USER MANUAL
1. Connecting the Starter Strobe:
Assemble the strobe unit using either the 90 degree connector or the straight connector:
Insert the strobe light pole into the socket on the top of the housing. If more height for the light is required, simply use a
longer length of 20mm PVC pipe.
The strobe can be positioned in either a horizontal or vertical position. The black cover can be swivelled around to give the
best viewing angle. In bright daylight, it is best to have the light in a horizontal position protected from direct sunlight.
Connect the plug from the strobe light into the socket marked ‘Light’.

1. Connecting the Starter Strobe:
Assemble the strobe unit using either the 90 degree connector or the straight connector:
The handpiece can comfortably be operated up to a metre from the housing, but if greater distance is required then
use the extension cable and in-line connector. The microphone extension cable can be inserted while the system is
switched on or off.
Depress the tab (with a fingernail) and pull the microphone plug from the housing socket. Re-plug the microphone
cable into the inline connector (either end) and then connect the extension cable between the in-line connector and
the housing as indicated below.

Operation Modes
Always operate the Starting System from behind or to the side of the sound horn. Do not operate the tone while in a
confined space or positioned within 2 metres of the front of sound horn as feedback will occur and the tone may cause
hearing problems with excessive exposure.
The starting system can be operated in a number of modes which can be selected at start up:
1. Default PA / Tone Mode (Quick Start Mode for swimming)
When the starting system is powered on the follow sequence will occur:
The timekeeper’s light will immediately illuminate for a period of approximately 2 seconds. If the Starter’s button is pressed
once during this time the system will start in default PA / Tone mode for swimming.
The system is now ready to operate as a PA system or starting system.
Simply speak into the handpiece while squeezing the ‘Press To Talk’ (PTT), the large button on the left of the microphone. To
avoid feedback adjust microphone volume to a suitable level and always stand behind the speaker. If you need to have the
handpiece further away from the speaker, plug in the microphone extension lead provided.
The microphone volume control does not affect or control the start tone volume level only the PA volume of the user’s voice.
A start tone is generated or sequence started or ended by pressing the starter button on the microphone handpiece.
Note: All system selections are made by use of the Starter’s button on the microphone handpiece.
The system will default to the following ‘quick start’ settings:
1. PA active when the Press To Talk Switch is activated on the hand microphone;
2. The second lowest tone setting (600Hz) will be selected.
3. False start tone will be selected
4. The timing system contact selection will be Normally Open (The switch is closed to trigger the timing system).
2. Manual Selection Options for Tone Modes
The unit has three or four selectable tone options depending on the tones loaded.
Turn on (Power) the unit. The strobe light will illuminate for two seconds. If the ‘Starter’ button is pressed during this time,
the system will load default settings as covered in the previous section.
If the ‘Starter’ button is not pressed while the light is initially on, the system will begin to cycle through the three or four
selectable options. The first tone is the 2-pitch tone for the beep test (if loaded) followed by two swimming tones 400Hz
then 600Hz and the third or fourth is the simulated pistol shot.
Pressing the ‘Starter’ button after the desired tone (while the light is on) enables the user to select their desired option for the
location and activity.
Three confirmation tones will sound to indicate this sequence is complete.

Selecting the Default False Start / No False Start setting:
Following the selection of either 2 swimming tones or pistol shot (and 3 confirmation tones) the light will illuminate again
for 2 seconds. While the light is lit:
• Pressing the starter button during this period will select no false tone setting followed by three confirmation tones.
• If no action is taken while the light is on the false start setting will be activated, followed by three confirmation tones.
Selection of Normally Open/Normally Closed contacts (for Timing System use)
The Starting System can be used with a number of different timing systems. Where a timing system is used, the starting
system can provide either Normally Open (NO) or Normally Closed (NC) activation.
If you have selected the default settings as shown in Section 1 the timing system contact selection will be NO (i.e. the
switch will close to trigger the timing system.)
Following selection of the false start / no false start and confirmation tone the light will illuminate again for 2 seconds.
While the light is lit:
• The NO setting will be selected by default if no action is taken while the light is on, followed by three confirmation tones.
• If the ‘Starter’ button is pressed when the light is on the NC setting is selected, immediately following the 3 confirmation
tones.
The system is now ready for operation.
3. Maintenance
The Starting System is powered by two internally housed rechargeable
sealed lead acid batteries. It is recommended the batteries be recharged
after each use of the System. A 12V power pack is provided for charging
the batteries.
Important:
regular charging. The System should never be left for any length of time
with flat or near flat batteries.
In order to achieve good life from the batteries and minimise problems it is
recommended that the system is charged for 12 to 24 hours once every 2 -
3 weeks during non use periods.
This process can be automated to some extent by leaving the charger
plugged into a 7 day time clock. The charger is a smart charger and will
drop to a trickle charge (green light) when the batteries have reached their
optimum charge. The charger can be left plugged into the system when it is
not in use, allowing the system to be charged during the time clock ‘on’
period.
When the system is operating (switched on) the batteries will not charge
even when connected to the 12V power pack. This is to prevent operators
trying to use the system around a swimming pool while the power pack is
connected to mains power. The batteries can only be charged when the
power switch is in the ‘off’ position.

Optional Items
20 metre ‘Beep Test’ (First tone selection if loaded):
Selecting the first (‘2-tone’) option while the light is lit will be followed by three confirmation tones only. The beep test is run
over a 20 metre distance (between distance markers).
• The beep test routine is started by pressing the starter button once
• The start of each level will begin with a low-high tone and 2 strobe flashes;
• Each sub level within a level is signalled by a single tone and a single strobe. (A tracking sheet is provided on the next
page for printing and use during the routine.)
• The end of the entire routine (level 21-16) is signalled by 3 tones and light.

The sequence can be stopped at any time by pressing the starter button. Pressing the starter button again will restart the
entire routine.
It is unlikely that any participants will reach the final level. To quit the routine or to select another tone / option switch the
power off for a period of 15 – 20 seconds. When switched on again any option can again be selected. (please refer to
publically available material on the web for rules pertaining to the running of the beep test routine).
Extension Speaker
An optional 8 ohm 30 watt external speaker and 30m cable can be connected in parallel with the on-board speaker for
additional sound coverage
Remote PA
The starting system is equipped with a PA Auxiliary connector which allows the PA to be input to an external PA system
(e.g. at a pool or track) or the external PA to be fed into the PA/Starting System PA.
The PA Aux connector can also be connected to handheld ‘walkie talkie’ radio sets which allows PA to be broadcast from
the PA/Starting System by any handheld radio (UHF CB) on the selected channel in the area. This enables Event Marshals
and Officials to broadcast information to competitors prior to the Start or following the start when required.
(Further information will be provided for operation with specific PA or hand held radio systems.)
