Manual Organization
This is a comprehensive guide to the steps necessary to connect the
C-Nav3050 receiver to the C-NaviGator III. The guide is split into sections that
show a step-by-step guide to establishing the connections via Serial, USB or
Ethernet.
Section 1 –Overview (Page 7) provides a brief overview of this document, along
with a section for installing the programs required.
Section 2 - Serial Connection (Page 8) Details how to connect the receiver to
control display unit via the serial connection.
Section 3 - USB Connection (Page 13) Details how to connect the receiver to
control display unit via the serial connection.
Section 4 - Ethernet Connections (Page 21) Details how to connect the receiver
to control display unit via the serial connection. This section is split into Direct
and Non direct connections.
Section 5 - Bluetooth connection (Page 33) Details how to connect the receiver
to control display unit via the Bluetooth connection.

Manual Conventions
Arial font is used for plain text in this document.
Arial italic font is used for settings names.

Section 1 –Overview
Introduction
C-Setup, C-Monitor and C-Scape are three C-Nav specific Microsoft Windows
applications that give the user the ability to control the Oceaneering®C-
Nav3050®®as well as to provide performance and reliability measures.
All software can be obtained from the C-Nav website’s Technical Support section
http://www.cnav.com/support
C-Setup is a free-to-use software package whereas C-Monitor and C-Scape
require the purchase of a dongle. This dongle must remain and be recognized
by one of the PC’s USB ports while using the software is in use. The dongle
requires additional software to be installed on the PC; instructions for this can be
found at http://www.cnav.com/support

Please note:
It is assumed that the software is already installed properly and the application
is running. Refer to the Support section on the C-Nav website for the
appropriate quick start guides.

Section 2 - Serial Connection
The C-Nav3050® receiver can be connected directly to an available COM port on
a PC via the DB9 serial interface of either of the two cables shown below:
Y-Cable, Positronic 9-Pin Male to RJ45 & DB9S/1PPS)
(P/N 94-310272-3006LFB)
or
Y-Cable Positronic 9-Pin to USB & DB9S (232/422)
(P/N NAV94-310273-3006LF).
Please follow the stickered guidelines with regards to which cable is appropriate
for each COM port on the receiver.
Once these cables are attached to the C-Nav3050® unit, it is possible to choose
either cable to control the unit via an available COM port on the PC.
Open the C-Setup / C-Monitor software by double clicking on its icon on the
desktop. Now add the device in C-Setup/C-Monitor. This can be done following
the below procedure:
1. Click New or [File / New] in C-Setup / C-Monitor.
2. Select a Device Type of “C-Nav 3050.” The Device Name and Device
Color are not crucial to successful connection, but provide a means of
identification when multiple devices are added. Press Add when finished.

3. This will open up the Device Window which is specific to the receiver
attempting to be connected to C-Setup / C-Monitor. Next select Connect
Port or [File / Connect Port].
4. Determine the COM port for the PC the C-Nav3050® has been connected
to. This can be assessed from the Device Manager settings in the
Windows OS. This can be found in the following PC directory:

Start Menu / Control Panel / Device Manager
5. Expand Ports (COM & LPT) will show the available serial ports on the PC.
Each new C-Nav3050® connected to C-Setup / C-Monitor will have a different
COM port associated with it.
If a USB-to-serial adapter is used in this connection, the same procedures above
still apply. However, it will be important to determine which COM port has been
assigned to the device in the Device Manager settings as it may be outside of the
traditional range of assignments for the communications ports.
6. If it is the first time connecting the C-Nav3050® to C-Setup / C-Monitor,
the default settings in the receiver should enable a successful connection
to the controller. Pressing Open should establish this.

7. If it is not the first time connecting, please select Show/Hide Advanced
Settings and ensure the default settings as per the screen shot below are
entered in for the Speed, Data Bits, Parity, and Stop Bits. Press Open.
The user should now witness a Device Window full of information similar
to the image on the next page.
8. If all settings are according to the defaults and a successful connection is
not established, try changing Auto-Detect Settings to Yes. Now press
Open. This will cycle through the possible combinations of connections
settings to determine if the receiver was previously connected on different
settings.

If still unsuccessful, please reset settings to defaults and email C-Nav Support at
the below address at your earliest convenience for troubleshooting assistance:
A successful connection will look similar to the below with position information
changing approximately once per second and a complete Quality Panel of
information.

Section 3 - USB Connection
For a C-Nav3050® to be recognized by a PC, it is necessary to install a USB
driver. Using the latest control software this should be handled automatically. If
there are any issues then the driver can be sourced from the installation folder for
C-Setup / C-Monitor:
If it is the first time a connection has been attempted via USB for this receiver, it
may be necessary to set the USB Mode settings on the receiver prior to
attempting a USB connection. This will need to be done via an available serial
connection. Please refer to Section 2 - Serial Connection (Page 8) for
instructions on how to establish a serial connection to the device.
1. Once a connection is established, navigate to:
[Device / Hardware Settings]
Ensure USB Mode is set to “Serial Port” then press Apply.

2. The C-Nav3050® receiver can now be connected directly to an available
USB port on a PC via the USB end of the Y-cable shown below:
Y-Cable Positronic 9-Pin to USB & DB9S (232/422)
(P/N NAV94-310273-3006LF)
Windows will then proceed to search for the driver. This will cause a new device
to be added to the Device Manager in Control Panel.
Under Ports (COM & LPT) there should now be a device named either
A. C-Nav3050® GNSS Receiver:
Or B. SOLARIS VIRTUAL COM:
If the latter is the case it is required to install the USB driver for the C-Nav3050®
receiver to be assigned an available virtual serial port via the USB interface.

1. Right click the SOLARIS VIRTUAL COM that has appeared in the Device
Manager and select Update Driver Software.
2. Next select Browse my computer for driver software.
3. Specify the location of the “C-Nav3050®_USB.inf” file by clicking
Browse…, selecting it from the appropriate directory, then click Next.
Please note:
If an entry in the Ports (COM & LPT) already shows C-NAV3050® GNSS
Receiver then skip to Page 17 of this manual for further procedures.

4. A pop up box may appear stating that Windows can’t verify the publisher
of this driver software. Click the Install this driver software anyway
option.
The driver should now be successfully installed and the unit can be found in
Device Manager.

The device now has a virtual serial port assigned to it, COM8 in this example.
Now connect to the device following the same instructions as for the Section 2 -
Serial Connection (Page 8) section making sure to select the virtual serial port
assigned to the C-Nav3050® USB interface by the Device Manager.
1. Click New or [File / New] in C-Setup / C-Monitor.

2. Select a Device Type of “C-Nav3050®” The Device Name and Device
Color are not crucial to successful connection, but provide a means of
identification when multiple devices are added. Press Add when finished.
3. On the Device Window, select Connect Port or [File / Connect Port] to
bring up the connection settings for the receiver.
4. Under ‘Port Name’ select the assigned COM port for the C-Nav3050® as
determined by the Device Manager settings. Then press Open.

A successful connection between receiver and controller via USB should now be
in effect. This can be confirmed by the display of Quality Panel and Position
Information.
Please note:
Each new receiver connected to the PC will require the USB driver process to
be completed for a successful connection to be administered. As such, each
new C-Nav3050® connected to C-Setup / C-Monitor via USB will have a
different COM port associated with it.
