Use with converters
When Delph -Ex motors are used w th converters, n add t on to the general select on cr ter a
(l m t values: rated voltage <830V, peak voltage <2,2kV, voltage grad ents <2,2kV/1µs), cons derat on should be
g ven the follow ng po nts:
• Motors powered by nverter have a voltage (or current) wh ch s not purely s nuso dal.
Th s leads to an ncrease n losses, v brat on, no se, and a d fferent temperature r se.
• Poss b l ty of sp kes s l nked to the value of the converter power supply voltage and the length of the motor power
cable.
To l m t the phenomenon, t’s adv sable to use spec f c f lters connected between the converter and the motor
(mandatory for motor power cables over 50 mt).
All Delph -Ex motors are equ pped as standard w th a re nforc ng Nomex f lm between phases to protect aga nst the
voltage peaks.
• The correct ground ng of the motor and the dr ven mach ne s very mportant to avo d voltage and stray currents n
the bear ngs.
To prevent the current c rculat on n the bear ng f the motor t s not equ pped w th an nsulated bear ng, use a
proper f lter to reduce the h gh frequency harmon c voltage above 50kHz.
• Motors w th power from 110kW and up must be equ pped w th nsulated bear ng and the coupl ng must be
nsulated.

• It’s mandatory connect thermal probes to the converter to safeguard the motor from the overheat ng wh ch could be
generate by a m suse.
These probes have two term nals for connect on marked w th a label and located ns de the ma n term nal box.
• For nverter power supply the sw tch ng frequency must be h gher than 4kHz (PWM type), output frequency range
0÷150Hz.
• Atex forced vent lat on assembly s mandatory f the motor s used at frequenc es lower than 50Hz at constant
torque load.
If the motor s used at frequenc es lower than 50Hz at quadrat c torque load, please refer to the follow ng graph for
the max mum percentage of torque load adm tted.

Installation recautions
For the nstallat on of the motor please cons der the follow ng:
• make sure that no damages have occurred dur ng transport.
• remove carefully the components of the plant from the wrapp ng mater al and any other protect ve dev ces.
• make sure that the value of the voltage on the motor plate s the same as the voltage of ma ns.
• surfaces n contact w th the electr c bond ng and the rat ng plate must not be varn shed.
• set the motor on a flat surface.
• make sure that the bear ngs or the flange are well f xed and, n case of d rect coupl ng, the motor s perfectly
al gned.
• rotate the rotor manually n order to ver fy the absence of any dragg ng.
• ver fy the rotat on sense remov ng the coupl ng.
• spl ce (extract) the output components ( .e. coupl ng, belt pulley, etc.) only us ng correct dev ces (shr nk ng-on).
Avo d not allowed tens on on the pulley.
• n the models n wh ch the shaft s w th the end downwards, use the protect ve cover. If the end of the shaft s
upwards, use a cover prevent ng any penetrat on of external parts nto the fan.
• do not h nder the vent lat on. The d scharged a r, together w th the a r com ng from other groups, must not be
mmed ately re-asp rated.
• ver fy the correct ground ng of the motor.
Maintenance warnings: clean the motor only with a wet or antistatic cloth.

Electrical and thermal rotections
Protect ons must be chosen based on the spec f c runn ng cond t ons, accord ng to standards EN60079-14 and
EN61241-14.
External rotections:
•
Protect on aga nst overcurrent and short-c rcu ts; th s protect on can be made w th the magnetotherm c c rcu t
breaker or w th fuses; these must be cal brated on the motor current.
•
Protect on aga nst overload by thermal relay that controls a power l ne contactor upstream the motor.
•
If the appl cat on requ res, protect on aga nst excess ve speed of the electr c motor, for example f the mechan cal
load may dr ve the electr c motor tself and thereby create a hazardous s tuat on.
•
If spec al cond t ons or synchron sed operat on w th other mach nes or parts of mach nes requ re t, protect on
aga nst power fa lures or d ps by means of a m n mum voltage relay that controls an automat c power kn fe sw tch.
Internal rotections:
The electr cal protect ons on the motor power supply may not be suff c ent to protect aga nst overloads.
Connect ng bu lt- n protect ons on the w nd ngs solves th s problem:
•
PTO b metall c probe (normally-closed electromechan cal dev ce that becomes open when the threshold
temperature s reached).
The reset of th s cut-out must be performed manually only, and not automat cally. The user, n compl ance w th the
norms, must use a tr pp ng relay out n compl ance w th IEC 61508 standard (Fa l Safe type).
Mot ve Delph -Ex motors, up to s ze 132 ncluded, are equ pped as standard w th 3 PTO 130°C b metall c probes.
•
PTC therm stor (dev ce that suddenly changes pos t vely ts res stance when the threshold temperature s reached).
Mot ve Delph -Ex motors, from s ze 160 ncluded, are equ pped as standard w th 3 PTC 130°C therm stors.

Bearings lubrication
Motors w th sh elded self-lubr cat ng bear ngs “ZZ” (as standard up to motor s ze 280 ncluded) do not requ re any
per od c lubr cat on.
Bear ngs l fe ranges from 3 up to 5 years accord ng to the ax al and rad al loads that are charged on the shaft and to
env ronmental cond t ons the motor s used n.
Motors from s ze 180 prov ded w th the bear ngs lubr cat on un t must be lubr cated wh le runn ng accord ng to the
lubr cat ng ntervals and the grease quant ty as reported n table 1.
For not standard roller "NU" bear ngs and angular contact ball bear ngs "7.." , the lubr cat on ntervals t m ng,
reported n table 1, s the half.
Lubr cat on ntervals t m ng s also the half for motors suppl ed by converter, because the grease vetr f cat on caused
by the currents arc between stator and rotor.
For th s reason, nsulated bear ngs (spec al execut on) are recommended on such motors, espec ally when the rated
power s ≥110kW.
Use l th um o polyurea grease w th m neral o l bas s su table for a max mum work ng temperature of at least 190°C.
