is when they are driven low, or are driving low.
A "0" indicates a logic zero or low-level signal, while a "1"
represents a logic one or high-level signal.
Tables which describe jumper settings show the default position in

Preface
As a member of PHYTEC's new Add-on product family the
LCD-014-M / LCD-017-xxx PHYTEC Display Adapter is one of a
series of boards that provide additional functions and interfaces to the
standard PHYTEC Carrier Boards.
Primarily designed for PHYTEC’s new phyCARD Rapid
Development Kit family, due to the flexibility of the concept we will
use the same LCD Adapters also in conjunction with further
phyCORE-baseboards.
PHYTEC supports the display adapters in two ways:
(1) as add-ons for Rapid Development Kits which serve as a
reference and evaluation platform
(2) as insert-ready, fully functional OEM display boards, which can
be embedded directly into the user’s peripheral hardware
design.
Implementation of an OEM-able subassembly as the "core" of a
specific function or interface allows you to focus on the development
of customer specific circuitry without having to worry about standard
functions and interface circuitry.
Production-ready Board Support Packages (BSPs) and Design
Services for our hardware will further reduce your development time
and risk and allow you to focus on your product expertise. Take
advantage of PHYTEC products to shorten time-to-market, reduce
development costs, and avoid substantial design issues and risks. With
this new innovative full system solution you will be able to bring your
new ideas to market in the most timely and cost-efficient manner.

Introduction
©PHYTEC Messtechnik GmbH 2011 L-758e_1 1
1Introduction
The display adapters LCD-014-x and LCD-017-x belong to a series of
add-on modules for PHYTEC’s Single Board Computers. These add-
on modules allow easy development of complex applications with off-
the-shelf components.
PHYTEC Display Adapters LCD-014-x and LCD-017-x are
compatible to the PHYTEC Display-Interface (PDI) which consists of
two universal connectors on the PHYTEC Carrier Board. The display
data connector (40 pin FCC connector, 0,5mm pitch) combines
various interface signals like LVDS, USB, I2C, etc. required to hook
up a display and a touch screen. The display power connector (AMP
microMatch 8-188275-2) provides all supply voltages needed to
supply the display and a backlight.
Because of featuring the PDI the PHYTEC Display Adapters
LCD-014-x and LCD-017-x are interchangeable and the same SBC /
Carrier Board combination might serve for different applications just
by changing the adapter board and the software.
Figure 1 depicts the usage of the PHYTEC Display Adapters together
with the modular concept of the phyCARD Development Kit.
The PHYTEC Display Adapters LCD-014-x and LCD-017-x are
insert-ready and provide connectivity to displays of different size and
resolution, as well as to corresponding touch panels.
Precise specifications for the display populating the display adapter
can be found in the applicable datasheet.
Software support for the display adapters is included within the latest
BSPs available for the different phyCARD SBCs.

1.3 Minimum Requirements to Operate the Display
Adapters
1.3.1 PDI Power Supply Connector
Operation of the display adapters only requires supply of two input
voltages (+3.3V with a 1A load and +5V with a 2A load) and the
corresponding GND connections.
These supply pins are located at the PDI power connector X3:
LCD_3V3: X3 2
LCD_5V: X3 4, 6, 8
Connect all power input pins to your power supply and all GND pins.
Corresponding GND: X3 1, 3, 5, 7, 9
There are also pins reserved for 12V backlight supply but currently
not used.
Caution:
On a custom board we recommend connecting all available +5V input
pins and at least the matching number of GND pins to the power
supply system.
Please refer to section 3for more information.
1.3.2 PDI Data Connector
In order to drive a display at least the LVDS signals, 3V3 logic supply
voltage, the /display_enable signal and GND are needed. If the display
has touch, then you also need to connect the pins for the touch.

Connectors

2Connectors
Please note that all connections are not to exceed their expressed
maximum voltage or current. Maximum signal input values are
indicated in this manual and the corresponding display data sheets. As
damage from improper connections varies according to use and
application, it is the user's responsibility to take appropriate safety
measures to ensure that the module connections are protected from
overloading through connected peripherals.
2.1 Carrier Board Connectivity (X5, X3)
The new concept of using display adapters such as the LCD-014-x and
LCD-017-x allows to attach a large number of different displays
varying in resolution, signal level, type of the backlight, pinout, etc. to
the baseboard using always the same connectors. The new PHYTEC
Display-Interface (PDI) has been designed in order not to limit the
range of displays connectable. It consists of two universal connectors
which provide the connectivity for the display adapter:
The display data connector combines all needed low-current interface
signals.
The display power connector provides all voltages needed to supply
the display and the LED backlight.
They also allow easy adaption to customer displays.
2.1.1 Display Data Connector (X5)
The display data connector at X5 (40 pin FCC connector 0,5mm pitch)
combines various interface signals like LVDS, USB, I2C, etc. required
to hook up a display, or a front panel, as well as the low-current
supply voltage for the logic on the adapter board. Table 2 shows the
pinout with signal names, descriptions, signal level voltages (column
SL) and signal directions (column I/O).

Note:
Text in red indicates signals that are not used on the display adapters
LCD-014-x and LCD-017-x. They are included in the PDI
specification to provide more functions for a customer designed
display adapter or front panel (e.g. an integrated USB connector or
power switch). Please refer to the Carrier Board section within the
hardware manual of your phyCARD or phyCORE module to get
information how to use these signals.

The supply voltage LCD_3V3_S is always present when the carrier
board is powered up. It is intended for supplying the photo sensor,
EEPROMs, etc. It should not be used to supply a display or backlight.
Only in case of connecting low-current displays, it might be possible
to renounce the Display Power Connector.
The PWM signal at pin 10 for controlling the brightness of a display's
backlight is generated by an LED dimmer.
