REAR PANEL:
1. Mains cable connection: Please ensure that the input cable strain relief bush is intact and has not been
damaged.
2. Warning icons: Please be aware that this unit contains high voltages, and should not be opened. See
Safety Instructions at the beginning of this manual.
3. OPTICAL OUTPUT: SPDIF Digital audio output for connection to optical input on amplifiers.
4. SIGNAL OUTPUT: For connection to analogue line input RCA sockets on amplifiers.
5. ANTENNA: F-type socket. Pigtail antenna cable 300 Ohms with F-type connector provided for Band-III
radio reception.
Fixing the Antenna:
The reception quality will be directly determined by the strength of
the input signal. Although the location of the tuner in relation to the
transmitter is the main factor, the positioning of the antenna and the
length of wire or cable also play an important role. Below is the
instruction for fixing the antenna.
1. In DAB+ mode, press INFO button on remote control until signal
strength bar meter appears on the screen. The slightly larger
rectangle indicates the audio quality threshold. If the signal
strength, as indicated by the solid rectangles along the bar from
left to right, lies on or below this threshold, the audio quality will
be poor. (See section on Manual Tuning for DAB+ for more
precise method of adjusting the antenna.)
2. Move the antenna until you get the strongest possible signal.
Note: Keep the antenna wire away from computers, televisions, telephones other cables and cords. In
Australia the wire antenna is best placed vertically out of the back of the unit, preferably near (or even through)
a window that faces in the direction of the station transmitters.
To ensure the best possible signal reception, it is recommended to connect this antenna output to an external
roof-top TV antenna, most of which are also suited for FM reception (cables and connectors not supplied). A
good DAB+ reception will ensure a good FM radio signal reception, for both audio and RDS / DLS data.

TUNING OPERATIONS
LCD Display Information:
The LCD display has three areas of information decoded from digital data that is broadcast by most stations.
The screen indicates the transition between modes DAB+ / FM / Bluetooth. It also shows station name (or
sometimes frequency for FM) on the first line, and displays dynamic text (RDS or DLS) below on second line,
which also displays other menu features.
Dynamic Label Segment (DLS) is the name of the encoded text data system for DAB+, while Radio Data
System (RDS) is the name of the system used with analogue FM radio. And it also displays the text
information relating to Bluetooth playback, all of which is described under the Bluetooth Playback section.
Start Operation:
1. Press the standby button on the remote control to turn on the unit.
2. Select either DAB+ or FM mode by pressing the DAB/FM button.
3. In DAB mode you need to perform a full scan before you can begin listening to any stations. Press and
hold the AUTO button. This scan will take about a minute to complete. (After connecting the power and
the antenna cable, the A2698A will automatically do a full scan for DAB+ stations as soon as the unit is
switched on. It will also do this after a Factory Reset or if the station list is not populated.)
4. To change the station, press the TUN+ or TUN- button on the remote control.
Note: Tun- is the same as |<<, and Tun+ is the same as >>| in both FM and DAB+ and BT modes (although in
BT mode, these buttons function as transport controls among tracks). I.E. these buttons can be used
interchangeably in any mode. If you tune to a DAB station and fail to press enter, the station ID / name will
remain in the LCD for about five seconds and then the screen will revert to the station ID for the station that is
actually playing.
Manual tuning for DAB+:
Press the MENU key on the remote control until ‘Full Scan' appears on line two of the display. Then press the
TUN+ button on the remote control, or move the jog wheel control knob clockwise until you see the words
‘Manual Tune’ appear on the LCD. Press ENTER and use TUN+ or TUN- key to select DAB stations by
channel and frequency (5A to 13F). Press ENTER and a signal strength bar will appear below the channel
details.
The slightly larger rectangle on the signal strength bar indicates the audio quality threshold. If the signal
strength, as indicated by the solid rectangle along the bar from left to right, lies below this threshold, the audio
quality will be poor. Move the antenna to get the most solid rectangles above the threshold on the bar.
The stations operating on the chosen channel will be scanned and stored. Repeat for as many channels as
are operating in your area. Some channels may not have any stations operating.
This method of tuning can be useful for adjusting your antenna to achieve the best possible reception, and
also for scanning a particular channel to update the station list.

DAB Radio Mode:
DAB radio mode receives DAB+ digital radio signals
and displays information about the station and
program track being broadcast.
The first time you use the A2698A tuner, or if the
station list is empty, the radio will automatically
perform a full scan to capture the available DAB+
stations in that area. You may also need to start a
scan manually to update the station list for one or
more of the following reasons:
• New stations become available from time to time.
• Similarly, some stations that were operating for a
time cease to broadcast. (Invalid stations are
indicated by a ‘?’ in front of their name.)
• If reception was inadequate in the original scan,
some stations may have been missed and the
station list would be incomplete.
• If the reception is poor, you may want to list only
those stations that have a strong signal.
Once a full scan is completed the radio returns to
playing the previously tuned station, or the first
station on the updated station list.
The functions available under the MENU – which
include Full Scan and Prune – are described under
the section headed MENU.
Selecting Stations:
DAB Stations are normally listed in alphabetical order
in the list. The exception to this ordering is the
placement of the secondary stations, which are
normally parked in the list alongside the primary
station with which they are associated. Any station
that has associated secondary services has a’>>’.
Any secondary stations are indicated by the
presence of a ‘>>’ .
DAB+ DLS Information that is available by pressing
INFO:
• DLS - Dynamic Label Segment is information
which may be transmitted by the station including:
song title and artist, program information, news,
sport and weather information, contact details
(web, phone etc.).
• Signal Strength - this is useful when trying to
determine the best position for the unit and its
antenna. The slightly larger rectangle segment of
the signal bar indicates the audio quality
threshold. If the signal is not on or above this
rectangle, then the station reception is likely to be
poor or subject to disruption in the form of drop
outs.
• Program Type - describes the primary format or
genre of a station i.e. Jazz, Rock, Talk, Classical
etc. If it is not present, the screen will display ‘No
PTY’.
• Ensemble name: This tells you from which
transmitter the signal comes. This is helpful for
manual tuning of DAB+ stations.
• Channel and Frequency: Essential for manual
tuning
• Signal Error – Shown as a bar with the error
number.
• Transfer Rate and varies between 22 and 128
kbps. It is displayed on screen as a number
measured in kbps e.g. 64 kbps DAB+ (the digital
decoding mode = DAB or DAB+).
• Time: Displayed as 12 hour or 24 hour format
(default setting).
• Date: Displayed as Day:Month:Year (default
setting).

FM Radio Mode:
On the remote control, use the TUN+ or >>| to scan the FM frequencies up the dial or TUN- or |<< to scan the
FM frequencies down the dial. Use |<< or >>| on the front panel to tune into available FM radio frequencies.
Press any of these buttons for one second to advance the dial one step of 0.05MHz in either direction. Press
any of these buttons for two seconds for the tuner to seek for the next FM signal (in the direction chosen) that
is strong enough to auto detect. Once a solid signal has been found, the tuning will stop seeking and will start
playing the audio that is being broadcast by a station on that frequency.
The AUTO button on the remote control does exactly the same thing as the other buttons described above.
Auto scanning will take place in the direction along the dial that was previous used, depending on which arrow
button was pressed.
Weak FM stations might have improved reception if the Audio Setting is changed from stereo to ‘Forced
Mono’. However, some low power FM stations are already broadcasting in mono only. These mono stations
cannot be forced into stereo reception. They will always be mono.
While and FM radio station is playing, the screen will display the frequency, the station ID, and any other RDS
information that might be available.
FM RDS information that is available by pressing INFO:
• RT: Radio Text - This is almost equivalent to DLS in a DAB+ broadcast. If there is no data available, screen
will show ‘No Radiotext’;
• PTY: Program Type (i.e. Station format or music genre). If there is no data available, screen will show ‘No
PTY’;
• PS: Program Service = Station ID or Frequency;
• Mode: Stereo or Mono;
• CT: Clock Time - Displayed as 12 hour or 24 hour format (default setting).
• DT: Date - Displayed as Day:Month:Year (default setting).
Note: If the radio station in question has not activated and/or is not broadcasting DLS or RDS data, then the
LCD will show nothing, no scrolling text etc. or it may just show the frequency or an error 'N/A' (Not
Available) message.

Presets:
The unit has 20 preset memories which can store 10
DAB+ and 10 FM stations of your choice with one-
button recall operation. Please note that if you
decide to store a secondary level DAB+ station, there
is a possibility that this station will only be broadcast
periodically. This means that when you recall the
designated preset at some time in the future, using
the number pad on the remote control, it may no
longer have any program or music content. It will
then be necessary to retune to an alternative station
and save it to that memory.
To store a station or frequency to a preset memory
location number:
1. Tune the unit to the station required using either
the remote control or the |<< or >>| buttons on the
front panel.
2. Decide which preset number you want to store this
station on.
3. Hold down this preset button on the remote control
for a few seconds.
4. LCD display will read 'Preset X Stored', where 'X'
is the number you pressed.
If a preset does not have a station allocated to it, the
LCD will read 'Preset Empty' when this number
button is pressed.
To replace a preset memory and save another station
to that location, simply repeat the steps above for
that number, and the old station will be replaced with
the new one.
To clear presets entirely, simply perform a factory
reset – see Menu section.
Bluetooth Operation:
Select the Bluetooth mode using the MODE button
on the front panel or the remote control. Or you can
enter Bluetooth mode directly by pressing the BT
button instead. The MODE button is also used to
leave Bluetooth mode and return to DAB or FM
mode.
This first message indicates that the Bluetooth mode
is operating and the BT module built into the tuner is
activated and become discoverable to any
compatible Bluetooth-enabled device located in the
vicinity of the A2698A.
This LCD message indicates that the Bluetooth mode
is operating but no devices are connected or paired
with the A2698A. The A2698A Bluetooth remains
discoverable and ready to pair while this message is
displayed on screen.
This message indicates that a handheld device is
pairing with the A2698. If a phone or tablet or similar
handheld device is also switched into Bluetooth
mode, the handheld device will search for
discoverable Bluetooth signals nearby and load their
identity onto the found devices list. From this list,
select ‘A2698A’ and the two devices should
commence pairing. The pairing process should not
take more than 30 seconds and ‘BT ___ Connected’
message will display and the pairing takes place.
As soon as a device and the A2698A are paired, the
A2698A LCD will show the name of the BT paired
device on line one (e.g. ‘BT John’s Mobile’) and ‘||
0:00’ on line two. Select songs from the paired
device’s stored music playlist, or streaming audio
(radio) or video apps, and commence playback from
whichever source is chosen. The audio will play
through the speakers and the amplifier into which the
A2698A is connected. The ‘||’ icon will change to ‘>’
and the track time will begin to advance as the track
is played.

A 2698A Digital (DAB+) Bluetooth FM Tuner
®
13
BT Transport control buttons (on front panel and
remote control) - The >|| button can be used to pause
the playback of the playlist audio, and also restart
play of the audio. The >|| icons will change on the
A2698A screen accordingly. The |<< and >>| buttons
can be used to rewind or fast forward through tracks
that are playing, or advance / skip to the beginning of
the next track or back to the beginning of the current
track or a previous track. To rewind or fast forward
through tracks, press and hold the buttons (This
operation is silent, but the LCD will change from ‘>’ to
‘>>’ for Fast Forward).
To skip the start of the current, previous or next
tracks in the playlist, just press the corresponding
transport buttons momentarily. Moreover, the user
can also fully control the playback from the controls
available on the paired handheld device, and the
A2698A will respond according to the commands
given, such as Play / Pause, Fast Forward / Rewind,
Skip tracks etc.
BT Info - Press the INFO button to scroll through
different types of textual information about the song
that is playing, namely: Time played (Default) > Track
Title > Artist Name > Album Title > Clock Time >
Date. This track data should match what is displayed
on the connected device’s screen (clock time and
date may differ because the A2698A gets its time
from a different source automatically – See System
functions).
BT Switching – It is possible to pair multiple devices
with the A2698A and for these devices to be
remembered by the in-built BT module. By pressing
the BT button repeatedly, a user can scroll through to
any other paired device identity and select it for
playback. If the device is within range and has
Bluetooth active, the connection will be restored and
audio playback will commence. The LCD screen will
display this message when a user presses the BT
button to switch to another paired device:
Where ‘X’ is a number according to the position of the
device in the list order (most recently paired device is
listed first and is number 1) stored by the A2698A BT
module’s memory.
There is a set limit on the number of pairings that can
be stored. Tests have verified that the A2698A can
store at least 8 device pairings. While these devices
remain in range and active, they can be selected by
scrolling through the stored list of devices, and
quickly re-engaged for playback purposes.
Even if a paired device has its Bluetooth switched off,
when it is switched on again, the A2698A will retain a
memory of that pairing, and it can be quickly
reconnected from the list of stored paired devices.
NOTE: To clear the paired devices list completely
and in one step, simply perform a factory reset
(Preset memories will also be cleared!) – see Menu
section. Otherwise, a paired handheld device can be
unpaired by the user simply by deleting the A2698A
pairing from that device’s list of paired items.

Time Setting parameters are important for situ-
ations where the radio tuner is being used in
areas where there are no DAB broadcast serv-
ices (and no FM RDS) available. In such loca-
tions, set the TIME > Auto Update to ‘No
Update’ and then set the time and while the
unit is power on, the time will be maintained by
the internal clock. Where DAB and FM RDS
are both available, the tuner can check the time
by the clock data that is broadcast in these
radio transmissions.
~ DRC function reduces the difference between
the loudest and quietest audio being received
by the tuner. When set to ON, it effectively
makes the loudest audio comparatively quieter
and the softest audio comparatively louder.
^ Factory Reset allows a user to return the unit
to its ‘just-out-of-the-box’ state. This is helpful if
you are having trouble with your unit (i.e. tuning
blockage) or you have moved to another city
and/or you wish to delete the station presets. A
factory reset will initiate a fresh scan of the
DAB+ channels. In most cases the rescanning
will commence automatically after reset. If not,
press and hold AUTO button in DAB mode.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Problem Possible Solutions
A. No sound output from the unit. 1. Ensure that connection leads to the amplifier are correct.
2. Check that the speakers are connected to the amplifier
3. See that the power of the unit or connected amplifier is turned on
4. Ensure that the unit has been able to locate the DAB+ stations.
B. Display has gone blank or says
'Signal N/A' or 'Service N/A'.
1. Check that antenna is connected.
2. Ensure that DAB+ coverage exists in your area.
3. This may occur if a broadcaster changes the label of a service or removes a label whilst you are
listening to it. The unit will try to retune to this station, or alternatively follow the procedure for auto tune.
C. Cannot access secondary
services.
At the time of publishing this manual not many secondary services are available, but this may increase as
more DAB+ stations start broadcasting. If a secondary service station is available, the secondary ’>>’
indicator will be displayed next to the station name.
D. Remote control does not work. 1. Check that the battery is inserted correctly.
2. Replace the remote control battery if it is old and degraded in responsiveness.
3. Turn the unit off then back on at the power point.
E. DAB+ reception is poor. Cannot
find any stations.
1. In a country that uses DAB+, make sure you first perform a full scan, not quick scan.
2. Make sure there is coverage in your area.
F. Burbling sound on some stations DAB+ like other digital media is good at producing quality audio from a low level signal, however if this
signal level is too low a burbling sound can sometimes be heard. To reduce this effect, try repositioning
your antenna to gain maximum signal strength. Or connect the unit to an external TV antenna. Think of
the burbling sound with DAB+ as being similar to the audible hiss or static heard when an analogue FM
signal is weak and unclear.
G. A station or service cannot be
received when a preset button is
pressed.
1. The station or service has not been preset.
2. Another station or service is preset. Preset the station or service again.
H. Bluetooth is not pairing with
external handheld device.
1. Attempt to perform the pairing when in close proximity to the A2698A.
2. The A2698A Bluetooth does have a memory of previously paired devices. Press BT button and scroll
through options.
