TechnicalDescription
Propex Heaters are fueled by butane or propane gasandare
warm air systemsdesigned to supply oneor moreoutlets
through hotair ducting. Airfor combustion is takenfrom
outsidethevehicle,mixedwith gas andignited. Itis thenpassed
through a two stage stainlesssteelcombustionchamber and
exhaustedthroughflexiblealuminiumtube tothe outside.
Fresh airis taken in through a separateinletorifice and collects
heat offthe threesurfaces ofthe heatexchangerbeforebeing
passedthrough the ducting tothehotair outlet(s).Fresh airis
usuallytakenfrominside the cabin for maximumefficiency,
although itmaybe takenfromoutside if preferred. The
combustionside of theheater is totallysealedfrom the heating
airside andatno time canthetwomix.
Operation
(1) Check that thegas supply is switched on.
(2)Rotate the thermostatdial to zero and move the three
position switch tothe left. Thered powerlightshould
illuminate.
(3)Rotatethethermostatdialuntil the greenlight(bottomlight
on the thermostat)illuminates. The heatershould nowgo
through its ignitionsequence. The higherthethermostatdial
isset, the greaterthetemperaturewill beinthe cabinwhen
thethermostatswitches the heater off.
(4)When the ignitionsequencecommencesthefanwilloperate
on a six-secondpre-purgecycle to clean outthe burner.
(5)Afterpre-purgethe spark generatorwillautomatically cutin
andregularsparkingwill be heard forthe next six seconds
duringwhichignitionwilloccur.
NOTE:(5a) If theheaterswitches off afterthepre-purgecycle
without the spark generatorstarting,thiswill
indicate low voltage andthe heaterwill beinthe
lock-outmode. The greenlight onthe thermostat
will haveremained onandthe faultwilleither be
flatbattery or faultywiring. The unit canbe reset
byswitching offand back onatthe thermostat.

(5b)Iftheheaterswitchesoffafterthesixsecondsof
the spark generatorrunningitusuallyindicates
ignitionfailure. Check thatgasisswitchedonand
ifsothatthereisgasinthebottle.Incold
conditionsignitionfailurecouldbecausedby
frozenbutanegas.
(6) Ignition willusuallyoccurshortlyafterthe spark generator
startsanda slightdifferenceintonewillbeapparent.
(7)Whenthecabintemperaturereachesthesetleveltheunit
will switchoff;thiswillbeindicatedbythegreenlightonthe
thermostatswitchingoffbuttheredlight(toplightonthe
thermostat)will stay on.
(8) Propex Heaters are fitted witha post-purgecycleforcooling
theunitdownafteroperation. This iscontrolledbya
temperature sensorinsidetheheater which, whenactivated,
will turntheredlightgreenindicatingthattheheater will run
onthe"fanonly"modeafterithasbeenswitchedoff.The
post-purgesensormayalsobetriggeredaftertheunithas
switchedoff. This iscausedbyheatradiatingofftheheat
exchanger.
(9)Ifthethermostatswitchismovedtotheright,itwilloperate
thefanonitsownforblowingcoolair.Inthisinstancethe
redpowerlightwillturngreenandthethermostatdialwill
beoverridden.
Adjustment of Thermostat Sensitivity
TheAdjusterpresetisa hysteresiscontrolwhichcanalterthe
temperature differentialfrom 4°Cto 1/2°C. To adjust thethermo-
stat,firstpullthedialknoboffandremove case byundoingthe
screwbeneaththeknob.Thediagramoverleafshowsthe
position oftheadjuster.Formaximumsensitivityturnthe
presetfullyanticlockwise,andforminimumsensitivityturnit
clockwise. Thepresetisdesignedtobeadjustedusinga small
screwdriver. There isa smallarrowinthecentretoshowwhich
wayitisadjusted.
Thepresetisnota linearcontrolandmostoftheadjustmentis
toward theanticlockwiseendstop.

Maintenance
Theheatersandtheircontrolsaredesignedtorequireno
periodicservicingassuch,howeverwedorecommendthatthe
safetycheckslistedbelowarecarriedout.Atveryleasta pre-
seasoncheckshouldbecarriedoutontheheaterinstallationas
wellasallothergasappliancesfitted.Theheatershouldnotbe
leftforlongperiodswithoutuse.Werecommendthattheheater
isperiodicallyswitchedonforshortperiodsthroughoutthe
summer.
Safety
(1)UseButane(Calor)gasat28mbarorPropaneat37mbar
only.Othergasesorpressuresarenotacceptableandmay
behazardous.Theuseofadjustabletypegasregulatorsis
notpermissible.
(2)Especiallywherea heaterisinstalledinsidea vehicle,check
flexibleexhaust/combustioninletpipesregularlyforsplits,
crushing, corrosionorotherdamage.
(3)Thegassupplylineshouldbecheckedforsecurityandall
jointsleaktestedwhilstunderpressureusingsoapywateror
aproprietaryleakdetectingsolutionatregularintervals.
(4)Ifexhaustfumesaredetectedinsidethevehiclefromheater
turnoffimmediately.Donotuseuntilcausehasbeen
determined.
