Using the Yap Phone
PC2Phone Call
Net2Phone’s PC2Phone service lets you place calls to any
telephone in the world through your PC at significantly
reduced rates, whether or not the person you’re calling has
Net2Phone. This section explains how to place a PC2Phone
call to any number.
To ensure the high-
est quality, close
your Internet
browser (Netscape,
Internet Explorer,
etc.) and any open
applications before
using Net2Phone.
To place a call to a
regular telephone,
follow these steps:
• Remove the Yap Phone from its base (the Yap GUI should
then appear on your screen)
• Dial the number on the Yap Phone keypad (the Yap GUI must
be displayed on your screen in order to dial from the Yap
Phone)
• Once you have entered the number, press the “@” button to
initiate the call (the Net2Phone GUI will appear and the sta-
tus of your call will be displayed on the Yap GUI)
• You will be prompted to enter the PIN from the back of your
Yap Time card
(In order to avoid the need for PIN entry every time you wish to
place a call, click the SAVE PIN TO DISK box and press the YES
button to confirm you wish to save your PIN to disk). Note that
you will not be asked for a PIN number for toll free (i.e. 1-800,
1-888) calls.
You will then be advised on screen regarding your remaining
balance and talk time available, along with a
YES
or
NO
prompt
to place the call.

Dialing Tips
Following is a list of dialing tips for using Net2Phone:
• For international calls made from the U.S., Canada and the
Caribbean Islands, dial 011 + country code + city code +
number. For local and domestic long-distance calls within the
U.S., Canada and the Caribbean Islands, dial 1 + area code +
number. Even for a local call, you must dial a 1 (one) and
then your area code.
• Check your sound levels often. Other audio programs can
inadvertently change your audio settings.
• On your Display Screen, above the “Call State,” you can see
whether your call is in full-duplex or half-duplex mode. Half-
duplex (HDX) means you and your call partner can’t overlap
dialogue. Full-duplex (FDX) means you can both talk at the
same time. For more information, see the Appendix.
• To ensure the highest voice quality, exit all active programs
before using Net2Phone.
• Check the amount of funds in your account before making a
call. When the available time remaining reaches 00:00, your
call will be disconnected. Net2Phone will give you a warning
when approaching the end of your account, and recharging
your funds is easy.

Troubleshooting
Issue: The dial pad is not operating correctly and I am
unable to place a call.
Solution: Check to see if the Net2Phone icon is displayed in
your task bar (lower right hand corner of your screen).
If the Net2Phone icon is in your task bar, it must also
be open and running on your computer for the soft-
ware and dial pad to operate correctly. If the icon is
present in your task bar but not open and running on
your PC, the dial pad and software will not operate
correctly.
Issue: During a phone conversation, the person on the other
end of the call is hearing an echo.
Solution: If the person on the other end of the call is hearing
an echo, you can reduce this by adjusting your play-
back audio level:
• Enter the “Menu” option on the Net2Phone software
• Select the “Setup Wizard”
• Enter the Playback Test screen
• Select “Yap Phone Audio” under “Preferred
Net2Phone Device”
• Decrease the volume level
Issue: When trying to place a call, I receive a “Net2Phone
not configured to call through Yap Phone” error.
Solution: Make sure your audio settings are set to Yap Phone:
• Enter the “Menu” option on the Net2Phone software
• Select “Preferences” followed by “Settings”
• Confirm that “Yap Phone Audio” is displayed next to
both the Playback and Record devices

Appendix: Full and half duplex soundcards
The best way to recognize if you have a full-duplex soundcard
is to view your Settings (select
MENU
then Preferences) and see
if
FULL DUPLEX
is checked. If
FULL DUPLEX
is grayed out, you
probably have a half-duplex soundcard. You may actually have a
full-duplex soundcard, but your soundcard drivers may not be up
to date.
In order to confirm whether or not you have a full-duplex
soundcard, contact the manufacturer of your soundcard. If
FULL DUPLEX
is grayed out, Net2Phone will operate in a
half-duplex mode.
When using Net2Phone in full-duplex mode,
FDX
will appear
on the Net2Phone screen during all calls.
Using Net2Phone with a half-duplex soundcard
Similar to a walkie-talkie, a half-duplex soundcard allows you to
speak or listen, but not at the same time. When using
Net2Phone with a half-duplex soundcard, Net2Phone allows you
to choose between automatic
(VOX ON)
and manual
(VOX OFF)
modes of operation. Net2Phone will initially open in manual
(VOX OFF)
mode. In order to change from
VOX OFF
to
VOX ON
(automatic mode), press the
MENU
button and click
VOX.
When
Net2Phone is operated with a half-duplex soundcard, the TALK
button will appear between the
CALL
and
END
buttons when any
call is initiated.
VOX ON: Automatic Mode
In order to turn
VOX
on, choose
MENU
button and click
VOX
.
When
VOX
is on, Net2Phone will automatically switch between
TALK
,
SCAN
and
LISTEN
modes. When you are speaking,
Net2Phone remains in
TALK
mode until silence is detected.
Net2Phone then automatically switches to
SCAN
mode, waiting
for the next person to speak. If the person you called speaks,
Net2Phone automatically switches to
LISTEN
mode and will stay
in
LISTEN
mode until silence is detected.
When using Net2Phone in half-duplex/
VOX ON
mode,
VOX
will
appear on the Net2Phone screen during all calls.
VOX OFF: Manual Mode
In order to talk to the person you have called, either click and
hold the
TALK
button
OR
press and hold down the spacebar on
your keyboard. The word
TALK
will appear.

In order to hear the person you have called, either release your

OR
press the spacebar, you must wait until
TALK
appears on the message screen to start talking.
Do not release your mouse from the

release the

When using Net2Phone in a half-duplex mode, we suggest
operating Net2Phone with
VOX
turned off as operating with
VOX
on may deteriorate the quality of the call.
When in half-duplex/

HDX
will appear on the
