IEX-402-SHDSL Series
Quick Configuration Guide
First Edition, January 2013

- 2 -
1. Product Overview
The IEX-402-SHDSL series is an entry-level managed DSL Ethernet
extender that allows you to extend point-to-point Ethernet connections
over a SHDSL link in a cost-effective way. Depending on cable quality,
environmental noise, and connection distance, the IEX-402-SHDSL series
offers a maximum data rate of up to 15.3Mbps and a transmission
distance of up to 8 km.
The following configuration steps will allow you to effectively reduce
deployment time, simplify maintenance, and enhance manageability.
2. Configuration and Setup
2.1 Wiring the devices
The IEX-402-SHDSL series must work in pairs. The upper port is a
10/100BaseT(x) port to connect to Ethernet-enabled device, such as a
switch or a PLC. The lower port is designed to connect both DSL extenders
via a 2-wire twisted copper cable.
NOTE
Device boot-up to connection-ready time: 70 seconds to 4
minutes, depending on line conditions.
NOTE
The DSL port is designed to be used on private communication
lines for point
-to-point connections only, and is not able to be
connected to Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN).
2.2 Configuration
Option 1: Auto mode/plug-and-play
Every IEX-402-SHDSL extender is configured (via DIP switch) as a CO
device by default. When connected, each pair will automatically designate
one device as the CO and the other device as the CPE through Auto
CO/CPE negotiation, which will attempt to establish the maximum data
rate based on the line conditions and distance.
NOTE
Auto CO/CPE negotiation is only valid under STD mode.
NOTE
Depending on line conditions, Auto CO/CPE negotiation will take
approximately 20
seconds to 3 minutes longer to establish a
connection, when compared to a
manually configured (CO to
CPE
via DIP switch settings) connection.

Option 2: Manual mode
2.2.1 Hardware configuration
The IEX-402-SHDSL provides four DIP switches for advanced
configuration.
DIP switch 1: CO/CPE assignment
Manually set the device as a CO or CPE.
DIP switch 2: DSL speed/SNR display
Decide whether connection speed or SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) status
will be displayed on the LED indicator.
DIP switch 3: ANNEX A/B setting
Check the cable type being used between the extenders. If the cable is
US-type/0.5mm, please configure as ANNEX A. Otherwise, please set to
default ANNEX B.
DIP switch 4: DSL link speed
STD mode supports data rates of 192 kbps to 5696 kbps. TURBO mode
supports data rates of up to 15.3Mbps (500 meters). If Turbo mode is
enabled, the extenders will step through different speeds until the best
bit-rate is determined based on existing line conditions.
NOTE
Link speed setting of DIP switch 4 must be identical on both
extenders. Restart both extenders if
DIP switch 4 has been
reconfigured.

2.2.2 Software configuration
Step 1: Set DSL port speed
Select the desired transmission speed and the extender will try to attain
that speed. If line condition degrades (reduced SNR), but the device is
still able to keep the link, the DSL SNR/SPEED LED indicator will display a
reduced SNR. However, if the line condition is too poor to maintain the
link, the connection will be very unstable and/or disabled, changing to
Auto speed, or to a lower transmission speed until the link is able to
connect, is suggested.
NOTE
Speed settings are only available in STD mode.
Step 2: Enable/Disable Link Fault Pass-Through.
By enabling the Link Fault Pass-Through (LFP) function, when an Ethernet
or DSL port connection fails, the Ethernet connection will be disabled on
both DSL extenders to prevent packet transmission across the failed
path.
NOTE
Please make sure that all ports are well-connected while enabling
the Link Fault Pass
-Through (LFP) function. Otherwise, both
Ethernet connections will be disabled and
you will not be
able to
connect to the configuration interface.

3. Performance
The IEX-402-SHDSL series is the ideal solution to extend point-to-point
Ethernet connections over 2-wire copper cables. Depending on the line
conditions, short-range connections normally can provide high data
transmission rates of up to 15.3 Mbps (500 m) on both upstream and
downstream links, and provide a maximum transmission distance of up to
8 km. The table below shows the performance test results under a
noise-free environment.
4. Quick Diagnostics and Easy Management
The IEX-402-SHDSL series provides LED indicators and management
functionalities for quick troubleshooting.
Option 1: LED Indicators for On-site Troubleshooting
During initial installation, if the line quality is acceptable, the connected
pairs will perform CO/CPE detection before negotiating the connection
speed over the SHDSL link. The “CO/CPE” LED color will switch between
amber and green until both extenders have finalized CO/CPE detection.
Then both extenders will determine the best transmission rate. If the link
is unable to be established within 8 minutes, you may need to check the
segment for problems such as a loose connection, environmental noise,
or excessive distance.

- 6 -
After both extenders have negotiated the best transmission rate, the
“DSL SPEED/SNR” LEDs will indicate the connection quality of the SHDSL
link. Fewer bars on the LEDs indicate poor SNR or lower speed. The
extenders will maintain the best transmission quality and speed possible
under the given environment. When no bars are showing on the DSL
SPEED/SNR LEDs, communication is unable to be established.
The "STATE" LEDs indicate the location of the link failure, allowing
network operators to immediately determine the location and quickly
recover from a link failure

Option 2: Virtualization Panel and Management via NMS for Easy
Remote Management
The virtual panel in the web-based browser provides easy remote
management at a glance, and the SNMP protocol support allows the
IEX-402-SHDSL series to be managed by Moxa’s MXview network
management software for total network manageability.
