Fiber Information
This unit was manufactured with attention to fiber cleanliness by TKH Security Solutions USA. Beyond the
optical safety information contained in this manual, the following guidelines should be observed when
working with optical fibers.
The biggest problem is dirt!
It takes very little contamination to cause problems with optical fiber connections; cleanliness is extremely
important to proper operation of optical equipment.
1. Protect optical connectors by leaving the connector covers in place on unused fiber connections and on
the fiber tips themselves.
2. Personnel who remove and replace fibers should be equipped with a fiber cleaning kit. These are
inexpensive and can be obtained from any fiber equipment supply house. If you choose to, you can use
propanol and lint-free tissue to clean fibers.
a. Do not use isopropanol alcohol (typically called rubbing alcohol) mixed with water. This can cause
additional spots. (Caution:
Pure isopropanol is very flammable!
)
b. Use lintless tissues to clean fibers.
c. Clean the fiber with a folded tissue moistened with the propanol, pulling the connector tip across
the tissue, then turn the connector 90 degrees and repeat in a different spot on the tissue.
d. Don’t pull the fiber across and then push it back. This will put the dirt that was cleaned off back
on again.
e. Repeat the process on a dry, folded tissue.
3. When removing fibers,
always
clean them when replacing them no matter how long you had them off.
4. When connecting fibers, pay attention to the bend radius of the fibers. A general rule is to have a 3-inch
(8 cm) bend radius. A bend radius less than 3 inches is an attenuator and can cause optical signal loss.
5. Installers of fiber equipment should be equipped with the equipment manuals and an optical power
meter to measure the optical inputs and outputs in a system. An optical power meter is an inexpensive
tool that can save much time and effort in getting optical communications links up and running. Properly
equipped and trained installers can quickly determine the source of any problems that occur.
External Wiring Information
Cable assemblies with lengths external to the unit not exceeding 3.05 meters, coiled or uncoiled, may be
constructed of jacketed appliance wiring material suitable for the maximum voltage current and temperature,
rated VW-1 or FT-1 or better. Cable assemblies with lengths external to the unit not exceeding 3.05 meters,
coiled or uncoiled, and supplied by a limited power source or NEC Class 2 source of supply as defined in the
National Electric Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, may be constructed of materials rated VW-1 or FT-1 or better with no
additional requirements.

9
Functional Description
A pair of 9973-C interface cards provides a 10 base T Ethernet link via the duplex high-speed ports available
on many video and data fiber transmission cards. The 9973-C has a built-in four-port, unmanaged 10/100
Ethernet switch.
The cards operate on 6VDC as supplied by the chassis into which it is installed.

10
9973-C Indicator, Connector, and Switch Locations
FIGURE 1
1. HIGH-SPEED PORT STATUS INDICATOR
This three-color indicator provides status on the high-speed port connection to the opposite end of the
link:
If
red
(No Sync, No Loop), there is a problem with the signal being received from the opposite end
of the link.
If
yellow
(Sync, No Loop), the local receiver is receiving a good signal from the far end, but the far
end is not receiving the signal from the local end.
If
green
(Sync, Loop), the local receiver has a good signal and the remote receiver is reporting a
good signal.
2. HIGH-SPEED PORT CONNECTOR This RJ45 connector connects to the high-speed port on the fiber
communication card via the provided Cat5-type jumper cable. The cable provided is a shielded Ethernet-
type cable. Should a longer cable be required, a shielded cable should be used. When using cables longer
than a meter, the setting of Switch 1-3 may need to be changed to accommodate the timing changes
caused by longer cables.

11
3. 10/100 ETHERNET SWITCH PORTS (PORTS 1 THROUGH 4)
Each of the eight RJ45 Ethernet switch ports is 10/100 Ethernet, Auto Negotiate, and Auto MIDX.
Each port has a yellow Full Duplex/Collision LED. This LED is always illuminated when the port is
operating in Full Duplex mode. In Half Duplex mode, this LED will not be illuminated, but will blink
when there are collisions on the port.
Each port also has a green Link/Activity LED that illuminates when the port has established a link and
will blink when there is data activity on the port.
4. DIPSWITCH —S1
This dipswitch is used to set or correct for the high-speed port cable length. See the Set Up section for
details on setting this switch.

12
Set Up and Operation of the 9973-C
Set up and operation of the 9973-C cards consists of setting the high-speed cable length switch if necessary,
installing the unit into a Series 9000 chassis, and connecting the Cat5 jumper cable from the high-speed port
on the optical communications card to the 9973-C.
The high-speed port connector cable should be a shielded non-crossover RJ45 Cat5 type cable. If the cable
supplied is not long enough for your application, a longer shielded cable may be used to connect the high-
speed port on the 9973-C to the high-speed port on the fiber optic host card. If this cable is longer than
approximately 1 meter, then dipswitch S1-3 may need to be reset. TKH Security USA recommends that the
supplied cable be used.

Timing Adjustment Switch
OFF
Setting S1-3 Dipswitch
If the 9973-C is located further away from the high-speed port on the transmission card than the supplied
cable will allow, a number of considerations must be taken into account:
If it is necessary to replace the supplied cable, a high quality, shielded UTP cable should be used.
If the length of the replacement cable length exceeds approximately 1 meter, dipswitch S1-3 may need
to be changed to the ON position. This adjusts the timing on the high-speed port interface of the 9973-C
to allow for the timing loss created by the longer cable.
The dipswitch should only be changed if the
Ethernet link appears to be marginal in operation.
If the cable length exceeds 1 meter by a large factor, it may even be necessary to reset the switch back
to the original OFF position to adjust for an even further timing shift.
Dipswitch S1-3 compensates
only
for the timing between the 9973-C on which the switch is located and
fiber transmission card connected directly to that high-speed port. If, at the other end of the fiber link, a
long cable is used between the 9973-C there and it’s mating transmission card, the dipswitch on the
9973-C at that end of the link may need to be changed as well.
Operation
Operation of the 9973-C is straightforward. Once connected, the link should pass 10 Mb Ethernet signals. The
9973-C Ethernet four-port switch is a simple unmanaged 10/100 Mb Ethernet switch. The backplane of this
switch will support 100 Mb operation on each port. Even though the switch supports 10/100 Mb Ethernet, the
fiber part of the link between the switches is limited to a throughput of 10 Mbps.

13
Typical Application of the 9973-C
This application drawing shows a pair of 9973-Cs used in a system with the high-speed ports on a pair of
9252DT and DR cards. The combination provides eight simplex video, three built-in data ports on the 9252D
pair, and the duplex high-speed port that is used by the 9973-Cs. The 9973-Cs each support four 10/100
Base T Ethernet ports and the 10 Mbps Ethernet connection between the 9973-C on each end.
Troubleshooting 9973-C Links
Normally the first step in troubleshooting is to insure that the optical link on the host cards is operational. The
9973-C depends on a correctly operating duplex high-speed port link for proper operation. If the fiber and link
status indicators on the video/data host cards are normal, follow the procedures below.
Check the high-speed port status indicator on both ends. These should both be
green
. If either end is
red
or
yellow
, there is a problem with the high-speed port link. Check the connector cables from the duplex high-
speed ports on the host optical link cards to the 9973-C high-speed port connector. These jumpers are
shielded, non-crossover Cat5 type jumpers. If you are not using the supplied jumper cables and have used
longer cables, they must be shielded and adjustments may need to be made to dipswitch #S1-3. Refer to the
Set Up section of the manual for details on setting this switch.
If both loop indicators are
green
, the data ports and the Ethernet port should be operational.

14
