PRODUCT COMMERCIAL CODING
OTK2 LINEAR SYSTEM
DIMENSIONS :
See the enclosed mechanical drawing (Fig. 1 and Fig. 2)
WEIGHT:
Optical linear scale OTK2 1 Kg./m.
Read head(slider) 0,5 kg. (with standar 4 m cable)
Optical linear scale OTK 2.SR 0,9 kg./m.
Read head (slider) 0.5 Kg. (with standard 4 m cable)
SYSTEM:
Incremental linear transducer based on the optical reading of
crystal elements to which a chromium grid is photoengraved at
constant step.
The product includes:
OPTICAL LINEAR SCALE composed of the photoengraved
crystal encapsulated in an extruded aluminium alloy;
READ HEAD, self-guiding on bearings, that moves over the
crystal and, through the opto-electronic reading of the chromium
grid, generates pulses which are sent to the counting equipment
after appropriate electronic digitalisation.
OTK2 OPTICAL LINEAR SCALE
MODELS:
The OTK2 system is divided into two lines of product that differ in
the dimensions of the optical linear scale:
“OTK2” (Standard), with section of 22 x 37 mm
“OTK2.SR” (Lowered), with section of 22 x 32 mm
CASE :
Extruded aluminium alloy with oxidation treatment to thickness
that ensures elevated surface hardness and grants an attractive,
professional-looking colour.
To complete the scale's external structure and protect the
graduated crystal, we mount a pair of external lip seals in NBR
self-lubricating, anti-wear elastomer mix that ensure IP54 ,or IP64
protection against external agents.IP64 (with pressurissation)
PRECISION :
The system's precision and repeatability is the result of the
photoengraving technology and the selection of a crystal support.
The chromium grid photoengraving technology is applied by high-
resolution vacuum systems and guarantees a precision of +/-
0.005 mm/m
The use of a crystal support permits a low coefficient of expansion
and direct reading by transparency to be obtained.
Another feature of no less importance is that there is no electronic
interpolation in achieving up to 5 micron resolution, thus
permitting the greatest utilisation of the precision of the chromium
photoengraving process, an opportunity not afforded by systems
that process inductive, resistive or magnetic signals.
For these reasons, the OTK2 system does not offer choices of
precision but only the highest precision possible.
RESOLUTION :
The range of resolution available is as follows:
“10”as directly read by the crystal with a 20/20 micron step grid.
“05”as directly read by the crystal with a 10/10 micron step grid.
“01”as directly read by the crystal with a 10/10 micron step grid
and electronic interpolation by “5”
“005” as directly read by the crystal with a 10/10 micron
step grid and electronic interpolation by “10”
USEFUL STROKE:
In the standard OTK2 model, the stroke available ranges from 70
to 3120 mm .(table 1)
In the lowered OTK2.SR model, the stroke available ranges from
70 to 520 mm. (table 2)
TOTAL LENGTH:
In the standard OTK2 model, the total length is equal to:
useful stroke + 96 mm.
In the lowered OTK2.SR model, the total length is equal to:
useful stroke + 104 mm.
OTK2 READ HEAD (SLIDER)
Thanks to its mechanical and opto-electronic characteristics,
the read head or slider is the heart of the product's system.

INSTALLATION
DIMENSIONS :
The OTK2 linear incremental transducer system is guaranteed to be free of all
defects in manufacture and fully guaranteed for 12 months from date of purchase.
The failure to respect the assembly instructions and tolerance
values (see “MECHANICAL DRAWING”) invalidates the terms
of product warranty and releases LOGAN S.r.l. from liability for
malfunctions caused by incorrect installation.
INTRODUCTION:
Identify the most accessible and protected side for the
fastening of the OTK2 optical linear scale near the slide
guides.
The external neoprene lip seal must always face opposite the
work area of the machine tool.
With respect to the longitudinal and transversal axes of the
horizontal work surface, the lip seal must face down, with
respect to the vertical axes, it must face outwards.
Whenever installation cannot be made in this way, adequate
protection must be inserted.
If a choice must be made, it is better for the optical linear scale
to be able to move rather than the read head in order to avoid
the dragging of the connection cable.
ASSEMBLY:
−Position the axis in question at the center of its stroke and lock it
in place.
−Decide the position on the fixed part where the read head must be
applied and position the optical linear scale at the center of its
stroke in respect to this point.
−Check the position of all the locking handles, handwheels and
limit-switches to make sure that they do not interfere with the
transducers.
−If the optical linear scale or the read head cannot be mounted
directly on the surface of the machine or if there are no machined
flat surfaces, spacer blocks or support brackets must be used.
−The support brackets used must have an extremely stiff support
surface, while their assembly surfaces must be flat and parallel to
the stroke of the machine within a tolerance of +/-0.1 mm.
−Make sure that the connection cable leaving the head is long
enough to avoid interference with the machine during movement.
If the cable leaving the head must go upward, a loop must be
made downward in order to interrupt the flow of coolant running
along the cable.
−If the outlet of the cable must be inverted, the optical linear scale
can be completely rotated because the fixing holes are on both
sides.
ASSEMBLY AND ALIGNMENT OF THE OTK2 “OPTICAL LINEAR
SCALE”:
−Trace the positions of the bar's assembly holes on the desired
assembly surface, drill and then thread. Use 5 MA socket head
screws as fixing screws .
−Using a comparator, check the alignment of the upper part of the
bar and exactly along the steel section. The total parallelism must
be approx. +/-0.1 mm throughout the entire stroke.
NOTE :The Manufacturer reserves the right to make any and all
modifications deemed necessary for improvement without
notice.
ASSEMBLY OF THE OTK2 “READ HEAD”:
−Make sure that the movable surface where the optical linear scale
is applied is once again at the center of its stroke.
−The support surface for the read head compared to the support
surface obtained for the optical linear scale differs by 0.5 mm. with
a tolerance of +/-02 mm. The distance between the read head
and the optical linear scale is 1 mm with a tolerance of +/-0.2 mm
as shown in the mechanical drawing.
−The read head is equipped with three dowels that fill the space
between itself and the support surface. Those users who do not
wish to utilise this setting must create a support surface of their
own that respects the range of tolerance indicated.
−Trace the two read head fixing screw holes on the support
surface, drill and thread or drill a through hole and use a bolt with
nut.
−Check again to make sure that the read head's stroke does not
touch the covers at the end of the optical linear scale.
ATTENTION:
The support,(plastic stirrups) given with head of reading and positioned
on the extremity of the same head, have this function:
- block to transport (must conserve for spedition)
- “dima” during installation help mounting with tollerance
observation
At the end of instalation the support must be removed because it can
create an attrition in the slide of head ,limiting profit run with possible
damage of the same one.
FASTENING THE CABLE TO THE MACHINE :
−Fasten the cable in more than one place bearing in mind the
space required by the loops necessary for all machine
movements. Plug the measurement device's connector in and
lock it in place using the respective screws.
REPEATABILITY TESTING :
−We recommend making a check after installation to make sure
that the characteristics of operation and precision have been
guaranteed.
−Bring the table to one end of the stroke and position the base of
the comparator on the fixed part of the machine and the feeler pin
on the table.
−Set the display and the comparator to zero, shift the table to the
other end of the stroke and then return it back until the
comparator reads "zero". The display must also read "zero".
Note:
−Measurements must always be taken in the same direction in
order to avoid any mechanical play.
−Choose the zero-set point of the comparator that comes as close
as possible to the OTK2 read system axis.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE :
−The OTK2 system does not require particular maintenance, and
its correct use is the best guarantee for good operation.
−Evaluate the need for protective casing whenever required by
particular work conditions.
−Never permit accumulations of chips and any other substances
that may obstruct the smooth sliding of the read head.
−Do not use compressed air for cleaning near the lip seals.
−If the system has been assembled correctly and its length
correctly defined at the moment of order, when it completes its
stroke it should leave a sufficient safety margin at the end;
otherwise, set the electrical limit-switches and the mechanical
stops accordingly.
−Before proceeding to transducer maintenance operations,
disconnect the electrical power supply coming from the counting
equipment.
