Operating Guide for
ROLLEI SUPER-8 CAMERA
BATTERIES
The lm transport as well as the power zoom are
operated by three 1.5 volt "AA" batteries. They
are located in the grip of the camera, which is
easily opened with a small coin. The proper
arrangement of the cells is clearly marked on the
top inside edge of the battery chamber.
To test the condition of the batteries after loading
them into the camera, move the shutter speed
switch to 18, look through the viewnder and
pull the trigger. If a green light appears above
the image in the viewnder, the batteries are
good. If the light ickers, the batteries are nearly
exhausted. If the light does not go on, change
the batteries. In addition to the light signal, the
pointer in the viewnder will not move when the
batteries are exhausted.
CARE OF THE CAMERA
Protect from sand, dust, moisture and1
prolonged exposure to strong sunlight
or heat.
Keep the external mechanical and1
optical parts clean.
Use a blower brush and Kodak lens1
tissue to remove dust and ngerprints
from the lens.
Occasionally clean the lm gate with 1
a blower brush.
Remove the batteries when not using1
the camera for extended periods of
time.
Keep camera in case when not in1
use.
BRIEF OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Install 3 fresh "AA" Alkaline batteries and then
insert lm cartridge in the cartridge chamber.
Set the lm speed selector to 18 (standard silent
speed). Insert lter key to remove lter when
necessary (see lter key instructions below).
Adjust the viewnder to your eyes using the
diopter and then adjust the focusing ring until
the image in the viewnder is sharp. Lastly, zoom
to desired focal length and begin lming.
LOADING THE CAMERA
Open the cover on the right side of the camera
and insert the lm cartridge. Press down on the
rear edge to snap it into place. Close the cover.
The window in the cover of the cartridge chamber
shows that the camera is loaded and the type of
lm being used.
When there is lm in the camera, the indicator
shows how much lm remains to be exposed. The
lm footage indicator returns automatically to the
"O" position when the lm cartridge is removed
from the camera. When the 50 feet of lm has
run through the cartridge, the word "exposed"
will appear on the lm at the cartridge opening.

FILTER KEY
A built-in orange conversion lter corrects Super-8 lm, designed for illumination by articial light,
to the proper color balance for daylight exposure. For color exposures with articial illumination, or
when using black& white lm, the lter key must be inserted into the key slot on top of the camera to
move the color conversion lter out of the light path.
FOCUSING
First, set the diopter. Then, set the focus to innity; look through the camera at an object at least 20
feet away. Carefully rotate the eyepiece (diopter) for the sharpest image. Now the camera's optical
system is adjusted to your eye. Focus the camera by aiming at the subject, setting the zoom control
to 36 and adjusting the focus ring until the image is sharp. The image will now remain sharp at any
setting on the zoom control, as long as the subject to camera distance remains the same. Whenever
this distance changes, the camera must be refocused.
POWER ZOOM
The zoom lens permits a smooth change of focal lengths. On the side of the Rollei SL82 is the power
zoom lever. Pushing the lever up sets longer focal lengths (telephoto), appearing to bring the subject
closer; pushing it down sets shorter focal lengths (wide angle), appearing to move the scene away
from the camera. You may zoom manually at any time by rotating the zoom ring on the lens barrel.
EXPOSURE CONTROL
The light meter adjusts for ASA/ISO 50 or 160 lms automatically when the cartridge is inserted.
The exposure control system then automatically adjusts the aperture for proper exposure. The
aperture setting gures can be read in the illuminated eld below the viewnder. When the number
16 disappears or a red eld becomes visible, the light conditions are not appropriate for shooting.
When the 16 disappears you are overexposing the lm; when the red eld becomes visible, you are
underexposing it.
APERTURE LOCK
It may be desirous to override the automatic exposure control in some lighting situations, as when the
subject is backlit. To do this, zoom in until the part of the scene you want properly exposed lls the
viewnder. Press and hold the aperture lock button on top of the camera; this will hold the setting
while the scene is re-composed and the lm exposed. Release the aperture lock button to allow the
automatic exposure control to operate again.
USING A CABLE RELEASE
The threaded sockets on the trigger allow for attachment of a cable release. The socket with the line
mark is for continuous lming. The dot mark socket allows repeated single frame exposures for stop
motion and animation effects. NOTE: Cable release accessories should be tested prior to leaving
Media Loan. Some short pin units won't work with the Rollei.
SHOOTING WITH A TRIPOD
The tripod thread is on the bottom of the camera grip. You may want to use a tripod to achieve a
steadier image, particularly for pan shots, zoom shots, single framing, and when using longer focal
lengths.
FILM SPEED
Standard silent Super 8 lm speed is 18 frames per second. However, in some cases it is better to use
the faster 24 fps setting. Pan, tilt and zoom shots will appear somewhat slower and smoother when
lmed at 24 and projected at 18. 24 fps is also recommended for shots from moving vehicles. If you
plan to transfer you lm to video at some point, the transfer is usually done at 24 fps. The exposure
control on the camera adjusts itself automatically to compensate for the change in shutter speed.
