Welcome
Congratulations on your purchase of the Roland
TD-3. This TurboStart contains step-by-step
instructions that will quickly introduce you to the
TD-3’s major features.
Making Audio Connections
1. Confirm that the power is off on the TD-3, and
turn down the volume of your amp, mixer, or PA
etc.
2. With standard instrument cables, connect the L
(MONO) and R OUTPUT on the TD-3’s rear
panel to a pair of inputs on your amp, mixer or
PA. If your amp is mono, connect the L(MONO)
OUTPUT only. If you prefer, connect your
headphones to the TD-3’s PHONES output
instead.
3. The TD-3 has a MIX IN jack for connecting a CD
or MiniDisc (MD) player so you can play along
with your favorite music. For this connection, use
a stereo mini cable. Connect one end to the
TD-3 MIX IN, and the other end to the
headphone output on the CD/MD player.
4. After the connections have been made, turn on
the TD-3, and then turn up its VOLUME knob.
Selecting Drum Kits
There are 32 drum kits to choose from in the TD-3.
Use the following steps to select one:
1. Press DRUM KIT so it’s lit.
2. Press the + or – buttons to select the desired kit.
Drum Kit Preview
Drum Kit Preview plays a pattern that lets you
audition the sounds in the currently selected drum kit.
Use the following steps to try out Drum Kit Preview:
1. Select a drum kit.
2. Press and hold DRUM KIT and then press
INST—the DRUM KIT button flashes.
3. Press DRUM KIT to stop the preview pattern.
Tip: You can press + or – to select other drum kits
while the preview pattern is playing.
Selecting Instruments in a Kit
There are over 100 sounds to choose from in the
TD-3. Use the following steps to select instruments in
a drum kit:
1. Select a drum kit.
2. Press INST—the INST button flashes.
3. Hit the pad—or area of the pad such as the head
or rim—that contains the instrument you wish to
change.
Note: Rim shots or dual trigger actions are not
possible using the TOM 1-3 jacks on the TD-3.
4. Press the + or – buttons to select the desired
instrument.
5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for the remaining pads if
desired.
6. Press DRUM KIT when you’re finished. The
settings are stored automatically.
Adjusting the Instrument Volume
The volume, or “level,” can be adjusted for any of the
instruments in a drum kit. Use the following steps to
adjust the level of an instrument:
1. Select a drum kit.
2. Press LEVEL/PAN so the level value is in the
display—the LEVEL/PAN button flashes.
Note: Each press of the LEVEL/PAN button
alternates between the level and pan settings.
3. Hit the pad to select the instrument whose
volume you’d like to change.
4. Press the + or – buttons to increase or decrease
the instrument’s volume.
5. Press DRUM KIT when you’re finished. The
settings are stored automatically.
Starting Over
If you’d like to redo the TD-3’s settings from scratch,
use the following procedure to clear the TD-3’s
internal memory and reload its factory settings.
Caution: When you perform the following steps, all
USER information will be lost. Be sure to back up any
information you wish to keep first.
1. Turn off the TD-3.
2. Power on while holding the + and - buttons.
3. Release + and -, and then press DRUM KIT.
