tions
Make sure both doors are closed. If the door is opened during a bottle cycle, the
'Start' button will need to be pushed again to complete the interrupted cycle.
Turn power switch off and empty waste bin. Turn power back on to reboot.
Turn power switch off and fill oil tank with Intimus brand shredder oil. Turn power
back on to reboot.
Unit is jammed. Run in reverse and clear jam.
115 volt supply line is dead; check fuse or breaker panel. Resettable circuit breaker
located at the rear of the machine has tripped; press in to reset (see Fig. 5 on pg 3).

Bin full LED stays
on when the
waste bin is
empty
The bin full detector locat-
ed directly above waste
bin is stuck.
WARNING: Turn the power off and unplug the power cord. Remove the waste
bin and move bin full detector back and forth to make sure it pivots freely. When
released, the detector should hang in a vertical position. It must be in this position for
the shredder to operate (see Fig. 6 on pg 3).
Incomplete
shredding of vials Whole or partial vials/bot-
tles remain after cycle
completes.
Remove caps from bottles before shredding. If left on, the caps will tend to slow or
prevent shredding. Press 'Start' again to complete shredding.
Unit fails to stop
at end of bottle
cycle
Bottle pusher is jammed.
The pusher motor thermal
breaker will trip after
approximately 45 seconds.
WARNING: Turn the power off and unplug the power cord. Open the bottle door
to see if the pusher is free. CAUTION: The pusher is under significant spring
pressure. Clear out any debris which may have the pusher jammed in mid-cycle
(see Fig. 7 on pg 3). IMPORTANT: the pusher can be pulled upward but not
pushed downward. The thermal breaker on the pusher motor will automatically
reset when the shredder is powered off for 30 seconds.
Unit fails to stop
at end of paper
shredding
Sensor in paper slot is
dirty or blocked. WARNING: Turn the power off and unplug the power cord. Locate the paper
sensor at the middle of the paper slot and inspect for dirt or blockage. Clean or clear
the sensor. The unit should turn on when sensor is blocked and remain on for 5 sec-
onds after the sensor is unblocked.
Shredder makes
groaning or
squeaking noise
Shredded material is
trapped within the shred-
der head assembly.
Auto-oiling is non-function-
al. Unit was run in reverse
for too long and pump lost
its prime, creating an air-
lock. Once air locked, the
pump will not self-prime
through a wet wick.
Without feeding, alternately cycle the shredder forward and reverse for 10-15 sec-
onds each using the START & REVERSE buttons (the REVERSE button must be
held). Repeat several times to clear blades.
Check waste bin for signs of oil. If none is present, contact Martin Yale customer
service at (800)-225-5644 for assistance in clearing air-locked oil pump and cleaning
trapped debris from the head assembly if #1 above fails.
Unit stops during
shredding Shredder was overloaded
and electronically shut off. See Operating Instructions: Bottle & Vial Shredding. If this fails, contact
Martin Yale customer service at (800)-225-5644 for assistance.

Introduction
Thank you for selecting the Scriptstroyer Model UC5500 Under Counter Pharmacy Shredder. We
recommend that you familiarize yourself with the Scriptstroyer Model UC5500 by carefully reading
these instructions. Thorough understanding of the information contained within this instruction
manual will help to eliminate most operator-associated errors and ensure years of trouble-free per-
formance.
WARNING! Never connect power to the machine until you are ready to set up and operate the
shredder. During set up, operation, and maintenance keep hands, hair, loose clothing, and
jewelry away from all moving parts. Serious bodily injury could result. Service or disassem-
bly of the shredder should only be attempted with the power disconnected and locked out.

1.0 Nomenclature (Fig. 1)
2.0 Setting up the ScriptStroyer
Note: the ScriptStroyer is designed to operate with an automatic oiling system to
prevent premature wear and excess maintenance. This system requires the oil
tank to be filled prior to use as the machine will not function with an empty oil tank.
Filling the oil tank
A gallon of shredder oil, a funnel and trash bags are located inside the waste
bin. Remove the lid from the waste bin and its contents. Line the waste bin
with a trash bag, folding the bag snugly over the edge and sides of the bin.
Replace the bin and close the bin door. Remove the large white vented cap
located at the top rear of the machine and add the entire gallon of oil. Always
put the cap back on the tank to avoid debris from entering the oil supply.
Note: the cap is vented with a small hole to prevent a vacuum. Once the oil
tank is filled, do not tip the machine from its upright position as oil will seep
from this vent hole.
Starting up the ScriptStroyer (Fig. 2)
There are three switches and three indicating lights (LED) used to operate the shredder.
ON/OFF switch (I/O toggle) - main power; is also used to reboot the electronics.
START switch (push button) - starts the bottle shredding cycle.
REVERSE switch (push button) - reverses the shredding blades for de-jamming
and clearing debris.
Door open LED (red) - indicates bottle door or waste bin door is open or ajar.
When flashing out of sequence with amber LED - indicates shredder is jammed.
Oil/Bin full LED (amber) - flashing indicates low oil and steady-on indicates waste
bin is full. When flashing out of sequence with red LED - indicates shredder is
jammed.
Power on LED (green) - indicates power is on.
Plug the power cord into a 115 volt AC outlet. Turn the power switch to the "I" (ON) position. The red and amber LED
lights come on momentarily as the machine boots-up. When the oil tank is filled and both doors closed, the red and
amber lights go off after booting. The green LED stays on, indicating the machine is ready for use.
3.0 Operating the ScriptStroyer
The ScriptStroyer is designed to shred a variety of plastic prescription-style vials and bottles. The caps should be
removed before shredding, especially the larger diameters. Larger diameter vials and necked bottles should be dropped
in open end first. WARNING: Never put glass or metal into the shredder as serious damage to the blades and
components will occur. The machine is electronically controlled to stall when overloaded, so thick-walled plastic
containers such as large vitamin jars, juice bottles etc should be avoided.
Bottle & Vial Shredding (Fig. 3)
To shred bottles and vials, turn the power switch ON. Open the Bottle Door and
drop the bottle(s) and cap(s) into the chute. Close the Bottle Door and push the
"START" button. The machine will start the shredding cycle. During this cycle the
shredding blades will turn and a pushing arm will swing down inside the bottle
chute to assist and contain the plastic as it is shredding. If the material is shred-
ded within 15 seconds, the cycle will complete and the shredder will stop. If the
material does not completely shred in 15 seconds, the cycle will repeat again
before shutting off.
Depending upon the size, shape, quantity and type of plastic being shredded, there may be some partially shredded
material left in the chute and/or blades after the second cycle. This will usually be shredded the next time bottles or
paper are added but if it is too much, simply repeat the cycle by pressing the "START" button again.
Paper & Label Shredding (Fig. 4)
To shred paper and sheet labels, turn the power switch ON. Feed the paper into the
slot marked "PAPER ONLY". There is a sensor in the slot that detects the paper
and starts the shredding blades. The blades will continue to turn for approximately
5 seconds after the paper passes the sensor. The paper slot gap is wide enough to
feed up to 10 sheets of standard copy paper.
Smaller or wrinkled paper or labels that are difficult to feed in the paper slot can be rolled up and fed in the bottle chute.
Peeled labels with exposed adhesive should not be inserted as they will adhere to the machine. Stick them to a sheet of
paper first.
In the event too much material is fed into the shredder, the blades will "jam" and the blade motor will stall. The red and
yellow LED’s will blink out of sequence to indicate this. This is a safety feature to protect the machine from damage and
is normal. To un-jam, push and hold the "REVERSE" button for a few seconds to clear the jam. If there is paper in the
"PAPER ONLY" slot covering the sensor, the machine will automatically start forward again upon releasing the
"REVERSE" button. If not, push the "START" button to go forward. This procedure can be repeated until the jam is
cleared. If the jam is in the bottle chute, press the reverse button to clear the jam. The unit will continue running in
reverse automatically until the pusher reaches its uppermost position. CAUTION: Do not run the shredder in reverse
for more than 10-15 seconds at a time as the oil pump reverses also and may un-prime itself. See Trouble
Shooting if this occurs.
If the machine stops and the red light is on, check both waste bin door and bottle chute door to be sure they are closed
tightly. If the chute is filled with too many vials or too long of bottles are fed, the door may not close enough or the blades
will kick the material back against the door and shut the machine off.
4.0 Care and Maintenance
At some point, the amber bin full light will come on and the machine will not run. Open the waste bin door and pull the bin
out to check the contents. Due to the low profile of the machine, the bin fills up under the shredding blades first. Shake or
push the shreds back and reboot the machine. This can be done two or three times before it is necessary to empty the bin.
Eventually the amber oil light will flash on and off, indicating low oil level and the machine will not run. Keep oil on hand
to avoid shredding down-time. Refill the oil tank with Intimus Shredder Oil, up to one gallon and reboot the machine.
With the automatic oiling system, it is normal that the oil will drip from the blades during and after the shredding opera-
tion. When emptying the waste bin, oil and shreds will fall to the cabinet base. This should be wiped clean with cloth or
paper towels to prevent transferring to the bottom of the waste bin and floor. The lid of the waste bin can be used as a
tray to set the waste bin on to protect floors during cleaning.
When plastic is primarily shredded, the oil will settle to the bottom of the bin. If large amounts of paper are shredded,
most of the oil will be absorbed into the waste. Note: the lack of oil presence in the waste or little or no oil consump-
tion indicates the oil pump is air locked. See Trouble Shooting "Shredder makes groaning or squeaking noise".
Occasionally, it may become necessary to clear shredded material clinging to the bottom side of the shredder. WARN-
ING: Do not reach under the shredder head with bare hands as the teeth of the blades are sharp! Wear protec-
tive gloves and use a stiff brush, screwdriver or similar tool to clear the shredded material.
When large amounts of paper are shredded, a fine paper dust is generated and will eventually begin to show around the
openings. It may interfere with the photo sensors and should be wiped away with a soft cloth and mild surface cleaner.
