1.1 Overview
Congratulations on the purchaseof your RayPilot 650autopilot
controlunitfromRaymarine.WehavedevelopedtheRayPilot650to
integrate simplified controls witha sophisticated processor tobring
yousuperbsteering,no matterwhat the conditions.The totally
waterproof control unit has features such as:
•an illuminated keypad, which takesthe guessworkout of
night-timeuse
•a rotarycourse knobwhich allows youto make accurate course
changes by aslittle as 1°
•a large easy to read display that provides youwith graphic
representationsof rudderangle, cross track error andmuch more
The RayPilot650 hasthese basic operatingmodes:
•Standbymode:autopilot off
•Automode: autopilotengaged and locked ontoa heading
•Navigator(Track)mode: autopilot on and maintaining a track
betweentwo waypointscreated on a navigation system
•WindVanemode:autopilotonandmaintainingacourserelative
to an apparent wind angle
•PowerSteermode: allows full control ofthe boat via thecourse
change knob
•Calibrationmode:soyoucanadjusttheautopilotsystemtogive
optimumperformanceonyourboat

1 Introduction
The RayPilot 650 is SeaTalk™compatible, allowing it to share
informationwithotherSeaTalkinstruments.Thisbecomesusefulfor
someautomaticadjustmentsmade by the autopilot. For example,
whentheRayPilotisconnected to a speedinstrument, the speed gain
link allows the RayPilot to adjust the amount of rudder applied
according tothe speed ofthe boat.
When connected to a SeaTalk navigation aid or chart plotter via its
built-in interface, the RayPilot 650 will track to your waypoint with
amazing accuracy.
The RayPilot 650 system can be expanded andenhanced with a
selection of options andaccessories available from yourRaymarine
dealer. These include: further full function stations, a hand-held
controlunit,a joystickpowersteeringlever oranauxiliaryalarm.
SeaTalk and NMEA compatibility
The RayPilot 650control unit is SeaTalk compatible, so it canshare
datatransmittedfromotherRaymarine SeaTalk instruments:
•wind information from awind instrument can beused for
wind vane steering without the need to install a separate vane
•trackinformation,fromanavigator,canprovidewaypointcontrol
fromtheautopilot
•boat speed from aspeed instrument can provide optimumtrack
keepingperformance
•SeaTalkcompatibilityalsoallowsadditionalfixedandhand-held
autopilot control unitsto be easilyconnected at secondary
steeringand control positions
If the RayPilot 650 is used as partof a course computer system, you
can connect NMEA 0183 transmitting equipmentto the ports on the
course computer. With an optional SeaTalk/NMEA interface (part
number: E85001), you can also connect NMEA 0183 equipmentto
the SeaTalk ports on the RayPilot 650.
EMC conformance
All Raymarine equipment and accessories aredesigned to thebest
industrystandards for use in the recreational marine environment.

YourRaymarine autopilotwilladd a new dimensionto your boating
enjoyment. However, it is the skipper’s responsibility to ensure the
safety ofthe boat atall times by following these basicrules:
•Ensure that someoneis present at the helm ATALL TIMES, to
take manual control in anemergency.
•Make sure thatall crew members know how to disengagethe
autopilot.
•Regularlycheckforotherboatsandanyobstaclesto navigation–
nomatterhowcleartheseamayappear,adangeroussituationcan
developrapidly.
•Maintain an accurate recordof the boat’s positionbyusing either
anavigationaid or visualbearings.
•Maintain a continuousplot of your boat’s positionon a current
chart. Ensure thatthe locked autopilot heading will steerthe boat
clear of all obstacles. Make proper allowance for tidal set –the
autopilot cannot.
•Evenwhenyour autopilotislockedontothedesiredtrackusinga
navigationaid,alwaysmaintainalogandmakeregularpositional
plots.Navigation signals canproduce significanterrors under
some circumstances and the autopilot will not be able to detect
these errors.
