Chapter 1. Safety information
This chapter presents the following safety information that yo need to be familiar with before yo service a
Lenovo notebook comp ter.
Genera safety
Follow these r les to ens re general safety:
• Observe good ho sekeeping in the area of the machines d ring and after maintenance.
• When lifting any heavy object:
1. Make s re that yo can stand safely witho t slipping.
2. Distrib te the weight of the object eq ally between yo r feet.
3. Use a slow lifting force. Never move s ddenly or twist when yo attempt to lift.
4. Lift by standing or by p shing p with yo r leg m scles; this action removes the strain from the
m scles in yo r back. Do not attempt to lift any object that weighs more than 16 kg (35 lb) or that you
think is too heavy for you.
• Do not perform any action that ca ses hazards to the c stomer, or that makes the eq ipment nsafe.
• Before yo start the machine, make s re that other service technicians and the c stomer's personnel are
not in a hazardo s position.
• Place removed covers and other parts in a safe place, away from all personnel, while yo are servicing the
machine.
• Keep yo r tool case away from walk areas so that other people will not trip over it.
• Do not wear loose clothing that can be trapped in the moving parts of a machine. Make s re that yo r
sleeves are fastened or rolled p above yo r elbows. If yo r hair is long, fasten it.
• Insert the ends of yo r necktie or scarf inside clothing or fasten it with a non-cond ctive clip, abo t 8
centimeters (3 inches) from the end.
• Do not wear jewelry, chains, metal-frame eyeglasses, or metal fasteners for yo r clothing.
Attention: Metal objects are good electrical cond ctors.
• Wear safety glasses when yo are hammering, drilling, soldering, c tting wire, attaching springs, sing
solvents, or working in any other conditions that might be hazardo s to yo r eyes.
• After service, reinstall all safety shields, g ards, labels, and gro nd wires. Replace any safety device that
is worn or defective.
• Reinstall all covers correctly before ret rning the machine to the c stomer.
• Fan lo vers on the machine help to prevent overheating of internal components. Do not obstr ct fan
lo vers or cover them with labels or stickers.
E ectrica safety
Observe the following r les when working on electrical eq ipment.
Important: Use only approved tools and test eq ipment. Some hand tools have handles covered with a soft
material that does not ins late yo when working with live electrical c rrents.Many c stomers have, near
their eq ipment, r bber floor mats that contain small cond ctive fibers to decrease electrostatic discharges.
Do not se this type of mat to protect yo rself from electrical shock.
• Find the room emergency power-off (EPO) switch, disconnecting switch, or electrical o tlet. If an electrical
accident occ rs, yo can then operate the switch or npl g the power cord q ickly.
• Do not work alone nder hazardo s conditions or near eq ipment that has hazardo s voltages.
• Disconnect all power before:
– Performing a mechanical inspection
– Working near power s pplies

– Removing or installing main nits
• Before yo start to work on the machine, npl g the power cord. If yo cannot npl g it, ask the c stomer
to power-off the wall box that s pplies power to the machine, and to lock the wall box in the off position.
• If yo need to work on a machine that has e posed electrical circ its, observe the following preca tions:
– Ens re that another person, familiar with the power-off controls, is near yo .
Attention: Another person m st be there to switch off the power, if necessary.
– Use only one hand when working with powered-on electrical eq ipment; keep the other hand in yo r
pocket or behind yo r back.
Attention: An electrical shock can occ r only when there is a complete circ it. By observing the above
r le, yo may prevent a c rrent from passing thro gh yo r body.
– When sing testers, set the controls correctly and se the approved probe leads and accessories for
that tester.
– Stand on s itable r bber mats (obtained locally, if necessary) to ins late yo from gro nds s ch as
metal floor strips and machine frames.
Observe the special safety preca tions when yo work with very high voltages; Instr ctions for these
preca tions are in the safety sections of maintenance information. Use extreme care when meas ring high
voltages.
• Reg larly inspect and maintain yo r electrical hand tools for safe operational condition.
• Do not se worn or broken tools and testers.
• Never assume that power has been disconnected from a circ it. First, check that it has been powered off.
• Always look caref lly for possible hazards in yo r work area. Examples of these hazards are moist floors,
non-gro nded power extension cables, power s rges, and missing safety gro nds.
• Do not to ch live electrical circ its with the reflective s rface of a plastic dental mirror. The s rface is
cond ctive; s ch to ching can ca se personal inj ry and machine damage.
• Do not service the following parts with the power on when they are removed from their normal operating
places in a machine:
– Power s pply nits
– P mps
– Blowers and fans
– Motor generators
– Similar nits as listed above
This practice ens res correct gro nding of the nits.
• If an electrical accident occ rs:
– Use ca tion; do not become a victim yo rself.
– Switch off power.
– Send another person to get medical aid.
Safety inspection guide
The p rpose of this inspection g ide is to assist yo in identifying potentially nsafe conditions. As each
machine was designed and b ilt, req ired safety items were installed to protect sers and service
technicians from inj ry. This g ide addresses only those items. Yo sho ld se good j dgment to identify
potential safety hazards d e to attachment of non-Lenovo feat res or options not covered by this inspection
g ide.
If any nsafe conditions are present, yo m st determine how serio s the apparent hazard co ld be and
whether yo can contin e witho t first correcting the problem.
Consider these conditions and the safety hazards they present:
• Electrical hazards, especially primary power (primary voltage on the frame can ca se serio s or fatal
electrical shock)
• Explosive hazards, s ch as a damaged cathode ray t be (CRT) face or a b lging capacitor
• Mechanical hazards, s ch as loose or missing hardware

To determine whether there are any potentially nsafe conditions, se the following checklist at the
beginning of every service task. Begin the checks with the power off, and the power cord disconnected.
Checklist:
1. Check exterior covers for damage (loose, broken, or sharp edges).
2. Power off the comp ter. Disconnect the power cord.
3. Check the power cord for:
a. A third-wire gro nd connector in good condition. Use a meter to meas re third-wire gro nd
contin ity for 0.1 ohm or less between the external gro nd pin and the frame gro nd.
b. The power cord sho ld be the a thorized type specified for yo r comp ter. Go to: http://
www.lenovo.com/serviceparts-look p
c. Ins lation m st not be frayed or worn.
4. Check for cracked or b lging batteries.
5. Remove the cover.
6. Check for any obvio s non-Lenovo alterations. Use good j dgment as to the safety of any non-Lenovo
alterations.
7. Check inside the nit for any obvio s nsafe conditions, s ch as metal filings, contamination, water or
other liq ids, or signs of fire or smoke damage.
8. Check for worn, frayed, or pinched cables.
9. Check that the power-s pply cover fasteners (screws or rivets) have not been removed or tampered
with.
Hand ing devices that are sensitive to e ectrostatic discharge
Any comp ter part containing transistors or integrated circ its (ICs) sho ld be considered sensitive to
electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD damage can occ r when there is a difference in charge between objects.
Protect against ESD damage by eq alizing the charge so that the machine, the part, the work mat, and the
person handling the part are all at the same charge.
Notes:
1. Use prod ct-specific ESD proced res when they exceed the req irements noted here.
2. Make s re that the ESD protective devices yo se have been certified (ISO 9000) as f lly effective.
When handling ESD-sensitive parts:
• Keep the parts in protective packages ntil they are inserted into the prod ct.
• Avoid contact with other people.
• Wear a gro nded wrist strap against yo r skin to eliminate static on yo r body.
• Prevent the part from to ching yo r clothing. Most clothing is ins lative and retains a charge even when
yo are wearing a wrist strap.
• Use a gro nded work mat to provide a static-free work s rface. The mat is especially sef l when
handling ESD-sensitive devices.
• Select a gro nding system, s ch as those listed below, to provide protection that meets the specific
service req irement.
Note: The se of a gro nding system to g ard against ESD damage is desirable b t not necessary.
– Attach the ESD gro nd clip to any frame gro nd, gro nd braid, or green-wire gro nd.
– When working on a do ble-ins lated or battery-operated system, se an ESD common gro nd or
reference point. Yo can se coax or connector-o tside shells on these systems.
– Use the ro nd gro nd prong of the ac pl g on ac-operated comp ters.

Grounding requirements
Electrical gro nding of the comp ter is req ired for operator safety and correct system f nction. Proper
gro nding of the electrical o tlet can be verified by a certified electrician.
