INTRODUCTION
The 6 in. Bench Grinder is used for hand held grinding, sharpening and
cleaning. It has a 1/3 HP motor for quiet, smooth performance. The tool rests
are adjustable as are the safety eye shields. The heavy duty cast aluminum base
is predrilled to bolt the grinder to a workbench.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and side protection
for the eyes. Eye protection equipment should comply with CSA Z94.3-07
or ANSI Z87.1 standards based on the type of work performed.
2. Wear the appropriate type of full-face shield in addition to safety googles,
as the work can create chips, abrasive or particulate matter.
3. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work materials or to
reduce the effects of tool vibration.
a. Do not wear gloves when operating a tool that can snag the material
and pull the hand into the tool.
4. Wear protective clothing designed for the work environment and tool.

5. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing and balance in the
work environment.
6. Wear the appropriate rated dust mask or respirator.
PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
Control the tool, personal movement and the work environment to avoid
personal injury or damage to the tool.
1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol
or medications.
2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become entangled with the
moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair covered or bound.
3. Do not overreach when operating the tool. Proper footing and balance
enables better control in unexpected situations.
SPECIFIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING! DO NOT let comfort or familiarity with product (gained from
repeated use) replace strict adherence to the tool safety rules. If you use
this tool unsafely or incorrectly, you can suffer serious personal injury.
1. Use the correct tool for the job. This tool was designed for a specific function.
Do not modify or alter this tool or use it for an unintended purpose.
2. Keep hands and fingers away from the grinding area. Any part of body
coming in contact with moving parts could cause injury.
3. Never use a tool with a cracked or worn grinding wheel. Change the
grinding wheel before using. Use only flanges supplied with the grinder.
4. Before using the tool on a workpiece, test the tool by running it at the highest
no-load speed for at least 60 seconds in a safe position. Stop immediately if
there is any abnormal vibration or wobbling that could indicate poor
installation of the grinding wheel. Check the tool to determine the cause.
5. Do not start the tool when the grinding wheel is touching the workpiece.
6. Never force the tool. Excessive pressure could break the tool, resulting in
damage to your workpiece or serious personal injury. If your tool runs
smoothly under no load, but does not run smoothly under load, then
excessive pressure is being used.

7. Do not allow the tool’s motor to overload and/or overheat by taking work breaks.
8. This tool will not stop moving immediately. Do not leave the tool
unattended until it has come to a complete stop.
9. Never touch the grinding wheel or workpiece during or immediately after use.
The grinding wheel or workpiece will be too hot to be touched by bare hands.
10. Clean dust and debris from beneath the grinding wheels frequently.
11. Do not stand directly in front of the machine when turning it ON. Always stand
off to the side of the machine and do not allow any part of your body to be in line
with the wheel’s path.
12. Do not grind magnesium or aluminum, as a fire may result.
13. Make sure the bench grinder is on a firm, level surface and properly secured to
avoid injury from unexpected movement. Firmly clamp or bolt the bench
grinder to a support surface to prevent slipping or sliding during the operation.
14. Do not use a grinding wheel that vibrates when used. If dressing the wheel
does not solve the vibration, replace it. Also inspect the machine for other
causes of vibration such as worn bearings or a bent shaft. Repair or
replace broken components immediately before reusing the machine.
GRINDING TOOL PRECAUTIONS
1. Only use a grinding wheel of the recommended size (see Specifications)
a. Only use a grinding wheel with the correct arbor size and shape that
matches the grinder’s spindle.
2. Ensure the grinding wheel has a clean edge. Check the grinding wheel for wear
or chipping and replace if necessary.
3. Never install more than one grinding wheel at a time unless the tool and
wheels are designed for that purpose.
4. A large amount of sparks will be created when working with a grinding
wheel. Hold the workpiece so that sparks fly away from you and other
persons or flammable materials. Have a fully charged fire extinguisher
present in the event of a fire.
5. Do not subject the grinding wheel to any lateral pressure as it may damage
the tool or cause it to kickback.

KICKBACK PRECAUTIONS
Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched or snagged workpiece caught in the
grinder. The workpiece can be ejected and inflict a serious injury on the user or
a bystander. Kickback can also damage the tool.
Kickback can be avoided by taking proper precautions:
1. Maintain a firm grip on the workpiece and position your body and arms to allow
you to resist a kickback. Kickback can propel the material in the direction of the
grinding wheel’s rotation.
2. If kickback occurs, the workpiece may impact the users or bystander’s
body, causing a serious injury.
3. Use special care when working on corners, sharp edges or flexible
material.
4. Only use grinding accessories designed for the tool.
POWER TOOL PRECAUTIONS
1. Do not allow the tool to run without load for an extended period of time, as
this will shorten its life.
2. Do not cover the air vents. Proper cooling of the motor is necessary to
ensure normal life of the tool.
3. Avoid unintentional starts. Ensure the switch is off when connecting to the
power source.
4. Disconnect the power source before installing or servicing the tool.
5. Only use accessories that are specifically designed for use with the tool.
Ensure the accessory is tightly installed.
6. After making adjustments, make sure that any adjustment devices are
securely tightened.
7. Remove adjusting keys and wrenches before turning the tool on. A wrench
or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool increases the risk
of personal injury.
8. Never force the tool. Excessive pressure could break the tool, resulting in
damage to your workpiece or serious personal injury. If your tool runs
smoothly under no load, but does not run smoothly under load, then
excessive pressure is being used.

9. Do not touch an operating motor. Motors can operate at high temperatures
and can cause a burn injury.
10. Only use an accessory that exceeds the No Load Speed rating (see
Specifications).
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
WARNING! To reduce risk of electric shock, be certain that the plug is
connected to a properly grounded receptacle.
1. Disconnect tool from power source before cleaning, servicing, changing
parts/accessories or when not in use.
2. Protect yourself against electric shocks when working on electrical
equipment. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces. There is an
increased chance of electrical shock if your body is grounded.
3. Do not expose tool to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will
increase the risk of electric shock.
4. Do not disconnect the power cord in place of using the ON/OFF switch on the
tool. This will prevent an accidental startup when the power cord is plugged
into the power supply.
a. In the event of a power failure, turn off the machine as soon as the
power is interrupted. The possibility of accidental injury could occur if
the power returns and the unit is not switched off.
5. Do not alter any parts of the tool or accessories. All parts and accessories
are designed with built-in safety features that may be compromised if
altered.
6. Make certain the power source conforms to requirements of your
equipment (see Specifications).
7. When wiring an electrically driven device, follow all electrical and safety
codes, as well as the most recent Canadian Electrical Code (CE) and
Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).
8. This device is only for use on 120 V (single phase) and is equipped with a 3-
prong grounded power supply cord and plug.
a. DO NOT remove the ground prong from the plug. This will render the
tool unsafe.

9. DO NOT use this device with a 2-prong wall receptacle.
a. Choose an available 3-prong power outlet.
b. Replace 2 prong outlet with a grounded 3-prong receptacle, installed
in accordance with the CE Code and local codes and ordinances.
WARNING! All wiring should be performed by a qualified electrician.
POWER CORD
1. Insert the power cord plug directly to the power supply whenever possible.
Use extension cords or surge protectors only when the tool's power cord
cannot reach a power supply from the work area.
a. When operating a power tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord
marked W-A or W. These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the
risk of electric shock.
b. Use in conjunction with a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). If
operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, the use of a
GFCI reduces the risk of electric shock. It is recommended that the
GFCI should have a rated residual current of 30 mA or less.
2. Do not operate this tool if the power cord is frayed or damaged as an electric
shock or surge may occur, resulting in personal injury or property damage.
a. Inspect the tool's power cord for cracks, fraying or other faults in the
insulation or plug before each use.
b. Discontinue use if a power cord feels more than comfortably warm
while operating the tool.
c. Have the power cord replaced by a qualified service technician.
3. Keep all connections dry and off the ground to reduce the risk of electric
shock. Do not touch plug with wet hands.
4. Prevent damage to the power cord by observing the following:
a. Never use the cord to carry the tool.
b. Do not pull on the cord to disconnect the plug from an outlet.
c. Keep the power cord clear of the tool and the tool's work path while in
operation. The cord should always stay behind the tool.
d. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts.

5. Do not allow people, mobile equipment or vehicles to pass over
unprotected power cords.
a. Position power cords away from traffic areas.
b. Place cords in reinforced conduits.
c. Place planks on either side of the power cord to create a protective trench.
6. Do not wrap cord around the tool as sharp edges may cut insulation or
cause cracks if wound too tight. Gently coil cord and either hang on a hook
or fasten with a device to keep cord together during storage.
UNPACKING
WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is missing. Replace the
missing part before operating. Failure to do so could result in a malfunction
and personal injury.
Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and inspect for damage.
Make sure that all items in the parts list are included.

ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION
Letter references in parenthesis (A) refer to the included Identification Key.
Dashed numbers in parenthesis (Fig. 1-1) refer to a specific point in an
illustration or image.
1. Fit the eye shield to the mount rod. Mount the left and right shield rods to the
inside of the wheel guards using hex bolts.
2. Attach the left eye shield mounting rod to the bench grinder using the
bracket, flat washer and bolt supplied.

MOUNTING THE BENCH GRINDER
An unsecured grinder may slide or ‘walk’ due to vibrations when operating. The
grinder’s base has predrilled holes to bolt the tool to a workbench or pedestal.
The ideal mounting position will be on a level flat surface capable of
withstanding the weight of the tool and vibrations it will cause.
Position the unplugged grinder in the chosen location. Test the location by
going through the motions of grinding various items (scissors, lawn mower
blades, knives, etc.) without power. Ensure there is enough clearance to work
with these types of objects during grinding.
Bolt the grinder to the workbench or pedestal once the location is chosen. Bolts
are not included.
OPERATION
WARNING! Inspect the grinding wheels before starting the machine for
visible defects such as fissures, cracks or chips. The wheel may break
apart and cause an injury. Replace damaged grinding wheels immediately
(See Care & Maintenance).
CAUTION! Keep your bench grinder clean by removing dust and grit from
working parts, the lower portion of the wheel guard assembly and the work
area surrounding the grinder. Dust and grit can damage the tool’s internal
mechanism.
ON/OFF SWITCH
The ON/OFF switch (F) is located on the front of the grinder. Press the right side
of the switch, marked with the word ‘ON’, to turn the power on. Push the left
side of the switch to turn the power off.
GRINDING WHEELS
For best grinding results and maintaining good balance, always keep the
wheel(s) properly dressed.
Never force a workpiece against a cold wheel. Use light pressure until the wheel
becomes warm.

We strongly recommend using only balanced wheels on these grinders.
Balanced wheels will add years of life to grinder bearings and arbor shaft
and eliminate the most common cause of vibration, which will yield more
accurate work.
BASIC GRINDER OPERATIONS
WARNING! Never start the tool with the operator or bystander in line with the
grinding wheel. A damaged grinding wheel could shatter and the debris may
cause an injury.
WARNING! Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields
during operation of any power tool. If the operation is dusty, wear the
appropriate protective mask.
The bench grinder is equipped with one coarse grinding wheel (36 grit) and one
medium grinding wheel (60 grit). It is the ideal tool for sharpening tools such as
wood chisels, cold chisels, planer blades, scissors, lawn mower blades, etc.
Because grinders can remove material rapidly, a freshly dressed wheel and
the amount of workpiece pressure applied to the wheel are keys to efficient
grinding. Use the following basic guidelines to aid in working metals and
avoid overheating.
1. Never force the workpiece against the grinding wheel. Pressing too hard
overheats the motor and prematurely wears down the grinding wheel.
2. Lay the workpiece against the tool rest and ease it into the grinding wheel.
Do not push the point or edge into the wheel as it may catch and the
workpiece may be pulled for the user’s grasp.
3. Always keep the workpiece constantly moving against the grinding wheel
with light pressure and even motion.
4. Keep the workpiece cool by dipping it in a container of water.
5. Always use the face of the grinding wheel with the wheel moving
downward, into the object being worked.
6. Deburring the edge is done best by using the grinder to pull burrs from the
edge across the bevel angle.
7. Do not grind using the sides of a grinding wheel.

LAWN MOWER BLADES
1. Ensure there is adequate working space to maneuver the blade.
2. Sharpen the blade’s beveled side first, then dress the other side with the
grinder or a file.
a. Remove any nicks present on the cutting edge. Rest the blade flat on the
tool rest and move the blade side to side until the edge is nick free.
b. Sharpen the bevel. Either adjust the tool rest angle to match the
blade’s bevel angle or hold the blade at the bevel angle while resting a
portion of the blade on the tool rest for added stability. Remove as
little metal as possible to attain the desired edge. Lightly dress-up the
flat backside of the blade.
c. Do not hone the lawn mower blade to a razor-like sharpness. This
increases the likelihood of nicking the blade and promotes rapid dulling.
Use a file or the bench grinder to slightly dull the cutting edge.
3. After the blade is sharp, check the blade’s balance with an appropriate
shop made jig or commercially available unit. Balance the blade by
progressively removing metal until balance is attained.
CAUTION! An unbalanced lawn mower blade may cause excessive vibration,
damaging the mower and engine shaft.
SHARPENING SCISSORS
Take the scissors apart, if possible, to make the sharpening operation easier
and safer. Remove material only from the outside surface and work from the
heavy end of the blade towards the tip. Finish the edge with a whet stone.
SHARPENING TWIST DRILL BITS
Sharpening twist drills can be a tricky operation that even some experienced
mechanics never master.
Sharpening twist bits freehand will require considerable practice and dry runs
with the grinder OFF to acquire the skill of rotating the bit while maintaining the
original cutting edge angle.
1. Set the grooved tool rest horizontal to the face of the grinding wheel.
2. Hold the drill shank between the thumb and index finger, resting the back
of the index finger on the tool rest.

3. Be sure that the cutting lip is straight across the face of the wheel before
beginning each stroke
4. When the drill contacts the wheel, push the drill shank downward and to the left
at a slight angle. At the same time, rotate the drill so the other lip is just visible.
5. Repeat this process on the other lip to sharpen the entire twist drill.
Consider using a sharpening jig if you anticipate sharpening numerous bits.
SHARPENING WOOD CHISELS & PLANE IRONS
Sharpening chisels and irons on the bench grinder will produce razor sharp
hollow ground bevels, which must be followed by honing on a whetstone.
Practice the steps below with the power off before attempting to sharpen a
chisel or plane iron.
1. The chisel cutting edge must be free of nicks and be 90° to the chisel edge.
With the tool rest flat, lightly dress the cutting edge if nicks are present or
it’s out of square.
2. Adjust the tool rest’s angle between 25 to 30 degrees in relation to the grinding
wheel’s face. Rest the chisel on the angled tool rest and move it laterally across the
face of the wheel.
3. Occasionally cool the workpiece in water to maintain its hardness.
4. Continue grinding the cutting edge and bevel until the bevel length is
roughly twice the thickness of the chisel. Remove only the material
necessary to achieve the desired bevel angle with a sharp and square
cutting edge.
5. This process produces a sharp hollow ground bevel with a small amount of
‘wire’ burr. Remove this with a final honing on a whetstone.
REFURBISHING SCREWDRIVER TIPS
Screwdriver tips often get worn or bent out of shape and must be reshaped by
grinding to perform properly.
1. Select a flat-head screw with a slot the same width as the screwdriver
blade tip.
2. Grind screwdriver tip square and remove all gaps, nicks and twists in the
screwdriver blade. Apply only light pressure to the blade while moving it
back and forth across the grinding wheel face.

3. Turn the screwdriver frequently to keep both sides parallel.
4. If ground correctly, the tip should fit completely into the screw slot with no
visible gaps.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
1. Maintain the tool with care. A tool in good condition is efficient, easier to
control and will have fewer problems.
2. Inspect the tool fittings, alignment and power supply cord periodically.
Have damaged or worn components repaired or replaced by an authorized
technician. Only use identical replacement parts when servicing.
3. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
4. Only use accessories intended for use with this tool.
5. Maintain the tool’s labels and name plates. These carry important
information. If unreadable or missing, contact Princess Auto Ltd. for
replacements.
6. Wheels should be dressed periodically to maintain grinding efficiency,
especially if they become clogged from grinding soft metals. Use a
grinding wheel dresser to restore the wheel’s original shape.
a. Dress the grinding wheel face only. Dressing the wheel sides can
cause it to become too thin for safe use.
7. Keep all parts in working order. Check to determine that the guard or other
parts will operate properly and perform their intended function.
8. A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or
replaced. Do not perform makeshift repairs.
9. Disconnect tool when changing grinding wheels.
10. Replace a cracked wheel immediately and use only the flanges supplied
with the grinder.
11. Replacement wheels must have a minimum rated speed of 3,450 RPM and
a maximum diameter of 6 in.
WARNING! Only qualified service personnel should repair the tool. An
improperly repaired tool may present a hazard to the user and/or others.

WHEEL DRESSING
A grinding wheel may become unbalanced due to irregular wear or it is loaded
with ground material. The grinding wheel must be trued and dressed.
Truing or dressing the wheel is best done using a star-wheel dresser, a silicon
carbide stick type dresser or a diamond faced dressing tool.
Dress the wheel by moving the dresser forward on the tool rest until it just
touches the highpoint on the face of the wheel, then dress the wheel by moving
the dresser back and forth across the wheel face.
Repeat this procedure until the face of the grinding wheel is clean and the
corners of the wheels are square.
CHANGING THE GRINDING WHEELS
WARNING! Use only grinding wheels rated for 3,450 RPM or higher with a
1/2 in. arbor hole and the appropriate sized bushing. Never use a grinding
wheel rated lower than 3,450 RPM or attempt to machine an undersized
wheel to fit the arbor. The grinding wheel may fragment during grinding
and cause an injury.
1. Prevent the shaft from rotating by placing a wedge between the wheel and
the tool rest.
2. Remove the three screws (Fig. 2-1) attaching the protective side cover (Fig. 2-2)
to the grinder; then remove the side cover.
3. Facing the front of the bench grinder: to replace the
wheel on the left side, turn the arbor nut (Fig. 2-3)
clockwise to loosen and counterclockwise to tighten.
4. To replace the wheel on the right side, turn
counterclockwise to loosen and clockwise to tighten.
5. Remove the arbor nut (Fig. 2-3), outer flange (Fig. 2-
4) and the old wheel.
6. Install the replacement wheel and outer flange on the
shaft. Make sure the wheel is a tight fit on the shaft.
7. Replace the arbor nut and tighten enough to drive the
wheel and prevent slippage. Excessive tightening can
cause the wheel to crack prior to or during operation. Fig. 2

8. Replace the side cover. Reinsert the three bolts and tighten the side cover
in place.
9. Adjust tool rest and spark shield guard distance from the grinding wheel.
Maintain a separation of 1/8 in. or less as the wheel diameter decreases
from use.
10. Adjust the eye shield position over the grinding wheel.
11. Rotate the wheel by hand to check free movement and proper adjustments.
Many grinding wheels use removable and adjustable arbor bushings to allow
adaptation to various machine arbor diameters. Save this bushing for future use
if not needed to install the replacement wheel.
CLEANING
CAUTION! Do not use brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products,
penetrating oils, etc., on the tool’s plastic parts. Chemicals can damage,
weaken or destroy plastic, which may result in a serious personal injury
when the tool is in use.
Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastics are susceptible to
damage from various types of commercial solvents and may be damaged by their
use. Use a clean cloth to remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, etc.
Electric tools used on fiberglass material, wallboard, spackling compounds, or
plaster are subject to accelerated wear and possible premature failure because the
fiberglass chips and groundings are highly abrasive to bearings, brushes,
commutators, etc. Consequently, we do not recommend using this tool for
extended work on these types of materials. However, if you do work with any of
these materials, it is extremely important to clean the tool using compressed air.
LUBRICATION
This tool is permanently lubricated at the factory and requires no additional
lubrication.
DISPOSAL
Recycle a tool damaged beyond repair at the appropriate facility.
Contact your local municipality for a list of disposal facilities or by-laws for

TROUBLESHOOTING
Visit a Princess Auto Ltd. location for a solution if the tool does not function
properly or parts are missing. If unable to do so, have a qualified technician
service the tool.
