Getting Acquainted
Getting Acquainted
is chapter helps you get acquainted with the Xstreamjet by describing its main com-
ponents. Important safety information is provided, as well as tips for general printer
use. e Xstreamjet’s specications are also included.
Xstreamjet Components
e Xstreamjet is easy to operate and maintain. e gures below depicts its main
external features.
e primary internal features include the print head and the cartridge bin as shown
below.
Status LED / Tray Control
e status LED glows continuously to indicate that the printer has power. Error con-
ditions are indicated by a series of ashing patterns. (See the Troubleshooting chapter
for more information.)
In addition, this button provides a way to manually operate the disc try. Press the but-
ton to extend (open) the tray; press it again to retract (close) the tray. (Note: during
normal operation, the tray is extended and retracted by soware commands.)

Disc Tray Opening
A mechanical tray that holds the disc to be printed extends and rejects through the
disc tray opening.
Waste Ink Level Indicator
e Xstreamjet uses two high-capacity waste ink reservoirs to store ink used during
print head nozzle cleaning operations. e reservoirs are serviceable by the end-user
and should be emptied regularly to avoid overlling.
e waste ink level indicator displays the current level of waste ink in the reservoirs.
Vent
A slotted vent in the rear of the unit provides air ow to the device internals. Do not
block the vent by placing the Xstreamjet ush against a vertical surface such as a wall
or partition.
Cable Connectors
Cables that connect the printer to its host are attached to the rear of the printer. Note
that separate jacks are provided for printer control (mini-din style connector) and user
data (USB 2.0 style connector).
Power Switch
A switch that controls power to the printer is found at the rear of the unit.
AC Power Input
e AC power input is a receptacle for a standard grounded 120 AC power cord.
Cartridge Bin
An array of (6) inkjet cartridges supply ink to the Xstreamjet. e cartridges are
stored in a special holder under the front cover.
Print Head
e print head consists of an array of ink nozzles that apply the ink to the media
surface. Periodic cleaning of the nozzles is a standard user maintenance activity and
ensures proper operation over the printer’s full duty cycle.
The Xstreamjet differs from other
printers in that cleaning the print
head generates waste ink that must
be emptied.
Empty the waste ink containers
periodically to ensure proper
operation of your Xstreamjet.
Waste Ink Removal
The Xstreamjet may also be used
with Microtech’s Continuous Ink
System (CIS).

Safety Information
Power and Electrical Precautions
Use only the type of power source indicated on the printer’s label.•
Use only the power cord that comes with this product. Use of another•
cord may result in re or electric shock.
is product’s power cord is for use with this product only. Use with•
other equipment may result in re or electric shock.
Be sure the power cord meets the applicable local safety standards.•
Avoid using electrical outlets on the same circuit as devices that regularly•
switch on and o such as photocopiers or air control systems.
Avoid using electrical outlets controlled by wall switches or automatic•
timers.
Keep the entire computer system away from potential sources of electro-•
magnetic interference, such as loudspeakers or the base units of cordless
telephones.
Do not use a damaged or frayed power cord.•
If an extension cord is used with the printer, ensure that the total ampere•
rating of the devices plugged into the extension cord does not exceed
the cord’s ampere rating. Also, ensure that the total ampere rating of
all devices plugged into the wall outlet does not exceed the wall outlet’s
ampere rating.
Unplug the printer and refer servicing to qualied service personnel•
under the following conditions:
e power cord or plug is damaged•
Liquid has entered the printer•
e printer has been dropped or the casing damaged•
e printer does not operate normally or exhibits a distinct change in•
performance.
For printers used in Germany, the building installation must be protected•
by a 10 or 16 amp circuit breaker to provide adequate short-circuit pro-
tection and over-current protection for this printer.
Positioning Precautions
Do not block or cover the vents and openings in the printer.•
Place the printer on a at, stable surface that extends beyond the base•
of the printer in all directions. If the printer is near to a wall, leave more

- 6 -
Microtech Systems
than 10 cm clearance between the back of the printer and the wall. e
printer will not operate properly if it is tilted or placed at an angle.
When storing or transporting the printer, do not tilt it, stand it on•
its side, or turn it upside down. Otherwise, ink may leak from the
cartridges.
Leave sucient front clearance for the tray to be fully ejected.•
Avoid places subject to rapid changes in temperature and humidity.•
Additionally, keep the printer away from direct sunlight, strong light, or
heat sources.
Avoid locations subject to dust, shock, or vibration.•
Leave sucient clearance around the printer to allow for adequate•
ventilation.
Place the printer near a wall outlet so that the power cord can be easily•
unplugged.
General Use Precautions
Do not leave the printer lid open. Close it aer changing ink cartridges.•
Do not insert objects through the slots in the printer.•
Take care not to spill liquid on the printer.•
Do not put your hand inside the printer or touch the ink cartridges•
during printing.
Do not move the print head by hand; doing so may result in damage to•
the printer.
Always wait for the print head to come to rest for at least ve (5) minutes•
before powering down the printer.
Before transporting the printer, make sure that the print head is in the•
home (far right) position and the ink cartridges are in place.
Leave the ink cartridges installed. Removing the cartridges can dry out•
the print head and may prevent the printer from printing.
Precautions For Handling Ink Cartridges
Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children. Do not allow children to•
drink from or otherwise handle the cartridges.
Do not shake the ink cartridges; this can cause leakage.•
Use care when handling used ink cartridges, as there may be some ink•
remaining around the ink supply port. If ink contacts your skin, wash the
area thoroughly with soap and water. If ink enters your eyes, ush them

- 7 -

immediately with water. If discomfort or vision problems continue aer a
thorough ushing, see a doctor immediately.
Do not remove or tear the label on the cartridge; this can cause leakage.•
Install ink cartridges immediately aer removing from packaging. Leav-•
ing a cartridge unpacked for a long time before use may impede printing.
For best results, use ink cartridges within six months of installing them.•
Do not dismantle the ink cartridges or try to rell them as damage to the•
print head may result.
Aer storing cartridges in a cold place, allow them to sit at room tem-•
perature for at least three hours before use.
Store ink cartridges in a cool, dark place.•
Store cartridges so that the bottom of the packaging faces down.•
Do not touch the green IC chip on the back of the cartridge. Doing so•
may prevent normal operation and printing.
e IC chip retains a variety of cartridge-related information, such as the•
amount of ink remaining. e cartridge may be removed and reinstalled
freely. However, each time the cartridge is inserted, some ink is con-
sumed because the printer automatically performs a reliability check.
When removing a cartridge for later use, protect its ink supply area from•
dirt and dust and store it in the same environment as the printer. A valve
in the ink supply port makes covers or plugs unnecessary, but the ink
may stain items that come into contact with this area of the cartridge. Do
not touch the ink supply port or the surrounding area.
