energy reduces the risk of harm or complications, and contributes to your
overall safety.
3. Contraindications & warnings
The Skinera™ IPL device is not designed for everyone.
Hair removal by lasers or intense pulsed light sources can
cause increased hair growth in some individuals. Based
upon currently available data, the highest risk groups for
this response are females of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern
and South Asian heritage when used on the face and neck.
For more information visit www.skinera.eu.

Received radiation therapy or chemotherapy treatments within
the past 3 months.
Used physician-prescribed drugs on your skin within the past 6
months.
Any other condition which, in your physician’s opinion, would
make it unsafe for you to be treated.
6. Safety tips
This section has information to help you use your device safely.
6.1 Exposure to the sun
The lowest energy level (1) is designed for safe use even after sun
exposure.
If you use energy levels 2-5, avoid further exposure to the sun
for 4 weeks before and 2 weeks after your treatment. This is
because higher quantities of melanin expose the skin to greater
risk when using any method of light-based hair removal. This
applies to all skin types, even those that don't seem to tan
quickly.
To protect recently treated skin when exposed to sunlight, be
sure to thoroughly apply sunscreen SPF 30 or higher, for 2
weeks after each hair removal session.
6.2 Exposure of pulse light to the eyes
Although you can use the device to treat facial hair take extra
care to avoid contact with the eyes.
ENever use around or near the eyes. The device emits infra-red (IR) light
and may cause damage.
6.3 Wounds or infections
Wait for the aected area to heal before further use.

7. Possible side eects
If you follow the instructions fully and pay attention to all warnings and
contraindications, complications and side eects are uncommon. However
every cosmetic procedure, including those designed for home use, involves
some degree of risk. Therefore, it is important that you understand and accept
the risks and complications that may occur with pulsed light hair removal
systems designed for home use.
Minor skin discomfort
IPL hair removal is generally well-tolerated. However, some users feel mild
discomfort during use. This is best described as a mild stinging sensation
on the treated skin areas. The stinging sensation may last during or after
treatment.
Anything beyond this minor discomfort is abnormal. This means that
either you should stop using the Skinera™ IPL device because you are
unable to tolerate the hair removal application, or that the energy
level setting is too high.
Skin redness
Your skin may become red immediately after using the device or within 24
hours. Redness generally clears up within 24 hours.
See your doctor if redness does not go away within 2 to 3 days.
Make sure you use the energy level that is comfortable for you and suitable
for your skin colour.
Increased sensitivity of the skin
The skin of the treated area is more sensitive so you may encounter dryness
or aking of the skin.

ENEN
Pigment changes
The Skinera™ IPL device targets the hair shaft, in particular the pigmented
cells in the hair follicle and the hair follicle itself. Nevertheless there is a risk of
temporary hyperpigmentation (increased pigment or brown discolouration)
or hypo-pigmentation (whitening) to the surrounding skin. Risk of changes
in skin pigmentation is higher for people with darker skin tones or heavily
tanned skin. Usually discolouration or changes to skin pigment are
temporary, and permanent hyperpigmentation or hypo-pigmentation are
rare.
Excessive redness and swelling
In rare cases, treated skin may become very red and swollen. This is more
common in sensitive areas of the body. The redness and swelling should
subside within 2 to 7 days and should be treated with frequent applications
of ice. Gentle cleansing is OK, but avoid exposure to the sun.
Blisters or burns
Cool the aected area and apply anti-burn cream. Wait until the area has
healed completely before another treatment, and use a lower energy level.
If the skin does not return to normal within 3 days, consult your
physician.
8. Long-term hair removal the Skinera™ way
The eciency of hair removal varies from person to person according to body
area, hair colour, and how the Skinera™ IPL device is used. A typical full hair
growth cycle may take 18-24 months. During this time, multiple treatment
sessions are required to achieve permanent hair removal.
A typical Skinera™ IPL device hair removal plan during a full hair growth cycle
includes:
Treatments 1-4: Plan two weeks apart.
Treatments 5-7: Plan four weeks apart.
Treatments 8+: Treat as needed, until desired results are achieved.

8.2 Energy levels
The energy level determines the intensity of the light pulse delivered to your
skin. As the energy level increases, so do hair removal results, as well as the risk
of possible side eects and complications.
The device has 5 levels of energy from 1 (the lowest) to 5 (the highest),
represented by 5 energy level indicator lights (#2 in the diagram).
Skinera JEWEL UM 2298A inside ED89-03.indd 10 1/9/2017 17:07:08

11
ENEN
When the device is turned on, the energy level is set to level 1 automatically.
Only one energy level indicator light will be on.
To change the energy level, press the control button (#3 in the diagram)
repeatedly to increase the energy level from 1 to 5. Once at level 5, press the
control button again to reduce the energy level from 5 back to 1.
M
To determine the right energy level for your treatment area, refer
to section "9.1 Before your rst treatment".
8.3 Pulsing and gliding
Pulsing is the best technique for working at higher energy levels.
Work in rows (either across or down as shown in the image). Start at one end
of each row and progress to the other end. Press the treatment surface against
your skin. The treatment surface creates temporary pressure marks on the
treated area so you can see areas you have treated. After each pulse, move the
treatment surface to the next area. Keep doing this pulsing action for the area
you are treating. Avoid gaps or overlaps between areas.
EDo not treat the same area of skin more than once per hair removal
session.
Gliding is the best technique for working at lower energy levels.
Press the device rmly against your skin and slowly glide over your skin (either
across or down as shown in the image). Make sure that the skin is always
touching the device. At lower energy levels, the device takes only 1-1.5 seconds
to recharge between pulses. This generates a nonstop sequence of ashes.
Glide at a speed so that you avoid gaps or overlaps.
EStop use immediately if your skin blisters or burns.

8.4 The skin colour sensor
Light-based hair removal on darker skin tones may result in adverse eects
suchas burns,blisters,andskincolour changes(hyper-or hypo-pigmentation).
Your Skinera™ IPL device has a skin colour sensor that detects the colour of
your skin automatically (#6 in the diagram). If your skin tone is too dark for
safe use, the device will not operate.
8.5 What to expect when treating with Skinera™
For many people, using the Skinera™ IPL device may be their rst experience
witha light-based device.During a treatmentsession it isnormal toexperience
or feel:
Noise: The cooling fan makes noise similar to a hair dryer. This
is normal.
A popping sound: With each ash of IPL light.
A sensation of warmth and tingling: During each light pulse.
Some redness: It is not uncommon to see some very mild,
pink-like skin colouration during or just after a treatment. This is
usually most noticeable around the hairs themselves.
EStop use immediately if you see your skin is very red.
9. Get started
To use your Skinera™ IPL device, follow these steps:
1. Remove the device and other components from box.
2. Plug the adapter cord into the device socket (#1 in the diagram) and
plug the adapter into an electrical outlet. All energy level indicator
lights will turn on, and then go o.

9.1 Before your rst treatment
ERemove all jewellery before each treatment.
You must decide which energy level is right for your skin and the area you want
to treat. The device has 5 levels of energy from 1 (the lowest) to 5 (the highest).
To choose the right energy level, test each treatment area separately (refer to
the skin colour chart at the front of this manual).
1. Press the control button to turn on the device. The level 1 energy level
indicator light will go on.
2. Place the treatment surface (#5 in the diagram) on your skin to deliver
one pulse. If you do not experience abnormal discomfort press the
control button again. This will increase the energy level. Deliver one
pulse on a dierent spot at energy level 2.
3. Continue testing at increased energy levels. Use the energy levels
indicated on the skin colour chart. If you do not experience any adverse
eects within one hour, you can start your full treatment at that energy
level.
EUse a lower energy level if you experience any discomfort.
Repeat this test for each part of the body you wish to treat.
You are now ready to use your Skinera™ IPL device.
1. Before treating an area, the skin should be shaved, clean, dry and free
of any powders, antiperspirants or deodorants. Do not wax, pluck or
tweeze the hair out.
2. Press the control button. The device will turn on, the level 1 energy
indicator light will be on, and a fan sound will start.
3. Approximately 1 second after pressing the controlbutton, the readylight
will turn on (#4 in the diagram). The device is then ready to use at the
lowest energy level.
4. Set the energy level. Press the control button repeatedly to increase
the energy level until you have the level you want. The energy level
indicator lights indicate the energy level setting (refer to section "8.2
Energy levels").

6. Apply the treatment surface to the skin (#5 in the diagram). Make sure
that the skin is spread evenly and smoothly. When the treatment
surface is in full contact with the skin, the ready light will start blinking
slowly.
7. The device will rst determine the colour of your skin automatically
and it will ash a pulse of light onto your skin. You will feel a mild
sensation of warmth and tingling, and you may hear a popping sound.
MThe device will not operate if your skin tone is too dark for safe
use.
MIf you are pulsing, remove the device from your skin. The
device will immediately recharge for the next pulse. After a few
seconds (depending on the energy level) the ready light will
turn on again, and will pulse when pressed against the skin.
8. If youare pulsing, repeat the process. If you are gliding, simply continue.
9. Continue to pulse or glide until you have treated the area fully.
EStop use immediately, if your skin blisters or burns.
10. After treatment
When you have nished your treatment session:
1. Turn the device o by giving the control button an extended press.
