NTRODUCTION
One of the highly desirable features of the GlobeSurfer III device is the ability to network together
Printers and External Hard Disk drives (aka File Servers) directly, and share these devices over the
Local Area Network (LAN) via WiFi or connected Ethernet.
Being a ‘router’ device, the GlobeSurfer not only links together Printers and Hard Disk drives, but
also additional laptops or desktop computers that are sharing the WiFi or Ethernet based LAN.
In this document we will go through the steps necessary to enable printer sharing and file sharing,
and show how you can extend the advanced features of your GlobeSurfer, thereby enhancing the
user experience for all connected clients.

GlobeSurfer III includes a print server that allows printers attached to the device via the USB
connection to be shared by all computers on the LAN.
To configure a network printer, you must first open the GlobeSurfer Management Console, which
can be easily accessed via your Web Browser software.

Once your web browser has been opened, type: 192.168.1.1, and the GlobeSurfer Management
Console will appear (as displayed above).
Upon successful logging in, you will then be presented with the “Basic Graphical User Interface
Mode”.
Next, select the “Print Server” option from the Home screen.

The 'Printer'screen appears, where you can view information about your printer, as well as view a
list of print jobs (when prints are in the queue).
When first establishing a connection to a new printer, the “Enabled” check box must be selected.
The GlobeSurfer will then look for any printer devices attached to the router.

The auto-detecting nature of the GlobeSurfer GUI will refresh to show the printer connected, along
with a link (in blue) to the printer device. By pressing on the blue printer link (as seen above), the
following screen is presented:
The user can rename the printer here, and can find the URLs necessary to ‘mount’ the printer onto
the users desktop for printing. By clicking on the SMB URL, the following screen appears:

The printer is now installed and ready to be used by network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) connected users.

Normally the method indicated above will be sufficient to enable the configuration of your printer,
however in some cases a more granular approach may be necessary.
In the event the above fails to locate or enable your printer, please try the method outlined below.

To use the print server on the Option GlobeSurfer, you need to accomplish the following tasks:
a. Install the printer drivers on the computer
b. Connect the Printer to you Option GlobeSurfer
c. Add a network printer on your Windows based PC
3.1 Install the Printer Drivers
Printers using the USB port come with a software installation CD for installing the printer drivers
and applications. The drivers for the printer must be installed on the computer first to prepare it to

use the printer when it’s connected to the GlobeSurfer. Refer to the printer’s documentation on how
to install the drivers.
3.2 Connecting the Printer
a. Turn OFF the GlobeSurfer.
b. Connect the Printer to the USB port and switch ON the router and printer.
3.3 Add a Network Printer
3.3.1 For Windows XP
Before you continue, ensure that you’ve installed the printer drivers on this computer and the printer
is attached to the GlobeSurfer.
a. Click on the Start Button > Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Printers and
Faxes.
b. Click on the File Menu > Add Printer.
c. Click on Next on the Add Printer Wizard page.
d. Choose Local Printer attached to this computer and click Next, on the Local or Network
Printer page.
e. Choose Create a new port and on the drop down box choose Standard TCP/IP Port then
click Next.
f. Click Next button on Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard.
g. Enter your GlobeSurfer’s Default Gateway IP address 192.168.1.1 then click Next.
h. Under Additional Port Information Required choose Custom then click Next
i. Once the computer detects the printer on the Print Server, it will ask for the printer
manufacturer and model, a list of printers will be shown, select the your printer from the
list and click OK.
j. Choose Keep existing driver (recommended) then click Next until you reach Completing
the Add Printer Wizard.
k. Click Finish to complete the installation.
3.3.2 Printing a Test Page after Installation
a. Open the Printers and Faxes page from Control Panel.
b. Right click on the new printer and click on Properties.
c. Click on the Print Test Page button on the Printer properties page, the test page will be
printed on the network printer.
3.3.3 For Windows Vista
a. Click on the Start Button> Control Panel.
b. Click Printer under the Hardware and Sound category.
c. Click on Add a Printer.
d. Click on Add a local printer then click Next.
e. Select Create a new port, on the drop down box choose Standard TCP/IP port then click
Next.
f. Enter the Default Gateway IP address of your GlobeSurfer 192.168.1.1 then click Next.
g. Under Additional Port Information Required window, select Custom then click Next.
h. Once the computer detects the printer on the Print Server, it will ask for the printer
manufacturer and model, a list of printers will be shown, select the your printer from the
list and click OK.
i. Select Use the driver that is currently installed then click Next.
j. To print a test page click on Print a test page on the confirmation screen, click Finish to
complete the installation.
k. If Printing was unsuccessful right click on the Printer’s icon then select Properties.

l. Under printer’s Properties click Port Tab and tick the IP address (192.198.1.1) that was
set on previous settings then click Apply

GlobeSurfer III includes a file server function that allows external hard disk drives to be attached to
the device via the USB port. Once the external disk drive is connected, it can be shared by all
computers on the LAN.

To add an external hard disk drive to the GlobeSurfer III device, and use it over the LAN, follow the
steps listed below.
2) Power OFF the GlobeSurfer III if the external hard drive draws its power from the device it is
being connected to (ie., pocket drive or memory stick type hard drives), in this case – the
GlobeSurfer III.
3) Connect the external hard disk drive to the GlobeSurfer USB port, and then turn on the
GlobeSurfer III.
4) Log in to the GlobeSurfer Management Console (as described in the Printer setup section).
5) Select the “File Server” icon from the Basic or Advanced Home Screen.

Once you insert your external hard drive to the USB port on the GlobeSurfer III, the browser will
refresh to show the presence of the external device.

Open Windows Explorer and type in Address : \\192.168.1.1\share or \\GlobeSurferIII\Share. A new
client windows will open showing the content of your external drive.
In order to configure your external hard drive device so that it is available every time you insert it
into the GlobeSurfer III, then select “Map Network Drive” from the Tools menu and assign a drive
label (such as ‘G:’).

It is possible to re-format your external hard drive in FAT32 format through the GlobeSurfer III
device if you require read/write functionality.
