RIGGING THE MAST
HEADSTAY
To fa sten the heads tay to the mast , the marin e
eye is a ttached to the middle hole in the front of
the mas t head . The turnbuckle wil l be at tach ed
to the bow chain pla te in the forward hole .
8ACKSTAY
The mar ine eye of the bac ks tay is att a ched to the
aft hole in the rear of the mast head . On the 23
the jaw on the other end of the st ay is attached
to the upper hole of the bridal plate . Take the
backs ta y bridal cables end a tt ach th eir jaws to
the lower ou ter ho les of the bridal plate. The ir
turn bu ckles will be attached to the s tar board and
port aft chain plates.
NOTE : On the 26 there 1s no bac kst ay brida l , so
th e si ngle backst ay turn buck le will be
a tta ched to the af t chain plate .
SPREADERS,
To in stall the sp readers insert them into theI
spreade r brack e ts w hic h are al ready fastened to
the side of the mast. Rotate the spreade r u ntil
its ho les align wi th hol e s in the bracket . Now
the cott er pin, which i s s up p lied , can be in serted
and bent ove r . After th e pin is bent , it s hou ld
be taped to preven t s ail dam age .
UPPERS
The jaws of the upper shrou d s a re a tt ached to the
side tan gs at the top of the ma s t. The shrouds
are then lea d down to the spre ader s wh er e they
should be sa fe ty wi red to prevent th e poss ibi li ty
of jum pin g ou t w hi le unde r se i l , They sho uld
also be tape d to prevent sail damage . The upper
shroud turnbuckl es will then be attach ed to the
outermost hole of the sid e chain plate .

r-
Before the mast is to be st ep ped , mak e s ure that
a ll of th e turn buckle s are at the ir longe st ad-
ju s tment. Pinning the turnbuckles to the cha in
plate s is much ea sier when they are fully ex te nde d .
Afte r i t is s te pped , they shou ld be sa fe ly w ired
and taped to prevent loos ening or sa il dam ag.e .

HALYARDS
The 52 ha lya rds are a lread y in the ma st , so no
set -up is req uired . However , before the ma st
is s te pped, mak e s ure the halyard is no t a t th e

FRESH WATER SYSTEM
The wa te r tank and wate r line s should be r--
com ple tely emptied in prepa ratio n for winte r
stor ag e . r>
COVE RING r-
If sto ring outdoo rs I a winte r cover is recommended.
It can be as s imple as a re cta ngul a r piec e of r">;
ca nvas forming a tent over the boat. A rid gepol e
(formed by 2 x 45 al ong the cen terline) seve ral
feet above the cabin top , well suppo rted at r-
several places along its length, is sufficient to
support the center . Us e carpeting to pad any
areas of chafe. Lash the cover tightly to the "
cra d le , avoiding any metal grommets in conta ct
with the ge lcoa t. "
VENTIlATION "
Try to leave some openings 10\1cove r so the boat
can get air during the winter . r-,
BILGES
.r--
Be su re to pump the bilge completely dry. Elevate
bow sli ghtl y so if any water has accumulated in
ba ll ast area, it wi ll dra in to keel bilge area and rr-;
remove before free zi ng.
r-,
CRADLE OR TRAILER
Ma ke sure that the boa t is adequately su pported
a nd tha t any su s pe c ted weakn ess has been "
reinfor ced. The ke e l of the bo at mu s t rest s oli d ly
on the main beam . The vertical ris ers are not
int e nded to carry the load , merely to stabilize "
the boa t . r>.

10
STEPPING THE MAST
When the mas t ha s be en co mpl et ely rigged , it is
re a dy to be stepped. The fi rst thing that should
be done is to make sure the deck area is cle ar .
If it is th e mast can be tak en on board the boatI
and laid with its leading edge down and its head
facing forward. In this position the mast can
I
be slid forwa rd until the pla te on the ma st base
is above the plate on the de ck. The forward pin
of the two pins can be inserted thr oug h bo th
plates. This pin will hold the mast in place
while the turn bu ck le s on the forestay, upp er's,
and lowers can be attached to their proper chain
plates.
(lNe advis e stepping the mast from the bow, but
mast can be stepped from eith er bow or st ern .)
This is a good time to make sure all of the turn -
buckles are fully extended. If they are I the mast
is ready to be raised.
Once the mast ha s been rai s ed to its vertical
position, I
the ba cks tay turnbuck les can be
s e cured to the aft chain pla tes, compl eting the
st epping .
NOTE : Wh en s te pping the mast, check for any
type of electrical cables which may
int erf er e .
SHROUD TENSION
Unde r no circumstance s should any of the rigging
be s e t up "bar tight." For all s 'at ltnq condit ion s
the 82 mast should be vertical and in column,
with the rigging "firm. A good starting place
tI
for tuning the mast is to have the foresta y and
backstay the tighte st, with about one inch of
sideways play. Next is the upper shrouds with
about one or two inches of play , and finally the
lowers with two or three inches of play .

\..
SAILING THE S2 YACHT
One of the mo st reward ing a cti viti e s co nne c ted
wi th saili ng is tinkeri ng w it h a boat 's riggi ng.
The ri gging mu st be tune d co rre c tly s o that the
boa t can give its be st perf ormance . A good
ski pper a lways seems to be looki ng a loft at the
sa ils and ri ggi ng , lookin g fo r ways of improving
s ail sha pe and boa t perfor mance . Throug h this
type of tinkering a person ac quir e s a th orough
und ers ta ndi ng of how the boa t s ails and wh a t is \..
needed to sail the boa t prope rly . It ' s the job
of the he lmsman and the crew to be able to trim
the sa il s and trim the boat for a wide vari e ty of
wi nd and weather conditio ns .. . so tha t the
boa t sails herae If . \..
Letting the bo at sail her self is one impor tan t
aspec t of saili ng a s hoa l dra ft boa t like th e 52.
Because of the type of keel , which is very long
w ith a s hall ow dr a ft , a shoal draft bo a t will
per form much bett er w hen sa il ed on her lin e s .
By saili ng her wit hin a 70 to 150 heel , she wi ll
pe rform very w ell to wi nd ward in most a ny
condi tio n.
So , as the wind incre ases, th e a moun t of hee l
can be kept wi thi n the desi red a mount by vary ing
th e sail sh a pe and / or ar ea . Aga in, bec a use of
the keel de s ign , it is be tte r to let the boa t tak e
a bi gger sw ing or radiu s wh en tacki ng. Thi s
way the bo a t is not figh ti ng th e wa ter, but
worki ng wit h it .
