MclntoshLaboratoryhasearneda worldwidereputationforitstechnicalcontributionsto
improvedsoundreproduction.ThetechnicalinnovationsinMclntoshproductshaveintegrity
provenbytime.TheMclntosh"Classic"designisrecognizedasthemostoutstandinginthe
industry.
Mclntoshproductsaredesignedtobemaximumuserfriendlysoanyonecanenjoyusing
them.Theyarealsodesignedforeasymaintenance.ThelegendaryreliabilityofMclntosh
productshasbeena matterofrecordsince1949.
ThenewMclntoshMC7104,FourChannelPowerAmplifierwillproduce100wattsper
channelinto4 ohmspeakers.Eachpairofchannelscanbebridgedfor300wattsinto4 ohm
speakers.Thethreeavailableoutputconfigurationsinto4 ohmspeakersare,four100watt
channels,two100wattchannelsandone300 wattchannel,ortwo300wattchannels.
TheMC7104isidealforuseinhometheatersystems,multizonesystems,oranyapplication
thatrequiresfourdiscretepoweramplifierchannels.CombinetheMC7104witha stereopower
amplifierina HomeTheaterSystem.Usethestereoamplifierfortheleftandrightfrontspeakers.
UsetheMC7104witha bridgedchannelpairwith300wattsforthecenterchannelandthetwo
remaining100wattchannelsforthesurroundspeakers.
Arearpanel multi-roomconnectorallowstheMC7104tobeoperatedbya CR10orCR12
MultiZoneSystemtopowertworemoteaudiozones.A secondconnectorallowsa second
MC7104tobeaddedfortwoadditionalremoteaudiozones.
Bothbalancedandunbalancedinputs,individualchannellevelcontrolsandPowerControl
connectorsareprovided
Afrontpanel stackofLEDvolumelevelindicatorsisincludedforeachofthefourchannels
togetherwitha PowerGuardLEDatthetop.TherearealsotwoPOWERLED'stoindicatewhen
channelpairsareactive.TheMC7104includesmanyofthepopularandvaluableMclntosh
performancefeaturessuchasPowerGuard,SentryMonitorprotectionandthermalprotection.
TheMC7104frontpanel isthetraditionalMclntoshallglassdesignwithilluminated
nomenclature.

CONFIGURATIONS
INTRODUCTION

TheMC7104canbeplaceduprightona tableorshelf,standingonitsfourplasticfeet.Itcan
alsobeinstalledina MclntoshL84cabinet.Followtheinstallationinstructionsincludedwiththe
L84.
TheMC7104isdesignedtobeeasilyinstalledina cabinetofyourchoice.Thefrontmounting
panelcutout,mountingshelfventilationcutoutandamplifierdimensionsareshowninthe
diagramsfoundona pagefurtherbackinthismanual.
Alwaysprovideadequateventilationfortheamplifier.Thetroublefreelifeofanyelectronic
instrumentisgreatlyextendedbyprovidingsufficientventilationforpropercooling.Allowatleast
1-1/2inches(3.8cm)abovetheheatsinkareatoallowthefreeflowofair.Therecommended
minimumdepthformounting,includingclearanceforconnectors,is20inches(51cm)behind
thefrontmountingpanel.Clearancerequiredinfrontofthemountingpanelsurfaceis1 inch
(2.54cm).
Ina systemstack,thepoweramplifiershouldalwaysbeatthetop.Ifallthecomponentsare
installedina singlecabinet,a quietrunningventilationfancanbea definiteassetinmaintaining
allthesystemcomponentsattheircoolestpossibleoperatingtemperatures.
If the MC7104 is mounted in a custom cabinet, cut out a ventilation hole in the
amplifier mounting shelf according to the recommended dimensions.
Ontheuppersectionofthefrontpanelthereisa RedPOWERLEDindicatorforeachpairof
channels.Anindicatorturnsonwhenthespeakerrelaysforthatspecificpairofchannelsturn
on.Therelaysrespondtocontrolsignalssentfroma MclntoshControlCentertothePOWER
CONTROLIN,ora MclntoshMultizoneSystemfedtotheMULTI-ROOMINconnector.Ifthe
MULTI-ROOMINconnectorisnotbeingused,bothsetsofspeakerrelaysturnonsimultaneously
whenthemainpoweristurnedon.
Thereisa verticalrowofLEDpoweroutputindicatorsforeachofthefourchannels.There
arealsocalibrationindicationsforwattsoutputfrom0.01wattto100watts.Thiscalibrationin
wattsisvalidwhentheamplifierisfeeding4 ohmloads.Iftheamplifierisconnectedtospeakers
witha higherimpedance,theindicationsrefertopercentageofratedpoweroutput.
AllfourchannelsoftheMC7104incorporatetheMclntoshPOWERGUARDcircuitwhich
preventsoutputclippingwithitsharshanddamagingdistortion.A frontpanelLEDPowerGuard
indicatorisprovidedforeachofthefourchannels.TheLEDlightswheneverthePowerGuard
circuitisactivatedforanyparticularchannel.Thisindicatesthattheamplifierisproducingits
maximumundistortedpoweroutput,andthatyouarebeingprotectedfromoverdriveand
clipping.TheoutputlevelwherePowerGuardactswillbewellabovetheratedpowerdueto
conservativeMclntoshdesignphilosophy.
(If the POWER GUARD indicators turn on and stay on continuously for any given pair of
channels, it indicates a problem is present. If this condition occurs, contact your Mclntosh dealer
for assistance.)

Usehighqualityinputandoutputconnectingcables.Propercableswillinsurereceivingthe
bestpossibleperformancefromyourMclntoshsystem.YourMclntoshdealercanadviseyou
onthetypesandlengthsofcablesthatwillworkbestinyourinstallation.
Hookupdrawingsareincludedwhichgivegraphicinformationonhowtoconnecttheinputs
andoutputsforeachinstallationconfiguration.Payspecialattentiontothepolaritiesofthe
speakerhookups.
Refer to the numbers on the rear panel drawing for the descriptions of the MC7104
connections and controls.
1.MULTI-ROOM,(IN- OUT)
ConnectanoptionalcablewithDINconnectorsoneachend,(MclntoshPartNo.(170-147)
fromtheMULTI-ROOM,INconnectortoa MclntoshCR10orCR12RemoteControlSystem.
WhenZone1 isselectedontheRemoteControlSystem,signalsaresenttotheMC7104that
turnsonthespeakerrelaysforchannels1 and2.WhenZone2 isselected,thespeakerrelays
forchannels3 and4 areturnedon.Thisallowsa singleMC7104tosupplyaudiopowerto
remotezones1 and2.
Adda secondMC7104amplifiertosupplypowertotwoadditionalremotezones.Connectanother
DINcablefromthefirstMC7104,MULTI- ROOMOUTconnectortotheMULTI- ROOMINconnector
onthesecondMC7104.WhenZone3 isselected,speakerrelaysforchannels1 and2 ofthesecond
amplifierareturnedon.WhenZone4 isselected,channels3 and4 areselected.Thesecond
MC7104canthenbeusedtosupplyaudiopowertoremotezones3 and4.
When the MULTI-ROOM connections are used on the MC7104, only the AC Power and
Speaker Control Relays are activated. Separate audio cables must be connected from the
Remote Control System to feed audio to the MC7104.

TheMC7104ACpowercanbeturnedonandoffbya controlsignalfedtothePOWER
CONTROLINconnectorfromthePOWERCONTROLOUTconnectoroncompatibleMclntosh
products.TheMC7104POWERCONTROLOUTjackwillfeedthesameACpowercontrolsignal
out,delayed0.2seconds,toturnonandoffanotherpoweramplifieroraccessorycomponent
witha compatiblePowerControlinput.
TheMC7104POWERswitchmustbeintheOFF/REMOTEsettingforthepowercontrolsignals
toturntheMC7108OnandOff.
The POWER CONTROL connectors are standard 1/8 inch mini phone plugs. Only the tip (+)
and sleeve (-) are used for connecting the plugs to a single conductor shielded cable.

BALANCED CABLES
Use 2 conductor shielded cables with XLR type connectors for balanced connections. The
MC7104 BALANCED INPUTS use Female XLR connectors installed on the amplifier back panel.
The balanced connecting cable requires a Male XLR connector.

Pin configuration for the XLR BALANCED INPUT connectors on the MC7104.
PIN 1: Shield or ground.
PIN 2: + input.
PIN 3:-input.
In stereo installations where the amplifier and accessory component are close to each other
and require interconnecting cables of six feet or less, using quality unbalanced connecting
cables is usually satisfactory. If the units are farther apart and require longer interconnecting
cables, using balanced cables will give extra protection from noise or interference.
