TheGPSreceiverissuitableforthemobilenavigationserviceofferedbyvariouspartnersonmany
Bluetoothenabledmobiles.TheGPSreceiverusesitsownbuilt‐inbattery,doesn'tdrainyourmobile's
batteryandallowsyoutouseitoutsideyourvehicle.ThecarchargercablechargesyourGPSreceiver
whiledriving.YoucanalsochargethebatteryofyourGPSreceiverinapowersocketwithamains
adapterbeforetravel,ajourneyorabicycleormotorcycletour.
ThisGPSreceiverisastate‐ of‐ the‐ artdeviceofthehighestquality.ThankstobatteryandBluetooth
technology,youcanusetheGPSreceivercompletelycablefree.Inadditiontothisthebuilt‐in
automaticshutdownensuresalongoperatingtime.TheSiRFStarIIIchipsetinstalledhasverylowpower
consumptionandoffersthehighestlevelsofGPSsensitivity.

2. GeneralInformation
2.1WhatisGPS?
TheGPS(GlobalPositioningSystem)satellitesystemwasoriginallysetupbytheMinistryofDefenseof
theUnitedStatesofAmericainordertoimproveprecisecontrolformilitarypurposes.TheUScongress
grantedfundsatthattimeforsettingupthesystem,howeveronlyontheconditionthatitwasalso
madeavailableforfreecivilianuse.
GPSsatellitessendtwodivergentsignals:anencoded,veryprecisesignalforNATO(P)andan
unencryptedsignalforcivilianpurposes,i.e.foreveryone(L1).YourGPSreceivercanreceivethe
unencryptedsignalforcivilianpurposes(L1).TheciviliansignalcanbeusedbymeansofGPSreceivers
byanyone,atanytime,world‐wideandlicensefreee.g.forvehiclenavigation.
AlsotheGPSsatellitesysteminEuropeisoperatedbytheGovernmentoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica
whichalsohasexclusiveresponsibilityfortheaccuracyandmaintenanceofthesystem.Thesystemis
constantlyimprovedandmodificationscanconsequentlyinfluencetheaccuracyandtheperformanceof
theGPSreceiver.
Achievableaccuracyfortheciviliansignaliscurrentlyabout10meters.Before2ndMay2000thissignal
wasintentionallyfalsifiedbytheUSA(SA,SelectiveAvailability)andachievableaccuracywas100mat
thattime."SelectiveAvailability"orSAistheartificialdegradationofthesatellitesignalbytheUS
military.Thesignalcancurrentlystillbeartificiallyfalsifiedinemergencies.Thiscanleadtosubstantial
impairmentswiththeuseofyourGPSreceiverandmakeitunusable,atleasttemporarily,forcertain
applications,e.g.navigation.SatGuidehasnoinfluenceonthis.
Thereareabout30satellites(24satellitespluscorrectionandreservesatellites)onsixpathsin
circulation,ofwhichupto12canbepresentoverthehorizon.YourGPSreceiverhas20channelsand
canthereforereceivesignalsfromall12satellitesatthesametime,aslongasitisinvisualcontactwith
them,resultinginoptimizedcalculationoftheGPSreceiver'sposition.
WheneveryourGPSreceiverhasaccesstoaclearsky,itcandetermineitsposition,directionandspeed
withinashortperiodoftime.ThickcloudsandheavyrainfallcanimpairGPSreception.Thetimeittakes
toestablishinitialcontacttothesatellites(Time‐ to‐ First‐ Fix,TTFF)isreducedconsiderablybyan
assistedGPSfunctionalityinSatGuideandcantakefewsecondswhentheassistedfunctionalityis
availableandaccesstoclearskyisunobstructedorseveralminuteswhenconditionsarenotoptimal.

2.2WhatisBluetooth?
Bluetoothisanopenstandardforanewandeffectivetechnologyforwirelesscommunicationbetween
desktopsandlaptops,PDAs,mobilephones,cameraphones,printers,digitalcameras,computermice,
keyboards,GPSreceiversetc.
WirelessBluetoothtechnologyusesagloballyavailablefrequency(2.4GHz)inordertoguarantee
worldwidecompatibility.Inshort:BluetoothmakesyourGPSreceivercablefreeandmakesmessycable
connectionsathingofthepast.WiththeBluetoothtechnologyintegratedintoyourGPSreceiveryou
canconnecttoaBluetoothenabledmobilephone–wirelessly–withinaradiusofabout10m.
3. SafetyNotes
ThischaptercontainsimportantinformationforthesafeandreliableuseoftheSatGuidenavigation
softwarewithyourmobilephoneandthecorrespondingGPSreceiveranditsaccessories.Pleaseread
thissectioncarefullybeforeyoustartusingthesoftwareandanyofthedevices.
WhenusingtheSatGuidenavigationsoftwarewithyourmobilephoneorlaptop,thecorrespondingGPS
receiveranditsaccessories,makesuretoobservegeneralprecautionarysafetynotessuchasthose
specifiedbelowinordertoavoidfire,electricalshocks,personalinjuriesorotherdamages.
Makesuretoalsoobservethesafetynotesforyourmobilephone.Youcanfindtheseintheuser
manualforyourmobilephone.
¾Switchingon/offorsettingup
TheBluetoothGPSreceiverisoperatedbypressingtheon/offbuttononthesideoftheGPS
receiver.DonotusetheGPSreceiverand/oryourmobilephoneiftheuseofelectronicdevicesor
mobilephonesisprohibited,couldleadtointerferenceordanger.
¾Vehicles
RFsignalscansometimesimpairthefunctionofincorrectlyinstalledorinsufficientlyshielded
electronicsystemsinyourvehicle(e.g.electronicallycontrolledfuelinjectionsystems,electronic
ABSsystems(anti‐ skidsystems),electronicspeedregulators,andairbagsystems).Youcanobtain
informationaboutyourvehiclefromyourvehiclemanufactureroritsrepresentative.Youshould
alsoconsultmanufacturersofanydevicesoraccessoriessubsequentlyfittedinyourvehicle.
¾RoadSafetyFirst!
Alwayssecureyourmobilephoneinasuitableholderwhichenablesyoutoseethedisplaywithout
beingdistractedfromthetrafficsituation.Makesuretheinstallationofthemobilephoneholder,
GPSreceiverandcarchargercableoranyothercablesoraccessoriesinthevehicleinteriordoesnot
obstructthedriver'sviewandnopassengersafetysystems(likeairbags,seatbelts,pedals,controls
etc.)areobstructedorfunctionimpaired.TosecuretheGPSreceiverusetheprovidedmagnetic
holder,whichcanbeattachedtothedashboardofyourcarusingthedoublesidedstickytape
provided.Pleasemakesurethatthemobilephoneholderisattachedsafelyandthatyourmobile
phoneissecuredproperlyinthemobilephoneholder.

Keepthespaceinfrontandontopoftheairbagsabsolutelyclear.Makesurethatnopartsor
objectscanbetossedaround.
WhiledrivingconcentrateonlyonthetrafficandneverusetheGPSreceiverandyourmobilephone
whileyouareinmotion.Askyourpassengertousethemorifyouaredrivingonyourown,usethem
onlywhenyourvehicleisstationary.Thesameappliestotheadjustmentanduseofthecarmobile
phoneholder.
Followthedirectionsonlyiftrafficrulesandactualtrafficconditionspermitit.
Makesurethatyoualwayskeepcontrolofyourvehicleinalltrafficconditions.
¾Interference
MobilephonesandGPSreceivers,especiallytheBluetoothmodel,canbeaffectedbyinterference

Keepthemdry.DonotuseyourmobilephoneortheGPSreceiveranditsaccessoriesinthe
proximityofwaterorinrooms/areaswithhighhumidity.Donotpourliquidsontoyourmobile
phoneortheGPSreceiveranditsaccessoriesanddonotimmersetheminwater.TheGPSreceiver
isnotintendedforuseontheoutsideofavehicle(e.g.ontheroofofacar).
¾HighTemperaturesandFire
DonotuseyourmobilephoneortheGPSreceiveranditsaccessoriesintheproximityoffireanddo
notexposethemtotemperatureshigherthan60°C(45°Cwhencharging).Donotexposeyour
mobilephoneortheGPSreceiveranditsaccessoriestodirectsunlight,inparticularnotinyour
vehicle.DonotstoreyourmobilephoneortheGPSreceiveranditsaccessoriesincold
temperatures,inparticularnotunder0°C.
¾Cleaning
Beforeyoustartcleaninganyofthedevicesmakesureyourmobilephone,theGPSreceiverandits
accessoriesareswitchedoffcompletely.Presstheon/offbuttononthesideoftheGPSreceiverto
turnitoff.DisconnecttheGPSreceiverfromthecarchargercableandcigarettelightersocketor
fromthemainsadapterandmainssocketbeforecleaning.Donotuseliquidoraerosolcleanersto
cleanyourmobilephone,theGPSreceiveroritsaccessories.Adampclothissufficient.
¾Children
Donotpermitchildrentoplaywithyourmobilephone,theGPSreceiveroritsaccessories.Theyare
nottoys–childrencouldhurtthemselvesorothers.Yourmobilephone,theGPSreceiverandits

MostmodernelectronicdevicesareshieldedagainstHFsignals(radiofrequency).Itcanhappen
howeverthatcertainelectronicdevicesarenotshieldedagainsttheHFsignalsofyourGPSreceiver.
¾Cardiacpacemaker
Thefollowingappliestopeoplewithacardiacpacemaker:
Youshouldalwaysobserveaminimumdistanceof20cmbetweenyourmobilephoneorGPS
receiverandyourcardiacpacemaker,ifyourmobilephoneortheGPSreceiverareswitchedon.

Yourmobilephone,theGPSreceiveranditsaccessoriesmustbedisposedofcorrectlyorrecycled

4. FirstSteps
4.1Chargingthebuilt–inbattery
UsingtheCarChargerCable:
Plugthechargercableintothecigarettelightersocketofyourcar(12Vto24V).Dependingonthecar
youmighthavetoturntheignitionkeytoposition1or2inordertopowerthecigarettelighter.Please
checkyourcar'susermanualforfurtherinformation.
ATTENTION:
Makesureyouobservethenotesinchapter3"SafetyNotes"page5beforeusingtheGPSreceiver
forthefirsttime.
ATTENTION:
UsethecarchargercableonlyforchargingyourGPSreceiverasdescribedinthisusermanualand
notforchargingmobilesorotherdevices.Thebatteryisbuilt‐inandcanonlybechargedinsidethe

chargedtheyellowlightinthebatterydisplaydisappears.Thedeviceisthenreadyforuse.Please

cigarettelightersocketorthemainsadapterfromthemainssocket.
ForlongbatterylifetheGPSreceiverhastotaldischargeprotection.About15minutesbeforeautomatic
shutdownthebatterydisplayshowsaredlight.Pleasechargethebatterypromptly.

out.Iftheoperatingtimeisclearlyshorterthannormallythebatterymustbechangedbyaqualified

between15°Cand25°C.AGPSreceiverwithabatterythatistoocoldortoohotmaynotfunction
temporarily,evenifthebatteryisfullycharged.Batteryperformanceislimitedinparticularwhen
temperaturesarebelowfreezingpoint.
ATTENTION:
DonotleavethechargingcableconnectedtothechargingsocketoftheGPSreceiverlongerthan
necessaryasoverchargingcanshortenitslifespan.Whennotusedafullychargedbatterywill
dischargeovertime.
DonotleavethecarchargercableintheGPSreceiversocketorthecigarettelightersocket

4.2SwitchingtheGPSreceiveronandoff
Presstheon/offbuttonforapproximately3secondstoswitchthedeviceonoroff.
Pleasemakesureyourbatteryhasenoughpowerwhenusingit.Shouldthebatterypowerrunlow

4.3Thebuilt‐inbattery
ATTENTION:
DonotswitchyourmobilephoneandtheGPSreceiveroniftheuseofelectronicdevicesaswellas
mobilephonesisprohibited,canleadtointerferenceordanger.

TheGPSreceiverhasaninternalbatterywhichcannotberemoved.Donottrytoremovethe
battery.Wronghandlingcancausethebatterytoexplode.Onlyqualifiedcustomerservice
personnelshouldchangeadefectivebattery.Thebatterymustbedisposedoforrecycledaccording
tothelocalenvironmentalregulations.

4.4Normaloperatingposition
TheGPSreceiverissecuredtothedashboardusingthesuppliedmagneticholder.Fixthemagnetic
holderinthemiddleofthedashboard,usingthesupplieddoublesidedtape.Thesurfacemustbeeven,
cleananddry.Cleanthesurfacebeforehand.Payattentiontothecleaningrecommendationsforthe
GPSreceiver(chapter7"ServicingandMaintenance")andthecleaningrecommendationsforthe
dashboard.
Whiledrivingconcentrateonlyonthetraffic,neverusetheGPSreceiverandyourmobilephonewhen
driving.Leavetheoperationofthedevicetoyourpassengeror,whentravellingalone,usetheGPS
receiverandmobilephoneonlywhenstationary.
Followtheinstructionsonlyifthetrafficregulationsandthecurrenttrafficsituationpermitit.
Makesurethatyouarealwaysincontrolofyourvehicleinalltrafficsituations.
ATTENTION:
Wecannotguaranteethesuccessfulfixationofthemagneticholder,aswehavenoinfluenceon
thesurfaceormaterialofyourcar'sdashboard.Whenremovingthemagneticholderfromthe
dashboardatalaterpointmakesurethatyoudonotdamageit.
Ifthetapeunderthemagneticholderlosesitsstickinessduetoexposureto
thesunthenpleaseexchangeit.

Pleasenotethat,whenusingtheGPSreceiverforthefirsttimesynchronizationwiththesatellites
stronglydependsonthedirectandunobstructedexposuretothesky.Thetimeittakestoestablish
initialcontacttothesatellites(Time‐ to‐ First‐ Fix,TTFF)isreducedconsiderablybyanassistedGPS
functionalityinSatGuideandcantakefewsecondswhentheassistedfunctionalityisavailableand

GOODTOKNOW
ForbestGPSreceptionyourvehicleshouldbeunderclearskiesandifpossiblenotbepositioned
undertrees,onroadssurroundedbyhigh‐ risebuildingsorinatunnel.Thebetterandless
obstructedtheviewtothesky,thebetterthesatellitedatareception.Fortheinitialsatellite
searchitmayalsobehelpfultostopyourcarforafewminutesandnotdrivearound.

IftheGPSreceiverhasbeenswitchedonandisreadyforuse,thefollowinglightsaredisplayed:
¾Bluetoothdisplay(blue)flashesirregularandshowsthattheGPSreceiverisreadyfora
Bluetoothconnection.AssoonasthemobilephonehasestablishedaBluetoothconnectiontothe
GPSreceiver,thedisplaylightsupcontinuously.
¾GPSdisplay(green)flashesandthusshowsthattheGPSreceiverislookingforsatellites,but
hasnotfoundanyyet.ItmeanstheGPSreceiverisnotyetuseablee.g.forpositioning.Assoonasit
hasfoundsatellites,thisdisplaylightsupgreencontinuously–thismeansthedeviceisreceiving
validGPSsignals.
