The Snap Server®12000 Ethernet Card
These instructions explain how to replace an Ethernet card on the Snap Server.
Replacement Part Inventory
Before you begin, make sure you have the following items from the package
containing the replacement Ethernet card:
• The Ethernet card in an anti-static bag
Tools Required
• Phillips screwdriver
• Motherboard extraction tool
Overview of the Procedure
To remove and replace the Ethernet card, you perform the following tasks:
• Shut down the server and disconnect the power cords and Ethernet cable(s)
• Remove the motherboard tray assembly
• Remove the old Ethernet card from the motherboard
• Install the new Ethernet card on the motherboard
• Insert the motherboard tray assembly
• Restart the server
Shutting Down the Server
1Shut down the server.
Caution Shut down the server before you make any repairs. Improper shutdown may
lead to loss of data or physical harm.

2Turn off the power modules.
Make sure the switch on each power module is in the off position.
3Disconnect the AC power cords from the back of the server.
4Disconnect the Ethernet connectors.
Removing the Motherboard Tray Assembly
1At the back of the server, loosen the 2 thumbscrews on either side of the
motherboard tray assembly.
2Attach the ends of the motherboard extraction tool behind the loosened
thumbscrews.

3Pull the motherboard tray assembly out of the server.
4Place the motherboard tray assembly on a grounded, padded surface.
You reinstall it later in the procedure.
Caution There are static-sensitive electronics inside the server. Before you handle
any parts, make sure you are working at a static-controlled workstation and that
you are properly grounded.

Removing and Replacing the Ethernet Card
1Unscrew the top screw that attaches the Ethernet card bracket to the
motherboard tray.
Set the screw aside in a safe place. You use it later to attach the bracket on the
new Ethernet card.
2Remove the old Ethernet card.
3Insert the new Ethernet card.
Press firmly to be sure the card is seated properly in its slot. Avoid contact with
metal surfaces on the card. Grasp or press the edges only.
4Replace and tighten the top screw connecting the Ethernet card bracket to the
motherboard tray.
Inserting the Motherboard Tray Assembly
1Slide the motherboard tray assembly back into the server.
2Tighten the 2 thumbscrews on the motherboard tray assembly.

Reattaching the Power Cords and Ethernet Connectors
1Make sure the switch on each
power module is in the off position.
2Reconnect the AC power cords and
Ethernet connector to the back of
the server.
3Turn on the power modules.
Restarting the Server
Once you have completed the replacement procedure, you must restart the system.
