Module Overview
The RIO-DRV communications module is used to connect applications written for
Allen-Bradley remote I/O drives to Allen-BradleyEthernet drives. Typical applications
for this module include replacingobsolete remote I/O drives with newer Ethernet drives.
For applications where multiple drives exist ona single Remote I/O network, a single
AN-X2 gatewaycan be used to provide data for up to four Ethernet/IP drives.
You must thoroughlyunderstandthe application and the details of the operation of the
remote I/O drive beingreplaced and the target Ethernet drive. In particular, it may be
necessary to make some changes to the application, dependingon the operation of the
Ethernet drive.
Remote I/O networkfeatures:
• emulates up to 4 racks, with racknumbers from 1 to 76 octal, with any
combination of partial racks
• supports all remote I/O baud rates
The AN-X2-ABRIO-DRV module has a web interface for configuration, for monitoring
logs, and for performing other administrative functions. You cancommunicate with the
module usinganystandard web browser such as Internet Explorer.
Themodule firmware can be updated over Ethernet usingthe web interface. Refer to
page 41 for details.

HardwareFeatures
Themodule has:
LEDs to indicate the status of the connection to theEthernet (100 and Link/Act)
a LED to indicate the module s internal state (SYS orMS)
a LED to indicate the state of communications on the Remote I/O network (NET or
NS)
an Ethernet connector
a power connector
a 3-pin Phoenix connector to connect to the remote I/O network
A watchdogtimer is implemented in the module s hardware. If the firmware does not
kickthe watchdogwithin the timeout period the watchdogtimes out andplaces the
module intoa safe fatal failure state.
A jabber inhibit timer is implemented in the module shardware. If the network
transmitter is on longer than 150% of the longest networkframe time, thetransmitter is
forced off and the module is placed into a safe fatal failurestate.

Identifying the AN-X2 versus the Original AN-X
Thelabel on the bottomtoward the front says AN-X2.
There is a slot at the backfor the microSD card.
When initiallypoweredup:
• AN-X2 railroads (alternates) SYS (or MS) and NET (or NS) LEDs green as
it starts up
• without the Ethernet cable attached, the Ethernet 10/100 (upper) LED is on
for AN-X2 (both Ethernet LEDs are off for the original AN-X)
Comparisons with the Original AN-X
AN-X2 modules have a microSD card for storage of firmware and configuration data.
You no longer needAnxInit; everythingcan be done from the web interface or byediting
files on the microSD card.
Operationis simplified, there are production and maintenance modes only.
TheAN-X2 requires firmware version 4 and above.
TheAN-X2 uses the same hardware interfaceto automation networks.
There are no differences for applications once Ethernetand firmware have been
configured.
Using the MicroSD Card
TheAN-X2 microSD card stores configuration data and firmware.
Theare no restrictions on the size or speed of the card.The format must be FAT-16 or
FAT-32.
An adapter is providedso you can insert the microSD card in an SD slot in your
computer.
Thecard must be present while the AN-X2 is running.
WARNING! Do not remove the card while theAN-X2 is powered on!
If the AN-X2 is inaccessible fromEthernet because of its settings, you can removethe
card and edit the file config.txt. Referto page 12 for details.
Insert the card in the slot at the backof the AN-X2, with the pins facingup.
WARNING! Ifyou remove the card to edit the configuration file, push the card in
straight or the card might fall inside the case and you will have to
disassemble the AN-X2 to retrieve it .

AN-X2 Modesof Operation
There aretwo AN-X2 modes of operation:
Maintenance mode. The AN-X2 runs the maintenancefirmware at startup.
It performs diagnostics (memorytests, etc), and copies anychanges fromthe
microSD card. If there are no errors, it starts the AN-X2 in production mode.
Production mode. This is the normal runtimemode of operation.

Installation
Prevent ElectrostaticDischarge
Themodule is sensitive to electrostatic discharge.
WARNING! Electrostatic discharge candamage integrated circuits or
semiconductors. Follow these guidelines whenyou handle the module:
Touch a grounded object todischarge staticpotential
Do not touch the connector pins
Power
AN-X requires DC power input of anywhere from12 to 24 VDC
Left to right the pins on thepower connector are chassis ground, negative voltageand
positive voltage. Pin 1 is closest tothe Ethernet connector.
Thechassis ground should be connected.
Power consumption internallyis 200 mA @ 12VDC or 100 mA @ 24VDC.
Thepart number for the power connector is Phoenix MSTB 2.5/3-ST-5.08
Cabling and Termination
Follow Allen-Bradleycablingrecommendations for remote I/O. Refer to Approved
Vendor List for DH, DH+, DH-485, and Remote I/O Cables, publication ICCG-2.2,
February1996.
On the AN-X module, the remote I/O connections should be line 1, shield, line 2.

Line 1 on the AN-X is closest to the power connector.
Checkthe wiringto ensure that line 1 on the AN-X is connected to line 1 on the PLC, and
so on.
Terminate bothends of a remote I/O networkbyusingexternal resistors attached to the
physical ends of the network. There should be two and onlytwo terminators on the
network.
Use 82 ohmresistors if thenetworkoperates at 230.4 kbps or if the networkoperates at
57.6 kbps or 115.2 kbps and none of the devices in thetable below are present. The
maximumnumber of physical devices on the network is 32.
Use 150 ohmresistors if the networkcontains anyof the devices inthe tablebelow, or if
the networkoperates at 57.6 kbps or 115.2 kbps and you do not require the network to
support more than 16 physical devices.

Ethernet Cabling
AN-X has a standard RJ-45 connector for connectingto Ethernet.
Ifyou are connecting to the AN-X through a router or switch, use a standard Ethernet
cable.
Ifyou are connectingdirectly to the AN-X module, usea crossover cable.
SoftwareInstallation
There is no required software installationfor the AN-X2-ABDHRIO-DRV. All
configuration can be done using the web interface.
CE Installations
Ifyou are installingthe AN-X2 in a location whichrequires CE, install the following
ferrites or their equivalents on the cables:
Steward 28A2024-0A2 on Ethernet cable close to module, one loop
Steward 28A2024-0A2 on power cable
Steward 28A2025-0A2 on DH+/RIOCable

Ethernet Configuration
Before you can use the AN-X2-ABDHRIO, you must configure its networkproperties on
Ethernet.
Initial Ethernet Configuration
AN-X can be configured:
• to use a static (unchanging) IP address
• to obtain its IP address from a DHCP server
• to use the fixed link-local address 169.254.42.84
AN-X modules areshippedwith the link-local address 169.254.42.84.
Unless you have control of the DHCP server, in most applications you will assignthe
AN-X a static IP address. Otherwise the DHCP server mayassign a different IPaddress
each time AN-X powers up, and anysoftware that accesses the AN-X module would
have to be reconfigured.
Ifyou are usingmultiple AN-X modules, connect and configure oneat a time, since
initiallytheywill all be setto the same link-local IP address.
IMPORTANT! Ifyou are connectingAN-X to an existingEthernet network, consult the
networkadministrator to obtain information about how you should
configure AN-X or to obtain a static IP address for AN-X.
You configure the Ethernetproperties usingthe web interface.
Start a web browser and enter the address 169.254.42.84
TIP TheAN-X2 must be on the same subnet as the computer to use the
link-local IP address. It cannot be connected through a router.
TIP Themodule is shipped configured for use with the Data HighwayPlus
firmware. The initial screen you see will be slightlydifferent fromthat
shown below.
Select Administration/AN-X Configuration.

The AN-X2 Configuration page appears.
At the top thescreen shows the serial number and MAC address of the AN-X being
configured.
Checkeither DHCP or Static.

DHCP
If the AN-X2 finds a DHCP server on the network, it obtains an IP address and other
networkparameters (netmaskand default gateway) from the DHCP server.
To find the address assigned, you have to lookat the DHCP server.
When you submit the changes, if the AN-X2 does not find a DHCP server,it reverts to
the default linklocal address 169.254.42.84 and repeatedlyflashes the SYS (or MS) LED
3 times red followed bya pause.
Static IP Address
Ifyou select static IP address, enter:
the IP address forthe AN-X.
the netmaskfor the AN-X
the default gatewayfor your network.
You must enter a valid default gatewayaddress even if there is no device atthe gateway
address onthe network.
Hostname
Enter a Hostname for theAN-X2. This name is used internallybyAN-X and maybe
used to identifythe AN-X if you have a DNS server onyour network. Thename can be
from1 to 30 characters long
Firmware
Selectthe firmware the AN-X is to load fromthe list provided. AN-X builds the list from
the firmware files on the microSD card that are compatible with the AN-X hardware.
Thefirmware file for driveoperation is AN-X2-AB-DRV-04
Submitting the Configuration
Once you have entered all required parameters, clickSUBMIT to write the configuration
to the file config.txt on the microSD card. The changes do not take effect until the AN-X
restarts.
Thefollowingpage appears when you clickSUBMIT.

Click Continue to restart the AN-X2, then wait until the AN-X has completelyrestarted
before continuing.
Ifyou have changed the IP address, you will have to enter the new IP address in the
browser s address field.
Reconfiguring an AN-X from an UnknownState
It sometimes happens that an AN-X has been previouslyconfigured with an IP address
that causes it to be inaccessible on the current Ethernet networkor the IP address is
unknown.
Remove the microSD card and edit the file config.txt usinga text editor suchas Windows
Notepadto set the AN-X2 to the desired configuration.
The Configuration File
TheEthernet configuration and the name of the production firmware fileto loadare
stored in the file config.txton the microSD card.
Thefile config.txt is a textfile that contains the Ethernet configuration and the name of
the firmware file to load.
When you performthe Administration/AN-X Configuration command from the web
interface,it writes the results to config.txt.
Each line consists of a keyword followed bya colon and then a value.

Ifyou edit the file and AN-X2 finds an error duringstartup, it flashes an error code on the
SYS (or MS) LED, see page 39.
