and permanent injury may result if proper precautions are not followed.
1. This equipment should never be operated by children or individuals that
are untrained or incapable of understanding these safety precautions!
2. Do not reach into the feed opening for any reason! Never insert fingers,
hands, other extremities or objects not meant to be crushed into the feed
opening!
3. Do not operate or come into close proximity to this equipment wearing
loose clothing, neckties, dangling jewelry or long hair which may
become entangled in the crushing chamber.
4. Maintenance or repair of this equipment should be performed only by
trained, authorized service personnel.
5. Always disconnect electric power (unplug) before removing or opening
any cover or other panels providing access to the internal mechanisms
6. Always wear gloves when working with the SSD anvil in place as it has
many sharp points
WARNING:
The Model 0101 is designed for crushing hard drives up to 1.85 inch thick. Trying to crush other objects or
material other then hard drives will void the warranty. SEM is not responsible for failure of this unit if
customer uses unit for something other than what is was intended for.

INSTALLATION AND SET-UP _______________
The SEM Model 0101 must be installed according to Customer’s incoming power.
110 volt Versions are equipped with a 15 Amp (3) three prong plug on the power cord.
220 volt Versions are equipped with a 10 Amp (2) two prong European plug on the power cord.
Note: 220 volt plugs may vary depending on location.
Important Note: Both 110 and 220 volt versions must be plugged into a grounded electrical line service.
STEP 1:
After removal of the packaging, place the system on a strong and sturdy surface. (Please note: ALL packaging
should be retained by customer for (30) days from the time of receipt. In the event that this unit needs to be
returned for replacement or repair, this packaging will be required to do so. Should the packaging have been
discarded before the (30) day requested period, packaging costs will be incurred by the customer).
STEP 2:
Be certain that all paperwork and any loose items that may have been shipped with the system have been removed
from the packaging as well.
STEP 3:
To avoid Hydraulic Fluid from leaking during shipment, the system is shipped with a RED “Shipping Plug”. Prior
to operation, this plug must be replaced with the BLACK “Breather Plug” (See plug pictures below).
DO NOT OPERATE THE SYSTEM WITH THE RED SHIPPING PLUG IN THE RESERVOIR!
How to replace the Reservoir “RED” Shipping Plug:
Access to reservoir plug is from the back side of the system cabinet. With the system still unplugged remove the
six (6) Phillips Head screws slide panel next to the system. Caution: The Power Cord is connected to the Back
Panel. DO NOT pull too hard on the panel when removing. Simply lean the panel on the side of the crusher
(See picture below).

STEP 4:
Once the Red Plug is removed and the Black Plug is installed, re-secure the access door by replacing the (6)
screws in the following sequence: Begin with the two bottom bolts, followed by the two top bolts and finally with
the two middle bolts (NOTE: you may need to squeeze the sides of the chassis to install the middle bolts).
STEP 5: With the Back Panel securely fastened, you can now “plug-in” the unit and operate the System.
NOTE: If reshipping or moving the unit, re-install the Red “Shipping Plug”. Wrap Teflon Tape around the plug
threads and tighten. This will help prevent the unit from leaking during shipment or movement.
Remove Back Panel by
un-screwing the six

Remove Shipping Plug (RED)
and replace with the Breather
Plug (BLACK) which is supplied
in the bag located in crushing
chamber.

HDD – OPERATION____
1. To begin crushing, open the front access door and place the hard drive into the crushing chamber.
Close the access door and press “RUN”. NOTE: the unit will not function if the access door is open.
Note: There are two channels inside the crushing chamber to properly align the hard drives inside the
chamber. Proper use of these channels will insure that the anvil is positioned for maximum effectiveness
by piercing /bending the “data holding” platters of the hard drive and not just pushing the center drive hub.

HDD - OPERATION Continued
Note: The Destruction Chamber “Depth” is extended to allow hard drives with most “caddies” typically
used in rack mount or server systems to be crushed without having to remove them from the caddy.
However, be sure to align all hard drive platters with the anvil before crushing.
2. With the access door closed, press the button marked “RUN”. The button will illuminate green. The motor
will activate and the piston will descend to pierce the hard drive in the crushing chamber. When the piston
has reached the end of the down stroke, it will start its upward movement. Upon completion of the cycle,
the green light will extinguish and the motor will deactivate. You can now remove the hard drive from the
chamber.
3. In the case of an emergency and you need to stop the unit, push the button labeled “STOP”. A red light
will then illuminate and the piston will return to the “Start” position. When the piston is in the “Start”
position, the red light will extinguish and the motor will deactivate.
Note: If the access door is opened during the crushing cycle, the piston will stop moving. When the access
door is reclosed, the operator will need to press the “RUN” or “STOP” button to restart the crushing cycle.
Warning: The debris that falls into the “Collection Draw” must be removed to ensure proper performance of
the system. SEM recommends that the draw be emptied after the crushing of each hard drive or as needed. If the
Draw does not get emptied, it could cause the hydraulic cylinder to fail and will void the warranty.

MANUAL OVERRIDE OPERATION
As the automated crushing operation for the SSD anvil requires it to perform a complete cycle before stopping,
a manual override method is acceptable for crushing SSD material in order to save the time wasted by allowing
the anvil to return to its resting position.
1. Insert material as shown above.
2. Press the green “RUN” push button and allow anvil to perform a normal operation.
3. After hearing the click, wait for the anvil to provide enough space to fit another piece, approximately
½”, and push the red “STOP” pushbutton, noting that the anvil will move downward a little bit after
hitting stop.
4. Open the door and remove the destroyed media.
Note: Gloves are recommended for this operation as the anvil has many sharp tines and the crushed
material may also be sharp.
5. Put another piece in the crushing chamber and close the door.
6. Push the green “RUN” pushbutton, and repeat.
Note: If the access door is opened during the crushing cycle, the piston will stop moving. When the access
door is reclosed, the operator will need to press the “RUN” or “STOP” button to restart the crushing cycle.
Warning: After each cycle the processed SSD media must be removed from the chamber. Sometimes the
media will stick to the anvil. Use a small regular screwdriver to separate the media from the anvil. Stacking
pieces of media for destruction, or failure to remove media after processing can damage the machine and will
void the warranty.
OVERLOADING
Should too much material be fed into the system, the high-pressure switch will engage and send the piston back
to the start position. Note: if this happens, the system would have not made a full cycle. As such, the hard drive
may need to be sent through again.
This may happen when crushing the 1.85 inch hard drive. You may want to remove and rotate the drive
by 180° and send it thru for another cycle.

HDD MAINTENANCE Continued
Replacing HDD Anvil: Tools needed: 7/8” and 1 1/2” Open-End Wrench (1 1/4” for older anvils)
Removing HDD Anvil:
1) With the system UN-PLUGGED, open the access door. Using a 1-1/4" Open-End Wrench, turn
cylinders shaft until the two flat edges on cylinder are perpendicular to door opening. This will allow the
7/8” open-end wrench to slide on cylinders shaft. See pictures below.
2) Pull Open-End Wrenches apart to loosen.
Installing/Swapping HDD Anvil:
1) Twist the anvil until the “lock washer” touches the base of the cylinders shaft.
Note: Do not tighten Anvil by hand once lock washer touches the base of the cylinder shaft
2) Place 7/8” and 1-1/4” Open-End Wrenches as shown below.
Note: May need to turn the anvil with 1-1/4” Open-End Wrench to align the 7/8” Open-End Wrench.
3) Using the “Flats Method” to torque Anvil, push Open-End Wrenches together to tighten. Proper setting
for Anvil will be 1 – 2 Flats. See pictures above. Note: If needed, mark the anvil before tightening with
wrenches.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Using anything other Open-End Wrenches will not give you the proper
torque for tightening the Anvil.
