SafetyMeter software is protected and can only be operated with the SafetyMeter
soundcard, accessories and specied hearing protection products.
3 Installation
The SafetyMeter system provides in-situ verication of the acoustic attenuation provided
by a Phonak hearing protection device.
SafetyMeter conrms the eectiveness of Phonak’s hearing protection systems by
checking that the in-ear shells properly seal the ear canal.
Reasons for leaky hearing protection devices include:
uImproper in-the-ear t of the shells by the user. This can be easily improved by training
the user on how to correctly insert their hearing protection.
uWrong size/shape. Occasionally custom-molded shells are inaccurately produced, for
example as a result of a poor quality ear impression being taken. A shell that fails
SafetyMeter should be sent back for replacement. Ideally a new ear impression should
also be taken.

Use the SafetyMeter software only after reading and accepting the license agreement. The
system requirements and SafetyMeter test specications need to be strictly followed.
3.1 System requirements
uWindows 2000 / XP / Vista / 7 (32-bit version only)
uCD-ROM drive
uMinimum RAM: 512MB
uAdobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later (available for free from www.adobe.com).
3.2 Important notice
For correct SafetyMeter testing, the left and right markings and positioning of both
headphones and hearing protectors must be respected.
Color indicator: Blue = Left ear
Red = Right ear
Always make sure the user wears the headphones with the L-cup on the Left ear
and the R-cup on the right.
Any unauthorized installation of software and/or soundcard and/or calibration of the
SafetyMeter soundcard and/or headphones and/or probes, which could damage your
computer/system or cause you hearing problems are prohibited. Phonak declines any
responsibility for any consequences.

3 Installation
When the installation is complete, the following shortcuts will appear on your PC’s
desktop:
PDF Folder Contains PDF versions (grouped by company) of all attenuation
control certicates.
DATA Folder Contains the raw data (grouped by company) of all attenuation
control tests. This data can be retrieved and exported to Excel in ’Data
browser’ mode.
The folder ’MONTHLY_REPORTS’ will group all attenuation control
results (independently of the company) in one data le per month
and per operator.
HELP Folder Contains all on-line help topics in a single document that can be
printed and used alongside this User manual. This help document is
available in English, French and German.
SafetyMeter icon Double-click this icon to start SafetyMeter.
3.4 Installing the SafetyMeter equipment
You need a desktop or laptop PC that is capable of playing audio. An attached printer is
also recommended for printing out SafetyMeter certicates, as is Adobe Acrobat Reader
for previewing the PDF certicates.

3.3 Installing the SafetyMeter software
Insert the SafetyMeter CD-ROM in your PC's CD-ROM drive.
The CD-ROM will auto play.
In case of auto play not starting, go to "My Computer", double-click the "CD/DVD" drive
icon, then double-click on the "SafetyMeter.exe" installation le.
Click "Next" and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
Installation of the SafetyMeter software will only begin after you have read and
accepted the SafetyMeter license agreement.

menu, select

PAC Speakers.
uIn the
"Recording"
menu, select
the Phonak
PAC Line.
uConnect the headphone cable to the HEADSET socket of the soundcard.
Check that the cable is properly attached to the headphones' cups: the blue
connector must be plugged into the cup with the L mark. The red connector must
be plugged into the R cup.
Select the probe you are going to use rst. Plug it into the PROBE socket of the soundcard.
The software will issue a warning message if the headphones and probe have been
wrongly connected to the soundcard.
uUsing the USB cable provided, connect the SafetyMeter soundcard to a free USB slot
on your computer.
We recommend always using the same USB slot of the PC if possible, so that you
are not requested to install the soundcard driver again.
Windows Vista and Windows 7 users must manually set the Phonak soundcard as the
default sound device in Windows settings.
uIn the Start menu of
your PC, select "Control
Panel" then "Sound"

4 SafetyMeter operating modes
SafetyMeter has 4 operating modes:
uAttenuation control: this is the main operating mode. It serves to verify the protection
level provided to the user by a Phonak hearing protection device, while the user wears it.
The result of an attenuation control is a graph of the attenuation level versus frequency, for
the left and right protections, as well as an estimated Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR).
A Personal attenuation control certicate (in PDF form) is generated when an attenuation
control session has been completed. This certicate summarizes the main information
concerning the particular user, their product and the protection provided. The results are
also stored in an Excel le.
uDemonstration: this mode is used to demonstrate to a customer what a SafetyMeter
attenuation control session involves. It features a sequence of typical session screenshots.
uData browser: this allows the operator to sort attenuation results by company and by
date, then export this data into an Excel le.
uSystem check: performs a 2-step check of the SafetyMeter's headphones and probes
to ensure that the system is fully operational and attenuation control results are accurate.
The SafetyMeter software automatically requests a system check once every 6 months.
System check 1: veries that the sensitivities of the microphones contained in the head-
phones and in the probes are matched. This test requires Check disc 1.
System check 2: veries that the probes are perfectly sealed and do not have any defects that
might adversely aect the results of the attenuation control. This test requires Check disc 2.

6 "Attenuation control" mode
6.2 Operator screen
The operator screen must only be initialized once. Data is stored and reloaded the next
time the software is activated.
6.3 Company screen
'Company name' refers to the company or professional that purchased the hearing
protection in question. All attenuation results and PDF certicates will be stored in a
folder labeled using this name.
'Language for printing' applies only to the Personal Attenuation Control Certicate and
can dier from the screen language (selected under Parameters/Language).
6.4 Product screen
Select the product to be tested from the drop-down list.
If a product is not on the list, check that its corresponding probe is selected and
has passed the System Check.
6.5 Calibration screen
The probes in use must be calibrated daily. We strongly recommend calibrating these
probes on-site just before use.
Make sure the probe and headphones are connected to the soundcard.
Place the probes in the corresponding openings of Check disc 1 as
explained in the on-line help. When Check disc 1 is correctly positioned,
the probes will sit as shown on the right:

All entered data (user, product, operator) is repeated in the bottom frame e.
The left-hand buttons follow the attenuation control test sequence r.
To go to the next step, click the "right arrow" button t or Page Down on the keyboard. To
return to the previous page, click the "left arrow" button or Page Up on your keyboard.
On-line help is available for each screen. Activate this by clicking the "?" button at the
bottom left of the screen u.

The noise reduction level – in dB – of each ear shell is provided for information t.
The Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) is a single number rating that approximates the
SNR or NRR attenuation values as measured per ISO 4869 or per ANSI S3.19-1974 u.
The PAR expresses the amount of noise reduction – combined for both ears – which the
device under test provides to its user.

Press both headphone cups together, then start the calibration process.
If the calibration is not successful follow the on-screen instructions.
6.6 User screen
The 'DWOM Nr.' is a unique identier that links a hearing protection device to a specic user.
The DWOM is printed on the user-label of each device, in both barcode and text form.
We recommend acquiring the 'DWOM Nr' using a barcode reader in order to avoid mistakes.
You can also enter this number manually (it is the 10-digit number below the barcode).
6.7 Measurement screen
Click the blue-tagged probe into the user’s left ear shell.
Click the red-tagged probe into the user’s right ear shell.
User inserts ear shells with the probes attached.
Verify that the shells are correctly positioned in the user’s ear and that the probes are
clicked in.
Place the headphones over the user's ears. If ear-jewelry interferes with the headphones,
kindly ask the user to remove it.
Instruct the user to remain quiet (no speaking or chewing) during the measuring
process.
"Click to start measuring’ initiates the attenuation control process.
The 'Measurement and results' screen shows:
A graph of the attenuation provided by each ear shell, displayed in decibels across the
frequency range e.

The protection is valid
* The Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) is based on the result of a single us er test with SafetyMeter.
The PAR is the “single user equivalent” of a Single Number Rating (SNR) as measured per ISO 4869. The PAR is
computed like an SNR except it is calculated individually for the user and does not include a standard deviation
correction.
The [PAR-1.1dB] is the “single user equivalent” of a Noise Reduction Rati ng (NRR) as measured per ANSI S3.19-1976.
The [PAR-1.1dB] is equal to an NRR calculated individually for the us er, i.e. excluding standard deviation corrections
and 3dB spectral uncertainty factor.
In case of doubt, please use the SNR and NRR attenuation values as given i n the user instructions.

6.8 When to accept or reject an ear shell?
If a shell receives invalid results ( ) 3 times in a row, it should be rejected and returned
to Phonak Communications for replacement. The SafetyMeter check should be performed
again, with both user’s shells, when the replacement shell has been received.
6.9 Certicate description
Operator's header, as dened under
Parameters/Certicate header.
User and test information.
Test result, i.e. attenuation level of the
user's protection.
If the hearing protection is valid, maximum
exposure times are also recommended.
These values only apply to this specic
protection system.
6 "Attenuation control" mode
If the protection being tested is reported to be invalid, check that the probes are
properly attached to the shells and that the shells are being worn correctly. Then
restart the measuring process.
Measuring can be repeated several times for the same user by using the 'Restart measuring'
option. When re-running this process again the results from the previous test will not be
saved.
The latest measurement results will only be stored by clicking the 'Save and go to next
user' button.
To preview the Attenuation Control Certicate click the Preview icon at the bottom-left
of the screen i.
Print preview allows you to:
uCheck the certicate’s layout and content
uZoom in/out
uPrint the certicate
uSave the certicate as a PDF le
uAdd the PDF certicate as an e-mail attachment

If a probe's status is Ïthen the warnings counter must be checked:
uIf one or more warnings remain, you can continue to make attenuation controls with
that probe. However please perform the system check as soon as possible.
uIf a probe’s warning number reaches 0, the system will not allow attenuation controls
to be performed with the probe and corresponding products will no longer be displayed
on the product selection list. To re-include these, a system check must be passed by the
corresponding probe.

Select the probe you are going to check from the list (highlighted in grey).
Make sure the probe and headphones are connected to the soundcard.

The software automatically suggests a system check every 6 months. When a system
check (for a specic probe) is necessary the below message appears at start-up.
This message appears every time SafetyMeter starts-up, up to a maximum of 5 times for
each probe.
Each time this message is displayed, the warnings counter of the probe decreases (see
paragraph 7.2).

the "left arrow" button or Page Up on your keyboard to return to the previous page.

7.2 Probe screen
All available probes are listed in the middle frame. The date when these were last checked
is given, as well as their status u.
Once a probe has been successfully checked its status is marked Ç. It can then be used in
attenuation control mode.

In the central table t, select the result rows you want to export than click "Export
to Excel".
Specify the name and save location of the resulting Excel le.
9.1 Monthly reports
In addition to exporting test results in Excel format for the customer, SafeyMeter also
automatically generates a monthly data le for its operator to use. This le is stored in the
’DATA Folder’ and named according to the year (yy), month (mm) and operator name. For
example: 'yymm_operator name.dat'. It is intended to provide statistics data to Phonak
Communications.

In demonstration mode the operator can show a customer what an attenuation control
session involves by moving through the dierent control screens, which display typical
data. A "Demonstration" watermark is visible on-screen at all times.
Demonstration mode can be selected from the "Mode" menu and run when the SafetyMeter
soundcard is connected to the PC.
Demonstration mode can be run without a SafetyMeter soundcard being connected to
the PC. The following message appears at start-up.
Select "Demo mode" to perform a demonstration.
9 "Data browser" mode
Data browser mode allows attenuation results for any given company to be exported to
an Excel le.
Select the company for which you require attenuation results via the drop-down menu
at the top of the window e.
Select the dates rof the results you require.

11 Internet software updates
Once you have purchased SafetyMeter you are entitled to download further software
updates directly from the internet. The software checks whether internet updates are
available on start-up.
This feature can be deactivated in the menu "?/Internet update": just uncheck the "Check
the version on startup" option.
There are several reasons why communication with the update server might not be
established.
10 Background information
SafetyMeter veries the attenuation that a Phonak hearing protection ear shell provides
to the user, while he or she wears it.
There are several advantages to running a SafetyMeter test:
uUser and employer rest assured that the hearing protection is protecting the user
eectively.
uThe user receives training on how to t his/her ear shells and experiences how it feels
when the hearing protection is worn correctly.
uTest results are stored and can be included in hearing conservation programs, helping
employers to comply with national standards and/or the recommendations of
occupational safety organizations.
The SafetyMeter test is objective and does not require the user to provide any subjective
feedback. The soundcard plays reference sounds through the headphones while miniature
microphones, mounted in the probes, capture the residual sounds inside the user's ear
shells. The dierence between the two signals is used to compute the eective attenuation
provided by the shells.
A relatively quiet room (such as an oce) is needed to run a SafetyMeter test. The
attenuation check takes approximately 20 seconds, whereas a complete sequence including
user training, attaching the probes, tting the shells, wearing the headphones and running
the software lasts around 5 minutes per person.
The SafetyMeter software also provides self-test functionality in order to guarantee
that all elements – soundcard, headphones, probes and software – stay operational over
time. A system check with the probes in use is automatically required by the system
every 6 months.

12.1 Maintenance and spare parts
The following spare parts are available to buy:
uHeadphone pads
For hygienic reasons, these pads should be cleaned at regular intervals using
antiseptic wipes; when damaged they should be replaced.
uHeadphone cable
The cable can be detached from the headphones by pulling the connectors straight
out of the sockets. DO NOT screw/unscrew the headphones' sockets, as it will
damage the headphones!

12.2 Assistance
Please report SafetyMeter problems, unusual attenuation control results or unusual
system behavior to your sales contact or to:

Phonak provides a manufacturer’s limited warranty for SafetyMeter. Please ask your sales
contact for full details of this warranty.
No warranty claims will be considered if the SafetyMeter system has been subject to
abnormal wear and tear, improper handling or care, undue stress, modication, damage
caused by third parties, exposure to chemicals, immersion in water.
Changes or modications made to this equipment not expressly approved by
Phonak Communications may void the user's authority to operate the equipment.
These include:
uThere is no open internet connection. Open or activate your internet connection.
uYour proxy server is not correctly congured. In the internet update window, click on
the "Internet Options" menu and enter the proxy name and port. Optionally, a user ID
and password can be entered.
uA rewall blocking is access to the internet: add the SafetyMeter application to the
rewall’s list of exceptions.
If you do not have internet access to update the software, please inform your SafetyMeter
sales contact accordingly.

13 Misc information
13.1 Conformity to standards
SafetyMeter complies with EMC Directive 2004/108/EC and CFR 47, Part 15, Subpart B,
Paragraph 15.109.
13.2 Transportation, storage and operating conditions
Operate SafetyMeter at room temperature.
During transportation and storage of the SafetyMeter system, the temperature should
not fall below -10°C or exceed 60°C. Avoid direct sun exposure and/or water contact.
13.3 Description of symbols
This symbol indicates that this device should not be disposed of as household
waste. Please hand over your old appliance to the applicable collection point
for the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment. The correct disposal of
this product will help prevent potential negative eects on the environment and
human health.

sind verboten. Phonak übernimmt keinerlei Haftung für auftretende Probleme.
2 Rechtliche Hinweise
Der SafetyMeter ist ein System zur in-situ Verikation der akustischen Dämmwirkung, die
von einem Phonak Gehörschutz System geboten wird.
SafetyMeter bestätigt durch die Verikation die Eektivität (die sachgerechte Abdichtung
des Ohrkanals durch die Ohrschalen) von Phonak Gehörschutzsystemen.
Gründe für schlecht isolierende Gehörschutzsysteme können sein:
uUngenaues Einsetzten (Position im Ohr) der Ohrschalen durch die Benutzer. Dies kann
einfach durch eine Unterweisung "Sachgemäßes Einsetzen des Gehörschutzes" für die
Benutzer verbessert werden.
uFalsche Größe/Form. Persönlich angepasste Ohrschalen können eine falsche Form
aufweisen. Dies passiert, wenn der Ohrabdruck eine schlechte Qualität aufweist. Eine
Ohrschale, die den Test des SafetyMeters nicht besteht, sollte mit der Bitte um Ersatz,
zurückgesendet werden. Idealerweise sollte ein neuer Ohrabdruck genommen werden.

3.3 Installieren der SafetyMeter-Software
Legen Sie die CD in das CD-ROM-Laufwerk ein.
Das CD-ROM-Laufwerk startet automatisch.
Sollte dies nicht der Fall sein, gehen Sie zu "Mein Computer", führen Sie einen Doppelklick
auf das Symbol "CD/DVD" aus und einen Doppelklick auf "SafetyMeter.exe".
Klicken Sie "Nächste" und folgen Sie den Auorderungen auf dem Bildschirm, um die
Installation fertig zu stellen.
Die Installation der SafetyMeter-Software beginnt erst, nachdem Sie die SafetyMeter-
Lizenzvereinbarung gelesen und akzeptiert haben.
