Thank you for choosing our Pandroid 600 Mhz Deluxe Netpad with digital
signal processor, a multi-touch computer that is keyed to modern living. We
challenged our designers to come up with a pad that is light, compact and
affordable and that runs like the wind. Despite weighing just 360g and the
small footprint of 0.33 litres (190.5 x 118.5 x 14.7mm), it includes a turbo-
charged 18cm (7in) true colour screen at 800x480 pixels, as well as USB2,
Wi-Fi, 3G compatibility, surng and browsing and a media player that can
play the latest music and video formats. The Android 1.5 operating system
(“Cupcake”) includes Google Market, with instant access to thousands of
widgets and downloadable applications (‘apps’).
We hope the Pandroid will soon take its place at the heart of your digital
life, looking good while giving you years of reliable service. Please take a

Before You Begin
Before unpacking the box make sure that you have a clear, tidy
space at least 30cm x 30cm. Open the box carefully and retain
the packaging and all instructions for future reference.
A wide range of Applications (‘Apps’) and utilities for
computers running the Google Android operating system is
available by searching in Google Market and on the web. You
may have to meet the provider’s licence requirements, and
may be required to make a small, non-refundable payment to
download certain Apps. Please satisfy yourself that the App
meets your needs before downloading.
For late-breaking news, updated installation instructions,
downloads, and answers to frequently asked questions
(‘FAQs’) please visit http://www.pandroid.co. It may help
installation if you are able to take a look from a home PC.

Task Bar Icons
Your Pandroid includes a notication area at the top of the screen that keeps
you informed of what’s happening without interrupting your work. Small
icons appear, for example, to let you know when new messages arrive, le
downloads complete or a Wi-Fi network comes into range. The chart below
shows the icons and explains what they mean.

Getting Started
Booting Up
• Charge the unit by attaching the mains adaptor to socket [1]. It will
charge faster when not in use, but can run straight from the adaptor
• Click the Power button [2] down to the on position
• Hold down the Home button [3] for ten seconds until a penguin icon
appears on the top left hand corner of the screen.
• When the start-up sequence is complete press the Menu button [4]
• If prompted enter the password or your touch pattern. (The unit does
have either of these set when it leaves the factory.)
• The main desktop will be shown
Network Connections overview
• On rst use you will need to set up your network. If you have used the
unit before your settings will be remembered, but you may need to
reconnect if you have chosen a power-saving scheme.(To reconnect
click the Settings icon then Network and Connect.)
• The bottom of the opposite page shows how to follow these steps:
1. searching for a network
2. entering an access key or code
3. connecting to your chosen network.

Using The Multi-Touch Screen
Your Pandroid has a state-of-the-art touch screen, with an intuitive on-
screen keyboard that pops up automatically when you need it. Using it
will soon come naturally with these simple actions:
• click - gently touching a button on the screen with your nger and then
moving your nger away (you can also use a touch pen*). Clicking
in a form eld or in an application requiring data entry automatically
summons the pop-up keyboard.
• press and hold - this action, where your nger or the pen stay on the
button a little longer, selects and activates applications in a similar
way to a double click on a PC
• slide or rapid slide - this action allows you to move from one window
to the next or to move it horizontally or vertically
• drag - hold your nger on a button or the bars at the side of a window
and then gently move left or right, up or down to move the item
To allow the on-screen keyboard to use full-size keys in half of the desktop,
the letters, numbers and symbols are separated into three screens. You
can swap between them by clicking the the toggle button that alternates
between numbers (‘123’), letters (‘ABC’), or symbols (‘ALT’) at the left
of the spacebar. The operation is quite similar to using Caps Lock on a PC.
Connecting to a new Wi-Fi Network
Your Pandroid is equipped to connect to any network that complies with
the 802.11b or g standard. To do this rst you need to nd (‘discover’) the
network and then connect to it by entering a code or password. You will
nd the keycode in the instructions for your Router or Wireless Hub.
1. To locate the networks within range, touch the Settings
icon, then Wi-Fi and then Wi-Fi Settings. Look through
the list of networks to nd one that you are allowed to
access. Each will have a name assigned by its owner. Some may
belong to your neighbours and you should not connect to them, even
if you are able to do so. Choose the network for which you have they
code or password by click it and then choosing Connect.
* A touch pen is not supplied. If you choose this input method please be sure to select a blunt,
non-abrasive pointer that will not scratch or damage the touch screen, and use it with care.

2. According to the security protocol used by your chosen network,
a box will appear requesting an access code or encryption key.
Touch it to summon the on-screen keyboard and carefully
copy the access key from your Router or Wireless Hub.
Take care to copy it exactly. It is case sensitive. Use the Caps Lock,
and [ABC/123/ALT] toggle key to nd the symbols you require, and
then touch the [Done] button at the bottom right of the screen.
3. When you enter the key correctly your Pandroid will connect to your
chosen network and indicate the signal strength. It will keep the key
details for future access so that you do not have to enter them again,
unless you explicitly delete the connection. To test your network link
click the ‘Home’ (house icon) in the top navigation browser and touch
the ‘Browser’ or ‘Opera Mini’ icon.
Setting The Date And Time
Your Pandroid’s date and time can be set automatically by the geographical
positioning feature of the Operating System. However if you are not planning
to use the Wi-Fi network, or if you nd that the date or time is not set correctly,
you can turn this feature off and set them by hand by following these steps.
1. From the Home screen touch the Settings icon, then Date and Time
Settings and uncheck the Automatic checkbox
2. Click to set the time using the Up and Down buttons for the hour,
minutes, seconds and AM or PM (or choose the 24 hour clock style)
3. Choose a Date Format and then one-by-one click on the Day, Month
and Year elds and set them using the Up and Down Keys
Setting The Country And Language
To change the preset country and language, please follow these steps:
1. From the Home Screen press Menu and then Settings and then
Regional and Text
2. Click Select to make your choice with the Up and Down Keys.

Setting Up And Using eMail
Please make sure that your Pandroid’s date and time are set correctly
before setting up or accessing your mailbox or Google Market. Providers
often use the local date and time to synchronise mail and applications.
If necessary follow the steps on the previous page to make any changes.
Initial Set-Up
You can skip the steps on this page if you use an on-line browser-based
mailbox like 1&1. These steps allow you to set up a local mailbox on your
Pandroid and to make a background check for mail every few minutes.
Your Pandroid includes an open systems email client and the popular
Gmail application. Whichever you choose, it is easy to set up.
1. Click the arrow key to the right of the main dektop and then touch the
either the email icon or the Gmail icon.
2. A wizard opens. The email wizard needs settings from your provider,
who will tell you whether your mailbox is a ‘POP3’ or ‘IMAP’ type.
Enter the details and press ‘Next’. (Gmail skips this step)
3. Enter the email address and the alias (the name that is to appear in the
‘From’ line of outgoing emails) and click Next
4. The Pandroid will access the chosen mailbox if it is available.
If you are unable to connect to the mailbox, you may need to reconnect
your Wi-Fi. To do this go to the Home Screen and then touch the Settings
Icon, then Network and then Connect.
Connecting and sending from an existing mailbox
1. Click the arrow to the right of the desktop and then the eMail icon
2. Click on the email display and then Inbox
3. Press the Menu button for options to create, forward, delete or send
Follow the steps at the end of last paragraph if you have difculty
accessing your mailbox.

Multimedia
Your Pandroid makes a great portable entertainment centre. It includes
a media player for music and sound les with a decoder for MP3, wave
(WAV) and Windows Media Audio (WMA) les, and a Video Player for
MP4, MPEG1 and MPEG2 or 3GP (mobile phone) les. It also includes
a built-in voice recorder for dictation and notes, an image gallery feature
and USB and SD card ports to make it easy to transfer les. The media
player is designed so it can run in the background while you use the Pan-
droid for other things, as well as taking centre stage! It is very easy to use.
Music
1. Choose by category: Artist, Album, Song or Playlist. Click the
arrow to the right of the desktop then Music and then an Artist,
Album, Song or Playlist.
2. To create a playlist click hold the song name down until the add to
playlist dialogue opens. Either you can choose to add the song to an
existing list or to create a new one. Click Save when you are nished.
3. You can also choose any song to be a Ringtone. This can be cong-
ured as the alarm clock sound, with Apps like Skype or in conjunction
with our optional 3G application.
4. To delete a playlist, press and hold the list and choose Delete from the
pop-up menu and conrm that you are sure.
5. Choose ‘Play with Rock Media Player’ (There are lots of other
free media players to choose from in Google Market if you prefer.)
Video
1. Click the Video Player icon and use the Explorer to browse to the le
that you want to open and click it
2. If the le is in a compatible format it will open and play. You have
options to pause, rewind and eject the movie.
3. The Video Player will open automatically if you go to a web page and
click a compatible video link.
Photo Browser
1. Click the Photo Browser icon and browse to a le. It will show
thumbnails of the pictures stored on your Pandroid. Choose one.
2. The application can show photos as a slideshow and offers to rotate or
crop them, use one as wallpaper or send it to friends by email.

Camera/Camcorder
1. Click Home then Application then Camera or Camcorder
2. The Camera controls are displayed
3. Note: applications like Video Conferencing also use the camera.
Setting the Pandroid’s audio volume
To make one-off adjustments click the + and - buttons in the notication
area (1and 2 above). You can also congure the default volume for
media and a number of system events like receiving a message or clicking
a button. Touch Settings and then Sound and Display and then...
• for the music and video default sound level choose Media Volume
and drag the bar to the desired level.
• for the ring level choose NoticationTone and drag the bar to the
desired level
• for the screen button sound choose Button Operation Sound or Tone
Selection and use the drag bar or pick the tone from the list

Pandroid Surfing And Browsing
Your Pandroid includes a choice of two web browsers which have been
optimised for touch operation, minimising keying. These are context-
sensitive so that the on-screen keyboard will pop-up when required. The
native browser has tight integration with Google, the makers of Android,
using GPS technology to improve your surng experience. Ofcianados may
prefer the more sophisticated Opera Mini browser, or you can download the
Android-compatible browser of your choice in Android Market.
You can choose a default home page separately in each browser, and can
also capture bookmarks and choose a search provider. Click the [Options]
button (illustrated on Page 6) to open the bookmarks and web menu.
It is important to note that Android does not include some of the ‘nanny’
prompts that you will nd in Microsoft Windows, relying on your good
judgement. Please follow these steps to protect your identity and to avoid
having to reset the Pandroid to its factory settings*.
• Android does not include anti-virus software to maximise performance.
It is however available on demand in Google Market. Without protection
please take extra care and only download Apps or les if you trust the
source.
• Take extreme care before giving your credit card number or revealing
your identity on-line, particularly when surng on a public network like
an Internet Cafe. Remember that there are rogue sites on the Internet.
• Ensure that any le sharing sites or downloads do not break a third
party copyright. Your internet service provider may be forced to give
details of the les that you have downloaded, so beware!
• To keep surng at full speed, delete any tracking cookies or unwanted
downloads regularly. Otherwise the response will get slower over time.
• Remember that the Pandroid has only very limited storage, which can
easily be lled up. As a rule ‘delete as you go’, particularly videos and
multimedia content. Save anything you want to keep to a removable SD
card so there is always plenty of room on the ash card.
*You can reset the Pandroid to its factory settings (see ‘Troubleshooting’ on
Page 19 for details). If you choose to reset the device unfortunately you will
lose any applications you have downloaded unless you have kept a copy to
install again.

Pandroid’s Built In ‘Apps’
One of the joys of Android is the wide variety of Applications available for
download. Most of these ‘Apps’ are free, although some require a small fee.
They vary from the very simple to the sublime, and as a general rule if they
are good on a mobile ‘phone they will be great on the Pandroid.
We’ve pre-installed a number of Apps on your Pandroid for you to explore
and experiment with. They are designed to be intuitive and if you don’t like
them you can always download an alternative. The built-in Apps include:
• an Alarm Clock to get you up on time and a Calendar
• a File Manager to manage the content on your Pandroid and move les
from the main ash disk to SD cards as required or just delete them. You
can also create folders to make things easier to nd
• a Quick Search tool to help you locate items on your Flash or SD card
• Google Maps is a complete Geographical Positioning System, helping
you to get from A to B. The Pandroid includes a location sensor.
• DataViz Documents to Go Lite allows you to open les created in the
main Microsoft Ofce applications, including Word, Powerpoint and
Excel, as well as Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) les. When
you register the vendor will offer you an upgrade to a version that can
also create Microsoft Ofce documents on the move, which is good
value at under £10.
• the on-screen Calculator is a handy feature
• a Stop Watch is included
• the Pandroid also includes a number of games and is full congured to
view videos using the highly popular YouTube app and website.
Adding New Apps using Google Market or by downloading
1. Click the ‘Google Market’ icon for access to wealth of downloadable
Apps. We have pre-congured the market for optimum performance.
2. Downloading applications requires a Micro-SD card for storage
3. Google Market manages your downloads and installations for you so
that you don’t have to worry about complex settings
4. You can also download applications from websites. To install the le
simply double click its name in the downloads window.
5. NOTE: Windows downloads and ZIP les will not work. Search for
‘APK’ downloads, which are written for Android computers.

Managing Your Pandroid
Extra Security
If you want to prevent other people from being able to access your
Pandroid and the data that it contains, you can use a log on pattern, which
requires the user to touch the screen in several places at once to sign on.
This innovative feature is very secure, but it does increase the log-on time
and it is important not to forget the pattern, otherwise you’re in trouble!
1. Touch Settings, then Security and Location and then Settings
Unlock Pattern
2. Choose four of the nine contacts on the screen to be your pattern by
touching the screen until you are happy with pattern you have chosen
3. Click Continue and re-enter the same pattern to conrm and set it
4. You will now be prompted for a pattern before logging on.
Removingoldapplicationsandsurplusles
Good housekeeping will help to keep your Pandroid running at full speed.
You can use the File Manager to delete old downloads and any les you
no longer need, or to move them to a removable SD card by touching the
File Manager icon on the desktop.
To remove unwanted Apps touch Settings. Click and hold the app icon
and then choose Manage Application then Uninstall and conrm OK if
you are sure you want to remove the Application.
Energy saving to extend the battery running-time
Your Pandroid includes a number of options to save power, which will
allow the unit to run longer on battery power before needing a recharge.
These can be accessed through Menu and then Settings. You can:
• set the amount of time before the screen turns off
• set the amount of time before the Pandroid goes to sleep
• set the screen brightness to indoor rather than outdoor mode
• set the Wi-Fi to stay disconnected until required
Experimenting will you help you to nd your personal optimum settings.

Do’s And Don’ts
Your Pandroid is engineered to give years of loyal service, so long as you
follow some simple rules to keep it in tip-top condition. Most are plain
commonsense. We have arranged them into ten ‘Do’s’ and ten ‘Don’ts’
Do
1. Keep the Pandroid clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent
2. Store the Pandroid in a carry case to prevent it getting scratched
3. Take back-ups from time to time to protect your data. The USB socket
provides a handy way to connect an external back-up drive.
4. Keep plenty of free space on the Flash disk for fast operation
5. Remove Apps that you don’t use to save space
6. Remove Multimedia content from the Flash disk once played
7. Recharge the Pandroid when it’s not being used
8. Use the Pandroid on a rm surface and avoid dropping it
9. Keep a note of your pattern password for emergencies (if set)
10. Check www.pandroid.co for updates and extras
Don’t
1. Use strong solvents or acid-based cleaners on the Pandroid
2. Immerse the Pandroid or get it wet
3. Snag the Pandroid on keys or sharp objects in your bag or pocket
4. Download Apps from people you don’t know and trust
5. Allow children under ve to use the Pandroid unsupervised
6. Stick anything into cabinet or ports except approved accessories
7. Attempt to open the cabinet or effect a repair
8. Snag the power cable or allow loose cables to trip or injure anyone
9. Regularly run the Pandroid straight from the mains adaptor or over-
charge the Pandroid battery. Disconnect it when it is fully charged.
10. Use the Pandroid if the operating temperature is lower than one
degree celsius or higher than thirty-ve degrees celsius.
Taking care of your Pandroid will not only extend its life but also make
it run faster and for longer periods before it needs to be recharged. The
battery life will vary according to the brightness, Wi-Fi settings and sleep
settings.

These are the main Frequently Asked Questions at the time of going to press.
1. My Pandroid Cannot Connect to Wi-Fi
-Make sure your wireless network hub is turned on and ‘discoverable’
-Take care to enter the encryption key in the correct case with spaces
and symbols
- Check the specication of your network and see whether you can
connect by moving closer to the hub. Wireless technology struggles
with some metal joists and other building materials
- Follow the troubleshooting guide in your hub or router instructions
2. My Pandroid gets quite hot
- the base of the Pandroid does get warm under intense use
- this is to be expected and is quite safe
- In hot weather you can place the Pandroid on a docking station fan to
cool it - it will love you for doing this, and respond by running faster!
3. A third party App doesn’t work correctly
- unfortunately some Apps rely in proprietary (non standard) features
on a particular mobile phone or computer. It is normally best to
download an alternative rather than spend time troubleshooting
- many Application vendor are happy to receive feedback and provide
Frequently Asked Questions on their websites which include ways of
working around installation problems
4. I can’t send email
- the normal reason is because either there is no network coverage
where you are or the Pandroid has switched off the Wi-Fi feature to
save power
- choose Settings then Network then Connect to check and correct this
- you may also have exceeded your mailbox size with your provider

Advanced Questions
1. My Pandroid has been infected with a virus, or has become very
unstable or I have forgotten my pattern. Can anything be done?
When all else fails it is possible to do a ‘hard reset’ which returns the
Pandroid to its factory settings so that you can start again.
WARNING: all downloaded Apps and personal data will be lost
unless you have backed them up to an SD card or USB disk.
IF YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU WANT TO RESET THE PANDROID
touch the Settings icon, then click the SD storage card and click
Restore Factory Settings. The screen will go black for up to two
minutes before the Pandroid restarts.
Take care not to re-introduce the virus or problem by installing the
infected or faulty application again. You need to work out what you
had just installed before the problem rst arose.
2. How do you install and get started with Skype or Fring?
Skype and Fring are third party applications that enable you to make
free telephone calls using Voice Over IP (VOIP) technology. Your
Pandroid is capable of running this software if you have a suitable
headset and agree to the vendor’s contractual terms.
The installation steps are:
- nd a copy of the Skype for Android or Fring application in Google
Market, the vendor’s website or a le sharing site that you trust
- download the .apk le to your SD card and then double click the le
in the download manager
- review and conrm the vendor’s contractual terms that pop up as part
of the installation wizard and complete their sign up form.
WARNING: do not use Skype or a headset when driving or when you
may be distracted from dangers around you (e.g. walking in heavy
trafc).
