How to Use How to Use
WARNING: Use personal protective equipment as needed (safety goggles,
dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, heavy duty work
gloves or hearing protection) to reduce personal injuries.
BATTERY PACK
Before using the battery pack, please read all instructions and cautionary
markings on the battery pack and charger.
• DO NOT carry the battery pack in an apron, pocket, or tool box with loose
metal objects (paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws, etc.). Battery pack
terminals could be short-circuited, causing damage to the battery pack, severe
burns or fire.
• The battery pack is nickel-cadmium and is considered to be a toxic material by
the Environmental Protection Agency. Before disposing of damaged or worn
out battery packs, check with your state Environmental Protection Agency to
find out about special restrictions on the disposal of these battery packs. DO
NOT incinerate a battery pack even if it is severely damaged or is completely
worn out (the battery pack can explode).
• Before first use, the battery pack requires 8–10 hours of charge time to be
fully charged. Subsequent recharging needs 3-5 hours for the battery to be
fully charged. See page 7.
• Switch to a fresh battery when tool performance begins to diminish. Severe
heat is destructive to a battery; the more heat generated, the faster the
battery loses power. A battery that gets too hot can have a shortened life.
• Charge the battery at ambient temperatures between 50° F -104° F. Store
tool and battery pack in locations where temperatures will not exceed 120° F.
Excessive heat may cause serious damage to the battery cells.
• Recharge this battery ONLY with the supplied charger. Use this battery ONLY
with this Montgomery Ward cordless drill.
• If damaged, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. Liquid
ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns. If contact occurs, flush
with water. If liquid contacts eyes, seek medical help.
WARNING: DO NOT pick up or carry the drill with your finger on the trigger
switch.
REMOVE THE BATTERY:
1. Press the release buttons on both sides of the battery
to release.
2. Pull the battery down, free of the drill.
CHARGE THE BATTERY:
1. Plug the AC adapter onto the battery charger. Plug the adaptor into an outlet.
The red indicator light will illuminate.
2. Insert the battery into the charger. The green indicator light will also illuminate,
indicating the battery is being charged.
3. Disconnect the charger from the outlet after 3-5 hours of charging. The
charger will not automatically turn OFF when the battery pack is fully
charged. The charging indicator light will remain ON until the charger is
disconnected from the electrical outlet. Remove the charger from the battery.
NOTE: Overcharging can overheat the battery cells and cause permanent
damage to the battery and charger. Continuous use of your tool causes
the battery pack to become hot. Let a hot battery pack cool down for
approximately 30 minutes before attempting to recharge.
ATTACH THE BATTERY:
1. Align the battery pack with the battery compartment on the bottom of the drill.
2. Press the battery into place. When it snaps, the battery is securely fastened. Do
not use the drill if the battery is not seated properly.

How to UseHow to Use
WARNING: Be aware that this tool, with the battery attached, is always in
an operating condition; it does not have to be plugged into an
electrical outlet. ALWAYS LOCK THE TRIGGER SWITCH (see
page 9) AND REMOVE THE BATTERY BEFORE CHANGING
ACCESSORIES!
OPERATING THE DRILL
1. The speed of the cordless drill depends on the amount of pressure you put on
the trigger switch. The more pressure you apply, the faster the drill will go.
Decrease the pressure and the drill will slow down.
2. The forward/reverse and trigger lock lever is used to change the direction the
accessory turns AND to lock the drill. ALWAYS Be sure the trigger switch is
released when changing the position of the lever. ALWAYS check the direction of
the rotation before use.
A. To select forward rotation, press the lever from right to left
B. To select reverse, press the lever from left to right.
C. To lock the drill, center the lever.
ACCESSORIES
1. Position the drill so it is upright
and pointed away from you as
you look down onto the top of
the drill. Hold the back of the
chuck in one hand and use
the other hand to rotate the
front of the chuck in a clockwise
direction to open the chuck.
WARNING: DO NOT attempt to tighten any accessory by gripping the
front of the chuck and turning the tool on. This may cause
injury and/or damage to the drill. When attaching or removing
the accessory from the tool, use proper protective gloves.
Accessories may be hot after prolonged use.
2. Insert the accessory shaft into the chuck opening.
3. Turn the front of the chuck counterclockwise to hold the bit in place. Tighten
securely.
HOLD
TURN
ACCESSORY SHAFT
WARNING: Never tape the trigger switch down to provide continuous high
speed! The drill may fail under such conditions, causing fire or
injury.
3. The torque settings control ring controls the level of torque. For light duty work,
use lower settings. For heavy duty work, use higher settings.
DRIVING SCREWS
1. Set the ring on the lowest setting to begin.
2. Hold the drill with both hands to ensure control if the bit should stick or slip. Try
tightening the first screw. If the drill drives smoothly, proceed with the next
screw.
3. If the drill's clutch slips, release the trigger and increase the torque setting and
try again until the drill drives the screw without incident.
4. Always keep the driver bit straight to prevent damage to the screw.
5. To prevent wood from splitting, drill pilot holes into the wood before driving in
the screws.
DRILLING WOOD
1. Use a twist bit to drill holes in wood. Make sure the bit is sharp.
2. Hold the drill with both hands to ensure control if the bit should stick or slip.
Start the hole slowly, allowing the bit to drill deep enough to prevent slipping at
higher speeds.
3. While drilling the hole, pull the bit out frequently to clear chips from between the
grooves of the bit (an overburdened bit may overheat).

How to UseHow to Use
1. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the
drill before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or cleaning.
2. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any
other condition that may aect operation.
3. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with
sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
4. Use only mild soap and a damp cloth to clean the tool. Never let any liquid
get inside the casing. NEVER IMMERSE ANY PART OF THE TOOL IN A
LIQUID.
NOTE: This cordless drill is lubricated before it leaves the factory. This
lubrication should last for the life of the tool. No further lubrication is
required.
5. Regularly clean the ventilation slots on your tool and charger using only a soft
brush or dry cloth.
6. Never open the cordless drill case, battery pack or charger. Do not attempt to
repair the drill, battery pack or charger yourself. Opening any of these parts
will void your warranty.
7. Clean the battery pack using only a dry cloth. Do not use liquids.
8. When not in use, tools must be stored in a dry location to inhibit rust. Always
store the tool in the locked/o position.
9. Always lock up and keep tools out of reach of children.
4. Keep the right amount of pressure in a straight line with the drill bit. Too little
and the bit will spin without cutting, too much and the motor may stall.
5. Just before the drill tip breaks though the other side of the work piece, drill
more slowly and decrease pressure on the tool. This will prevent stalling and
leave a cleaner hole.
6. To reduce jamming, always keep the drill running when pulling the bit out of a
finished hole.
7. Use a block of wood to back up work pieces that may splinter.
8. Use a spade bit when drilling large diameter holes in wood.
DRILLING METAL
1. Use an HSS drill bit. Apply a lubricant, such as cutting oil, to the tip of the bit
when drilling metals other than cast iron, aluminum, copper, and brass.
4. Make sure the bit is actually cutting and not spinning in the hole, as this will dull
the edges of the bit.
5. Keep the right amount of pressure in a straight line with the drill bit. Too little
and the bit will spin without cutting, too much and the motor may stall.
6. Just before the drill tip breaks though the other side of the work piece, drill
more slowly and decrease pressure on the tool. This will prevent stalling and
leave a cleaner hole.
7. To reduce jamming, always keep the drill running when pulling the bit out of a
finished hole.
DRILLING MASONRY
1. Use a masonry bit.
2. Masonry can be brittle so be careful not to apply too much pressure and crack
the material, but apply enough pressure to keep the bit cutting and not spinning
in the hole as this will dull the edges of the bit. Soft material (brick) will require
less pressure. Harder material (concrete) will require more pressure.
3. Hold the drill with both hands to ensure control if the bit should stick or slip.
Start the hole slowly, allowing the bit to drill deep enough to prevent slipping at
higher speeds.
4. While drilling the hole, pull the bit out frequently to clear chips from between
the grooves of the bit (an overburdened bit may overheat).
(continued on page 11)
5. Just before the drill tip breaks though the other side of the work piece, drill
more slowly and decrease pressure on the tool. This will prevent stalling and
leave a cleaner hole.
6. To reduce jamming, always keep the drill running when pulling the bit out of a
finished hole.
