Keepyour work area cleanand well
lit.
Clutteredbenchesand dark areas invite
accidents.
Donotoperate power tools
in
explosiveatmospheres, such as
in
the presence
of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may
ignite the dust or fumes.
Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away while operating a power tool.
Distractions can cause you to loose control.
Double Insulatedtools areequipped
with
a polarizedplug (onebladeiswider
than the other.) This plug will
fit
in
a polarized outlet only one way. If the
plug does not fit fully
in
the outlet, reverse the plug.
If
it
still does not fit,
contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet. Do not change
the plug
in
any way. Double insulation eliminates .the need for the three
wire grounded power cord and grounded power supply system.
Avoid body contactwith grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges
and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is
grounded.
Don't expose powertools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering
a
power
tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
Donotabuse the cord. Never use the cord tocarry the tools or pullthe plug
from anoutlet. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts.
Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase the risk of
electric shock.
Whenoperating a power tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord marked
"W-A" or "W." These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk
of electric shock.
Stay alert, watch what you are doing and usecommonsensewhenoperating
a power tool. Do not use tool while tired or under the influence of drugs,
alcohol, or medication.
A
moment of inattention while operating power tools
may result in serious personal injury.
Dressproperly. Do notwear loose clothing orjewelry. Contain long hair. Keep
your hair, clothing, andglovesaway from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry
or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

11. Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is off before plugging
in.
Carrying
tools with your finger on the switch or plugging intools that have the switch
on invites accidents.
12.
Remove adjusting keys or switches before turning the tool on. A wrench or
a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool may result in personal
in
j
ury.
13.
Do
notoverreach. Keep properfooting and balanceatalltimes. Proper footing
and balance enables better control
of
the tool in unexpected situations.
14.
Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Dust mask, non-skid
safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection must be used for appropriate
conditions.
15. Use clamps or other practical way to secure and support the workpiece to
a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body is unstable
and may lead to
loss
of control.
16.
Do
notforce tool. Usethe correct tool for your application. The correct tool
will do the job better and safer
at
the rate for which
it
is designed.
17.
Do
not use tool if switch does not turn
it
on or off. Any tool that cannot
be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
18.
Disconnect the plugfrom the power source before making any adjustments,
changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventive safety measures
reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally.
19. Store idle tools out
of
reach of children and other untrained persons.
Tools
are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
20. Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly
maintainedtools, with sharpcutting edges are less likelyto bind and are easier
to control.
21. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and
any other condition that may affect the tools operation. If damaged, have
the tool service beforeusing. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained
tools.
22. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your
model. Accessories that may be suitablefor one tool, may become hazardous
when used on another tool.
23.
Tool
service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Service
or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could result in a risk
of
injury.
24. When servicing atool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instruc-
tions
in
the Maintenance section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts
or failure tofollow MaintenanceInstructions may create a risk of electric shock
of injury.

Specific Safety Rules
1.
Holdtool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where
the cutting tools may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Contact with
a
"live" wire will make exposed metal parts
of
the tool "live" and shock the
operator.
Be sure no one is below when using the tool in high locations.
2.
Always be sure you have a firm footing.
3.
Hold the tool firmly.
4.
Keep hands away from rotating parts.
5.
Do
not leave the tool running. Operate the tool only when hand-held.
6.
Do
not touch the drill bit or the workpiece immediately after operation; they
may be extremely hot and could burn your skin.

Drillingoperation
*Drilling in wood
When drilling holes in the wood, use
a
wood drill with a guide screw. The guide screw
makes it bore naturally by itself,
so
you do not needto apply any pressure to the tool.
To prevent the bit from slipping when starting
a
hole, make an indentation with
a
center-
punch and hammer at the point to be drilled. Place the point of the bit in the indentation
and start drilling.
Use
a
cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are iron and brass which
should be drilled dry.
*Drilling in metal
CAUTION:
*Pressing excessively on the
tool
will not speed up the drilling. Infact, this excessive pres-
sure will only serve to damage the tip of your bit, decrease the tool performance and
shorten the service life of thetool.
*There is
a
tremendous force exerted on the tool/bit at the time of hole break through.
Holdthe tool firmly and exert care when the bit begins to break through the workpiece.
*Always grip the small workpiece firmly with avise or a holding means.
*A stuck bit can be removed simply by setting the reversing switch to reverse rotation in
order to back out. However, the tool will pull away easily unless you hold it firmly before
starting the tool.
MAINTENANCE
CAUTION:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and unplugged before attempting to perform
inspection or maintenance.
To maintain product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs, carbon brush inspection and
replacement, any other maintenance or adjustment should be performed by Makita
Authorized or Factory Service Centers, always using Makita replacement parts.
