Rack-and-pinionsteeringgear (i = 16.9 : 1) withhydraulicassistance.
Steering wheel longitudinally adjustable (40 mm).
Further improvement of steering precision and reduction in the turning circle (10.6 m) as com-

Rearaxle
Themulti-linkrear axleused inthe 911 Carrera(993) served asthe basisfor the further developmentin
the new911 Carrera(996). Importantconsiderationsherewereto achievefurther weightreductionwhile
preservingthe familiargood vehicledynamicproperties.
Thelongerwheelbase offered additionalpotentialfor improvementsin drivingcomfort andhandling.
The wheel suspension consists of five aluminium control arms, of which the two upper control arms
are aluminium forgings.

Removing spring strut locking devices -Carrera and GT3

General Removing spring strut locking devices
Spring strut locking devicesare installedon the
front axle of the following newvehiclesin
order to protect the vehicleduringtransport
(e.g. drivingon and off during lorrytransport):
1. Liftthe vehicle(wheelsatthe front axle
mustbe free).
Thewheelsneed not be removed.
2. Removespring strut lockirllgdevicesfrom
all springstruts. To do this, pullspring
strut locking devicesoff the springs.
RoWnewvehicleswith the option"Sports
package" P70 (manualtransmission)or
P71 (Tiptronictransmission)
911 GT3
This increasesthe groundclearanceof the
vehicle.
Testshavedemonstratedthat spring strut
lockingdevicesare notnecessaryatthe
rear axle.
The spring strut locking devices must be
removed before a test drive and before the
vehicle is handed over to the customer!
Ifthe spring strut locking devicesare not
removed,this will seriouslyimpairthe handling
behaviourandthus the drivingsafety.
Sendthe removedspring strut locking
devicesto the PorscheWarrantyTestOffice
inLudwigsburg.
Includethe spring strut locking deviceswith
the normalwarrantygoods consignment.

General
The911 GT3is availablein the road version MO02 and in a Club Sport version MO03
Thevehicle heightof both designs(MOO2and MOO3)is approx. 30 mm less thanthe
911 Carrera(996).
The911 GT3(M002 and M003) canbe visually distinguishedbyits red brake calipersandAerokit,
consistingof a front spoilerJside membersanda largerear spoiler.
Thelarge rear spoiler hasanadjustablespoilerwing.TheClubSport design(MO03)also hasa
removableroll cage.
Theroll cage includesthe spring strut supportsonthe rear axlefor stability.Thisfurther improves
precise guidanceof the rear wheels.
Important: Theadjustablespoiler is setto the lowest(horizontal)positionfor street use. Changesto
the setting -to individuallymatchthe personaldrivingstyle -are intendedonlyfor the racingtrack.
Thespoilerwing must be movedto the lowestpositionfor usein publictraffic.

Tighteningtorques that deviateor are additional
are containedin the tables of the appropriate
RepairGroupfor the 911 Carrera(996).

Adjustment work on the front and rear
axle spring struts

The front and rear axle spring strut has
a thread and a height adjusting nut No.2
for height adjustment.
The height adjusting nut No.2 is secured
against turning by the lock nut No.1.

Thestabilizerblock -No.4 -(mounting saddle
for the stabilizermount)is alsofitted onthe
thread. Thestabilizerblock can be vertically
adjustedand it is providedwith a lock nutNo.3.
This adjustment possibility is only useful for
racing. It can be usedto ensurethat enough
clearanceis availablefor the stabilizermount
evenfor deviatingvehicle heights(onlyfor
racing)andalso that the stabilizermountcan
be fitted free oftension.
Thestabilizerblock No.4 does not need to
be adjusted for the vehicleheightprescribed
for street use.

The adjustmentproceduresand valueson
the front and rear axle differ in a numberof
respectsfrom those of the 911 Carrera(996).

The suspension alignment -911 GT3 is
locatedbehindthe suspensionalignmentfor
911 Carrera(996).
Brakes -General
Bleedingand brakefluid changeis the sameas
for 911 Carrera(996).
The GT3is equippedwith 3-channelABSwithout
TC(TractionControl).
Thefasteningscrewson the front axlebrake
calipersandthe rear axlecalipersare 5 mm
longerthanthose on the 911 Carrera(996).
Brake unit
Ifthe brake unitis replaced, observe correct
allocationaccordingto the Spare Parts
Catalogue(modifiedspeed ratio andlarger
pistondiameterin the brake master cylinder)
compared with the 911 Carrera(996).
Important: Boostfactor GT3= 3.15 : 1.

Front and rear stabilizer setting
Thefront and rear stabilizerscanbe
individuallyadjusted,by meansof 5 bores
atthe front and 4 bores at the rear.
Note
Thetests and notes applyfor the streetversion
(baseversion)MOO2andfor the ClubSport
versionMOO3.
Thefront stabilizerwith26.8 x 4 mm diameter
is adjusted(fitted)to the centreposition.
Lifting platforms / test stands
Ensureclearanceof the spoiler(s)andside
memberswhendrivingonto liftingplatforms
andwheel alignmentplatforms.
Therear stabilizerwith20.7 x 2.8 mm
diameteris adjusted(fitted)to the second
softest position (secondbore / arrow).

Wheel alignment platform
It is only possible to drive onto wheel alignment
platforms if additional access ramps, for
example 959 access aids, are used. A platform
without a sloped position is unsuitable.

Whendrivingonto the brake test stand,
makesure to driveon as carefullyas possible,
especiallyduringcompression.Thishelpsto

Spoiler setting
Thespoilerwing is setto the lowest(horizontal)
positionfor street use.
Changesto the setting are onlyintendedfor the
racingtrack.
The spoiler wing must be moved to the
lowest position for use on public roads.
Racing camber values
Frontand rear racing cambervaluesshould
onlybe adjustedfor use on racingtracks.
For use on public roads, only the values
listed in Repair Group 44 are permitted.
