4DRUM MOTOR INSTALLATION MANUAL 80LP-138LP
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Product description
The Drum Motor is a completely enclosed electrical
drive roller, with the gear box, electric motor
and bearings located inside the drive drum. This
construction results in a Drum Motor with a very
compact design, and all the internal components
are protected against external factors. The Drum
Motor can be used in many different environments
including exposure to ne dust as well as to water
jets and water spray and is resistant to most
aggressive elements and environmental conditions.
The Drum Motor transfers the required power to
a conveyor belt, converting the drum torque into
traction force. The available internal protection
rating of IP66 or IP69 and the optional stainless-
steel design means that the drum motor is also
suitable for use in the food processing sector. An
idler pulley is a drum without an electric motor,
used to tighten the belt and create traction on the
drive drum.
Integrated thermal protection: All drum motors
are supplied with a built-in thermal protector.
Protection consists of heat-sensitive, bi-metallic
switches built into each motor phase winding.
The switches are designed to open if the motor
temperature rises to an excessively high level.
These switches must be connected to a control
circuit (in series with a magnetic coil/relay device
and contactor) that is closed by default. A motor
control circuit will cut motor power if the thermal
switch opens. Thermal switches will automatically
close as the motor cools. Cooling times vary with
pulley model, power, and size.

16 DRUM MOTOR INSTALLATION MANUAL 80LP-138LP
ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION
Assembly
Recommended ambient temperature:
-5 °C to +40 °C
>Ensure that the rating information on the data
plate corresponds to your specications.
High friction may lead to an overload
of the conveyer belt drive motor and premature
wear of Pulley lagging!
> Avoid belt and/or roller misalignment.
> Assemble the Drum Motor as follows:
• horizontal,
• parallel to the idler rollers and
• perpendicular to the conveyor belt centre line.
Installation
Electrical installation/connection must be carried
out by a licensed electrician in compliance with
local electrical standards.
The motor must be connected and secured in
accordance with National Electrical Standards.
Hazardous voltage! Failure to follow
the instructions below may result in electric
shock, severe burns or death.
Before installation:
1. Make sure that the mains voltage corresponds
to the voltage of the Drum Motor.
2. Switch off the power supply.
3. Secure the power supply against accidently
being switched on again by others.
Motor protection:
>Always install the motor control system together
with suitable motor protection.
(e.g. an overload switch or a frequency inverter
with overcurrent protection)
>Protect the motor from possible voltage spikes
and excessive jogging.
>Adjust the motor protection device according to
the rated current (see data plate) of the pulley.
Installation:
>Connect the motor according to the wiring
diagram.
1. Check that motor protection is set up correctly.
2. Ensure protection against electric shock.
• Cable option: Connect the green/yellow wire
to the earth conductor for the mains supply.

17
COMMISSIONING
Before commissioning:
>Make sure that the data plate and the customer specications match.
>Ensure that:
• the electrical connections are correct.
• the Drum Motor turns freely.
• belt tension is suitable to prevent belt slippage.
• the belt is not over-tensioned.
Operation
Do not put the Drum Motor into operation unless the machine in which it is to be installed
complies with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
General Information
Attention!
>Operate the Drum Motor only if:
• it has been correctly installed.
• it has been correctly connected to the power
supply.
• its rotating parts are secured from accidental
contact.
Rotating parts! Moving parts can
crush and cut. Do not reach between the Pulley
and the belt. Operate the Pulley only with a
suitable guard.
>Always operate the Drum Motor with a
conveyor belt.
The conveyor belt must cover at least
2/3 of the shell.
Test run:
1. Attach the shaft of the Drum Motor to a test
frame or conveyer frame.
2. Secure the shell against accidental contact.
3. Start the Pulley.
Ambient Temperature – Heat Dissipation
• Drum Motors are normally cooled by dissipating
heat through contact between the surface of the
Pulley and the conveyor belt.
• The Pulleys are lled with oil to improve heat
dissipation.
>Make sure that there is always a sufcient
temperature difference between the Pulley’s
motor stator and the ambient temperature.
• Drum Motors are designed and tested under
full load without rubber lagging for use in an
ambient temperature of maximum +40 °C.
• In the presence of rubber lagging, transportation
of hot materials, operation with sprockets and/or
ambient temperatures higher than +40 °C, heat
dissipation will be less effective.
• This may result in:
> Motor winding protection being switched off.
> Motor winding burning out due to constant
overtemperature.
> In case of ambient temperatures of lower than
-5 °C and higher than +40 °C, please contact
RULMECA.
Reversing Conveyors
• All Drum Motors are reversible.
>Design the conveyer drive control system so
that the Pulley comes to a standstill before it
starts in the reverse direction.

18 DRUM MOTOR INSTALLATION MANUAL 80LP-138LP
TRANSPORT AND STORAGE
General Information
>Remove the packaging.
>Carry out an inspection of the product for transport damage or any missing parts.
>Contact RULMECA in the event of any problems.
Transport
To avoid transport damage and personal
injury, use a lifting device.
>Transport of Drum Motors must be carried out
by authorized personnel only.
>Ensure that the Drum Motor is properly secured
prior to transport.
>Use a lifting rope in accordance with the
maximum weight of the Drum Motor.
• The weight of the Drum Motor can be found
on the data plate or in the catalogue.
>Attach the lifting rope to the shaft ends.
Storage
>Keep the motor in a dry and enclosed/covered
location, protected from direct sunlight.
>Turn the Drum Motor shell 360° every 6 months
to lubricate all internal parts.
In case of a storage period of more than 6 months:
>Carry out a test of the Drum Motor before
operation.
>Properly attach the Drum Motor to a test frame
for a test run.
>Carry out a check of:
• the motor winding with an insulation tester,
• the winding resistance,
• and the thermal protector with a continuity
tester.
>Furthermore, connect the Pulley to the power
supply and carry out a test run for a minimum of
30 min to make sure there are no oil leaks.
Make sure that the body temperature
of the Pulley does not exceed 70 °C.
