MODELS 2004 & 2008
DUGAN AUTOMATIC MIXERS
INSTALLATION & OPERATION MANUAL
The Protech Audio Models 2004.2008 Automatic Micro-
phone Mixers are designed to be the best operating, most
transparent auto-mixers, for rental and portable applica-
tions as ell as small venues. Both the 2004 and 2008
feature patented adaptive proportional gain sharing
control circuitry designed by Dan Dugan, the inventor
of automatic mixing. This operating system results in the
best, most transparent automatic mixing to be found
any here. Unlike gated mixers, or quasi-Dugan mixers,
the 2004 and 2008 operate on an elegantly simple prin-
ciple; each individual input channel is attenuated by an
amount, in dB, equal to the difference, in dB, bet een that
channel's level and the sum of all channel levels. The levels
are varied on a continuous basis, ith no on-off actions, or
abrupt gain changes.
The 2008 features 8 s itchable microphone/line level
inputs. The model 2004 features 4 similar inputs. T o
units may be linked together to create up to 16 inputs.
Both units feature a unique orks-in-a-dra er construc-
t io n. Access to al l s itches and push-on jumpers used
to configure various features, is achieved by loosening
the t o thumbscre s located on each side of the front
panel, and sliding the entire electronics out of the chassis.
This easy access allo s complete reconfiguration in just
minutes.
In addition to the input mode (mic/line) s itch located at
each input, the gain of each input is configurable, via a
push-on jumper, to allo superior signal-to-noise opera-
tion. Moving the jumper over one pin changes the input
gain from 30dB to 50dB.
A bi-color LED is used to indicate signal presence and clip
threshold. Unlike other units, the clip indicator on the
Model 2008 indicates clipping of the summing buss, not
just an input, since it is possible to clip a summing bus,
ithout clipping an input.
Internal 15 volt phantom po er is selected, on a channel-
by-channel basis, via a push-on jumper. When the input
mode slide s itch is placed in the line position,
phantompo er ill automatically be disconnected, pre-
venting damage to line level devices.
The Models 2004 and 2008 also feature assignable group
mute function. Each input may be assigned to the mute
buss via an eight position DIP s itch. Turning on a given
s itch ill assign that channel to the group mute.
Grounding the group mute control pin ill mute the as-
signed channels.
The output level of the automixers may be controlled via
the front panel output potentiometer, or, assigned to a
remote potentiometer, via an on-board slide s itch.
Both units have been designed ith the operator in mind.
Control features allo the operator to attend to other
functions, ithout the need to continuously "ride gain".

INSTALLATION
The Model (2004 o 2008) has been shipped f om the
facto y with all inputs set fo mic ophone level ope ation,
and the inte nal 15 volt phantom powe enabled on each
input.
If line level ope ation is equi ed on some inputs, the
following steps a e equi ed.
Mount the Model (2004/2008) in a suitable ack.
UNPLUGGING THE ELECTRONICS
Loosen the two thumbsc ews, located on each side of the
f ont panel (see page 3) half-way.
Unplug the elect onic section f om the chassis.
Set the app op iate input mode switches (see page 3) to
line level. Doing so will automatically disconnect the phan-
tom powe .
Set the app op iate g oup mute switch position(s) to "ON"
(see page 3).
Slide the elect onics section back into the chassis.
Place fo efinge s on the top of the f ont panel, and thumbs
on bottom of f ont panel. Apply slight p essu e with thumbs
to aise ea of elect onics section, until it seats p ope ly
into chassis connecto s. Push elect onics section in until
f ont panel is flush with mounting ea s.
Tighten thumbsc ews.
Wi e inputs and outputs using two-conducto shielded
cable.
Page 2 6/01
Set the output pot to 3:00 position.
While someone speaks into each mic ophone, adjust the
co esponding input pot until the desi ed output level is
achieved. Repeat fo each input.
If high output level mic ophones (Condense Mics) a e to be
used, it may be desi ous to lowe the input p eamplifie
stage to 30dB of gain. See page 3 fo location of push-on
jumpe s fo each input channel.
The Signal P esence/Clip indicato tu ns g een when the
input summing bus eaches -15dB, and tu ns ed when the
bus eaches +15dB.
The alignment is now completed. The Model (2004/2008)
will ide gain on each input, in simila fashion to an expe i-
enced sound system ope ato , but much faste .
ALIGNMENT
LINKING
Two pieces of the Model (2004/2008) may be linked to-
gethe , to p ovide up to 16 inputs, to a common output.
The e is a Maste /Slave switch on the elect onic section PC
assembly (see page 3). Follow the inst uctions fo unplug-
ging the elect onics.
Set the Maste /Slave slide switch, on the unit to be desig-
nated "Slave", to the slave position.
Plug the elect onics section back into the chassis.
Wi e the 6 "LINK" connections as shown on page 3.
Raising o lowe ing the output pot, on the unit designated
"Maste ", will now cont ol all 16 inputs channels.
Follow the inst uctions fo unplugging the elect onics.
Set the slide switch labeled "REM VOL", to the "ON"
position.
Plug the elect onics section back into the chassis.
Wi e the 3 "REMOTE CONTROL" connections as shown
on page 3.
Raising o lowe ing the emote pot, will now cont ol the
output level.

PHANTOM POWER
No mally set to the "GND ON" position.
One push-on ed jumpe fo each input. See page 3 fo
locations. Set input mode switch to "LINE" position auto-
matically disconnects phantom powe f om that input.
GROUP MUTE
The 4/8 position DIP (see page 3) switch assigns individual
inputs to the g oup mute bus. G ounding the g oup mute
sc ew, on the ea ba ie st ip, activates the g oup mute. All
sc ew connections labeled "SH", a e g ound.
