If the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this equipment
should not correspond to the coloured markings identifying the
terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal
which is marked with the letter ‘N’ or coloured black.
The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the termi-
nal which is marked with the letter ‘L’ or coloured red.

Beachten Sie bitte folgende Punkte.
Netzstecker
Beim Abziehen des Netzkabels nicht am Kabel! sondern am
Stecker ziehen. Niemals den Netzstecker mit nassen Handen
einstecken oder abziehen, da Sie sonst einen Stromschlag
erleiden konnen.
Gerdteinneres
Falls eine Haarnadel, Munze oder irgendein Metallgegenst-
and in das Gerat fallt oder Wasser Uber das Gerat verschuttet
wird, sofort den Netzstecker aus der Steckdose ziehen und
|hren Handler oder die nachste SANSUI Kundendienststelle
um Rat fragen. Bei fortgesetztem Betrieb kann es zu Storungen oder
Stromschlag kommen.
Weder Gehdause noch Bodenplatte entfernen.
Eigenmachtige Inspketionen oder Einstellungen am Gerate-
inneren kOnnen die Ursache von Stdérungen oder Strom-
schlagen sein. Stochern Sie unter keinen Umstanden im
Gerateinneren herum.
Vorsichtsma&nahmen beim Aufstellen
Stellen Sie das Gerat nicht an den nachfolgenden Orten auf,
da die Leistung sich verschlechtern kann oder Storungen
auftreten konnen.
@ Orte in der Nahe von Heizkorpern oder sonstigen Warme-
quellen, oder Orte, die direkter Sonneneinstrahliung ausgesetzt sind.
@ Orte, die Feuchtigkeit oder Nasse ausgesetzt sind.
e Schlecht beluftete oder staubige Orte.
@ Orte, die Vibrationen aisgesetzt sind, oder unstabile Orte auf Schragen.
Zum Reinigen keine Verdinnungsmittel benutzen
Front- und Rickplatte sowie Gehause ab und zu mit einem
weichen, trockenen Lappen abwischen. Verdunner, Alkohol
oder sonstige leichtflichtige Flussigkeiten sollten niemals
zum Reinigen benutzt werden, da sie die Oberflache an-
gereifen und Kraterbildung auf den AuRenwanden oder teilweise Ablos-
ung der Schriftzige verursachen k6nnen. Auch sollten Sie Insektenspray
vom Gerat fernhalten.

Connections
*Instructions and requirements indicated may
vary to some extent depending on sales area,
local laws and regulations.
AC outlet
An AC outlet marked ‘‘“UNSWITCHED" is pro-
vided on the rear-panel. It is convenient to use
it tO power a program source component such
as your turntable or tape deck. It has a 100-
watt capacity. Do not connect any component
whose power consumption exceeds the capacity
of the outlet, as it is extremely dangerous. The
power Consumption rating of a component is
usually listed in its specification chart or some-
times on the unit itself.
@ in case you have connected a component to
the unit's AC outlet and then another com-
ponent to the first component's AC outlet,
the total power consumption of the first and
second components should not exceed 100
watts.
NOTE: Depending on the laws and regu-
lation enforced locally, models without
AC outlets may be supplied to some areas.
Also, depending on the sales area, the
shape of the AC outlets and their capacity
may differ.

Une prise de courant alteratif marquée “UN-
SWITCHED” (non commandée) est prévue sur
le panneau arriére. Elle s’avére pratique pour
alimenter une source de programme telle que
tourne-disque ou magnétophone. Sa capacité
est de 100 watts. Ne pas y connecter d’autre
composant dont la puissance dépasse la capacite
nominale de !a prise, car cela peut étre danger-
eux. La puissance de tout appareil est normale-
ment indiquée dans les spécifications ou bien
sur l'appareil lui-méme.

Tonbandgerat, verwendet werden. Sie eine

Connection precautions
*When connecting or re-locating the unit, be
sure to turn the power off or disconnect the
power cable.
* Be sure not to confuse the right channel with
the left, plus cables with minus or inputs with
outputs. Check each step carefully.
* Use connection cords of dependable quality.
Check that connections are secure and that
connecting leads are not frayed or in contact
with other objects. Poor connection may
cause hum noise or breakdown.
Amplifier
Connect the unit’s INPUT terminals to the Tape
Rec terminals of your amplifier, and the unit’s
OUTPUT terminals to the Tape Play terminals
of the amplifier.
Tape deck
You can comnect up to two tape decks to the
unit. Connect the unit’s TAPE REC terminals
to the line input terminals of your tape deck,
and the unit's TAPE PLAY terminals to the
output terminals of the deck.

Précautions a connexions
* Quand vous branchez !’appareil ou si vous |’ in-

couper l’alimentation ou de déconnecter le
cable d’alimentation.

Amplificateur
Raccorder les bornes INPUT de l'appareil aux
bornes Tape Rec de votre amplificateur et les
bornes OUTPUT de l'appareil aux bornes Tape
Play de votre amplificateur.
Magnétophone
Vous pouvez raccorder jusqu’a deux magnéto-
phones sur l'appareil. Raccorder les bornes
TAPE REC de I’appareil aux bornes d’entrée de
votre magnétophone et les bornes TAPE PLAY
de l'appareil aux bornes de sortie de votre mag-
nétophoen.

How to attach rack mounting adaptors.
(see illustration)
1. Remove screws (A) and (B) using a screw-
driver.
2. Fasten the rack mounting adaptors with the
four screws removed above.
e Tighten all screws firmly.
e The rack mounting adaptors are identical
for the left and right sides.
e The pitch of the rack mounting adaptors is
in accordance with the EIA specifications.
e When lifting the model up or transporting
it from place to place, always carry it by its
rack mounting adaptors attached at the left
and right.
e When mounting the model with rack mount-
ing adaptors in the audio rack, be sure to
anchor it with all four screws.
Caution: Do NOT ever remove any screws other
than those indicated as (A) and (B) in the illust-
ration.

1 POWER Switch
Power is supplied to the unit when this switch
is depressed. When released to the ‘‘out’’ posi-
tion, the power is cut off.
2 P.N. LEVEL Control
This control is for adjusting the output level of
the pink noise generator circuit which is built
into the unit.
Operate it when making the sound field flat or
measuring the sound field using the accessory
condenser microphone. The output level in-
creases as the control is rotated clockwise and
the level reproduced by the speakers changes in
line with the OUTPUT LEVEL control too.
Pink Noise: A form of noise in which the en-
ergy per octave is constant.
3 OUTPUT LEVEL Control
This control is for adjusting the unit's output
level. The level increases as it is rotated clock-
wise.
4 DISPLAY Switches
When the LEFT switch is set to ON, the spec-
trum analyzer indicates the frequency distribu-
tion of the left channel output. Set the RIGHT
switch to ON in order to have the right channel
frequency distribution indicated. Set both
switches to ON to have the frequency distribu-
tion of both channels shown simultaneously.

1 Interrupteur d’alimentation (POWER)
L'appareil est placé sous tension quand cet
interrupteur est enfoncé; Il’alimentation§ est

2 Commande de niveau de bruit rose
(P.N. LEVEL)
Cette commande permet de régler le niveau de
sortie du circuit de production de bruit rose in-
corpore dans |'appareil.
Agir sur cette commande pour uniformiser le
champ acoustique ou mesurer le champ acous-
tique a l'aide du microphone électrostatique
fourni.
Le niveau de sortie augmente lorsqu’on tourne
la commande dans le sens des aiguilles d'une
montre. Le niveau du son produit par les en-
ceintes varie egalement lorsqu’on agit sur la
commande de niveau de sortie (OUTPUT
LEVEL).
Bruit rose: Une forme de bruit dont l’énergie
par octave est constante.
3 Commande de niveau de sortie
(OUTPUT LEVEL)
Cette commande sert a régler le niveau de sortie

2 Pegelregler fur Rosa Rauschen
(P.N. LEVEL)
Dieser Regler dient zum Einstellen des Aus-
gangspegels der in das Gerat eingebauten Rosa
Rauschgeneratorschaltung. Benutzen Sie diesen
Regler, um ein flaches Schallfeld zu erhalten
oder um das Schallfeld mit Hilfe des als Zubehor
erhaltlichen Kondensor-Mikrofons Zu messen.
Der Ausgangspege! nimmt zu, wenn der Regler
im Uhrzeigersinn gedreht wird, und der uber die
Lautsprecher wiedergegebene Pegel verandert
sich ebenfalls in Ubereinstimmung mit dem
Ausgangspegelregler (OUTPUT LEVEL).
Rosa Rauschen: Eine Form des Rauschens, bei
dem die Energie pro Oktave konstant ist. _
3 Ausgangspegelregler
(OUTPUT LEVEL)
Dieser Regler dient zum Ejinstellen des Aus-
gangspegels des Geradtes. Der Pegel wird ernont,
wenn der Regler im Uhrzeigersinn gedreht wird.
4 Anzeigeschalter (DISPLAY)
Wenn die LEFT Taste auf ON eingerastet wird,
zeigt der Spektralanalysator die Frequenzverteil-
ung fur den linken Kanal an. Um die Frequenz-
verteilung fur den rechten Kanal Zu erhalten,
rasten Sie die RIGHT Taste auf ON ein. Zum
Ablesen der Frequenzverteilung fur beide
Kanale gleichzeitig rasten Sie beide Tasten auf
ON ein.

5 MODE Switches
These switches are for selecting the unit's mode.
LINE/RESET: Depress this switch when re-
producing a program source (LINE input) or
when releasing the computer operation.
ANALYZE: Depress this switch when measur-
ing a sound field using the spectrum ana-
lyzer and pink noise will then be reproduced
through the speakers.
COMPENSATE: Depress this switch when
making the sound field response flat.
6 EQUALIZER Switches
These switches are for selecting the equalizer
function mode.
DEFEAT: This switch is depressed when the
equalizer function is not used. The input sig-
nals are made flat even if the equalizer con-
trols have been set.
ON: This switch is depressed when the equal-
izer controls are employed to equalize the
input signals.
RECORDING: Depress this switch when re-
cording the signals of a program source with
the equalizing effect added onto a tape deck
or when dubbing (copying) tapes with the
equalizing effect added.
7 MEMORY Switches
SET: Depress this switch when storing the
equalizing characteristics which have been
set using the equalizer controls into the
memory with the MEMORY 1 ~ 4 switches.
When this switch is depressed, the indicator
above lights for about 5 seconds. When one
of the MEMORY 1 ~ 4 switches is de-
pressed while this indicator is on, the equal-
izing characteristics are stored in the mem-
ory.
FLAT: When this switch is depressed, the
equalizer controls are automatically set by
the computer to a compensated flat re-
sponse.
Moreover, after having made the sound field
response flat, the now flat equalizing charac-
teristics are stored in this switch and they
can be recalled at a touch,
1~ 4: These four switches are used to recall
any of the four SANSUI ‘Sound Menu’’
preset equalizations which are stored in
them. (Turn to page 10)
When these switches are depressed, the com-
puter sets the equalizing characteristics
automatically.
After the desired equalizing characteristics
have been stored using the MEMORY “SET”
switch, the custom equalization can be re-
called.
8 TAPE MONITOR Switches
Push one for monitoring. Normally, the
SOURCE switch is kept in the depressed posi-
tion.
TAPE-1: Depress this switch when playing
back a tape in a tape deck connected to the
TAPE-1 terminals.
SOURCE: Depress this switch when reproduc-
ing signals (such as those from a record or
broadcast) from the amplifier or when re-

TAPE-2: Depress this switch when playing
back a tape in a tape deck connected to the
TAPE-2 terminals.

DEFEAT: A enclencher lorsque la fonction de
correction n’‘est pas utilisée. Les signaux
d’entrée restent plats, méme si l'on utilise
les commandes de I|’égaliseur graphique.
ON: A enclencher lorsque !’on utilise les com-
mandes de correction afin d’égaliser Jes sig-
naux d’entrée.
RECORDING: Appuyer sur cet interrupteur
pour enregistrer les signaux d’une source
avec effet d’égalisation, sur une platine de
magnétophone ou pour ajouter du son aux
bandes préenregistrées avec un effet d'égali-
sation.
7 Interrupteurs de mémoire (MEMORY)
SET: Appuyer sur cet interrupteur pour mém-
oriser les caractéristiques d’égalisation ayant
été réglées a l'aide des commandes d’égalisa-
tion au moyen des interrupteurs MEMORY
1 ~ 4. Lorsqu’on appuie sur cet interrupteur
alors que ce témoin est allumé, les carac-
téristiques d’égalisation sont mémor isées.
FLAT: lLorsqu’on appuie sur cet interrupteur,
les commandes d’égalisation sont auto-
matiquement réglées par le calculateur sur
une réponse rectiligne compensée. Une fois
que la réponse du champ acoustique est re-
ctiligne, les caractéristiques d’égalisation
rectiligne sont mémorisées par cet inter-
rupteur et peuvent étre rappelées d'une pres-
sion.
1~ 4: Ces quatre interrupteurs permettent de
rappeler l'une quelconque des quatre égali-
sations préréglées ‘Sound Menu” SANSUI.
(Voir page 10).
Lorsque |’on appuie sur ces interrupteurs, le
calculateur regle automatiquement les carac-
téristiques d’égalisation. Aprés que les carac-
téristiques d‘égalisation recherchées ont été
meémorisées a l'aide de l’interrupteur MEM-
ORY "SET”, I'égalisation peut étre rappelée.
8 Commutateurs de reproduction de
bande (TAPE MONITOR)
Enfoncez-en un pour la lecture de bande. En
temps normal, le commutateur SOURCE est
laisse a la position enfoncée.
TAPE-1: Enfoncer ce commutateur pour la
lecture d‘une bande sur un magnetophone
relié aux bornes TAPE-1.

die Entzerrerfunktion nicht benutzt wird.
Der Frequenzgang der Eingangssignale wird
abfeflacht, selbst wenn die Entzerrerregler
eingestellt sind.
ON: Diesen Schalter wird gedriickt, wenn die
Entzerrerregler zum Entzerren der Eingangs-
signale benutzt werden.
RECORDING: Diese Taste zum Aufnehmen
von Signalen einer Programmauelle mit hin-
zugefiigtem Entzerrereffekt auf ein Ton-
bandgerat oder zum Uberspielen (Kopieren)
von
Tonbandern
mit

7 Speichertasten (MEMORY)
SET: Diese Taste drucken, um die mit Hilfe der
Entzerrerregler eingestellte Entzerrerkenn-
linie. Uber die Tasten MEMORY 1 ~ 4 inden
Speicher einzugeben.
Wenn diese Taste gedrtickt wird, leuchtet die
Anzeige dariiber etwa 5 Sekunden lang. Wenn
eine der Tasten MEMORY 1 ~ 4 gedruckt
wird, wahrend die Anzeige leuchtet, wird
die Entzerrerkennlinie gespeichert.
FLAT: Durch Driicken dieser Taste werden die
Entzerrerregler durch den Computer auto-
matisch auf einen neutralisierten flachen
Frequenzgang eingestellt.
Dartiberhinaus wird, nachdem der Frequenz-
gang des Schallfelds abgeflacht wurde, die
nun flache f€ntzerrerkennlinie in dieser
Taste gespeichert und kann auf Tastendruck
abgerufen werden.
1 ~ 4: Diese vier Tasten werden benutzt, um
eine der vier gespeicherten Entzerrungskenn-
linien im SANSUI ‘‘Sound Menu” abzurufen.

Wenn diese Tasten gedruckt werden, stellt
der Computer die Entzerrungskennlinien
automatisch ein.

9 DUBBING Switches
Use when copying from tape to tape. Normally,
the SOURCE switch is kept in the depressed
position.
1 >» 2: Depress this switch when copying a
tape from the tape deck connected to the
TAPE-1 terminals onto a tape deck con-
nected to the TAPE-2 terminals.
SOURCE: Depress this switch for reproducing
signals (such as those from a record or
broadcast) from the amplifier.
It is possible to record with two tape decks
connected to the TAPE terminals.
2 > 1: Depress this switch when copying a
tape from the tape deck connected to the
TAPE-2 terminals onto a tape deck con-
nected to the TAPE-1 terminals.
10 MIC Jack
This jack accommodates the plug of the acces-
sory microphone when making the sound field
response flat or when measuring the sound field.
11 SPECTRUM ANALYZER Display
The signal level of each of the bands is indi-
cated using the 8-band spectrum analyzer dis-
playing characteristics that correspond to the
graphic equalizer.
When a program source is being reproduced,
the frequency distribution is indicated and,
when a sound field is being measured, this
makes it possible to monitor the system’s sound
field frequency response at a glance.
12 STAND BY Indicator
This indicator lights when the unit's POWER
switch is at OFF to indicate that the back-up
power supply for the computer’s memory is
functioning.
13 BUSY Indicator
This indicator lights while the unit’s computer
is operating.
*When conducting a new operation while the
indicator is lighted, first remember to depress
the LINE/RESET switch and wait for the
BUSY indicator to go off.
14 UNDER LEVEL Indicator
This indicator winks repeatedly when the pink
noise output level is low when the sound field
response is made flat.
15 OVER LEVEL Indicator
This indicator winks repeatedly when the pink
noise output level is high when the sound field
response is Made flat.
16 Equalizer Controls
These controls allow the levels approximate to
the frequencies indicated above the controls to
be continuously controlled from +12dB to
—12dB for the left and right channels sepa-
rately.
The level is made flat when the controls are set
to the center ‘‘0" position. The level is increased
“when the controls are slid up from this center
position and decreased when they are slid down.
Adjust each of the frequency levels to your pre-
ference or requirements.

Lorsque une source est reproduite, la distribu-
tion de fréquence est indiquée et, lorsqu’un
champ acoustique est mesuré, il est possible de
contréler d'un simple coup d’oeil la réponse en
fréquence du champ acoustique du systéme.
12 Témoin d’attente STAND BY
Ce témoin s‘allume lorsque |’interrupteur
géneral (POWER) de l'appareil se trouve dé-
senclenché (OFF) pour signaler que l’alimenta-
tion de secours pour la mémoire du calculateur
fonctionne.
13 Témoin BUSY
Ce témoin s’allume lorsque le calculateur de
l‘appareil fonctionne.
*Lorsqu’on effectue une nouvelle opération
pendant que le témoin est allumé, penser
d‘abord a enfoncer le commutateur LINE/
RESET et attendre que le témoin BUSY
séteigne.
14 Témoin de bas niveau
(UNDER LEVEL)
Ce témoin clignote lorsque le niveau de sortie
de bruit rose est bas lors de l’uniformisation de
la reponse de champ acoustique.
15 Témoin de haut niveau
(OVER LEVEL)
Ce témoin clignote lorsque le niveau de sortie
de bruit rose est haut lors de l’uniformisation
de la réponse de champ acoustique.
16 Commandes d’égalisation
Pour les canaux gauche et droit séparément, ces
commandes permettent de controler de maniére
continue entre +12 dB et —12dB les niveaux
proches des fréquences indiquées au-dessus de
celles-ci.
Lorsque l'une de ces commandes est placée a sa
position centrale ‘’0’’, le niveau qui lui corres-
pond est laissé sans aucune modification. Le
niveau est augmenté a mesure que ces com-
mandes sont glissées vers le haut, tandis qu’il est
réduit a mesure qu’elles sont abaissées a partir
de la position centrale. On réglera chacun des
niveaux de fréquence selon ses préférences ou
les nécessités du local d‘écoute.
9 Uberspielschalter (DUBBING)

Bei der Wiedergabe einer Programmauelle wird
die Frequenzverteilung angezeigt, und wenn ein
Schallfeld gemessen wird, kann mit Hilfe dieser
Anzeige der Schallfeld-Frequenzgang des Sys-
tems auf einen Blick abgelesen werden.
12 Bereitschaftsanzeige (STAND BY)
Diese Anzeige leuchtet auf, wenn der Netz-
schalter (POWER) des Gerates auf ‘‘OFF’’ (Aus)
steht, um anzuzeigen, da die Hilfsstromversorg-
ung fur den Computerspeicher funktioniert.
13 Betriebsanzeige (BUSY)
Diese Anzeige leuchtet wahrend des Computer-
betriebs.
*Wenn Sie einen neuen Bedienungsschritt
durchfiihren, wahrend der Anzeiger erleuchtet

Operating procedures
“SOUND MENU”
SANSUI has provided this unit with four custom equalization curves,
called the ‘SOUND MENU.”
Any of the menus can be recalled by depressing the corresponding MEM-
ORY 1 ~ 4 switches.
The equalizing characteristics stored in each of the switches are as fol-
lows:
MEMORY 1: Equalization for a sound filled with verve and gutsiness;
suitable for rock music and pop.
MEMORY 2: Soft-sounding equalization;
music and relaxed listening.
MEMORY 3: Equalization for disco sound; extreme frequencies are em-
phasized for an improved dance beat and crisp treble.
MEMORY 4: Special equalization for car stereos and portable cassette
recorders with the emphasis on an expanded dynamic range and more
forceful bass.
* When custom equalizations are entered into the MEMORY 1 ~ 4
switches using the MEMORY “SET” switch, the ‘SOUND MENU" is
temporarily erased. However, it is available again when the SE-9 is
unplugged from the power outlet and then plugged in again.

Depress the POWER switch and turn on the power.

3. When listening to a disk or broadcast, select the source with the
amplifier’s function selector and operate the turntable or tuner. De-
press the TAPE MONITOR “SOURCE” switch and the DUBBING
“SOURCE” switch.
When listening to a tape, depress the TAPE MONITOR ’’ TAPE-1” or
‘"TAPE-2” switch in accordance with the connections of the tape
deck being used.
4. Set the amplifier’s tape monitor switch to the ‘‘tape’’ position. Rotate
the OUTPUT LEVEL controls to the right so as to minimize the
volume difference during the switchover.
5. Adjust the sound volume with the volume control on the amplifier.
6. Refer to the different kinds of equalization in the ‘‘SOUND MENU"
and depress one of the MEMORY 1 ~ 4 switches. The computer now
takes over and the equalizer controls are set automatically .
7. The mode is now selected with the DISPLAY switches wnen monitor-
ing the signals using the spectrum analyzer.
* If the EQUALIZER “DEFEAT” switch is depressed, you will be able
to hear the sound before compensation.
* Do not touch equalizer controls while the computer is operating since
this will unnecessarily tax the computer mechanism.
Storing the equalizations in the memory
Up to four custom equalizations can be stored in this unit, and when so
required, they can be recalled at the push of a switch.
Store the equalizations in the memory as follows.
1. Reproduce the music and adjust the equalizer controls so that the re-
quired equalization is obtained.
2. Depress the MEMORY “SET” switch and select one of the MEMORY
1 ~ 4 switches so that the indicator does not go off. T he indicator
above the depressed switch now lights to indicate that te set equal-
ization has been stored in the memory.
3. Whenever the stored equalization is required, it cam be recalled by the
computer operation merely by depressing the correspymding MEM-
ORY 1 ~ 4 switch.
* The “SOUND MENU" in the switches is erased when atustom equal- .
iZation is stored in the MEMORY 1 ~ 4 switches.
* When the unit’s power plug is disconnected and then reco nnected and
the POWER switch is set to ON, the custom equalization stored in
the switch is erased and the ‘SOUND MENU” is made ayaailable again. -
