For the setting of the boiler for a new fuel we recommend the following procedure:
1. Choose the programme suited for the fuel you want to use.
Programme 1 = fuels with a high caloric value compared to volume (heavy fuels)
Programme 2 = mixed
Programme 3 = fuels with a low caloric value compared to volume (light fuels)
2. Primary air approx. 15 %
Start the unit and open/close the primary air gradually over some days till the ashes are white

Warnings
2.1 Information about Risks
There is a risk of burns if the boiler door is opened while the boiler is operating.
2.2 Use of the Boiler
This boiler is designed to burn the following fuels,
-Chips, cut straw, grain, wood pellets.
2.3 Operator
Persons who are to operate this boiler must first read this manual.
2.4 Maintenance
Please see the paragraph about maintenance of the boiler.
NOTE! Each time before you start maintaining the boiler or the connected stokers etc. the boiler
must be stopped and the current must be switched off by pulling the CEE-plug so that there is no
current on while the boiler is being maintained. Put the switch at a visible place so that the current
is not connected by accident during maintenance. (Main switch/Safety switch can be used and
locked).
2.5 Repair/Servicing Contract
Only certified installers/ blacksmiths and personnel from Maskinfabrikken REKA A/S are allowed
to repair this boiler during the guarantee period.
We recommend that service and service agreement is carried out by REKA’s certified dealers with
qualified personnel. You find our dealer list on www.reka.com.
Service agreement is recommended to secure high efficiency, correct operation, unnecessary stops
and long duration of the unit.

Operation of the Unit
3.1 Operation of the Unit
The complete unit consists of a pre-treatment / dosing unit, f. inst. a straw cutter, a hydraulic silo
discharge, a cone silo discharge, a grain pit, or a coal pit etc.
The fuel passes through a fireproof lock (or, if there is only a fuel container, through a feed screw)
with a sprinkler, and the feed screw conveys the fuel onto a moving pushing grate where the total
combustion takes place by added primary and secondary air.
Ashes and slag are transported to the ash container by the moving pushing grate. The unit can be
fitted with automatic ash removal which takes the ashes/slag outside into an ash container.
A high-effective four-pass steel plate boiler transfers the heat volume.
The unit is easy to maintain, robust, of a simple and sturdy construction which maximize the
lifetime.
3.2 Control Means
- Operation Thermostat
Adjust the thermostat to the requested temperature and the unit starts and stops automatically.
Clearance operation of the blower and the smoke exhauster may cause the temperature to rise. If
so, reduce the thermostat a little (See Control Panel).

3.5 Start-Up – Stop
- Before Start-Up
you must check if the flow and return valves are open, whether there is enough water in the unit
and the expansion tank and if the flue gas dampers are open. See burner/stoker manual.
Note! When units with ash removal are started the first time with an empty ash worm, the open end
of ash removal worm must be filled with sand to prevent false draught in the boiler.

- Boilers with fresh lining
Boilers which are started up for the first time are to be pre-heated and dried up according to the
instructions of the brickwork supplier. See the enclosed instruction (only for HKRSV)
- Ignition
Start the unit and keep the worm activated on the display till fuel has covered first grate. Stop the
firing and place paper and wood on top of the fuel (some kindling, if necessary) and light it up.
We recommend the use of wood pellets or dry chips the first two days the boiler is operating. The
unit will then have reached normal working temperature. Condensate in the boiler / chimney and
moisture from the fireproof lining will have evaporated. Then you can burn difficult fuels such as
grain.
Open the smoke damper and keep it open till the fuel is burning well. Then start the unit (Start-up –
control panel) and open the air supply little by little by opening the damper (at the blower). (You
may throw a little kindle on the fire to make it burn better).
Too much fuel in the combustion chamber may cause high smoke temperatures which may damage
the smoke exhauster.
Secondary air nozzle
Close the primary air valve completely or ajar when the fire is burning
well. The secondary air supply must always be as high as possible,
whereas the primary air quantity should only be just high enough to
ember the ashes completely. (See the table on page 4).
The thickness of the fuel layer varies with the different fuels, however, normally the grate must be
almost covered.
Note! Adjust the working time of the grate to f.inst. (6 sec) and pausing time to (1 minute)
depending on the quality of the fuel.(Wood pellets: working time approx. 1 sec and pausing time
approx. 1 min). See stoker control on top of page 27-28.
Units with variable speed of the dosing worm can be adjusted by turning the wheel of the variator
(Note! this must only be done during operation).
Please note that if the fuel has low volume weight the worm must work much – if the volume
weight is high, the worm has to work very little.

- During Operation
The flue gas damper has to be adjusted so that there is the necessary low pressure in the
combustion chamber, measured at the door (approx. 1 to 1.5 mm WC). If the draught is regulated
automatically, you must try now and then whether the setting is correct and, if necessary, clean the
lambda probe.
The firing must be careful and under constant supervision. The temperature rise to working
temperature must be slow and if necessary with suitable starts and stops of the firing as too fast
firing may cause shock effects.
The setting can f.inst. start with a 30 % open primary air valve. Both fuel and air supply (primary
air) must now be fine-adjusted till you obtain a good combustion.
During the firing and the first time hereafter you must expect some condensate which could lead to
the assumption that the boiler has a leak. Exuded moisture is condensate and evaporation of water
from the brickwork and is created by starting up a cold boiler.
The temperature of the return water should not drop below 57°C. The optimal temperature is 60°
C which prevents corrosion. This is done by ensuring that the difference temperature (difference
between flow and return) is not higher than 10-15°C.
- Normal Operation
The output of the unit is determined by the quantity of air supplied during the combustion. Much
air makes the output high. Overloading may lead to high smoke temperatures which could damage
the smoke exhauster.
The distribution between primary (underblast) and secondary air depends on the fuel.
Add 100 % secondary air and 5 % primary air to dry fuels (wood pellets, straw, wood shavings).
Add approx. 25-50 % primary air to moist fuels such as wet wood chips. Generally, you should
only supply so much primary air that the ashes are completely embered/burnt as too much primary
air will damage the economy.
Setting of the Flue gas damper
The practical rule is that there should be 1 to 1.5 mm WC low pressure in the combustion chamber.
You can adjust the chimney damper / smoke exhaust damper at the same time. A correct setting
cannot be made until the unit is burning well
The working time of the pushing grate must be correctly adjusted according to the fuel.
- Very dry fuel with low ash content – the working time of the grate must be very short,
f.inst. 1 sec per minute.
- The working time of the grate must be longer, f.inst. 10 sec/minute if you burn moist fuel or
grain and fuels with high ash content.

The control current is switched off at the display of the control panel.

3.6 Failure during Start, Operation or Stop
Irregular Operation
- Switching Off of Motors
Objects such as stones, wood pieces, rags and the like which may be found in the fuel can get
stuck between the worm and the worm casing. This will cause the thermo fuse (motor safety
switch) to switch off the motor and break the main circuit. The bottom of the CEE-plug is fitted
with a phase inverter which you can push down and turn with a screw driver. Start / stop the unit,
and the motors will run in the opposite direction so that stuck objects can be removed. Do not
forget to reset the phase inverter.
Note! During any maintenance of this boiler or the connected stokers etc. the boiler has to be stopped
and the current must be disconnected by pulling out the CEE-plug so that the current to the boiler
is disconnected. Place the plug at a visible place in order to prevent that the boiler is switch on by
mistake during the maintenance. (Main switch / safety switch can also be used and locked).
If the worm does not rotate after repeated attempts there must still be stuck objects which have to
be removed.
If no alien bodies are found in the fuel, the problem may be caused by too wet or unsuited fuel
which “packs” in the worm casing or the worm could be overheated. In both cases the worm will
run very tight and ware out the mechanism.
You can check if the worm is worn out by removing the fuel from the worm end from inside the
boiler and feel with your hand if the worm end is sharp. (Main switch must be disconnected and
locked or the CEE-plug must be pulled out!). If the worm is worn it must be replaced, however,
in many cases it can be repaired by welding on new worm windings.
- If the worm turns without feeding fuel, the fuel may be too wet and be stuck in the funnel or the
silo and build a bridge over the worm.
-If the blower supplies too little air, it may be due to:
Defective blower
The blower wings may be dirty and must be cleaned.
If the air space under the grate is filled with ashes which have fallen through the grate openings,
the ashes have to be removed. If the grate openings are covered by small stones or ashes stuck in
the air holes, they must be poked out with a screw driver or a similar tool. Clean the smoke
exhauster and the flue pipes. (See Cleaning on page 13).

3.8 Other Information
- Heating Stations with Several Boilers
Make sure that only the required number of boilers are put into operation. All boilers in operation
must be sufficiently loaded with the fewest and shortest possible stops.
Do not change unnecessarily often between the boilers. It is better to let the boilers stay in
operation till they have to be cleaned.
When a boiler is stopped, it has to be cleaned immediately. Close the flue gas damper of the
stopped boiler.
3.9 Special Machinery
3.10 Maintenance
The boiler must be cleaned of ashes and slag. How often depends on the ash content of the fuel.
The cleaning is very important. You cannot prevent ashes from falling through the holes of the
grate openings into the empty space under the grate. You must clean the space to secure
sufficient air supply. Remove the ashes under the grate through the clean-out doors in the base of
the boiler. If the holes of the grate elements are closed it may hamper the air flow so they should
be cleaned with a screw driver or a similar tool through the boiler door.
Remove the flue pipes from the boiler and clean them. Clean the flue gas outlet facing the smoke
exhauster. When you fit the flue pipe, the opening must face the back (away from the front door).
Check the secondary air nozzle and clean it, if required. Especially if you burn difficult fuels.
(See photo on page 15).
Unscrew the four long bolts of the smoke exhauster to remove the motor plate with blade. Clean
the smoke exhauster and the blade as required.
If you burn difficult fuels such as grain it may be necessary to scrape the top of the grate and the
sides of the fireproof lining with a rake. Slag can build on the top grate and force the fuel over
the slag. This can cause the boiler to stop due to lack of flame (high oxygen). The fuel layer can
get too high and thus damage the combustion and the secondary air nozzle.

- Lubrication
Note! Externally on both sides of the grate base there are grease nipples for lubrication of the
moving grate shaft with a grease gun (2 to 4 times a year).
On delivery the gears are filled with sufficient oil.
The gears are greased for life, and the oil should only be changed in connection with repair of the
gear. Oils corresponding to Castrol: Hypoy 80w/90c or Shell: Spirax 90 EP or similar.
Note! The variators of the variable gears must be greased with a special synthetic oil which you
may buy from Maskinfabrikken REKA A/S.
- Cleaning of the Boiler
Combustion chamber, flue pipes, smoke exhauster and the space under the grate must be cleaned
regularly.
The pipes must be cleaned if the flue gas temperature under unchanged operation conditions rises
by 30 to 50°C over normal temperature.
Remove the soot from the combustion chamber is through the large door.

- Cleaning of the Water Rooms
At the first start-up the drain cock at the bottom of the boiler must be opened shortly till mud
stops running out.
After the first year or later under any circumstance every second year cleaning plugs and hand
holes must be opened and the boiler must be rinsed well with a water hose. Descale the boiler, if
required, by acid treatment which should be conducted by a boiler cleaner. To prevent boiler
scale it is important to keep the adding of fresh water as low as possible which also means that it
is important that the boiler is as tight as possible.
- Stopping the Boiler
Immediately after the boiler has been stopped, all heating surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned
while the boiler is still warm as soot and ashes bind moisture which could cause corrosion.
The best cleaning method (if you have no automatic dolomite equipment) is to blow high
quantities of magnesite or dolomite into the flames with a blower through the looking glass. This
will neutralise potassium salts and sulphuric acid and break the coating of the tubes so that it can
easily be brushed off.
If the boiler is not too be used for some time, f.inst. in summer, it must be closed as tightly as
possible after cleaning. Air supply through the boiler is prevented by covering the air intake of
the blower or covering the whole boiler in plastic foils. Open a clean-out door or explosion door
of the smoke outlet or the chimney if this is possible without disturbing the operation of other
boilers. This will prevent draught in the boiler. If the boiler is stopped in winter, the boiler house
must be kept free of frost or the unit must be made frost-proof with Glycole.
- Further Maintenance
Boiler doors must be kept tight. If necessary, the ceramic packing threads must be renewed after
some years.
Clamp dogs/wing nuts of the base must be tightened after some time. If the flue gas damper is
manual, the nut and holding nut must be tightened so that the damper cannot turn by itself. After
adjustment, the wing nuts of the primary air damper must be tightened.
All bolts/nuts must be tightened after assembly of the unit or as required. Loose bolts of gears
can destroy gear and flange.
Bearings must be greased twice a year with Molycote or a praphite/oil mixture. Hinges and
threads of clamp dogs etc. must be greased as required.
Clamps of door hoses must be tightened after start up of the boiler and as required.

This manual must always be available in the boiler room if needed.

Assembling – Disassembling – Repair - Erection
4.1 Erection
Place the boiler on the base and right it.
Make sure that the boiler is horizontal or is falling towards the bottom drain valve and is
horizontal on the transverse shaft.
Assembling boiler and fuel container: Insert the green flange to the right in the black flange
shown on the photo to the left, and tighten the four bolts. Make sure that the white/grey packing
thread of the black flange does not fall off during assembling.
Lubricate all bearing surfaces and threads thoroughly with graphite dissolved in oil or a similar
temperature-resistant lubricant.
Keep the tube glands for measuring smoke samples free of the insulation.
- Current-Caring Wires (Motors)
Slack off the three nuts of the terminal board (one for each phase) when connecting the unit to
the power supply. Under these you find the three nuts holding the wires from the winding of the
motor to the terminal board. These nuts must never be loosened.
If it should happen in spite of everything, the motor will not have the necessary current supply
and will thus not work optimally. You can easily check as the wires cannot be moved if the nuts
are tightened correctly.
Do not forget to switch off the current before removing the lid of the terminal board from the
motor.

Fireproof Lining of the Combustion Chamber -
Disassembling
The combustion chamber is lined with 7 firebricks. The side bricks
are different in pairs, and the smooth side must face the fuel (because
of better fitting to the grate bars). Lift and remove the top brick (cover
brick). The nozzle can be pulled out when the Allen screw of the hose
connection at the back of the boiler has been loosened. Remove both
side bricks. When you assemble the lining, sides and back plate of the
boiler must be cleaned. Insert both side bricks and fit the top inner
brick so that the ridge of the top brick is between the side bricks.
Insert the nozzle and place the top brick (cover brick). Make sure that
the inner bricks touch the back of the combustion chamber.
4.2 Disassembling
The unit is disassembled in the opposite order
Pushing Grate – Disassembling and Assembling
Tools: a medium sized screw driver with a flat slot. All grate elements are loose and can be lifted approx.
50 mm up vertically and removed – when assembling the unit you must make sure that the closed/tight
elements are in the bottom row. (Removal starts from within and outwards).
4.3 Chimney Requirements
The chimney draught must supply between 0.5 and maximum1.5 mm W.C. in the combustion
chamber. The chimney and the flue pipe connections must have a diameter of at least Ø125 mm
and maximum Ø133 mm. (In most cases it is necessary to install a draught stabilizer in the
chimney to equalize and minimize the draught).
The insulation of the flue pipe connections must consist of at least 30 mm Rockwool aluminium
wire mesh insulation mat or the like. The flue pipes must incline towards the smoke outlet of the
boiler, i.e. a rise towards the chimney and not under horizontal inclination towards the chimney.
Diameter of smoke outlet = 133 mm.
The flue pipe joints must be tightened with heat resistant tape or the like.
Chimneys and flue pipes must be fitted with the necessary number of clean-out doors.
The distance between flue pipes and inflammable building parts must be at least 300 mm.
Measuring nozzles for smoke sampling must be kept free of the insulation.
The chimney must be made of acid proof stainless steel or be fitted with a ceramic cone.

The assembling must be carried out according to the rules and regulations in force. We especially
point out that you must make sure that the connection to the expansion tank cannot be shut off.
4.4 Complaints
Complaints, if any, must be forwarded to the supplier.
4.5 Responsibility of the Manufacturer
To stock spare parts.

It is the responsibility of the user that this unit is only operated in accordance with the
instructions of this manual and that only the types of fuels described in this manual are used.
If you want to burn fuels other than the ones mentioned in this manual, please contact
Maskinfabrikken A/S prior to use.

Smoke Exhauster R2A 150-AC01-16, 1800 rpm
Smoke exhauster R2A is designed to solve the problem of poor draught in the chimney. It is often
more inexpensive to fit in a smoke exhauster than to build a new or higher chimney. Besides, the
smoke exhauster secures a constant draught. The smoke exhauster is designed for high flue gas
temperatures (max 400°C) as its nave is air cooled. The draught of the exhauster is approx. 2.5 mm
W.C. of hot flue gas. Output 170 m3/h. It is easy to open for cleaning and the power consumption is
only 32W.
This smoke exhauster can be used for boilers
up to max. 30 kW. The exhauster is supplied
with a manual adjusting damper which
secures a very precise adjustment of the
draught.
The terminal block and the control programme in
the control panel of all the REKA HKRST/V
boilers, 20 to 30 kW, are prepared for the building
in of this smoke exhauster.
The smoke exhauster can also be used for
manually fired straw or wood boilers. It can f.inst.
start simultaneously with the firing of the boiler,
and a timer can then turn off the smoke exhauster
after a fixed period.
Unscrew the four long bolts of the smoke
exhauster to remove motor plate and blade.
Smoke exhauster and blade must be cleaned
according to need.
