from Mitsubishi. In addition to a wide range of functions and convincing picture and sound technology, this appliance
also offers the new ‘1-2-3 MENU’ function, which enables you a trouble-free operation by using number buttons on
the remote control.
We wish you much enjoyment with your new Mitsubishi HS-721V(B) or HS-740V(B).

When you use this guide, unfold the flap pages so that you will gain an overview of the component parts.
This guide is arranged as follows:
Chapter | explains how to connect up the VCR and prepare it for use. Chapter Ii provides an overview of all the tape

further facilities your VCR possesses. In the event of any problems and faults please refer to Chapter VI before
contacting your service department.

contains a short description of the remote control, the on screen menus and an explanation of the buttons and
displays (see flap pages).

Installation and connection
Before setting up, make sure that the iano items are at ra 1. remote control, 2. satarioe! 3. coaxial
cable, 4. guarantee card and an envelope, 5. quick set-up guide. If there are any items missing, contact your
dealer. Dispose of the accessory bag safely.
Safe use of this VCR
Before you choose a place for your VCR, please note the following:
Never allow this appliance to be exposed to rain or moisture
SS (danger of shorting and electric shock), or in a workshop
(problem of dust, vibration or magnetic disturbance). Keep the VCR away
from heat sources (radiators or direct sunlight) and air conditioning
equipment.
SS Do net obstruct the air vents by covering the VCR. Do not
install the VCR in a confined space. If you are installing the
VCR into a bookcase or built in cabinet make sure there is sufficient air
circulation. Overheating will cause damage and shorten the life of this
VCR. Place on a solid, vibration free surface.
Avoid large variations in temperature and dampness. Con-
densation may ruin the tapes and tape transport. Should the
i)
VCR be subject to a wide temperature change on installation, switch the
VCR to ON but do not operate the VCR for about two hours. The VCR will
gradually warm up, and disperse any condensation.
Do not place heavy objects such as a television on top of the
VCR. The casing may become warped. Do not touch the
>
inside of the VCR or insert any foreign objects of any kind. Foreign bodies
can damage the VCR considerably.
Never place containers of liquid on the VCR (e.g. vases of
>
flowers or drinks). Liquid spillage can lead to fire, electric
shock or shorting.
Please ensure that all electrical connections (including the
mains plug, extension leads and interconnections between
>
pieces of equipment) are in accordance with the manufacturer's instruc-
tions. Always withdraw the mains plug when making or changing
connections.
A damaged mains lead is a potential fire or shock hazard.
When unplugging your VCR, pull it out of the socket by
>
means of the plug (not the lead). Ensure the lead is notin contact with the
appliance surface for long periods. When going away for a long period of
time always disconnect the VCR from the mains and remove the aerial
lead.
Bey
When you finish operating your VCR always unload the cas-
sette and tum off the VCR’s POWER. Remember the VCR
will still be connected to the mains voltage when the POWER is turned off.
Wipe the VCR with a soft, dry, clean cloth or a clean cloth
slightly moistened with a mild detergent. If you are ever in
doubt about the installation, operation or safety of your equipment, contact
your dealer.
If you are in any doubt about the VCR working normally, or
[>
if it is Gamaged in any way - switch off, withdraw the mains
plug and consult your dealer. Never remove any fixed cover as this may
expose dangerous voltages.
Do not leave equipment switched on when it is unattended
[>
unless it is specifically stated that it is designed for unatten-
ded operation or has a stand-by mode. For switching the equipment off,
special arrangements may need to be made for infirm or handicapped
people.
Mains lead connection
The mains lead on this VCR is fitted with a non-rewireale
[>
mains plug, incorporating a 3A fuse. If you need to replace the fuse, is@
a 3A fuse approved by BS! or ASTA to BS 1362, ensuring you refit the fise
cover. If the mains plug is not suitable for the sockets in your home, ind
you require to remove the plug, remove the fuse, cut off the plug tem
dispose of the plug immediately, to avoid a possible electric shock hazird.
To refit a new plug, follow the instructions below:
Blue: Neutral, Brown: Live
As the colours in the mains jead of this VCR may not correspond withhe
coloured markings identifying the terminats in your plug, proceedas
follows. The wire which is coloured Blue must be connected to the termnaal
which is marked with the letter N or coloured Black. The wire whic is
coloured Brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with
the letter L or coloured Red. Do not connect either wire to the termnaal
which is marked with the letter Eorthe earthsymbol orcoloured Ghe mn
or Green and Yellow.

2 Gcnnectina the VCR to an aerial, mains and 1V
When you have chosen a suitable place, proceed as follows:
If your TV or monitor has a Scart
connection, you can connect a Scart lead
to the VCR Scart socket. This will result in
1. Plug in the aerial lead to the RF IN socket on the Tip:
VCR and connect the coaxial cable (supplied) from
the RF OUT socket on the VCR to the aerial socket
onthe TV. an improved picture quality. (To obtain a
Scart cable, contact your dealer.)

% Connecting the VCR to other appliances (if required)
By selecting an external channel L1 or L2, you can utilise the Euro AV scart sockets on the rear of this
VCR. For example, L1 selects the EURO AV1 IN/OUT socket and L2 selects the EURO AV2 IN socket.
If you wish, you can connect other appliances such as SP To select an external channel (L1 or L2),
a Camcorder or a Satellite receiver to your VCR. To do press the JOG Hl button on the remote control.
this you will need a cable with at least one Scart plug.
The plug at the other end of the cable will plug into the
external appliance. As the VCR has two Scart sockets,
it can be connected to two or more appliances simul-
taneously (e.g. Satellite receiver and TV).
The external channels are linked to the
following EURO AV connectors:
L1 = EURO AV1 IN/OUT scart socket
L2 = EURO AV2 IN scart socket

Place the batteries in the remote control. Observe the
polarities (see diagram on the right). If you have a
Mitsubishi TV, you can also control the most important
TV functions with the same remote control. Please
regard the remote control as the command HQ of
your VCR.
aS The operating distance for the remote control
is up to 7 metres.
Dispose of any old batteries carefully. Do not
heat, disassemble or throw them in a fire.
Make sure they do not fall into the hands of children.
They are highly toxic!
% Setting up the video channel on the TV

The batteries should always be changed as
a pair.
Make sure that there are no obstructions be-
s tween you and the VCR i.e. a video cassette
placed in front of the remote control sensor.
A free channel must be kept on your TV for watching recordings. Tune in the video channel as follows:
Tip:
if you are using a Scart cable, you can ignore the following settings. Select the
AV or EXT channel on your TV and set the RF OUT channel to “--” on the fluorescent
display. This can be achieved by following steps 5 and 6.
1. Turn onthe vcR by using the POWER button on
the remote control.
2. Turn on the TV.
3. Press the MENU button on the remote control.
4. Choose a free channel on the TV and tune it to
UHF channel 68. Follow the instructions for the
TV. The VCR has been set to UHF channel 68.
The VCR MENU should appear on the screen.
=> Should the video channel encounter interfer-
ence from another source, or infringes upon
another channel, this will be apparent through snow,
colour distortion or blurred print in the menu. Inthis case,
it must be fine adjusted. Proceed as follows:
5. Confirm that the VCR is in standby mode. Press
the O.K.PROG. button on the VCR and the CHAN-
NEL “ or \’ buttons at the same time. Two ver-
tical white lines (test signal) should now appear on
the TV screen. (Channel 68 will be shown on the
fluorescent display.)
6. Keep the O.K.PROG. button depressed and simul-
taneously press the CHANNEL “ or V buttonsto
select another channel! within the range of 22 - (9.
(‘--” willappear after channel 69.) Press the POWER
button.
re Repeat steps 1 and 3 and select the appropriate
channel number on the TV, i.e. the same numer
selected on the VCR in step 6.

A. Automatic channel set-up
This VCR is equipped with a function which will auto-
matically tune in, name some of your stations and also
set the clock to the correct time and date. To do so,
proceed as follows:
1. Press the AUTO SET-UP button which is on the
front of your VCR, by using a suitable implement.

2. The VCRwill scan until all stations are detected. If
a station of poor signal! can only be detected, the
VCR will continue scanning until it receives a better
signal.
When the VCR has found all the stations it
willname them i.e. CH1 - BBC1, CH2 - BBC2,
CHS - ITV, CH4 - CH4, CH5 - CH5. Any weak signal
stations will be tuned from CH6 upwards.

If the letters “At” are flashing on the fluores-
cent display, your VCR is tuning in your
@
stations, when this stops flashing, tuning and clock set-
ting has been completed.
Everyday at 11:15 a.m., the VCR will set the
clock and date, only if the VCR is in standby
(J
mode.
If the reception signal is weak, noisy or lack-
ing in a text signal or there is interference by
@
Stray signals, the auto set-up function may not work
correctly.
B. Rearranging your stations
After you have used the AUTO SET-UP function, you
may find that you are not satisfied with the positioning
of the stations. To change the station positioning, pro-
ceed as follows:
1 . Press the MENU button and choose CHANNEL
SET-UP by pressing the SHUTTLE G3 button.
By pressing the DATA ON SCREEN button,
SS the TV picture will be overlaid with the CHAN-
NEL SET-UP display.
2.
When the cursor is flashing, select the channel line
you wish to alter by using the JOG & or & buttons.
Press the SHUTTLE G3 button. The channel num-
ber will begin to flash.

If you wish to alter other channels, press the SHUTTLE
[3 button twice and repeat steps 2 to 4.

C. Fine tuning stations (AFT)
This VCR is equipped with Automatic Fine Tuning (AFT),
which normally provides the best possible reception
quality. If a station is weak, manual fine tuning may be
necessary. Proceed as follows:
1. Press the MENU button and choose CHANNEL
SET-UP by pressing the SHUTTLE G3 button.
2. Select the channel to be fine tuned by pressing the
JOG & or & buttons.
3. Now press the SHUTTLE 0 button.
4. Press the number 2 button and then press the
number 1 button to switch the AFT to OFF.

A bar will appear which shows the current position of
the frequency band. Confirm that the AFT is OFF.
5. Youcan fine tune the channel by using the FF and
REW buttons.
6. if you wish to fine tune further channels, repeat
steps 2 to 5. To exit press the MENU button.
Stations not already stored in the VCR can be
tuned in and stored, without having to go
through the ‘Auto set-up’ function again. In step 4, press
the number 2 button and ensure that the AFT is set to
ON. If itis set to OFF, press the number 1 button. The
following display should appear.

SS You can now search for a station not already
stored by using the FF or REW buttons.

D. Skipping vacant channels
Up to 60 channels can be stored in your VCR. If not all
channels are in use (i.e. noisy or weak stations) these
can be skipped so that they are not selected by using the
JOG & or & buttons.
Proceed as follows:
1 . Press the MENU button and choose CHANNEL
SET-UP by pressing the SHUTTLE G3 button.
2. Select the channel to be skipped by pressing the
JOG & or & keys, e.g. 11 and press the SHUTTLE
[3 button.
3. Press the number 1 button. (Asmall “s” will appear
next to the channel you wish to skip.)

If you change from channel to channel by using the JOG

number 11 is missing (skipped).

E. Naming your channels
Up to four characters can be used to identify any pre-
set channel. To do this, proceed as follows:
1 » Press the MENU button and choose CHANNEL
SET-UP by pressing the SHUTTLE G3 button.

or HJ buttons. Press the SHUTTLE G3 button to
move to the next character and change it by pressing

5: Repeat step 4 to set the rest of the characters. (A
maximum of 4 characters can be entered for each
station name.)
6. After you have entered the channel name, press
the SHUTTLE & button.
7. Repeat steps 2 to 6 for naming other channels.
8. Press the MENU button to quit from this function.
To cancel the name, follow step 2 and press

Installation and connection
% Changing the clock and date
The clock will be automatically set after the AUTO SET-
UP function is utilised. This procedure is for manually
changing the VCR’s time and date. The correct time on
the VCR's clock isnecessary for programmed recordings.
Proceed as follows:
1 » Turn onthe VCR and turn to the video channel on
your TV.
2. Press the MENU key. (The VCR MENU appears
onthe TV screen.)
3. Use the JOG & or & buttons to select the CLOCK
SET menu. Press the SHUTTLE 3 button.
4. Use the JOG Ei or HI buttons, to select the TIME.
To enter your selections, press the SHUTTLE a
button.

5. The CLOCK SET CHANNEL position starts flash-

To correct errors or to make changes, repeat
SS steps 2 - 6.
To be able to view the clock after you have

The CLOCK SET CHANNEL is factory preset to channel
1. This is necessary for the VCR to automatically reset
the clock to the correct time and date everyday (see page
7). If you wish to change the CLOCK SET CHANNEL
setting, proceed as follows:
1. Press the MENU button and select CLOCK SET by
pressing the JOG & orf and then the SHUTTLE
button.
2. Use the JOG & or & buttons to select another
channel.
3. Press the MENU button to quit from this function.
If the reception signal is weak, the VCR may
SS reset the clock incorrectly. In this case, set the
CLOCK SET CHANNEL to “--”.. This will prevent the
clock from being reset.
Due to signal conditions you may wish to
change the CLOCK SET CHANNEL to another
station, or you may wish to turn off this feature in
exceptional cases.

Treat the video cassettes with care. Do not

loudspeakers), as the recording may be damaged.
Protect from dust and the sun.
SS Youcan protect recordings from being acciden-
tally erased by breaking off the anti-erase
(protective) tab.

SS Your VCR has a built in head cleaner that will
automatically clean the recording/playback
heads when a tape is inserted. It may happen after ex-
tensive use, that the heads need to be cleaned manually.
In such a case, contact your dealer.
A comprehensive guide to recording is to be found in the chapter ‘Recording’. Here we will limit ourselves
to describe the simplest and quickest methods. Proceed as follows:
1. Selectthe video channelon your TV so that you can
watch the programme being recorded.
2. Insert a cassette. The screen will show briefly the
message “CASSETTE IN”.
Make sure the anti-erase (protective) tab has
—s not been broken off, otherwise the VCR will
Start playback.
3. Onthe VCR choose the channel you want to record
by using the number keys or the JOG & or & but-
tons.
Press the REC button.
5. End the recording by pressing the PLAY/STOP
button.
You can stop and start the recording atany
time by using the PAUSE button (e.g. curing
commercial breaks).
Note that after five minutes on record pause mode, the
VCR will stop recording. This avoids possible damage
to the tape.
You can also select channels with the numeric
SS keys. If you choose a two digit channel, you
must first press the -/-- key.

Rewind the tape with the REW button. Now press the PLAY/STOP button. You can stop the tape at any time with
the PLAY/STOP button and remove the tape by pressing the EJECT button. This VCR has a quick start function
which allows you to begin playback mode within 0.3 seconds, providing that the VCR has been in use within the last

You can alter the playing speed by activating the SHUT-

There will be no colour during frame advance,

During still picture, the FF and REW buttons
on the VCR, operate the same as the SHUT-
TLE buttons on the remote control. Pressing the FF
button is the same as pressing the SHUTTLE G3 button
and pressing the REW button is the same as pressing the
SHUTTLE & button.

# Still pictures
If you press the PAUSE button during playback, you will
obtain a still picture. If the picture has a jitter you can
correctitby pressing the CHANNEL “\ or V buttons on
the VCR one at a time until the jittering improves.

= Frame advance
In still mode, repeated pressing of the JOG & or & but-
tons allows frame to frame movement.
If not in play or record mode, the JOG & or
SS buttons are also forchannel selecting. Further-
more, the JOG & or & and SHUTTLE & or 3 buttons
are used for your personal programming of the on screen
menus.
After 5 minutes in still and slow motion play:
SS back, the VCR will go into stop mode to
prevent damage to the tape.
= Fast forwarding and rewinding
When in stop mode, you can press the FF or REW
buttons to fast forward or rewind the tape with no picture.
If, while playing a tape and you press the FF
or REW button, the VCR will go into search
mode. For high speed search, press and hold the FF o
REW button for about 1 second before releasing, this
only applies toLP recordings. Pressing the button again,
or the PLAY/STOP button, resumes playback.
= Automatic rewind mechanism
When the end of the tape is reached in record, playback
fast forward or forward search modes, it is automatically
rewound. When the tape runs out during recording using
the 1-2-3 MENU or one touch recording the tape stop;
and the VCR goes into standby mode. When the tape
runs out in index search the tape stops.
During picture search the sound is muted.
Depending on tapes and the types of TV set
used, the picture may roll up and down, noise may bs
present and the colour may disappear.

Basic functions
SP The horizontal noise bars which appear during
fast playback, slow motion playback and
reverse playback can be adjusted horizontally. To do
this, press the CHANNEL /\ or \ buttons on the VCR
or the JOG & or & buttons one at a time.
% Colour coordinated displays and
buttons
Forcontrolling the on screen menus, the remotecontrol’s
buttons and the menus are equivalently coloured. The
hints in the menus are shown in a colour which is the
same colour as the buttons you must use. The colours
that are used are as follows:
GREEN = VCR MENU/Settings
BLUE = VIDEO Plus+ programming
MAGENTA = One key programming
=< 4-2-3 MENU operation
Using the 1-2-3 MENU you can easily do the basic VCR
operations such as playback, recording and programmed
recording. The interactive guide is displayed on the TV
screen.
= Playback using the 1-2-3 MENU
1. Turn on the VCR by using the POWER button on
the remote control.
2. Turn on the TV and select the video channel.
2 Press the 1-2-3 MENU button. (A message may
appear on the TV screen indicating that a cassette
should be inserted at this point.)
4 . Insertapre-recordedtape. Once the tape has been
inserted, the 1-2-3 MENU display will appear on the
TV screen.

the fluorescent display. (The VCR will now go into
Standby mode for recording.)
SP The DAILY/WEEKLY button cannot be used
with this function, but you can programme for
Weekly or Monday to Friday recordings on the programme
list display. After entering your PlusCode number, press
the VIDEO Plus+ button and then press the SHUTTLE
&D button to move the flashing to the “DAY” setting and
press the JOG Hi or Hl buttons to display [E -] or [MO-FR].
B. If you have no VIDEO Plus+ number
4. Press the O.K.PROG. button to display the pro-
gramming menu.
Enter your programming data by using the O.K.-
PROG. button when the cursor flashes at the selec-
teditem. Release the O.K.PROG. button when you
have completed entering your data and the cursor
will move to the next item after 4 seconds.
6. when you have completed entering all your data,
set “CONFIRM” to “YES” and the VCR will auto-
matically switch to standby mode for recording.
SP If the VCR is not in stop mode, the 1-2-3
MENU will not appear.

Recording
= Tape speed
In all recording modes you have the choice of either
Standard Play (SP) or Long Play (LP). LP means half
speed and allows you to record for up to 8 hours on a four
hour cassette (E-240). Using LP recordings may slightly
reduce your picture quality. Select LP or SP by pressing
the SP/LP button.
= Automatic recording speed (AT)
This function records in SP mode, unless there is
insufficient tape.
The recording will start in SP mode and the VCR will
automatically switch to LP when the tape begins to run
out.
Ensure that the TAPE LENGTH is set to the appropriate
position (see page 20) according to the tape being used.
Instead of selecting SP or LP on the programminglist, set
the tape speed to AT.
To ensure the programme has recorded completely, we
recommend you extend the end time of the recording.
TheAT function is only available for one programme line
at any time.
AT function is not available in OTR or PDC programming
modes.
& Recording one programme whilst
watching another
If you want to watch one programme on the TV whilst
recording another, select the channel you want to watch
by pressing the appropriate channel button on your TV.
On the VCR, select the channel you wish to record and
start recording by pressing the REC button. To check
the recording programme, select the video channel on
your TV.
= PDC programming
PDC is a Programme Delivery Control system. TV
stations which use this system, transmit PDC codes with
each programme. Instead of the VCR following the in-
structions you have entered for recording a programme
The
programming
menu
of
the
721V(B)
or
740V(B)
allows
you
to
record
up
to
8
programmes
in
the
course
i.e. channel, date, start time and end time, by selecting
PDC, the VCR will look for signals which are transmitted
with the programme when it is broadcast. When using
the PDC function you can ensure that a recording will be
completed even if it is broadcast earlier or later than
planned or if it lasts longer than originally announced
(i.e. football match going into extra time).
PDC:
SSP lf there is an overlap in the transmission
because of delays, the PDC controlled recordings take
priority. !f two PDC programmes overlap the VCR will
record the programme which started first.
It may happen, thatthe VCR does not recognise the PDC
signals as they may be too weak, or the signal was not
sent by the transmitter. In such a case, the VCR willstart
and finish at the times you programmed into the VCR. If
while recording, the VCR receives and evaluates the
PDC code, the VCR will switch over to recording in PDC
mode, ensuring that the whole programme is recorded.
The VCR enters PDC standby at 8 pm on the day before
the programmed recording.

grammed recording was due to be broadcast. While the
VCR is on standby for PDC recording, it cannot be used
in any other modes. To be able to use the VCR, press
the POWER button. This will not erase any PDC pro-
grammes.
The PDC mode is indicated on the programme list
display with a small “p”. If the transmission has no PDC
facility you must select ‘t” for timer (normal recording).
In this case, the VCR will follow the time you have
programmed only.
SS Record pause mode will not function during
PDC recording.

REC Recording

The PDC system may not be available on all
your TV stations. Only some stations may
transmit PDC codes along with the programmes. If you
find that your VCR has stopped recording before the
actual end of the programme, this may be due to the
broadcasting station not transmitting PDC codes.
= Regular recording
inalltimer modes you can record programmes which are
broadcast regularly everyday (MO-FR) or every week.
This facility is not limited to one month.
& External appliances
If you wish to record from an external source, select the
channel L1 or L2 on the VCR's fluorescent display and
then press the REC button.
= Programming 8 transmissions
If you have already chosen six programmes on the
programme list display, the instructions in the lower
half of the menu will be replaced by lines 7 and 8.
Setting the clock:
SS For all programmed recordings, i.e. everything
except recording by using the REC button, the clock
must be set.
If two TV programmes overlap in timer mode,
SS
recording
will
begin
at

earlier
start
time
and willthen switch to the programme with the later start
time.
= Record button (REC)
You can start recording without pre-programming by
using the REC button. The recording speed can be
changed by pressing the SP/LP button (see page 15).
% One touch recording (REC/OTR)
You canalso record by using the REC/OTR button. The
REC/OTR function is a quick and simple way to record
programmes while only having to specify a length of
time required for the recording. To use this function,
proceed as follows:

1. Load your cassette and select the channel you
wish to record. Remember to select the desired
tape speed.
2. Press the REC/OTR button. Recording will now
begin. Each further press of the REC/OTR will in-
crease the recording time by 15 minutes. This is
shown on the fluorescent display of the VCR. You
can record up to four hours or until the end of the
tape by using this function. You can interrupt the
recording with the PAUSE button or stop the record-
ing with the PLAY/STOP button.
You can change the recording time during
SS recording, by repeatedly pressing the REC/
OTR button.

= One key programming (O.K.PROG.)
By using the O.K.PROG. button you can easily set the
timer with only one button.
One press of the O.K.PROG. button gives you the
programme list display. Wait until two dashes (--) flast
under “CH”. Keep pressing the O.K.PROG. button uniil
the channel number you want is shown. Wait about four
seconds. After that the dashes below “DAY” will flash.
Again press the O.K.PROG. button until the day you
wantis shown. Wait another four seconds and enter the
start time and finish time of the recording. At the end of
the programme line it will have “pSP”. The “p” indicates
PDC programming. The “SP” indicates standard play-
