GettingAcquainted
ThePS3IR‐1000hasseveralfeaturesthatrequireyoutobefamiliarwiththedevicelayoutand
terminology.Thepicturebelowiswhatyourdevicelookslikefromthetop.Therearethreeconnectors
ontheback,fromlefttorighttheseare:
•IR,a3½mmfemaleconnectorusedtoconnecttoanexternalIRsource(IRRepeater).
•USB,aminiUSBconnectorusedtopoweryourdeviceorconnecttoyourPCforvarious
configurationandsupportreasons.
•PS,a2½mmfemaleconnectorusedtoconnecttothePS3foroptionalexternalpowersensing.
Thestatuslight,intheSchmartzlogo,willbeonwhenpowerisappliedandwillflashascommandsare
beingprocessed.Thestatuslightwillhelpyouverifythatthedeviceisoperatingproperly.
TheIRwindowisonthefrontofthedevice.Thiswindowmusthavelineofsightwithyourremote
controlinorderfortheinternalsensorto“see”theIRcommands.

Bydefault,thePS3IR‐1000receivessignalsfromyourremotecontrolusingitsinternalIRsensor.
Optionally,thePS3IR‐1000canreceivesignalsfromanIRrepeater(allbrandsaresupported).

ThePS3IR‐1000keepstrackofthepowerstatusofthePS3internally.Itispossibletolosepropertrack
ofpowerstatusduetomanualoperations(suchasinsertingaDVD).ForidealtrackingofPS3power
status,youmayusethepowersensingfeature.ThisfeaturerequiresacablebetweenthePS3andthe
PS3IR‐1000.Youmaymakethiscableyourself(seediagrambelow)orpurchasethiscableseparately
fromSchmartz.
Connections:
•MakesureyourPS3isatfirmwarelevel2.20orhigher.
•ConnectthepowersensingcablebetweenanyPS3USBportandthePS3IR‐1000PSport.

Trainingyouruniversalremote
Trainingauniversalremoterequirestworemotecontrols.The“teachingremote”referstotheremote
controlthatisprovidingthetrainingcommands.Fortheremainderofthisdiscussionthe“training
remote”referstoacombinationofthePS3IR‐1000andyourcomputerrunningthePS3IR‐1000Utility.
ThiswillserveasthePS3remotecontrol.The“learningremote”referstoyouruniversalremoteas
illustratedinthefollowingdiagram.
UsethefollowingproceduretotrainyouruniversalremotewithPS3commands:
•ConnectthePS3IR‐1000toyourcomputer,startthePS3IR‐1000Utilityandselectthe“Teach”
tab.
•PointthePS3IR‐1000IRwindowattheUniversalRemoteIRwindow.
•Refertothedocumentationforyouruniversalremotetodeterminehowyouruniversalremote
istrained.
•Whenthedocumentationreferstothe“TeachingRemote”,usethecorrespondingbuttonson
thePS3IR‐1000Utilityremote.

UserMacros
Usermacrosareaseriesofcommandsthatcanbedefinedonceandthenusedoverandoverto
automatefrequentlyusedfunctionssuchaslaunchingyourfavoritegame,listeningtomusic,or
displayingaslideshow.Tocreateoreditamacro,simplyconnectyourPS3IR‐1000toyourcomputer
andruntheUtilitytool.OncetheUtilitytoolisrunningclickonthe“Macro”tabtorevealthemacro
pageoftheUtilitytool.
CreatingMacros
Onthemacropageyouwillfindtwosettingsthatapplytoallmacrosinaglobalfashion.Astheauthor
ofmacros,youcancontrolhowlongacommandkeyispressed(KeyDuration)andhowmuchdelay
existsbetweenthekeys(InterkeyDelay).Thefieldsforthesevaluesareintheupperrightsectionofthe
macropage.Youmayleavethesystemdefaultsorsetyourownvaluestoyourownneeds.Thevalues
inthesefieldsarein1/10secondintervals.Youmayspecifyavaluefrom1to250meaningtime
intervalsassmallas1/10secupto25seconds.Ifyouclickthe“RestoreDefaultSettings”button,the
factorydefaultvaluewillbesetinbothKeyDurationandInterkeyDelayfields.
Macrosaremadeupofaseriesofsteps.Eachstepcanbe:
•SendaKeywithanoptionalduration(AllPS3remotekeysaresupported)
•Delayexecutionforaspecifiedduration
•Issueanothermacro(canNOTissuethismacrofromwithinthismacro)
Youcandefineupto12macros,eachofwhichmaybeupto16steps.ThePS3IR‐1000willdetectand
prevent“neverending”macros.
ThereareseveralbuttonsandselectorboxesontheUtilitytoolrelatingtomacros.Theyare:

•Selectorbox“MacroNumber”–Usethistoselectwhichofthe12macrosyouwanttocreateor
edit.
•Therearetwobuttonstoclear(erase)macros.Thesebuttonsare:
oClearThisMacro–clearsthemacroselectedintheMacroNumberselectorbox.
oClearAllMacros–clearsall12macros.
WARNING:TheClearbuttonsarepermanentandcannotbeundone.
•ExecuteThisMacro–thisbuttonwillexecutetheselectedmacroifthePS3IR‐1000isproperly
pairedwithaPS3thatiswithinBluetoothreceiverrange.IfthePS3isnotavailabletoyouthen
youwillhavetotestthemacrousingyouruniversalremoteandPS3atalatertime.
•LoadfromFile–thisbuttonloadsall12macrosfromapredefinedlocationonyourcomputer.
•SavetoFile–Savesall12macrosfromyourPS3IR‐1000toapredefinedlocationonyour
computer.Ofcourseyouwillwanttocreatesomemacrosbeforesavingthem☺.
Tobegintheprocessofcreatingamacro,firstthinkaboutwhatyouwantthePS3todoandhowyou
wouldaccomplishthetaskusingaremotecontrol.Youmayconsiderjottingthestepsonapieceof
paperandtestingyourplanusingthePS3andaremotecontrol.Afterplanningyourmacro,youare
readytostartcreatingthemacrowiththeUtilitytool.StartbyselectingtheMacroNumberyouwishto
create.Startingwithstep1selectthecommandyouwishtousefirst.Thescreenshotbelowshows
thatstep1ofMacro1willbethecommandkey“Play”.Witheachcommandyoumayoptionallyspecify
durationin1/10secondintervals.Specifyingdurationforeachcommandwilltakeextraspaceandmay
reducethenumberofstepsavailableforthismacro.Ifyoudonotspecifyduration,thedefaultduration
isused.Repeattheprocessofselectingacommandkeyforeachmacrostepuntilyouaredoneentering
yourmacro(upto16steps).Therearenospecialrequirementstoendamacro–whenyouaredone
issuingcommands,leavetherestofthemacrostepsblank.

UsingMacros
ThePS3IR‐1000understandsIRcommandsforMacrokeys1through12.Youruniversalremotewillhave
tobetaughtthesekeysandmappedtolocationsofyourchoiceinyourparticularuniversalremote
beforeyoucanissueyourmacrocommandviayouruniversalremote.Ifyouhavenotdonethatstep,
youcanstilltestyourmacrousingthe“ExecuteThisMacro”buttonandyourPS3.
Whenplanningyourmacros,keepinmindthatamacrocanuseanothermacro.Ifthereareaseriesof
stepsthatarecommontoseveraltasks,youcanprefectthisseriesofstepsandsaveitasamacrothat
canbeusedoverandover.
TheremaybecasesindevelopingmacrosthatyouwanttowaittogivethePS3timetoperformalong
operation(perhapspoweruporloadingagame).Forthecasesthatyouwanttoinsertadeliberate
delayinyourmacro,thereisacommandinthedropdownlistofcommandscalled“Delay”.Thisisnot
actuallyaPS3commandbutitisacommandtothePS3IR‐1000.Inthiscaseyouwouldusetheduration
tosetthetimetowait.Ifyouwanteda15seconddelay,youwouldentera150inthedurationfield
withthemacrostepthatcontainedthe“Delay“command.

FirmwareUpdates
FromtimetotimeSchmartzmaydeterminethatfirmwareupdatesarerequiredtokeepthePS3IR‐1000
operatingproperlyortoaddnewfeatures.ItwillbenecessarytoattachthePS3IR‐1000toyour
computerandrunthePS3IR‐1000Utilitytooltotakeadvantageofthenewfirmware.
Toobtainthelatestfirmware,gotoSchmartz.com,locatethePS3IR‐1000Utilitytoolandclickonthe
linktostarttheprogramrunningonyourworkstation.YoumayplugthePS3IR‐1000intoyourcomputer
beforeorafterstartingthePS3IR‐1000Utility.TheUtilitytoolwilllocateyourPS3IR‐1000and
automaticallyupdateyourfirmwareasneeded.
Whenyouarefinished,youmayunplugyourPS3IR‐1000andreturnittoitspermanentlocation.

PS3IR1000isnotworkingatall.
Diagnosegeneralproblemssystematically:
1) IsthePS3IR‐1000poweredupproperly?Isthestatuslightonsolid?
Ifyes–gotostep2.
Ifno–PlugUSBcableintoanypoweredUSBport.Considerusing:
•Satellitereceiver
•DVR/TIVO
•Nearbycomputer
•OthercomponentwithaUSBport
•USBcharger
Makesuretheselectedcomponentispluggedintoaworkingpoweroutlet.DonotuseaPS3
USBportforpowerasthoseportsarenotpoweredwhenthePS3isinstandby.Ifthesesteps
fail,replacetheUSBcable.
Ifyouareunabletogetthestatuslighton,contactSchmartzforhelp.
2) IsthePS3IR‐1000receivingandprocessingIRcommands?IfyouareusingInternalIRmode,set
yourremotecontroltoaddressthePS3andclickbuttonsontheremotetosendIRcommands.
Ifthestatuslightflashesbrieflywhenyouclickabuttonontheremote,thentheunitisreceiving
andprocessingIRcommands.IfyouareusingIRexternalmode,thestatuslightshouldflash
whenIRcommandsaredeliveredthroughtheIRRepeater.IfthestatuslightisflashingwhenIR
commandsaredeliveredtothePS3IR‐1000gotostep3.
Ifthestatuslightisnotflashing,consider:
•IsyourremotecontrolproperlyprogrammedwithPS2codes?Seetheinstallation
instructions.
•Istheremotecontrolworking(i.e.,willitoperateotherdevicesproperly)?
•IstheremotecontrolsettoaddressthePS3IR‐1000?
•IsthereanunobstructedlineofsightbetweentheremotecontrolandthePS3IR‐1000?
•IsthePS3IR‐1000setupforExternalIR?ThefactorydefaultsettingisforinternalIR
processing.IfyouhaverunthePS3IR‐1000Utility,youmayhavesetIRinputto
External.

3) IsthePS3IR‐1000properlypairedwithyourPS3?Assumingthestatuslightflashesinresponse
toIRcommandsandthePS3isnotacceptingcommandsfromthePS3IR‐1000,youhavetore‐do
thepairingprocedure.(Refertotheinstallationinstructions).Afterparing,ifthestatuslight
flashesandthePS3isnotresponding,contactSchmartzforhelp.

Problem:IissueacommandfromthePS3IR‐1000topoweroffthePS3butthePS3doesnotshutoff.
Solution:IfyouhaveenabledpowersensinginthePS3IR‐1000buthavenotconnectedthepower
sensingcable,thePS3IR‐1000willneverpoweroffthePS3.Tocorrectthis,connectthepowersensing
cableordisablethepowersensingfeature.
Remoteoperatesinconsistently,rangenotsatisfactory
Problem:MyremoteworkssometimesorIhavetomoveclosertothePS3IR‐1000.
Solution:MostIRremotecontrolsshouldoperatecorrectlyupto25feet.Putnewbatteriesinthe
remotecontroltomakesuretheyarefresh.Makesurethereisanunobstructedviewbetweenthe
remoteandthePS3IR‐1000.AvoidbrightsunlightorverybrightincandescentlightnearthePS3IR‐1000.
PlasmaTVscreensmayalsointerferewithoperationofIRremotecontrols.
PS3powersupunexpectedly
Problem:ThePS3powersupunexpectedly.UsuallywhenIamshuttingeverythingdown,thePS3
comeson.
Solution:ThePS3IR‐1000normallykeepstrackofthePS3powerstatusinternally.Ifyouhavedone
anythingmanuallytothePS3thataffectspowerthatthePS3IR‐1000isunawareof(poweredoffPS3
usingagamecontroller,usemanualpowerswitchorinsertaDVD),thePS3IR‐1000maybeoutofsync
regardingpowerstatus.Ifthesemanualsituationsresultinanundesirableoperatingenvironment,you
canusetheoptionalpowersensingfeatureofthePS3IR‐1000andconnectapowersensingcable
betweenthePS3IR‐1000andthePS3.Withthepowersensingfeatureenabledandproperlyconnected,
unexpectedpowerupiseliminated.
Powersensingnotworkingproperly
Problem:IamusingpowersensingbutPS3notpoweringup/downcorrectly.
Solution:ProperoperationofPS3IR‐1000powersensingdependsontwothings:
•ConnectingapowersensingcablebetweenthePS3(anyUSBportandthePS3IR‐1000PSport).
Verifythatthiscableisconnectedproperly.
•Verifythatpowersensingisenabled(SeePS3POWERSENSINGsection.)

RegulatoryCompliance
ThePS3IR‐1000complieswithPart15oftheFCCRules.Operationissubjecttothefollowingtwoconditions:
1. Thisdevicemaynotcauseharmfulinterference
2. Thisdevicemustacceptanyinterferencereceived,includinginterferencethatmaycauseundesired
operation.
ChangesormodificationsnotexpresslyapprovedbySchmartzInc.couldvoidtheauthoritytooperatethe
equipment.
NOTE:ThisequipmenthasbeentestedandfoundtocomplywiththelimitsforaClassBdigitaldevice,
pursuanttoPart15oftheFCCRules.Theselimitsaredesignedtoprovidereasonableprotectionagainst
harmfulinterferenceinaresidentialinstallation.Thisequipmentgenerates,usesandcanradiateradio
frequencyenergyand,ifnotinstalledandusedinaccordancewiththeinstructions,maycauseharmful
interferencetoradiocommunications.However,thereisnoguaranteethatinterferencewillnotoccurina
particularinstallation.
Ifthisequipmentdoescauseharmfulinterferencetoradioortelevisionreception,whichcanbedetermined
byturningtheequipmentoffandon,theuserisencouragedtotrytocorrecttheinterferencebyoneormore
ofthefollowingmeasures:
•Reorientorrelocatethereceivingantenna.
•Increasetheseparationbetweentheequipmentandreceiver.
•Connecttheequipmentintoanoutletonacircuitdifferentfromthattowhichthereceiveris
connected.
•Consultthedealeroranexperiencedradio/TVtechnicianforhelp.
