RE AD BEFORE OPERATING EQUIPMENT
This product was designed and manufactured to meet strict

insta ll ation and operation precautions which you should be
particularly aware of.

3. Heed Warnings -All warnings on the appliance and in the
operating instructions should be adhered to.
4. Follow Instructions -All operating and use instructions
should be followed.
5. Cleaning - Unplug this product from the wa ll outlet before
cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners.
Use a damp cloth for cleaning.
6. Attachme nt s - Do not use attachments not recommended
by the product manufacturer as they may cause hazards.
7. Water and Moisture -Do not use this product near water -
for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or
laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool,
and the like.
8. Accessories -Do not place this product on an unstable
cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The product may fall,
causing serious injury to a child or adul t, and serious
damage to the appliance. Use only with a ca r t, stand,
tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the
manufacturer, or soldwith the product. Any mounting ofthe
app liance should foll ow the manufacturer's instructions,
and should use a mounting accessory recommended by
the manufacturer.
9. Ventilation - Slots and openings in the cabinetare provided
for ventilation an to ensure reliable operation ofthe product
and to protect it from overheating, and these openings
must not be blocked or covered. The ope ni ngs should
never be blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa,
rug, or other sim il ar surface. This product should never be
placed near orovera radiatoror heat register. This product
should not be placed in a built-in installation such as a
bookcase or rack un less proper ventilation is provi ded or
the manufacturer's instructions have been adhered to.
10. PowerSources -This productshould be operat ed only from
the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If
you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home,
consultyour appliance dealer or local power company. Fo r
products intended to operate from battery power, or other
sources, refer to the opera ti ng instructions.
11. Groundi ng or Polarization - Th is product is equipped with a
3 wire grounding type plug, a plug havi ng a third
(grou nd ing) pin.This pl ug will on ly fit intoa grounding type
power outl et. Th is is a safety feature. If you are unable to
insert the plug fully intothe outlet contact your electrician to
replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety
purpose of the grounding type plug.
12. Power-Cord Protection -Power-supply cords should be
routed sothatthey are notlikelyto be wa lked on or pinched
by items placed upon or against them, paying particular
attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and
the po intwhere they exit from the appliance.
13. If an extension cord is used wi th this product, make sure
that the total of amperage ratings of the products plugged
into the extension cord do not exceed the extension cord
amperage rating. Also make sure that the total of all
products plugged into the wall outlet does not exceed 15
amperes.
14. Object and Liquid Entry - Never push objects of any kind
into this product through openings as they may touch
dangerous voltage po ints or short-out parts that could
result in a fire or electricshock. Never spill liquid ofany kind
on the product.
15. Servicing -Do not attempt to service this product yourself
as openi ng or removing covers may expose you to
dangerous voltage or other hazar ds . Refer all servicing to
qualified service personnel.
16. Damage Requiring Service -Unplug this product from the
wall outlet and refer servicing toqualified service pe rsonnel
under the following conditions:
a. When the power-supply cord or pl ug is damaged.
b. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the
product.
c. If the product has been exposed to rain or water.
d. If the product does not operate normally by following the
operating instructions. Adjust on ly those controls that are
covered by the operating instructions as an improper
adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will
often require extensive work by a qualified technician to
restore the product to its normal operation.
e. If the product has been dropped or the cab inet has been
damaged.
f. When the product exhibitsa distinctchange in performance

1. Fo r units set at 120-127 V: use a UL listed cord set consisting of a minimum 18 AWG, type SVT or
SJT three conductor cord a maximum of 15-feet in length and a pa rallel blade, grounding type
attachment plug rated 15 A, 125 V.
For units set at 220-240 V (domestic use USA): use a UL listed cord set consisting of a minimum
18 AWG, type SVT or SJT three conductor cord a maximum of 15-feet in length and a tandem
blade, grounding type attachment plug rated 15 A, 250 V.
Forunits set at 220-240 V(outside ofUSA): use a cord setconsisting ofa minimum 18AWG cord
(H05-VVF) and grounding type attachment plug rated 15 A, 250 V. The cord set should havethe
appropriate safety approvalsfor the country in which the equipment will be installed and marked
HAR.
2. Ex tension boards may only be used when UL listed.
3. For In stallation or replacement ofextension boards, the user should carefully read the installation
procedure bypacked with the extension board.
4. Do not operate the CD-I system without cover and do not operate the CO-I system without
extension boards in extension slots mounted and fixed to the chassis with screws.

WELCOME TO CD-I
This Compact Disc Interactive (CD- I) system is des i gned to run
di scs conforming to the CD -I standard. It wi ll also pl ay CD-
Audio discs and the audio tracks of 12 cm LaserDi scs, and can
be extended f or use as a CD -ROM drive. Ext ens ion slots and
RS 232-C 1/0 ports all ow fo r the connection of periphera ls and
communication devices , for memory extenti on and for
server/networking configurations to suit specific applicat ions,
inc l uding CD-ROM . The floppy disc dr i ve of t he COi 605T is a
versatile system-specif ic storage and retr ieva l fac ility.
IMPORTANT SAFE.GUARDS
Before attempting to install or operate th is app liance, please
read the Important Safeguards under the front cover flap.
INSTALLATION
Positioning
Pl ace the system on a firm fl at surface. K eep away from heat
sources and direct sunlight. In a cabinet, allow 2-3 cm of free
space all round for ventilation.
Settings
For co rr ect settings see this user manual and/or the Technical
Manual.

CONNECTIONS
For cables other than those supplied, please contact your
national Philips organization.
CAUTION: never make or change connections (other than the
headphone) with the power switchedon. It is advisableto make
allother connections before connecting power.
Video
• Three videooutlets are located on the rear panel. In orderof
preference to obtain the best achievable picture quality,
they are:
A. RGB
B. Y/C (S-Video)
C. CVBS (Video)
Connect the outlet that will give the best picture quality on the
display unit used.

A. RGB Connection: th is D-sub connector supplies analog
RGB signals at the voltage level given in the Technical
Data section. This outlet is not compatible with the
connectors of the same type used on computer
terminals. Connect to the display unit using an RGB
cable (Supplied in Europe).
B. Y/C Connection: connect to the display unit Y/C (S-
Video) socket using a Y/C (S-Video) cable.
C. CVBS (Video) Connection: connect to the display unit
CVBS (Video) socket using a CVBS (Video) cable
(Supplied in USA).
• 525/625 Line selector switch
Before switching on the system, make sure that the Line
Selectorswitch on the rear panel issetto the correct position
for the display unit:
525 for NTSC
625 for PAL
Audio
A. Sound reproduction via the display unit:

Connect the L and R Audio sockets to the L and R audio
sockets on the display unit using the cable supplied (USA).
Match the colours of the plugs and sockets.
B. Sound reproduction via a HiFi stereo system:
Connect the L and R audio sockets to the CD, TV , AUX,
Tuner or Tape in sockets of the audio amplifier using the
cable suppli ed (USA). Match the co lours of the plugs and
sockets.
CAUTION: Do not connectto the amplifier Phono sockets.
C. Headphone sound:
For indivi dua l listening, connect a headphone to the front
panel socket.
Note. Connecting a headphone does not mute the
loudspeaker sound. This must be done manually, on the
display unit or HiFi system, if required.

Ifyou have to fit a ma ins plug, proceed as follows:
The wires in the ma ins lead are coloured:
Green and Yellow-Earth Blue-Neutral Brown-Li ve
As these colours may not correspond with the colour markings
identifying the terminals in your plug proceed as follows:
The wire which is co loured Green and Yellow must be
connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter E or
by the earth-symbol or coloured Green or Green and Yellow.
The Brown wire must be connected to the terminal which is
marked with the letter L or coloured Red.
The Blue wire must be connected to the terminal which is
marked with the letter N or coloured black.
Note. Th is apparatus must be protected by a 3 a mp fuse if a 13
amp plug is used, or, if any other type of plug is used, by a 5
amp fuse either in the plug or adaptor, or at the distribution
board. If in doubt consult a qualified electrician.
• Voltage Setting
Make surethat the Voltage Se lector switch on the rear panel is
set to the correct position:
100-120 V for the USA/JAPAN
220-240 V for Europe
CAUTION: Do not connect power until this switch has been
correctlyset.
• Power Connection
Connect the power supply cab le between the power connector
on the rear panel and a power supply socket.

SYSTEM EXTENSION, COMMUNICATION AND INTERFACING
Pointing Device
The mouse supplied is generally suitable for all applications.
Connect it to the CD-I 1 /0 po rt 1 on the front panel or to the
CD-I 1 /0 port 2 on the rear panel.

CAUTION: For correct operation, connections to all l/0 ports
must be made with the power off .
Other Pointing Devices and Controllers
For some applications, other types of po inting devices,
keyboards or controllers may be required. The types defined in
th e CD-I Pointing Devices and Keyboards specifications, which
can be connected through the CD-I 1/0 ports 1 and 2, wi ll
usually suffice. For spec ific applications, however,t he range of
special devicesthat can be connected is virtuallyunlimited. For
further information on this subj ect , pleasecontact your national
Philips organization.
A CD-I remote control can be used also for all po int and
clickfun ct ions.
RS 232C Ports
1/0 ports 3 and 4 (D-sub 9) on the rear panel can be used for
general RS 232C based devi ces according to the app lication.
Further information on this subject can be found in the CDI
Technical Manual.
Depending on the app lication, RS 232C based devices may
also be connected to CD-I 1/0 port 2.
Emulator
• The emulator signal connectors are located on the rear
panel, the fo ll owing signals are avail ab l e:
A. RS
B. DO
C. SWITCH
A. RS connection: this c in ch connector provides commands for
the external drive(s) or emulator.
B. DO (Digital Out) connection: this cinch connector is an input
for DO signals from the external drive(s) or emulator.
C. SW IT CH connection: with this cinch connector the emulator
interface can be sw itched over from internal to external and
vice versa.
• Internal/External emulator switch
When the emulator interface is not used the emulator switch on
the rear panel should be set to the 'Internal' position.
SCSI
• The SCSI (50 pins microribbon) connector is located on the
rear panel. In the standard configuration it supports the
in terfacing to an SCSI harddisk an d Tapestreamer. Fo r other
SCSI applications, please contact your nat ion al Philips
organization.
Ethernet
• The Ethernet (thin wi r e, BNC) connector is located on the
rear panel. It serves as an in terface to all th in wire based
LAN's using TCP/ IP.
Printer Port
• T he pr inter (25 pins SUBD) co nnector is located on the rear
panel. This interface is fully compatible with the IBM PC (*}
implementation (Standard Parallel Port).
Extension Slots
The upper extension slot is provided for fi tting a FMV extension
or customized interface ca rds according to the application.

INTERACTIVE OPERATION
In normal interactive operation, the mouse is used to select
functions displayed on the display un i t. Simply roll the mouse
on a flat, smooth surfacetopointthe cursorarrow onthe screen
to the required func ti on, and then press one of the two action
buttons.
Loading a disc
Po int and click on open (you may also press the open/close
button on the player) to open the disc loading tray.

Fi r st , take the transport pad away. Next, take the disc from its
holder and place it on the tr ay with the label up.
Poi nt and cl ick on close (you may also press the ope n/close
button on the player, or gently push thefront of the tray) toclose
the tray.
The TV screen changes according to the type of disc .
Caution : never put mo re than one disc at a time into the CD-I
player.
Unloading a disc
Point and cli ck on open (you may also press the open/close
button on the player) to open the di sc loading tray. The player
start-up sc reen reappears on the TV.
Tak~ the di sc from the trayand repl ace it in its holder.
Point and click on close (you may also press the open/cl ose
button on the player, or gently press the front of the tray) to
close the traywith or without a new disc .
Note : You may unload the di sc at any time by pressing the
open/close button. Unloading a CD- I disc while the CD-I
program is running, will terminate the CD-I program ab ruptly.
"Bookmarks" or intermediate results, if used by the CD-I
program, might not be updated to the latest situation.

Warning: When a title consist of more than one consecutive
disc, a so -called "Multi- disc " title, foll ow the instructions for
opening and closing of the tray as shown on the screen. When
you use the 'OPEN" button on the player the title is considered
to be played wholly and any intermediate scores, setti ngs or
"Bookmarks" wi ll not be updated . Any addit ional disc of the
multi-disc title will not be recogni sed as par t of i t. The tray may
also be closed by gently pressing the front of i t.
Preparation
• Press the Power On/Off buttonon the front panel, and check
that the Power On indi ca tor lights or flashes briefly.
• Swit ch on the TV (and HiFi system, if used).
• Select the CD-I i np ut on the TV (and Hi Fi system, if used).
Note. Connecting a headphone does not mute the
loudspeaker sound. Th is must be do ne manually, on the
display unit or HiFi system, if required.
• On the TV, the Player Start-Up screen appears. This screen
has four system functions to guide and assist you

• SETTINGS: to presel ect your preferr ed start -up conditions.
• DI M: to red uce the screen brightness while the system is at
rest.
• MEMORY: to refer tothe titles and FTS programs you give to
CD -Audio di scs .
• OPEN/CL OSE: to open or close the di sc tray.
The 605T Tools menu
The Start-up sc reen in the CD-I 605T has an extra icon. This
icon, located in the uppe r ri ght corner, displays the amount of
extended memory (ROM and RAM in Mbyte) the system has.
Select this icon to ca ll up the CD -I 605T Tools menu.
