The Workhorse 2-Burner Farrier and Blacksmithing Kit is an ideal knife
forging tool. It features a push-button ignition and adjustable flame for
fine heat control. It is fueled with propane for a max. temperature rating
of 1,300°C.
WARNING! Read and understand all instructions
before using this tool. The operator must follow
basic precautions to reduce the risk of personal
injury and/or damage to the equipment.
Keep this manual for safety warnings, precautions, operating or inspection
and maintenance instructions.
1. Operate in a safe work environment. Keep your work area clean, well-
lit and free of distractions. Place lights so you are not working in a
shadow.
2. Keep anyone not wearing the appropriate safety equipment away
from the work area.
3. Store tools properly in a safe and dry location. Keep tools out of the
reach of children.
4. Do not install or use in the presence of flammable gases, dust or
liquids.
5. Install in a location without nearby wood or fabric due to the high
temperature generated.
5.1 Clear the floor and walls of an area of all combustible and/or
flammable materials.
5.2 Cover any combustible material with fire resistant covers or
shields, if it cannot be removed.
6. Have a fire extinguisher available for immediate use. Use a dry chemical
fire extinguisher for Types A, B and C.
7. Install the tool in a low-traffic area to prevent potential burn injuries.

WARNING! Wear personal protective equipment
approved by the Canadian Standards Association
(CSA) or American National Standards Institute
(ANSI).
1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and side
protection for the eyes. Eye protection equipment should comply
with CSA Z94.3-07 or ANSI Z87.1 standards based on the type of work
performed.
2. Wear the appropriate type of full-face shield in addition to safety
googles, as the work can create molten, acid or chemical splashes.
3. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work materials or
to reduce the effects of tool vibration.
4. Wear protective clothing designed for the work environment and
tool.
4.1 Wear a leather apron or jacket, leather welding gloves and full
foot protection. Choose clothing fabrics that resist sparks, heat,
flames and splashes of molten material. Artificial fabrics may
burn and melt, resulting in a more severe injury.
4.2 Do not wear clothes or protective gear that are frayed, oily or
greasy as they may ignite from the heat.
4.3 Do not wear clothing that can hold hot debris or sparks such as
pant cuffs, shirt pockets or boots. Choose clothing that has flaps
over pockets or wear clothing to cover the openings such as pant
legs over the boots or an apron over the shirt.
5. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing and balance
in the work environment.
6. Wear steel toe footwear or steel toe caps to prevent a foot injury
from falling objects.
7. Wear a NIOSH approved respirator when working on materials that
produce hazardous fumes, dust or particulate matter.

Control the tool, personal movement and the work environment to avoid
personal injury or damage to the tool.
1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence of drugs,
alcohol or medications.
2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become entangled with the
moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair covered or bound.
3. Do not overreach when operating the tool. Proper footing and balance
enables better control in unexpected situations.
4. Do not wear any personal grooming products that are flammable,
such as hair preparations, perfume or cologne with an alcohol base.
5. Remove any combustibles, such as butane lighters or matches, from
your person. Heat may light the matches or ignite leaking lighter fuel.
WARNING! DO NOT let comfort or familiarity with
product (gained from repeated use) replace strict
adherence to the tool safety rules. If you use this
tool unsafely or incorrectly, you can suffer serious
personal injury.
1. Use the correct tool for the job. This tool was designed for a specific
function. Do not modify or alter this tool or use it for an unintended
purpose.
2. Do not use the tool if any parts are damaged, broken or misplaced.
Repair or replace the parts.
3. Do not move, handle or service while hot or burning. Do not attach or
remove a hot or operating tool from the propane tank. The hot tool
can cause a severe burn injury. Allow the tool to cool before handling.
4. Use only propane gas. Do not use liquid propane.
5. Before connecting the tool to the propane tank, make sure the tool
regulator knob is in the OFF position. Always connect and light the
tool in areas free of open flames.

6. Only use the hose and regulator assembly provided with the tool.
Inspect the hose assembly before each use. If there is excessive
abrasion or wear, or the hose is cut, replace the hose before using the
tool again. The hose and regulator must be protected from damage.
7. Do not use if tool is wet or was immersed in water. This will reduce
the effectiveness of the insulation. Have a service technician inspect
the forge and control system before using it again.
WARNING! If at any time a gas odour is detected,
immediately discontinue operation until the source
of gas has been located and corrected.
WARNING! Stop working and move to a location with
ventilation if your eyes, nose or throat become
irritated. This indicates the ventilation is not
adequate to remove the fumes. Do not resume
working until the ventilation is improved and the
discomfort ceases. Seek medical attention if the
symptoms do not diminish or if the you experiences
nausea, dizziness or malaise.
1. Only work in a confined space if the area is well ventilated or while
wearing a respirator or an air-supplied respirator.
2. The area must be well ventilated. Provide a minimum opening of 1 sq. ft.
(0.093 m2) near the floor and 1 sq. ft. (0.093 m2) near the ceiling.
WARNING! Improper handling or maintenance of
compressed gas cylinders and regulators can result
in serious injury or death. Do not use a cylinder or
its contents for anything other than its intended
use.
Consult the safety instructions on the cylinder or provided by your gas
supplier.
1. Do not deface or alter the name,number or other markings on a
cylinder. Do not connect a regulator to a cylinder that contains a gas that
the regulator was not designed to handle.

2. Do not expose a cylinder to excessive heat, sparks, slag, flame or any
other heat source.
3. Always change a cylinder carefully to prevent leaks and damage to
the cylinder’s walls, valve or safety devices.
4. Gases in the cylinder are under pressure. Protect the cylinder from
bumps, falls, falling objects and harsh weather. A punctured cylinder
under pressure can become a lethal projectile. If a cylinder is
punctured, do not approach until all pressure is released.
4.1 Protect the valve and regulator. Damage to either can result in
regulator’s explosive ejection from the cylinder.
5. Always secure a gas cylinder in a vertical position
5.1 Away from areas where they may be struck or subjected to
physical damage.
6. Do not use a wrench or hammer to open a cylinder valve that cannot
be opened by hand. Notify your supplier for instructions.
7. Do not modify or exchange gas cylinder fittings.
8. Close the cylinder valve and immediately remove the faulty regulator
from service for repair, if any of the following conditions exist:
8.1 Gas leaks externally.
8.2 Delivery pressure continues to rise with the downstream valve
closed.
9. Do not attempt to make regulator repairs. Send faulty regulators to
the manufacturer's designated repair centre.
10. Compressed gas cylinders must not be located in a confined space
with the person welding to prevent the possibility of leaks displacing
the oxygen.
WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is
missing. Replace the missing part before
operating. Failure to do so could result in a
malfunction and personal injury.
Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and inspect for damage.
Make sure that all items in the Identification Key are included.

IMPORTANT! Consult and follow municipal
regulations before installing.
WARNING! Install at least one metre from all walls
or make sure the walls are constructed of fire brick
or a similar heat resistant material. Wood and non-
heat resistant structures can ignite.
1. Bolt to a steel workbench or a bench constructed with fire brick
capable of handling the generated heat (see Specifications).
2. The opening must face away from all structures, as heat and flame
may escape.
2.1 This also allows enough room for easy insertion and removal of
the heated metal blank.
3. The location must have sufficient ventilation to remove fumes and to
provide enough air to allow combustion.
3.1 Do not position in such a manner that the breeze carries the
fumes towards you. Position it so there is a cross breeze.

3.2 Install under an exhaust hood
or duct if possible.
DANGER! Only use gas-rated
thread sealant tape (yellow
colour) for gas connections.

to leak and that can result in a
fire or explosion
1. Remove the screws from the top of the unit
(Fig. 1-1).
2. Fit the burner (C) gas exhaust pipes into the
openings (Fig. 2).
3. Push down until the pipes push through the
insulation (Fig. 3).
4. Replace the screws and fasten tightly.
5. The back of the regulator (H) identifies each
port (Fig. 4). Wrap gas-rated sealant tape on
the following three connections before
screwing them into place.
5.1 Screw the pressure gauge into the
GAUGE port (Fig. 4-3).
5.2 Screw the gas hose into the OUT port
(Fig. 4-1).
5.3 Screw the cylinder connector into the IN
port (Fig. 4-2).
6. Make sure that the propane tank
valve and the ball valve are both
closed before proceeding.

7. Screw the gas hose’s (F) gas
compression coupler to the ball valve
on the burner unit (Fig. 5).
8. Screw the cylinder connector’s gas
compression coupler into the propane
tank (Fig. 6).
WARNING! Clear the
installation location of all
combustible materials to
avoid a fire. Flames and heat
may issue from the access
opening.
WARNING! Shut the propane
cylinder’s valve off if you smell gas and
open windows and doors to ventilate the area.
Leaking propane may ignite and result in a fire or
explosion.
1. Slowly open the cylinder valve.
2. Set the flow rate on the regulator to approximately 2 to 3 PSI.
3. Close the cylinder valve and pay attention to the needle indicator on
the pressure gauge (D) and wait 15 minutes. If the needle drops away
towards zero, there is a gas leak.
4. After confirming there is a loss of gas, check all connectors and
clamps for leakage by brushing or spraying with soapy water. Bubbles
will appear at the leakage point.
5. Tighten clamps or fittings to eliminate gas leakage. Replace the
clamps and fittings if this fails to solve the problem.
WARNING! Shut the gas off if it fails to ignite
after a few seconds to avoid an explosion or
uncontrolled fire. Allow the gas to disperse
before attempting to ignite the forge again.
