The
markings
extendingdown-
wardfromthezero lineonthe
chart are called "surfaceclut-
ter." These markings are
caused by waveaction, boat
wakes,temperature inversion,
and othernatural causes.
TheSurface
Clarity
Control (5CC)
reduces oreliminates surface clutter
signals from the display. 3CC variesthe sensitivity of the receiver,
decreasing itnearthesurface and gradually increasing itasthe depth
increases.Themaximumdepththat5CCwillaffectis75%oftheselected
depth range. For example, on a0-60footrangewith maximum 8CC,
surface clutterwill be reduceddownto45feet.
Therearethreelevelsof8CCavailable ontheX-55:
low, medium, and
high.Whenit'sturned
onforthefirst
time,
the8CClevelislow.Tochange
it, press theMENUkey fivetimes,then press the key adjacent
tothe
"ADJUSTCHARTSURFACE CLARITY" labeluntiltheblackboxisonthe
desired 3CClevel.
Pressthekey nexttothe"EXIT" labelwhen you're
finished.
ASP(AdvancedSignal Processing)
TheASPfeatureis a noiserejection systembuilt intotheX-55that
constantly evaluates the effectsof boatspeed, waterconditions,
and
interference. Thisautomatic feature gives you
thebest
displaypossible
undermostconditions.
TheASPfeature isaneffectivetoolin combating noise. Insonar
terms,
noiseisany
undesired signal. Itiscaused
by electrical andmechanical
sources suchas bilgepumps, engineignitionsystems andwiring,air
bubblespassing overthefaceofthe
transducer, evenvibrationfromthe
engine. Inallcases, noise
canproduce
unwanted marksonthe
display.
TheASPfeaturehastwolevels-Normaland
High.If
you
have
high
noise
levels,try usingthe
"Nigh"
ASP
setting.However,if
you
arehavingtrouble
with
noise,wesuggest
that
you
takestepstofindtheinterference source
andfixit,
ratherthan
continually using
theunitwiththe
high
ASP
setting.

Whenturnedonforthefirsttime,theX-S5automatically placesthe

feet,regardless ofthebottom
depth.
Thisin essence, givesyou
aSfootzoom.Youcanchoose
anysegment
ofthe
water, as longasthe
distancebetween theupperlimitand lowerlimit is5 feet (2meters,1
fathom) ormore.Usingthezoomfeature(described inthenext
section)
lets you viewa segmentof the wateron the screen's right side (for
example, from20to30feet),andazoom ofthatsegment
ontheleft.
