODE selector
at COMBI: the effects of the two FX A and FX B sections are now summed on the same signal.
Select two different effects (for example Reverb and Delay, or Reverb and Chorus): with the two sections’
OUT and MIX potentiometers: you can now control the quantity and balance of the individual effects. Try
various combinations of intensity and balance.

Getting started
SITUATION C: 2 INSTRUMENTS / 2 EFFECTS
In DUAL mode, on the other hand, the FX 22 operates like two completely separate processors and allows
you to process two signals or two different instruments completely independently.
To try out DUAL mode, proceed as follows:
1 -Connect send 1 of the mixer (or the output of the first instrument) to the FX A input.
2 -Connect send 2 of the mixer (or the output of the second instrument) to the FX B input.
3 -Connect the OUTPUT of the FX 22 to the mixer’s EFF RETURN (or to the amplifier).
4 -Set the MODE selector on DUAL.
5 -Adjust the input levels using the INPUT LEVEL potentiometers on the panel rear, making certain the
red PEAK LEDs don’t remain permanently lit.
6-You can now select two independent effects for the two signals by using the PRESETS and
VARIATIONS controls of the two FX A and FX B sections and set the effects’ OUT LEVEL and MIX
as required.

FX A PRESETS
Rotary selector for choosing the type of preset used by the FX A section.
11 positions are available: 1/6 - Reverbs, 7 - Delay, 8/9 - Modulations, 10/11 - Combo.
FX A PEAK
Peak LED of the FX A section: indicates
that the input signal level is too high. If the
LED lights up briefly, this is acceptable, but
if on the other hand the LED remains
constantly lit, the level must by lowered
(INPUT LEVEL rear panel).
The PEAK LED also flashes when the unit
is momentarily on BYPASS: this occurs when switching on the unit and changing presets. The two PEAK
LEDs flash simultaneously when the unit is put on BYPASS using the pedal connected to the
FOOTSWITCH connector (back panel).
FX A VARIATIONS
Rotary selector for choosing the variations of section FX A’s presets.
Each effect has 11 variations. The variations can modify some of the effect’s parameters, the tempo or
(in some cases) the type of effect obtained. Read the preset specification table for further information on
the variations’ characteristics.
MODE
Selector for the FX 22’s two operating modes: DUAL and COMBI.
FX 22 - DUAL MODE
In DUAL mode, the two FX A and FX B sections work in parallel and completely independently. You
have in actual fact two distinct effects at your disposal, with separate inputs and the same stereo output.
You can therefore connect two different mixer sends or two different instruments to the FX A and FX B
inputs of the effects unit and choose a different effect for each of them.

NB: COMBO PRESETS are particularly effective in DUAL mode when, processing two different signals
on the two lines of the FX 22, you have a total of four different effects at your disposal from just one unit.
PRESET sticker
The complete list of the FX 22’s 121 PRESETS is printed on the unit’s cover. In addition, along with this
manual you’ll find a useful sticker which can be used as a quick reminder and which can be applied, for
example, to the free half of the optional rack adapter (cod. 970.294).
