1. RemoveBeatnikfromitspackagingandremovetherearbattery
doorcover.
2. InstallsixAAbatteries(provided)usingthecorrectorientation
indicatedinsidethebatterycompartment.Thenreplacethebattery
doorcover.YoucanoptionallyuseanACadapter.
3. SetthePowerSwitch,locatedontherearpanelabove“Settings,”to
On.
UsingtheDefaultSettings
Thedefaultsettingsset atthefactoryare:Analyzer=Subdivision;
View=Autoswitch;Tempo=60;Note=sixteenth;SkillLevel=medium.
Allareexplainedinmoredetaillater.
Tostartyoursession, simplypressthe Start/Pause button.The
builtinmetronomesoundssixteenthnotesat 60beatsperminute.The
fourverticaldottedlinesonthedisplayrepresentthefour16
thnotesina
quarternote.
Totestyourskills,playthe16
thnoteswiththemetronome.When
youstrikethedrumpad,Beatnikdisplaysarealtimeviewofyour
stroke timingandcalculatesarunningscoreofyourperformance
accuracy.Whenyoustopstrikingthedrumpad,Beatnikautomatically
switchestoitsHistorysummaryviewthatrepresentseachstrokeasa
singledotsothatyoucanseethehistoryofeverynoteyouplayed.
Topauseyoursession, pressthe Start/Pause buttonagain.
Toresetyourscoretozeroandclearyourhistory,press
the Reset button.
ChangingDefaultSettings
Tochangesettingsforthetempo,note,volume,etc.,
pressthebuttonofthesettingyouwanttochange.Whenthebutton

Beatnikismorethanafancymetronome.Withitstwointeractive,
practicalandintuitivebuiltinanalyzers,Beatnikprovidesinstant
visualandaudiofeedbackonyourtimingandrhythmicaccuracy.This
letsyouimmediatelyanalyzeyourtechnicalprecisionandassessyour
strengthsandweaknessestohelpyouspeedupyourprogresstoward
rhythmicperfection.
Afteryousetthedesiredrhythm,simplystarttherhythmplaybackand
strike thetouchsensitivepracticepad.Beatnik’slargedisplayshowsa
visualrepresentationofeachstrokeinrealtimeandrecordsevery

MetronomePanel
TheMetronomepanelincludesthefollowingcontrols:
¾ Tempo–Letsyouchangethemetronome’stempo(quarter
notebeat).

¾ Volume–TheVolumecontrolletsyouadjustthevolumeof

Theoutputspeaker isdisconnected whenaheadphone plug isinserted
intheBeatnik’sheadphonejack. Externalspeakerssuch ascomputer
speakerscanalsobeusedifequippedwitha3.5mmplug.

TheACjackletsyoupower Beatnik fromastandardACoutletusing

PoweringBeatnik
Youcanpower Beatnik usingsixAA batteriesoranoptionalAC
adapter. TheACAdapteroutputspecificationsareasfollows:9V,
DC300mAwiththeTipplugconnectorinthePositiveposition. We
recommendtheBeatnikACadapteroptionalaccessory.(seepg.26)
AttachingtheACAdapter
Tosavebatterypower,youcanpowerBeatnikusingthe optional
Beatnik adapter.
ToattachtheACadapter:
1. Plugtheadapter’sbarrelplugintotheAC jackonthebackof
Beatnik.
2. PlugtheotherendoftheadapterintoastandardACoutlet.
InsertingBatteries
IfACpowerisnotavailable,youcanpowerBeatnikusingsixAA
batteries.

SettingtheTempo
SetTempo
The settempo isthemetronomemarking thatyouset forthequarter
notebeat.Forexample,ifthe currentsettingsdisplay showsaset
tempoof“120,” Beatnik issettoplay120 quarternote beats per
minute.
Tosetthetempousingtheselector:
1. PresstheTempobutton. Thebutton illuminates, indicatingthe
selector iscontrollingthe tempo.
2. Turntheselectortodisplaythedesiredtempo.
3. PresstheStartbuttontostart apracticesession.
TosetthetempousingtheTapTempo function:
1. With Beatnik paused,presstheClick/Tapbuttononce.
2. Strikethedrumpad atleasttwotimestosetatempo.
3. PresstheStartbuttontostartapracticesession.

MeasuredTempo
The measuredtempo isthetempoofyourstrokesasBeatnikmeasures
them.Forexample,ifthesettempo is“120”andthemeasuredtempo
isonoraround“130,”yourstrokesareoccurringatafastertempo
than Beatnik,whichmeansyou’replayingaheadofthebeat(i.e.,
rushing).

Beatnik usesaquarternoteasitsfundamentalbeat.Thenoteselection
functionletsyouselectasubdividednoteforthe quarternote.For

Tostartapracticesessionbasedonthecurrentsettings, pressthe
Start/Pause button.Whenyoupressthisbutton, Beatnik playsthe
currentrhythmindefinitelyoruntilyoupresstheStart/Pausebutton
again.Duringplayback, Beatnik recordsanystrokesthatoccur.

Topauseapracticesession,pressthe Start/Pause button during
playback.
Note:IftheViewissettoAutoSwitch and youstopplaying whilethe
metronomecontinuestosound, Beatnik automaticallyswitchesto the
History view . This letsyouimmediately viewpracticeresultswithout
pausingthesessionormanuallychangingviews. Assoonasyou
resumeplaying, BeatnikautomaticallyswitchestoRealtimeview and
continuestorecordyourplayinghistory. See“ViewOptions”for
moreinformation.
UsingtheTapStartControl
Youcanalsouse the TapStartfunctiontostartapracticesession.See
“Click/Tap” below.
TheAccuracyAnalyzers
Beatnik featurestwo accuracyanalyzers,eachofwhich letsyou
analyze yourperformanceskillsinauniqueway.
GrooveAnalyzer
GrooveAnalyzer isintendedtohelpyouimproveyourabilityto create
andplayina“groove.”This analyzer testsyourabilitytoplaywith
consistenttempo,regardlesswhetheritisaheadoforbehindthebeat
ofthemetronome.
Groove featuresahorizontaltemporangewiththesettempodisplayed
inthecenter,amovingarrowthatshowsyourmeasuredtempo asthe
practicesessionprogresses,andbuzzerstowarnyouofdriftingtempo.
Ifyourmeasuredtemporemainswithinthelimitsoftheskilltolerance
range, Beatnik remainssilent.Ifyourmeasuredtemposlowsdown
belowtheskilltolerancerange, Beatnik soundsalowwarningbeep.If
yourmeasuredtempospeedsupandexceedstheskilltolerancerange,
Beatnik soundsahighwarningbeep.Thefourskillbuttontolerances
are+/ 5bpm,+/10bpm,+/20bpmand+/25bpm.
Youcan avoidthewarningbeeps by maintaining a consistenttempo.

SubdivisionAnalyzer
SubdivisionAnalyzerisintendedtohelpyouimprovethetimingof
eachsubdivisionwithinthefundamentalquarternotebeat.The
SubdivisionAnalyzer showsaseparateverticalclickmarkerforeach
subdivisionofthe beat.The datadisplay’stotalwidthrepresentsone

Realtime – Thisviewdisplaysasingle,touchsensitive,verticalstroke
indicatoreachtimeyoustrikethedrumpad.InRealtimeview, Beatnik
recordsthehistorybutdisplaysonlythestrokeindicatorforthemost
recentstroke,allowingyoutoconcentrateoneachstrokeasyoumake
it.

History – Thisviewdepictseachstrokeasasinglepixel withinthe
datadisplay.Overthecourseoftheentirepracticesession,thepixels
accumulatefromthebottomuptoprovide,ataglance,aclearpicture
ofyourtimingtendencies.Forexample,aHistoryviewthatshowsthe
majorityofthestrokes(pixels)nearaclickmarkermeansthatyou
wereveryaccurate.Ontheotherhand,ifthehistoryviewshows
severalpixelsthatarebeforeandaftertheclickmarker,aswellas
someontheclickmarker,yourtimingneedswork.

Auto Switch – Thisviewautomaticallyswitchesbetween Realtime
view and Historyview, dependingonwhetheryouarestrikingthe
drumpad.InAutoSwitch view, Beatnik automatically displays
Historyview after itdetectsnodrumpadactivityfor onecomplete
beat. Beatnik automaticallyswitchesto Realtimeviewwhenyou
resumestrikingthedrumpad.Thisprovidesaddedconvenienceby
showingpracticeresultsassoonaspossiblewithouthavingto
manuallychangeviews.
SkillLevelsandScoring
SkillLevels
Beatnik letsyouadjusttheskillleveltoallowawidermarginof
tolerancefor timing accuracy.Youcanselectfromthefollowing
levels:
¾ Low
¾ Medium
¾ High
¾ Expert
Beatnik calculatesthemarginoftolerancein512
thnotes.Forexample,
theExpert level allowsamarginofasingle512
thnotetodeterminea
“perfect”stroke.Thatis,toobtainaperfectscore of100% at the
Expert level,yourstrokemustbewithinone512
thnoteoftheactual
beat.
Themargins oftoleranceforthedifferentskilllevels are asfollows:

Theskilllevelcansignificantlyaffectthescore.TheLowskilllevelis

Conversely,the Expertlevelallowsaverynarrowmarginforerror,
whichcanresultinmuchlowerscores. Youcanchange the skilllevel
when Beatnik ispausedandinstantlyseethechangeinscore. The
currentsettings displayindicatestheskilllevelasshownbelow.

Tosetthe skill level usingtheselector:

Scoring
Thescore reflectstheaccuracyofallnotesintherhythmicpattern
basedontheselected skilllevel.Thescoreareaonthe current settings
displayrepresentsthescoreasapercentage,witha lowerpercentage
indicating lessaccuracyandahigher percentageindicating more
accuracy. Duringthepracticesession,thescorechangesdynamically
toindicatethecumulativescoreforallnotesthathavebeenplayed
thusfar.
Click/Tap
TheClick/Tapbuttonworkstwoways.Ifthepracticesessionisstarted
andrunning,thebuttonfunctionsastheClickDepthcontrol.Ifthe

ClickDepthControl
Duringapracticesession,the Click Depth controladjuststhe“depth,”
orfrequency, ofthesubdividedmetronomeclicks.Forexample,ifthe
subdivisionis32
ndnotesataquicktempo,youmightwanttoreduce
theclickstoalowersubdivisionsuchas 16
thnotes, 8
thnotes, or quarter
notes. Atfastertempos,thiscan makeiteasiertodistinguishyour
strokesfromtheaudible metronome clicks. Eachtimeyoupressthe
Click/Tapbutton,youreducethe click depth byhalfuntilonlythe
quarternotebeat sounds. Evenifyoureducetheclickdepth, Beatnik
stillrecords andscores allstrokesfortheselectednotesubdivision.
Tochangetheclickdepth:

TheTapcontrolworksaseitheraTapTempocontroloraTapStart
control. The TapTempo control simplysetsthe tempobasedon
strokesonthedrumpad,allowing you tomanuallystartapractice
sessionlater. The TapStart control setsthetempoandautomatically
startsapracticesessionbasedona numberof countoff beats thatyou
specify, allowingyou to startapracticesession“onthefly.”
TousetheTapTempofunction:
1. With Beatnik paused,presstheClick/Tabbuttononce.
2. Strikethedrumpad twice andviewtheresultingtempo.
