Word burning, or “Pyrography” describes the technique used in the ancient art of
‘drawing with re’. Originally practiced throughout the world using hot pokes, the
results were often rough and difcult to achieve. Over time more precise tools
were developed that allowed for more skillful and intricate designs. Now, with this
Performance Tool® Wood Burning Kit, the best tools available for Pyrography are
in your hands to create, design and decorate intricate and ornate designs.
INTRODUCTION
WARNINGS

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Set up a safe work area. You can tape the iron holder to a piece of
ceramic tile or other heavy base for added stability, to help prevent tipping
over as well as protecting any surfaces where working.
2. Use a glass or metal dish or tray to place hot tips or other pieces while
cooling. It is suggested that you allow the unit to completely cool before
changing tips. If not possible, use needle nose pliers or the like to
change tips without touching the hot tips.
WARNINGS
1. Be sure tool is set to “0” power setting before plugging in and turning on
unit. Unplug unit when nished and stepping away.
2. Allow unit to cool completely before storing, changing tips or otherwise
handling the tip.
3. Rest the tip on the stand during breaks or when nished using.
4. Do not leave tool unsupervised or within the reach of children or un-
trained users.
5. Do not expose tool to water or moisture. Use only indoors.
6. Do not touch the tip or cooling ns while hot, or you may be burned.
7. Use only in well ventilated areas. Do not use while eating or drinking.
8. Always wash your hands after using this tool.
9. Wear proper protective breathing masks as some woods may contain
adhesives that emit dangerous fumes when burned.
WARNING: NEVER CHANGE A HOT TIP WITH YOUR FINGERS.
3. Protect your work surface with aluminum foil, a high temperature ber
board or a piece of plywood.
4. Familiarize yourself with the unit and various tips and accessories.
5. Plug in your wood burner and allow it a few minutes to reach operating
temperature.
6. Hold the wood burner like a pencil. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE
METAL PARTS. Touch only the handle.
7. Practice by writing your name, then pull the point carefully towards you
until you are comfortable with the operation. You can adjust the depth/
richness of the burn depending on how long you leave the tip in place and
how much pressure is applied.
8. Experiment on a practice surface with various speeds and different tips
until you are comfortable enough to begin your pyrography project.

OPERATING THE TIPS

1. Universal tip: Multi-purpose tip that works at various angles for creating
lines of varying widths.
2. Dot tip: Use to make dots of various sizes and depths. Make light
surface touches for ne dots. Hold the tip on the surface for longer
periods of time to create deeper spots or holes.
3. Groove tip: Use to burn grooves at various depths. Move more slowly
across your work to make deeper grooves. Also for small and intricate
dots, circles, and cursive writing.
4. Calligraphy tip: Mimics the shape of a calligraphy pen. Do not allow the
iron to rotate in your hand as you trace calligraphy letters.
5. Shading tip: Tapered for use in several positions to create light or dark
shading. Can also be used for transferring patterns:
a. Print or make a copy of your pattern.
b. Place the copy face down on your project surface.
c. Attach shading tip and turn burner on low. Allow the tip to heat to
working temperature.
d.
Slowly rub the pattern transfer tip on the back of the pattern in a
circular motion to transfer the printed pattern to your project surface.
e. You can now burn your pattern into your project surface.
6.
Branding tips:
Includes 10 different patterns for variety of design work.
Apply these tips vertically on your project surface in a stamping motion,
moving the tip straight up and down, repeating as desired
.
7.
Stencil cutting tip: Use to cut craft pattern stencils in plastic stencil
materials.
8. Stripes tip: Apply and pull along working area to create stripes. Vary the
depth and/or number of lines by adjusting the angle when applying.
9. Knife tip: Use with the chuck, like a standard hobby knife. Insert the
blade into the chuck then insert the threaded chuck onto the wood
burner. Use to cut foam, rope, or other soft rigid materials.
10. Soldering iron tip (not shown): Use this tip to operate your wood
burner as a standard soldering iron. Can also be used as a dot tip.
11. Flow tip (not shown): Use this rounded end tip to burn curves,
dots, and ne details. Works well for cursive writing and dot shading
techniques.
NOTE: Keep tips clean for lasting performance. Carbon build up may occur
over time. Use a ne grit sandpaper or wire brush to clean tips as needed.
OPERATING THE TIPS

ADDING COLOR
When your pyrography project is nished you can color for that nishing
touch. Clean the surface to remove any oils, grease or ngerprints, then use
the following paints or nishes as desired:
• Varnish
• Acrylic paint thinned with water
• Colored glazing gels
• Watercolors
• Caulks
• Wood stains/nishes
• Shoe polish
How to apply: Soft bristle paintbrushes, sponges, soft cloth or similar
applicator. Thin paints/nishes to avoid lling in or covering up ne detail
work. Lightly sand rough edges with ne sandpaper as needed.
DESIGNS
You can use almost anything from clip art, line drawings, color pages and
more to transfer designs from paper to use with wood burning.
• Resize the design with a printer or copier as needed
• Use tools such as tracing paper, carbon paper a ruler, pencil and masking
tape to transfer your design to the surface you will burn
• Once transferred, lightly trace the design with a pen or pencil and make
sure the pattern is sketched how you want it
• Use the wood burner to etch your pattern.
SURFACES
Soft woods such as beech, birch, hornbeam or sycamore are most popular
and available your local craft store. Smooth and light grains work best as
opposed to dark hardwoods. Leather, thick cardstock, wax and cork are
also good. Avoid woods high in sap, veneers, thin plywood, pressure treated
or tropical woods.

WARNING: Tips are sharp. Use caution when handling.
1. To replace tip, turn unit off, unplug and be sure unit is completely cool.
2. Firmly grasp the current tip and turn counterclockwise.
3. Reposition the desired tip and turn clockwise to tighten.
CAUTION: Tips get extremely hot. DO NOT change tips while unit is on,
plugged in or hot. If this is unavoidable, use needle nose pliers to hold,
remove and replace the tip.
