1 INTRODUCTION
This document provides step-by-step instructions for users to update the Window
operating system (OS) on the RST Ultra-Rugged Field PC2.

POSSIBLE TO AVOID DATA LOSS.

2 PROCEDURE
The following steps describe the procedure to upgrade the Windows OS on the Field
PC2.
2.1 DOWNLOAD WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICE CENTER
Windows Mobile Device Center offers device management and data synchronization
between a Windows Mobile-based device (Field PC2) and a computer.
1. On a laptop or PC, visit: https://support.microsoft.com/en-
ca/help/931937/description-of-windows-mobile-device-center
2. Scroll down to “Download Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1”.
3. Select the link for the appropriate version for your system (Figure 2-1).

4. Select the correct language from the pull-down menu and click “Download”
(Figure 2-2).

5. The software should download automatically.
6. Open the newly-downloaded file. The software will install automatically.
7. Once the software is installed, the user can access the “File Management” folder
for the Field PC2. The user can also access the “Pictures, Music and Video”
folder and “Mobile Device Settings”.
2.2 ACCESSING FILES ON THE FIELD PC2
1. Once the Windows Mobile Device Center is installed, connect the Field PC2 to
the laptop or PC via USB. The status of the connection can be seen in the
bottom left corner of the Windows Mobile Device Center (Figure 2-3).
The initial connection will perform driver installation and could take several
minutes.

2. On the Windows Mobile Device Center, select “File Management” to access files
on the Field PC2.

2.3 BACKING UP FILES
Before updating the OS, it is very important to backup all files on the Field PC2.
Updating the OS will erase all programs and files from the Field PC2.
CAUTION: ONCE THE OS HAS BEEN UPDATES, ANY FILES THAT WERE NOT BACKED UP
ONTO THE PC OR LAPTOP WILL BE PERMANENTLY LOST.
2.4 RESTORING DEFAULT FACTORY SETTINGS
1. Connect the Field PC2 to the power adaptor and a power source.
CAUTION: THE FIELD PC2 MUST BE CONNECTED TO A POWER SOURCE IN ORDER FOR
THE UPGRADE TO PROCEED.
2. Double check that the Field PC2 is still connected to the laptop or PC with a USB
cable. Wait for the Mobile Device Center to connect to the device. If it does not
start automatically, open the program from your desktop.
3. Hold the power button down until the blue screen appears (Figure 2-5). The unit
will restart a few times, but continue to hold the power button down until you see
the blue screen.

4. Using the stylus or a finger, slide the “Set Factory Defaults” to “Yes”, then click
“Exit” (Figure 2-6). The Field PC2 will restart.

5. If prompted, click “OK” on the Date/Time setting dialog. Follow instructions on
screen. Wait for the process to finish.
6. On the laptop or PC, download the following file:
http://www.rstinstruments.com/customersupport/downloads/FieldPC/Archer-2-
OS-Current-English.zip
7. Once download is complete, unzip the downloaded file.
8. Run Archer-2-OS-XXX-English.exe
NOTE: XXX DENOTES THE CURRENT VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE.
9. Click the green check mark to install the new OS (Figure 2-7 and Figure 2-8).

10. Wait for the OS to upgrade and the Field PC2 to restart. Set the correct time and
date when the Date/Time dialog appears. Click “OK” and wait for the process to
finish.
11. A message will appear asking the user to verify the correct OS version has been
installed. Click the green check mark to continue (Figure 2-9).

12. The device will reboot once more.

2.5 VERIFYING THE OS VERSION
1. Once the device has rebooted, select “System Info” on the Home Screen (Figure
2-10).
