Before starti g to work with the SEA 9405 GPS Module please read the
complete hardware a d software user ma ual a d the followi g i forma-
tio carefully.
We believe that all i formatio i this ma ual is accurate. The docume t
has bee carefully reviewed for tech ical accuracy. I the eve t of tech ic-
al or typographical errors, we reserve the right to make cha ges to sub-

The reader should co sult the ve dor if errors are suspected.
Before usi g or operati g a y SEA GPS Module a d the provided
software you have to agree to the terms a d co ditio s. If you do
NOT agree you ca rese d the hardware a d software package
withi a period of two weeks after delivery. I this case S.E.A. will
refu d the product price a d shippi g costs.

is provided o the I stallatio CD ROM. Please read the ma ual
chapters: Disclaimer, Limitation of Liability, a d User esponsibil-
ities before usi g the device.

The SEA 9405 module provides a battery switch o the side. Usi g
the switch the battery ca be switched O or OFF. The battery
should be switched OFF, whe module is ot co eted to a power
supply (i.e. for storage) for lo ger tha 48 h.

Safety Guidelines
Operate the SEA GPS Module o ly as described i this operatio i struc-
tio s a d the SEA GPS Module user ma ual. Please check the S.E.A. web-
site for updates of this ma ual or tech ical specificatio s.
Hot or old
Surface
Operated i hot or cold e viro me ts less tha 10
°C or higher tha 30 °C the metallic surface of the
module might become hot or cold as well.
Touchi g the surface may result i bodily i jury.
Do ot dismou t the module from the chassis dur-
i g operatio . Wait u til the module temperature
has reached 20 °C.
Do ot disco ect I/O – wires or co ectors u less power has
bee switched completely off a d the area is k ow to be o haz-
ardous.

Safety Guidelines for Hazardous Locations
The SEA GPS Modules are suitable for use i o hazardous locatio s
o ly. If u sure co tact your ve dor.
Please ote:
Do ot use for medical applicatio s.
Do ot use for auto omous avigatio a d/or co trol of a y
vehicle (e.g. pla es, cars, trai s, boats etc.).
Do ot use i safety critical applicatio s.

Operator Protection
To protect perso s agai st a y harm, the followi g rules have to be
obeyed:
Use a y part or the complete system o ly i dry areas. Do ot op-
erate the SEA GPS Module i bath areas, kitche s etc., where wa-
ter or vapour ca be i co tact with the module, cables, or a te -
as.
Use o ly isolated power supplies with a omi al voltage of 12 V
DC, which are made to be used with CompactRIO systems.
It is ot allowed to use the system for a y ki d of medical applica-
tio or live supporti g apparatus.
All SEA GPS Modules may ot be operated i hospitals or similar
e viro me ts.
Keep the module a d the a te a at least 1 meter away from hu-
ma bodies duri g operatio .
The module must ot be operated i explosive areas.

Prerequisites
To use the SEA GPS Module withi the National Instruments Compact IO
system the followi g additio al hardware is required:

Installing
Before i serti g the SEA 9405 GPS Module i the CompactRIO chassis,
please disco ect a y co ectors to the CompactRIO system a d switch-
off the power supply. Make sure worki g i a ESD safe e viro me t.

The SEA 9405 GPS Module offers the followi g co ectors a d i dicators:

Wiring the SEA GPS Module
Follow the steps described below to co ect the peripheral compo e ts
to the fro t side of the SEA 9405 GPS Module.
1. Disco ect the CompactRIO system
2. GPS a te a
Co ect the GPS a te a to the GPS a te a co ector socket.
Use only antennas supplied for use with this module.
3. Sy c Output co ector
Co ect this output to a y TTL compatible PPS Timepulse i put.

Receiver Operation and Antenna Installation
The word receiver is used i tercha geably with the word GPS module
module, a d mea s the RF-receiver or RF-receiver part of the GPS module.
The a te a has to be properly mou ted at the desired locatio .
If a roof a te a is used, the a te a has to be dismou ted whe light-
i g strikes are likely. The SEA GPS Module a d a y a te a or cabli g is
NOT protected agai st light i g strikes or a y over-voltage. Do NOT oper-
ate the tra smitter or a te a duri g thu derstorms, a d keep the a -
te a away from a y ki d of elevatio . Keep the system away from haz-
ardous locatio s, explosive- or high voltage areas.
Protect your system from thu derstorm a d light i g strikes.
To mi imize the radio freque cy exposure to huma s, the followi g rules
have to be atte ded:
Whe operati g the tra smitter, cabli g a d a te as, it is ma -
datory to keep a dista ce of at least 1 m to perso s.
Use o ly a te a types, which are foresee for the use with the re-
ceiver. If u sure ask the module supplier.
Use o ly a te a cables a d co ectors made for GPS systems
a d freque cies.
Do ot operate the SEA GPS Module a d a te a ear other RF
systems.

Sleep Mode
The sleep mode ca be e abled for the CompactRIO system by software.
I sleep mode typically there is o commu icatio with the module. Power
co sumptio is mi imized. The system thermal dissipatio may decrease.

Specifications
