3. Disconnectthe computerandperipheralpowercordsfromtheirACoutletsorinletsinorderto
preventelectricshock orsystemboarddamage.
Inaddition,take note ofthese safetyguidelineswhen appropriate:

beforeremovingacomponent,removingasystemboard,ordisconnectingaperipheraldevice
fromthe computer.
§When youdisconnectacable,pull on itsconnectororon itsstrain-reliefloop,noton the cable
itself.Some cableshave aconnectorwith lockingtabs.Ifyouaredisconnectingthistype ofcable,
press in on thelockingtabs before disconnectingthe cable.Asyoupull connectorsapart,keep
themevenlyalignedtoavoidbendinganyconnectorpins.Also,before connectingacable,
make sure bothconnectorsare correctlyorientedandaligned.

ProtectingAgainstElectrostatic Discharge
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)Warning
ElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)isthe enemyofsemiconductordevices.Youshouldalways
take precautionstoeliminate anyelectrostaticcharge fromyour bodyandclothingbefore
touchinganysemiconductordevice orcardbyusingan electrostaticwriststrapand/or
rubbermat.
Staticelectricitycan harmsystemboards.Performservice atan ESD workstation andfollowproperESD
procedurestoreduce the risk ofdamage tocomponents.Magma stronglyencouragesyoutofollow
properESD procedures,which can include wriststraps andsmocks,when servicingequipment.
Youcan also take the followingsteps topreventdamage fromelectrostaticdischarge(ESD):
•When unpackingastatic-sensitive componentfromitsshippingcarton,donotremove the
component’santi-staticpackagingmaterialuntilyouare ready toinstall the componentin a
computer.Justbefore unwrappingthe anti-staticpackaging,be sure youare atan ESD
workstation orare grounded.
•When transportingasensitive component,firstplaceitin an anti-staticcontainerorpackaging.
•Handle all sensitive componentsatan ESD workstation. Ifpossible,use anti-staticfloorpadsand
workbenchpads.
•Handle componentsandboardswith care.Don’t touch the componentsorcontactson aboard.

Chapter2HardwareInstallation
The followingsteps will guide youthrough the installation ofyourMagmaExpansion System.
CAUTION
Hardware installation shall be performedonlybyqualifiedservice personnel.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)Warning
Alladd-in cardsare susceptible toelectrostaticdischarge.When movingcards,itisbestto
carrythe cardsin anti-staticpackaging. Ifyouneedtosetacircuitcarddown,be sure to
placeitinsideoron top ofan anti-staticsurface.Formoreinformation,see “Protecting
AgainstElectrostaticDischarge”inthe Preface.
WARNING
High voltagesare presentinside the expansionchassiswhen the unit’spowercordis
pluggedintoan electricaloutlet.Disconnectthe powercordfromthe ACoutletbefore
removingthe enclosurecover.Turningthe systempoweroffatthe poweron/off switch
doesnotremove powertocomponents.High voltage is still present.
CAUTION
Before touchinganythinginside the enclosure,move toan ESD station andfollowproper
ESD procedures.Failure todoso mayresultin electrostaticdischarge,damagingthe

firmlyseated.Then secure the cardintothe slotwith amountingscrew.
Itisimportanttoknowhowmanylanesthe hostcomputerslotcan support.The HostInterfacecarddoes
notneedtobe configuredforthe same numberoflanesasthe hostcomputerslot.The HostInterface
Cardwill train down towhateverthe PCIeslotspeedisthatitdetects.
Forexample,ifthe HostInterfaceCardisinstalledin aX4lane cardslot;leave the HostInterface Card
settingasis.The hostcomputerdictateswhatlinkwidthandspeedthe expansion systemwill operate in.
Install PCIe Cards (STEP 4)
Remove slotcoversandinstall PCIecards.
Make sure thatall cardsarefullyseatedin theirPCIecardslots.When correctlyseated,there will be afirm
resistance whenyoupull upgentlyon the card.Tokeepthe cardsin place,securethemin the enclosure
with theirretainingscrews.Aftersecuringthe cardsverifythattheydonottouch each other.
Some cardmanufacturersrecommendthatyouinstall theirsoftware driverpriortoinstallingthe card. Ifthis
isthe case,be sure toinstall the carddriverbefore connectingEXPRESSBOX 3400tothe computer.
